I've visited Frenchy's Hideout, and it's true, he does hide out here, but you really need to look. On my first visit, I came during happy hour, and thoroughly enjoyed the Filet Mignon Burger, and the second time was during brunch where I dove into a French classic, the Croque Madame. Let's just say, both experiences resulted in a very positive experience. The burger was very made and tempted at a beautiful pink medium. The burger came with bacon, greens, onions, with cheese that baked on the burger in a high heat oven. It's those little things that make a burger special. The flavor of the beef up front and personal, which is what you want in a great burger. The bacon was of the thick variety and good quality, as a result it offered, not only great flavor, but a great chew. It was a great burger and quite a mouthful, I may add. The burger came with a heaping pile of well fried crispy and well seasoned fries. The Croque Madame was one of the best I have had in San Diego. It does not come with eggs, so you have to request it for an additional $2.50 fee. Like the filet mignon burger, this too looked great when it arrived. I asked for the eggs to tempted at over medium and the kitchen did not disappoint. The eggs were perfect and offered that nice slow run of the yolk. The meal came with a side of delicious house potatoes. The Croque Madame came filled with a thick black forest ham between the slices of toasted sourdough bread. The béchamel sauce was most excellent and well executed. It was silky smooth with great flavor. It was a great breakfast, and those house potatoes offered a great crispiness and tender center. Well done! Both times, the service was not just super chill, but friendly and helpful. They offer inside seating and a small patio right out in front.

Pretty conflicted about this place- Came for happy hour because the menu was very attractive - good prices for great options! Made reservations but we were the only ones there- felt a little too intimate. The bartender kept overhearing and inputting in our conversation it was interesting - but the drinks were delicious!! The mussels were simple, good. The bread was very stale and tasted very frozen in my opinion. The truffle fries had real truffle which is nice, and I love the caviar bump options! That was fun. The charcuterie was a miss for us, as you can see the strawberry was the biggest thing on it. The staff and manager seemed very passionate about it all and described to us each item, but the taste was not there for us unfortunately. I am hoping that since we came during happy hour / a weird transition time of the day, it was an off experience in terms of what food they had prepared because it did not taste fresh at all and we felt very exposed in this little place when trying to just hang out and catch up

Such a cozy spot with some delicious French food!! Owner is very kind and extremely knowledgeable about every single item on the menu including the wine list. Definitely don't miss this spot in Hillcrest!

Hidden gem with great food -- but mixed first impression My son wanted to try escargot, so we decided to check out Frenchi Hideout in Hillcrest. It truly is a little hidden gem tucked away in the neighborhood. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty -- we only saw one other customer near the check-in booth. The owner's wife asked if we had reservations and seemed hesitant about seating us. It felt a bit awkward, especially since the restaurant was clearly not busy. I honestly felt pre-judged walking in. Thankfully, her husband stepped in right away and warmly told us to go ahead and choose a seat, which immediately made things more comfortable. Now -- the food absolutely made up for that first impression. The escargot was delicious -- soaked in rich garlic butter and perfectly cooked. We ordered the steak frites -- the steak came out slightly cold, but the fries were crispy and tasty. The beef bourguignon was hands-down the star of the meal -- incredibly tender meat and deep, flavorful sauce. I would absolutely return just for that dish alone. We also tried the duck confit, which was well-prepared. We ordered a bump of caviar for about $25, and I'll be honest -- it was literally a tiny bump. Tasty, yes, but very small for the price. For dessert, the crème brûlée had a nice texture, though it wasn't quite as sweet as I prefer -- still enjoyable. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate vibe that adds to the charm. Overall, great food and a charming setting, with just a slightly awkward first impression. I'd return -- especially for the beef bourguignon.

We visited this cozy French restaurant in Hillcrest on Saturday evening right after the New Year, and it was a wonderful experience. Some Christmas decorations were still up. It's family-owned, and you'll often see the husband and wife greeting guests, serving tables, and checking in. Even though they've been open less than a year, the restaurant already has a great buzz. The space is small and fills up fast, so reservations are highly recommended. We ordered the Tuna Crudo, Roasted Beet Salad, Wild King Atlantic Salmon, Duck Confit, and Red Wine Poached Pear. Everything was excellent, but the Duck Confit completely stood out--by far the best duck dish I've ever had, incredibly tender with a unique flavor. I'll definitely be back just for that. The bread shown in photos must be ordered separately for an extra charge. I want to come to try other dishes as well.

Frenchie's is such a cute and quaint little spot in Hillcrest. It's a smaller restaurant with fewer tables, which makes the experience feel really personal and intimate. The atmosphere is super charming, and the service was impressively fast. The food was phenomenal--the duck was an absolute standout, perfectly cooked and fall-off-the-bone tender. The steak was also incredibly tender, and the escargot was amazing. Even the pizza salad was delicious. I had a great glass (actually, a phenomenal bottle) of French red wine from a château that paired beautifully with everything. Overall, this place is a gem. I'd come back a hundred times over.

