Fresh Direct was a miracle when they first introduced their service, but they slowly but steadily gone downhill. Many of the basics I need are unexplainably out of stock and they do not post when they'll be available. If I can't get everything I need, then I have to go to the market anyway, so no point in ordering. The bigger problem has been with deliveries. Tonight's order had clearly been left out in the rain, and not for just a little while. Boxes and cartons came soaked literally to the point of falling apart in my hands, and this has happened more than once. (Why they could not have been covered by a tarp if left out, I don't know) I've had deliveries of fruit crushed or berries scattered all over the inside of the bags. Fresh Direct, I'm not looking for refunds! Just please get it together. read more

So after looking at some of the reviews listed, I was Skeptical to order. First time doing this with the Covid and with the crowds in the supermarkets I gave it a shot. I ordered once and it came in 2 bags nothing was squashed every thing was fresh and looked beautiful. The lettuce was not brown not event one mark on it the eggplant looked like a picture. So I gave it a 2nd try and again everything was wonderfully packed left outside my door beautiful veggies and especially the kiwi picture perfect. So here I go again 3rd time. I have to say I'm hooked. Yes a little pricey but worth it. I guess with all the turnover they have with deliveries the food is fresher. FreshDirect is one of my favorite meal delivery services. They service the NYC area, but they just opened service to Philedelphia. If you live in any of these areas, I highly recommend you check them out. The first thing I like about them is that their prepared meals are all based on recipes of established area chefs, such as Michael Stark, Floyd Cardoz, Terrance Brennan, and Tina Bourteau. The FreshDirect kitchen then produces these meals for delivery to your home. The ones I have had were all well above average and a good value compared to cooking at home or eating out. Here are some of the meals I have tried: Beef Bourguignon I wasn't expecting this to be as good as what we serve in France. This meal is properly made. The Beef Bourguignon, which was braised in red wine and tossed over egg noodles with thick bacon bits, pearl onions, and wedges of carrots. I was wrong; this meal was perfect. Braising meat in this manner is a lost culinary skill in this country. It takes a while to cook this meat at home, then you refrigerate for a day, peel away the grizzle and take the meat off the bone, then you make the sauce with the vegetables. Do it right and you will be rewarded. FreshDirect took no short cuts here, and the meal is well worth $9.99. In fact, I think it could be a lot more. Have a bite and you'll agree. Turkey Bolognese Lasagna Lasagna is a passion of mine, so I was trying to save Turkey Bolognese Lasagna until last, but I couldn't resist. In my opinion, this is the second best lasagna you can buy from a prepared meal delivery service. The sauce is awesome, as is the lasagna, because it's all made with fresh ingredients. The cheese on top of it is fresh mozzarella, a detail not practiced by other prepared meal delivery companies. It is small, but all meal delivery lasagnas are, but the size is made up for with great flavors. I would certainly buy this again for $8.99. Chicken Enchiladas The Chicken Enchiladas were outstanding. The shredded chicken is perfectly seasoned and plentiful. The spices and sauce are all excellent too. The spice is not too hot, and can be enjoyed by anyone in the family. I would have liked to see a side vegetable to make it a complete meal, but I highly recommend this dish at $8.99. Shepherd's Pie I love your American Cottage Pie, but in this county, you call it Shepherd's Pie. A Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb; a Cottage Pie is made with beef. The one I tried from FreshDirect was one of the best I had from a meal delivery service, making it a good value at $7.29 for a full pound of pure deliciousness. Porcini Mushroom Risotto The Porcini Mushroom Risotto came with Porcini Mushrooms, Asparagus, Peas, and Parmesan Cheese. Risotto is a very difficult prepared meal to have come out of a microwave correctly but they did a very good job with this. It is not like a fresh risotto you would have in a restaurant. The mushrooms are few, but the broth is excellent, as is the texture. It just lacks some of the creaminess, but still is a good value at $7.99. read more

I have not had issues with the quality of the food but the amount of throwaway plastic is beyond acceptable. Each glass bottle is wrapped individually in a plastic bag. Plastic containers are grouped in plastic bags. The fruit is packaged in plastic clamshell containers and even the delivery bags are neither reusable nor recyclable. The bags are too large for normal daily use and the company will take them back and throw them away because they do not have a way to reuse them that meets sanitary codes for the city. I cannot, in the age of plastic overload, continue to use a service that is unable to deal with plastic reduction. read more