One weekday in February, I was on a solo mission for this specific Happy Hour burger after seeing it on social media. Happy to report that I think I found my favorite burger of all time...at a French restaurant. Not only was this ginormous burger and portion of fries only $22, but it came with a delicious garlic ranch sauce that just set this meal over. The fries reminded me of McDonalds fries (meaning they were perfect). They were crispy, warm, and perfectly salty. The burger...HUGE. The bread was crispy on the inside but soft on the outside. The meat was juicy and flavorful, cheese melted, and the onion rings were crunchy. The combination of flavors just amazing. The place is pretty small in size. They have a cute small patio area up front that I could envision being a nice spot to be at night. The interior is cute. I enjoyed my view of the Eiffel Tower while I was eating. Took me back to my Paris trip from last summer hahaha. The owner was so nice and was a joyful guy. He gave me a Free Appetizer card for the next time I go. Despite not trying any authentic French food from Frenchy's, I will continue raving about this place for this specific burger.

Went back for Sunday brunch. Everything we ordered was amazing. We shared the French onion soup to start. Honestly the best I've ever had. The cheese on top of the baguette is out of this world. The broth perfect. We had the Cali Benedict and the Beef Bourguignon Hash. I don't have enough vocabulary to explain how great it was. Mike the owner came to our table and made our morning special. He asked questions on what we liked and recommended what he felt would be perfect for us. Every recommendation was spot on. We sat outside on the patio and were able to watch people pass by as we ate our meal. It was a little chilly, but Mike came over and turned on the heater for my wife. Paola his wife came to see if we were enjoying ourselves and recommended the crème brûlée. My wife and I were both full, but figured a bite wouldn't hurt. As he fired the torch on top of the crème brûlée I knew it was going to be something special. With two spoons we were fighting for the last bite of the sugary topped perfection. To see this place was great as an understatement. Everything here was amazing the staff attentive, the owners caring and the food beyond perfect. If you're reading this far into this review, do yourself a favor and just go. There are many places in San Diego to eat... this place has a warmth of friendship and a food experience beyond compare. Perfect date spot or business meeting place . My wife and I got home and are already planning on bringing friends to experience everything about Frenchy's hideout.

~Food/Drinks~ I ordered the 3 Course Prix-Fixe Menu with the wine pairing and it was more than enough food and drinks. Some of us got a little tipsy just from the wines. I think this is a very good deal, especially if you want to try everything. And the portions don't look like they're smaller just because it's part of a set menu. First Course: I chose the Moules Marinières which were mussels in a white wine sauce. Super zesty and refreshing but I wish the flavors stuck more to the mussels. I liked that the bread just soaked everything up though. Also, they give free, fresh baguettes and it comes with garlic butter that's made in-house. So good! I also got to try the Soupe a l'onion Gratinée (French Onion Soup) and it was pretty good. Slightly sweet, very good with the melted cheese. Second Course: I chose the Beef Bourguignon and it was really good. The meat was tender but the sauce was a bit salty...super flavorful though. I also got to try the Steak Frites, which is a little extra if you're choosing it for the Prix-Fixe menu. Steak was super tender and had truffle shavings! Dessert: And finally, for dessert, I chose the Flambée Crème brulée -tableside. I was not expecting this large of a portion and it's torched at your table. That caramelized top was so fresh so every single bite had a nice crunch. ~Service~ Great service and very friendly staff. We briefly met either the owner or manager but he came out and asked us how our meal was and chatted for a bit. Also, since we did the wine pairing with our meal, we had a great server who really knew the wines and explained the way it pairs with each course. ~Atmosphere~ Very warm atmosphere, like the restaurant is small and cozy. At least when we dined in, it mostly seemed like all the others were regulars/locals. ~Logistics~ We made a reservation just to be safe but the place never completely filled up during dinner. I want to gatekeep this so bad so there's never a wait but I also want them to do well! The restaurant is located in Hillcrest so there aren't any big lots or easy parking. We had to circle around and find street parking a couple of blocks away. ~Conclusion~ I feel like it's rare to find a really good French restaurant in San Diego but I'm glad we have Frenchy's. The food is delicious, the staff were friendly, and they have happy hour too! Tues-Thurs from 2-6PM and Fri-Sun from 3-6PM. Need to come back and try their happy hour menu!

I came here with my wife for dinner and we loved everything. Beautiful restaurant with food and amazing service. Owner Michael Simpson came to our table and brought us wine pairings with the price fixed menu and talked to us about his life. He made wine recommendations which made every course that much better. Every course was excellent and the service was excellent. We will be back again and again and again.

    Beef Bourguignon, delicious.

Absolutely delicious food. The beef and the duck were incredible. The beat and goat cheese salad, WOW. Excellent service too. We love the owners! It's a whole experience! We will be back again. Thank you.

Thon Cru "fresh tuna crudo" DELICIOUS!
    Ken A.