Fresh direct is hit or miss. If you plan on what day and time frame, and they have the items you want in stock, it's a great service. Food is usually fresh and the prices are slightly above a supermarkets. The misses are the fuel delivery surcharge - which they were charging for eons. Drivers who forget invoices and to apply coupons you give them. Give it a try. I now divide food delivery between them, PraPod and instacart - just check to see which items are cheaper. A lot of differences exist. PS always tip drivers in cash - never add to the bill. I don't trust the corporate structure actually getting that tip to the drivers read more

Terrible customer service; terrible at actually delivering what you order. I've used FreshDirect for a couple of months and have only had one order - my first - that wasn't missing items or didn't contain spoiled or squished (they pack in large totes, so soft produce is rolling around with large cans and jars) items. I've had terrible experiences with their delivery windows -- first it was getting a notification 6 minutes before the close of my delivery window (on a Friday evening) that my order would be at least 30 minutes late. Then, on my next order, it was receiving an automated call asking to delivery earlier than the time slot I chose. I replied no, but the driver then repeatedly called me, telling me he was going to leave my items outside (I have a locked gate to the sidewalk that I can't unlock unless I'm home). I reached out to customer service - phone and email - but no reply. I followed up, waiting on the phone line until I got to speak with a manager and she escalated my concerns to Mark, the director of operations. Mark actually phoned me and made a HUGE deal on the phone of making sure I had his direct phone number. He then talked me through the 19 year history of FreshDirect, the week-long driver training program, the six competitors that maybe never miss an item in an order but are their items fresh..., etc. I can phone anytime!, he said. He takes calls every day of the year!, he said. His wife of 31 years and his granddaughter know how passionate he is about service!, he said. I suggested to him that maybe FreshDirect isn't the right service for me as I need to be home to accept delivery - nope!, said Mark, you're exactly the customer we want! I was given $200 in credits and Mark's assurance that he would call the head of the warehouse to make sure my next order was personally overseen by her. Next order delivery (the day after speaking with Mark): autocall asking to deliver early, disregard for me saying 'no' and driver repeatedly calling me, same driver as before, AND items missing from my order (of course they charge me for the items missing - is it that hard to notice TWO watermelons are missing from an order??). Mark had told me, three times on the phone, that I wouldn't have the same driver that threatened to leave my groceries (and also wouldn't carry them to the door, he left them at my feet on the sidewalk), yet there he was... Called the number Mark made sure I had - a cell phone with a full mailbox. I called customer service - disconnected. I emailed, no reply. I followed up 48 hours later and, while I was able to leave a message on Mark's cell phone, no reply from a human. About four days letter I get an email from generic customer service saying that Mark tried to call me on the 4th of July... Nope. No missed calls, no blocked calls, no voicemail. So. They don't care and there are too many other grocery delivery services that are happy to have my business. Two things to add that may be helpful to those considering FreshDirect, or who are putting up with late/missing deliveries: Mark (I verified his employment, through a search, at FreshDirect and his title, of course) told me that since FreshDirect really thinks of drivers and customers as "family", they make sure that no driver is overburdened on their route. Not only are routes/deliveries planned to make sure the driver won't be "stressed" but, if there are emergencies or things like roadwork, street closures, etc., there are backup trucks just waiting to meet up with the original driver and take over some of the deliveries. Customer service also shared with me that FreshDirect is having trouble with their floral vendor, which is why the flowers are always on sale but are half-dead when you get your order. read more

I have shopped from Fresh Direct for a few years, I only had one item missing (chicken breast) but my last delivery I had two items (strawberries and peaches) missing and I think the driver stole my fruits. When I answered my door the driver refused to look me in the eye and hung his head walking into my apartment and exiting my apartment. They delivered two bags, one with about five items and one with a half a pound of sliced turkey. Who places a 1/2 of meat in one huge bag? I emailed their customer service and they credited me for a future purchase. It is really inconvenient when you did not receive the items you purchased. One item I ordered was Brussel Sprouts. The end of the Brussel Sprouts was brown and dirty which means they were not fresh. Fresh Direct needs to change their name to something else like "Thieves & Con men." read more

My FreshDirect order was scheduled for between 6-8 am today, and it never came. I got a phone call from Customer Service asking me if they could leave it outside my house and I said absolutely not, because there were perishable items and I wouldn't be home until later in the afternoon. They offered to bring it between 3-4:30. My "groceries" (bag of warm garbage) arrived after 5:15, seafood leaking all over the other products and frozen food thawed and melted. The only thing missing was a swarm of flies. I have now requested they come remove this compost heap from my front door before the animals get it. Not holding my breath! read more

I made an order for $331.32 I got confirmation that it will be delivered in 2 days. . After a few hours of not receiving my order I wasn't able to log in to my account so I called in and they tell me that my account was deactivated because of a payment issue and they need the bank to call them. I did not get any email or any kind of notification that this is happening. And obviously after getting them on the phone with the bank the bank said they never had an issue with my payment and there is no reason my account should raise any flags or be deactivated as I have a very healthy account. How dare does a company close your account with out notifying you and they did not release my charge yet. If you like being disappointed give them a try otherwise stay away!! read more

I have become a major fan of "Fresh Direct" for supplying a fabulous selection of fruits,vegetables, meats, and savory pre/made healthy meals and desserts! We just moved to New Jersey and were hard hit by four consecutive nor Easter's.. Fresh Direct came to our rescue Amidst the snow,ice, and downed power lines our order arrived early as requested. The quality of the meat, produce, water and desserts was superb. Beautifully packed and competitively priced. Their customer service is fantastic and their ability to make good on any problems is beyond compare, Highly recommended and a wonderful hiatus from having to drive in lousy weather and pack and unpack is a blessing! Beware: they gave me a coupon and nowhere in the fine print did it say that I was signing up for a recurring service. Luckily I noticed an unauthorized charge on my account, but it is truly fraudulent to never notify someone they are signing up for a recurring service unless they click through to a separate page. But I stopped for a moment, and decided that with what they are dealing with every day, and the countless (can you say countless our days when everything is written somewhere??) deliveries, one bad experience should not take them down to the area of 1-2 stars. 1. Twice I had missing beer from the packs I ordered. Oh well... 2. They give your the best products. So I can trust them. 3. If you want to move delivery time be prepared for a no (although asking again and again can make a change. 4. If you order bananas, you will get some green and some yellow. Perfect! Prices: it is not cheap. At the same time, they will deliver quality fruits, vegetables, and more. They are not perfect. Who can be perfect when running such operation. I had mixed reviews from others but no one had a bad experience on their first order. This is my first time ordering and still they manage to screw it up. They left out 1 item. Now I have more work and need to follow up and reserve a time for delivery again. Also, one of the products was misleading. My friend referred me and they didn't give her referral credit, free item or something. Delivery range was 12-2p and the friendly delivery guy came around 1:30p. Each item was covered with a clear plastic bag and there's a separate area for eggs. Shipping was $6. Customer service was responsive. Nothing was broken or went bad. I am a fairly new customer and I've only used it twice. The first time they forgot one item. The second time the driver informed us that a bag was incorrectly scanned into the truck. When I called customer service they were completely unhelpful in getting our items delivered the same day. We had food in that bag that we needed to feed a young child. We ended up having to go to the grocery store anyway to pick up all the missing items since we were running low. Fresh direct is such a disappointment and I would never use it again. read more

Always have had good service, on time, received all I ordered and all excellent quality. While I ordered some of their prepared food and found it adequate, I was very pleasantly surprised for thanksgiving. They offered a full thanksgiving meal for 2 to 4, with turkey breast, stuffing, and four sides. It included gravy and cranberry sauce. So this year being so strange I decided not to cook ,so I ordered it . I felt a little anxious but, it came as scheduled, and the surprise was it was superb. Not only was every dish tasty and well prepared but it came with the most amazing step by step instructions. Even if you had never boiled an egg, you could not go wrong. I used to be a big fan of fresh direct. been ordering from them for the last 10 years or so. But lately the quality of their products, and service got really bad. Deliveries are late (so what's the purpose of giving a time frame), products not fresh or destroyed. On my last order I was supposed to have salmon, and received something that I cannot describe (was it a bird, a fish? no idea) . This was the last drop as it was 3rd order that was a mess. I called , complained yet again. and a manager was supposed to call me. 2 weeks later still no call. I will never order from them again. After complaining online a bit, my last grievance was solved. Fresh Direct has always had excellent customer service. It is very easy to contact them via a link on their site. A response is usually within a day. Every time I complained, I was VERY satisfied with their responses. Usually, it is something minor, like a broken egg. And every time, they replace the item the next day or give me a credit for twice the value. THUMBS UP!!! So, it was a little surprising that they didn't honor my complaint when I first made it about the misleading coupon. None the less, after a little prodding, they made good, and gave me a $25 coupon code. Once, I had to make a more serious complaint about a delivery person that was CLEARLY not dog friendly. Seems like that should be a job requirement. Since then, most of the delivery folks have been super friendly, and Fresh Direct wrote back a nice letter to me. My last order with FreshDirect was short a few items. No big deal. Doesn't happen all that often. So I didn't complain or anything. Went to Westside Market yesterday to fill in the gaps. Fresh Direct just sent me an email to apologize for the missing items, (even though I didn't contact them) and they gave me a $20 coupon. How cool is that? What a great company! read more