Decided to try out Frenchy's Hideout, a newly opened intimate French restaurant, and very glad I did. The space is cozy without feeling cramped, and the vibe was relaxed, with live music that added to the atmosphere. The service was on point, and Michael, the owner, came out to personally check in on us, which was a great touch. You can tell there's care behind both the food and the hospitality. Now let's talk food...make sure to ask for BAGUETTE AND BUTTER! Baguette is baked in house and that butter is garlicky and salty. Great start to get your mouth watering. You'll taste it after your meal too :) Thon Cru (fresh tuna crudo) - Easily one of the best things I've had in a while. Super fresh, light, and full of flavor. I'd go back for this dish alone. Bouillabaisse - The saffron broth was delicate but rich, and the shellfish tasted fresh and well-prepared. Note to self for next time: bring bread. You're gonna want to sop up every drop of that broth. Lamb Shank - No knife needed. It was fall-apart tender and deeply flavorful. Shrimp and pesto risotto was tasty. Shrimp perfectly cooked on a bed of fresh pesto risotto. For dessert, we tried both the creme brulee, which was brulee'd tableside (a nice touch), and the wine-poached pears. Neither was overly sweet, which I appreciated--they both wrapped up the meal in a balanced, satisfying way. Will I be back? Definitely. Frenchy's is the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem now--but maybe not for long. Go check it out... just don't tell everyone. Welp! Onto the next!

This place exceeded every one of them. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Wolf in the Woods feels like a hidden European café you'd stumble upon while traveling. Sitting outside beneath the umbrellas with a cocktail, watching the neighborhood stroll by. It felt like a little corner cafe in Paris. Then the food arrived. Every plate was beautifully presented, but the real magic was in the creativity of the flavors. The combinations were unexpected, yet every one worked. Every dish had me wondering how on earth someone came up with these pairings in the first place. The Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup deserves a standing ovation. We literally stopped talking after the first spoonful. Rich, savory, slightly sweet, comforting and completely unexpected all at the same time. Both of our eyes rolled back in our heads. The Beef Tataki completely surprised me. The outside had a delicate seared crust, the inside cut like butter, and the citrus pairing made me rethink what flavors belong together. And the mushroom and polenta dish? The mushrooms had an incredible texture--like savory little pieces of mushroom jerky. I would have happily bought a pound of them just to snack on. Every dish felt like it was taking me somewhere I'd never been before, yet somehow felt familiar at the same time. Wolf in the Woods creates an unforgettable experience.

Definitely on the pricier end for certain dishes but many of them are well worth it! - sourdough bread: good but also why are we spending $16 here. can't say it's worth - ahi tartare: no notes, everything hit, would come back for this alone - steamed clam and mussels: these were some meaty af mussels. delicious! the clams were tiny & pathetic tho and can't say I loved having the chorizo in there - charred broccolini: honestly don't remember this well but i had no complaints - grilled oysters: another fav of mine!!! a must get - hearth roasted carrots: the yogurt & pesto were on the side (due to dairy restrictions) but the pesto was SO. GOOD. paired beautifully with the carrots!!!!! I'm dying to know how to make this at home myself - branzino: good but would skip. I do typically like fish entrees but this wasn't overly impressive. could've used more sauce - NY strip: our favorite entree!!!! paired SO with the bone marrow - duck: super tender and fell right off the bone!!! our second fav entree - almond joy: incredible dessert, every bite I felt like I was getting a little something new. vanilla ice cream in the middle. LOVEEED this as our ending to dinner

Lots of hype about Fort Oak. Seemed to be busy when we were in the area. Menu is pinch…read moreoff-putting. Wasn't tooooo much looking forward to it, but it fit all the Birthday Dinner check marks and you can't down talk a place if you haven't been there. First. Listen. Everyone's using open table. But Fort Oak, tell Open Table to chill. I used open table to reserve about 4 days in advance, but still got a TON of emails, and a ton of notifications. Including one that, if I didn't respond to it, would cancel my reservation. Then 3 follow ups asking me to review Fort Oak. Haysuse on a pogo stick, that was almost a detractor from the actual dinner. Is this dinner or a past due bill sent to collection agency? I digress. First, our waiter Johny E, phenomenal. Dude knows wine in ways that are supernatural. Spot on recommendations. Second. Put on your Pulp Fiction "5 dollar shake" face about a 50 dollar pork chop. A FIFTY DOLLAR PORK CHOP. Waiter, who had already proven he know WTF was what, simply said "we're known for it, you will probably enjoy, people rave about it". So, I mean, when in Rome. Johny wasn't lying. It's a pretty @#$#ing good pork chop. Color me amazed. You can be skeptical. You might say I was just trying to justify having spent 50 on a pork chop. Try it. Stunning. I don't know if it's the best I ever had, but I can't remember a better one. Over all, they nail the experience, the food, and wrap it up in a bow. It is always busy, so a reservation is best (I'd call vice using that @#$# open table app, I swear). Shout out about Johny - in fact, ask for him to be your waiter, he a star.