Our first and last time trying to order from FreshDirect. When our groceries were not delivered in the given time frame we tried logging into our account only to discover our account was locked. We called customer service and found out there was an issue with the credit card we used, which we've never had a problem with. They said we would need to call our bank and merge the call with them. I don't understand why they did not notify us that our groceries were not going to be delivered and that there was a payment issue. I also don't understand why we were not notified immediately of a payment issue after entering our credit card information. Customer service did not proactively offer any compensation. read more

Such good food! Really. The quality is way above the usual supermarket and the prices are about the same. The eggs and milk are Delish. Sometimes I get an item I wouldn't have picked up myself - like a too soft avocado. But hey, I didn't have to do shit too get it. Recommend their grass fed steaks, great selection of cheeses, juices and coffees. They carry it all, including la colombe and a really nice Kona blend. I used to like them but the quality has been disappointing. I got the marinated meat and that was disappointing. Seafood is decent. The fruits are frozen and when they thaw the bruising and spoiled comes within a day. The only thing I rely on is the veggies and frozen stuff. NEVER again. I've been using Fresh Direct, sporadically, for about 3+ years. Generally, they've been pretty good although they can't measure out fish or meat correctly and always deliver less than you've ordered (e.g. .4 pounds instead of .5 pounds. If it's shrimp, this makes a big difference. Or .75 pounds if you order 1 pound of lamb riblets. Again, a noticeable difference). And occasionally, melted ice cream... But then this weekend... I ordered a delivery for Sunday and the only time slot left was 10-11:30pm. Kind of late, but okay, I really wanted food for the week, so I took it. Then this happened: 9:45 - FD delivered my 3 frozen items and says "I think your box is lost." I said, "Isn't it just on the late truck?" He said, "Oh, yeah, if that's what you ordered." 10:22 - FD calls me to say "Your box containing [list of items] is lost." I said, "Isn't it just on the late truck and if so, do you know the approximate time?" She says, "Oh, you're right, it's on the late truck, should be there by 11." 11:28 - I call FD to ask where my order is and am told "Your ETA was 3 minutes ago so it should be there ANY MINUTE." 11:45 - I call FD again and am put on hold for close to 5 minutes. Then I am told "Your order has no ETA and their system will go down in 5 minutes." I asked if they could possibly deliver it between 7-8 Monday morning and was told "The earliest possible is TUESDAY." Now, while this woman on the phone was very nice and it was clearly not her fault (which I said to her),I still had no delivery and it's now about midnight on a Sunday night and, oh yeah, I have work the next day. I suppose I could have asked to speak to a Supervisor, but at this point, I just wanted to go to bed. Everyone on the phone was very nice but ultimately uniformed, inaccurate and worst of all, completely ineffective at fixing this. The following day, I wrote to FD and was eventually issued a $50 credit (on a $72 order). After more email, I got another $20, and finally, another $1.10. Between the experience of Sunday night, plus not having the food, PLUS it taking at least four emails to get a proper credit, I don't think I will ever use FD again. read more

Horrible beyond belief! I can't comment on the food because I never was able to place an order despite having spent hours on the phone with their and my bank's customer service departments. The FD site kept rejecting my bank code. After putting me on long holds they would come back to me and tell me to "call my bank" (check, no problem with the card and worked on other sites) and when that failed told me I would be getting a call back from a FD supervisor "within 48 hours." Multiple promises and days later, still no call from a FD supervisor. read more

I was delighted with my Fresh Direct experience. I placed a large order several days ago. They had all the things I had hoped to find. I was able to pick a delivery time a few days away. The order arrived even a little early on the appointed day. The courteous delivery person was ready to help get things into the house but was thoughtful about the distance thing. Everything I had ordered was there, carefully wrapped. I was happy to leave FD a five-star rating when they asked for feedback. I appreciated the breadth of their offerings, the ease of using their website, and the frequent update emailings. It gives me comfort in this quarantine time to be able to order online the bulky heavy things I would rather not ask my kind neighbors to get for us. read more

I've been using Fresh Direct for a long time. Everything started out great and initially I was very happy with the quality of food and convenience of grocery delivery. Over the last several months things have gone down hill. The deliveries are always late. I've had instances where I received an automated call AFTER the delivery window has passed to inform me the order is delayed. Every time I have called customer service regarding a late order, they always "refund" the delivery charge. The catch is that they credit it for your next order so you will have to order again to see that "refund". I've called when the order is late only to be given the run around. They say they will contact the driver. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can't. I've had them say a manager will call me back. It has never happened. They tell you it will be there in ___ minutes. So I would wait and when the timeframe inevitably passes, I'd call back and be told oh now it's ___ minutes away. You are basically held hostage. I've told them a couple of times to try again tomorrow because I got sick of waiting and had to go to bed. The last straw was my delivery last week. Aside from being late, I ordered roast beef which I have ordered before. It was gray in color and extremely fatty. It was not edible. I didn't bother calling over this because I am not interested in a "refund". But I hope someone from Fresh Direct sees this review and knows that they lost a loyal weekly customer. Fresh direct seems great. The promise of picking out your food and having everything you would like, delivered in a between 4-6 is heaven. In reality, not so great. Each time I order from Fresh Direct, there are problems, along with the big price tag. One time, when I opened the cartons, they smelled like someone had smoked a pack of cigarettes. Other times, I ordered ingredients to make a recipe, and they delivered half the items, even though they sent me a confirmation email that included all the items I had ordered. The other day I ordered sliders and buns for my son, for super bowl,(despite the fact that they sent me a confirmation email that showed all of my items except tomatoes on board) they sent me chicken (which no one here will eat), and buns, and did not send the sliders, or quiche I ordered. Both for this evening, Super Bowl Sunday. Ok, mistakes are made, but when I called to ask for the items to be delivered, they would not deliver the items until tomorrow evening. I said I would not be here tomorrow eve, but if someone would deliver them tomorrow AM, I could cook the sliders tomorrow night for dinner. In no way would they figure out how to accommodate my schedule to deliver these to me. Paul, kept me on hold for 17 minutes, while trying to figure out if they could get these from their other business. They could not. Fresh Direct is NOT accommodating, even for their own screw ups. Customer service is not their forte. So much easier and much less frustrating to go to TRADER JOES, Fairway or anywhere else, between the time on hold and the time to place my order, I could have done my shop, saved money, and have picked out everything myself. read more

Been a Chef's Table and (recently found out) VIP member for over 10 years. I'm done now. They've ruined more orders and failed to deliver during the 2 hour time slot one too many times. Is it convenient? yeah, you don't have to leave your home. Is it cheaper? no. it's about the same. Is it incredibly frustrating? yes. consistently. I don't reccommend them any more. MY ORDER WAS NOT DELIVERED! The status was 'EN-ROUTE' for the entire evening. It was supposed to be delivered between 7pm and 9pm. I called customer service 3 times. I was told the first two times I called that there was no status on the truck in the system. They said, twice, that they reached out the operations team and that someone would call me back shortly. NO ONE EVER CALLED. The third time I called customer service told me that the truck broke down. This was at 10:45pm, almost two hours after the end of the delivery window. I said I wanted to cancel the order. The order, apparently was not cancelled. This is completely abysmal customer service all around. I now have to call my credit card company to dispute this charge as I will not be charged for food that did not arrive. First off, if the truck did break down, how do you not know that until 1:45 after the delivery window ends? Also, how do they not have a contingency plan for broken down delivery trucks? Second, Fresh Direct customer service is pleasant, but completely ineffective. They offer nothing but apologies and empty promises. In fact, they didn't even cancel the order when I asked them to do so. If they were empowered to keep customers happy, this order should have been cancelled and replaced, gratis, through FoodKick after I called the first time. I shouldn't have to call three times, tweet @FreshDirect three times, and email them, only to be charged for food that never arrived.
