I give Freshdirect 5 stars because they deliver the best gourmet food I would not be able to get otherwise and if I have any issues, they always make it right within 1 day of my complaint. Best customer service ever. Here are some items I have bought from Freshdirect that I highly recommend: 1. branzino-- delivered fresh, cleaned, in filets and only $6.99 a pound! I made crispy skin branzino for dinner and it was a perfect 10! Just sprinkle salt and pepper, pan fry with olive oil, add butter and herbes de Provence, squeeze lemon on top. I made clam soup with garlic, onion, celery and carrots and of course the fresh clams from FD. If you let them breathe in your fridge, they stay fresh for a week. 6. Plums- always sweet and exotic varieties you can't find elsewhere 7. Sugar Kiss & Honey kiss melons from Savor farms, so awesome and never seen anywhere else 8. Oriental lilies- $12.50 a bunch if you buy two, so fragrant and wonderful 9. Dave's Killer Bread- the most amazing healthy bread with lots of chewy grains and seeds- just buy it. 10. Grapes from Grapery- the Flavor Promise red grapes and the most flavorful ever and the Cotton Candy and Moon Drop varieties are so unique! 11. Boars Head Cold cuts- yes, everyone sells this but they have a 3 item deal for $11, so it's convenient. Cons: 1. the prices are not that low and I wind up spending $300-500 a week if I don't control myself. 2. Why is the free gift promotion only on Mondays? The price at the end of your shopping will be not the same that they will charge you, they use beautiful word "estimate total". They charged me extra $20 for extra meat that they put themselves on my order. When you order exact amount, you planning what you will do with it, like I don't need that extra. When I'm going to store or butcher, they cut what I want. So my experience is bad with this company and I canceled all my orders and will never use them again. read more

I placed my first order with Fresh Direct. The initial trial charge went through on my credit card. The charge for the order is pending on my credit card, but here comes the surprise. My order was never delivered. When I tried to log on to the website- where I have a confirmed account, I could not log in -- I was getting a now email is associated error (though I partially show up). I called customer support-- apparently my order was canceled (though I recieved ZERO communication regarding this -- and again the charges are pending on my credit card. Apparently there is a fraud investigation but they cannot tell me anytihng (and yes the account confirmed with a phone number certainly exists as he can see is) but he cannot give me any details. And I was told to just wait and hope that they reached out. I certainly won't try this service again and will not recommend it . read more

Since I have zero time to cook or mess around in the kitchen,, Fresh Direct's prepared meals are a godsend. Everything I've ordered is fresh and delicious and EASY!! AVOID SHOPPING WITH FRESH DIRECT. I used their service for years but their operations are now a mess. There are other high quality options through InstaCart or Amazon. I placed a recent order with Fresh Direct - hoping that things had improved. My groceries never arrived - yet the app showed them as having been delivered (similar experience to other reviewers now that I have read the reviews). When I called they indicated that it had been a mistake on their part and offered to send the groceries the next morning. They never showed up. When I called again... they said they had no record of the 'reorder', apologized and committed to calling back. Never called. I just got my weekly / bi-weekly FreshDirect grocery delivery. Ordering from FreshDirect is without fail an ideal delivery experience. They deliver on time, bring my order up 4 flights to my apartment door (I give an extra cash tip because #grateful). Are masked, follow COVID-19 protocols. Everything I requested is in the order that was delivered - and if anything is missing, it's a quick painless credit on their app. The produce is incredibly fresh and delicious. The figs right now omg #obsessed - and other specialty fruit are worth every penny. It all TASTES GOOD. Sliced deli meats are packaged well and so fresh and good. Cubed cheese so yummy. Castlevetrano (sp?) green olives are out of this world. They have 4 options of Siggi's triple cream yogurt. #heckYEAH! I love the fact that if I have a delivery that's scheduled to come in a day or more, I can edit my order up until 8:00 pm the night before. It's great if you regret that treat and reconsider - and especially if you forget an item. Is it more expensive than a typical non-NYC grocery store? Yes. But the quality and peace of mind is 100% worth it. I have learned to order strategically. And remain grateful. I supplement with Stop & Shop grocery delivery, which is definitely cheaper - and they have a lot of sales. But sometimes the prices for identical items are weirdly higher there. And the quality not as good. Not sure what happened to the Mediterranean chicken breast. I miss that mainstay. Sometimes you just want a beautifully poached and seasoned cooked piece of chicken. I have been a member since 2020 and they mess up a decent amount but nothing compares to this week. My order -- placed 5 days ahead of time -- was supposed to arrive by 4 but didn't come until after 8. Huge family dinner could not be made. Nowhere to go as all places were full. Then another order later in the week was delivered without half of the items I ordered. Then they wouldn't refund d money to my card -- only a store credit and I will never use them again. It's 7/20 at 11:31 am. My order was to be delivered between 8 and 10. Pause. I called was on hold for 30 minutes. They finally called me back. They informed me my order wasn't on the truck. So nobody contacted me. Nothing, I had to track down this info. They suck. I wasted 3 1/2 hours of a beautiful Friday on this BS. They have consistently been delivering subpar service. They throw the food in the box and whatever "happens, happens"...spills - damaged containers. The customer service ? Dumber than dumb and deliberate about it. And they scam the delivery window. Driver scans the box within the delivery window and then delivers it "whenever" - consistently 1/2 he late. You complain and they tell you the box was "scanned". First - the delivery was late I got a recorded message saying it would be 15 minutes late. When twenty minutes past the delivery time had passed I called the number provided, and was put on a pretty long hold. I listened to very cheerful music and messages about how important I was spoken by angels. Then the rep came on and said she would try to contact transport. So I listened to some more cheerful music. She came back and said they were unable to reach the driver but I was next up on his schedule. The rep's info was almost acceptable, but her tone was inappropriately cheerful and happy, almost like a cartoon character. I waited further, checking the order status on line and looking at our driveway from time to time. After about 40 minutes my husband went outside and found the order had been left without telling us. The FIRST instructions for delivery was they should call me to come take the order. He never did. About 1/2 hour later, the status on the website is the same - in transit, delayed. I'm a longtime FreshDirect customer and was always for the most part satisfied. Then Covid happened and it has been downhill ever since. Since March of 2020 I've had orders not show up, orders missing key products and the notification doesn't come until the entire order is already out for delivery, I've had orders come 4 or more hours late with false timing updates from the driver all along the way. And just today I had an order left down the hall at the wrong apartment. I'd been sitting in my apt wondering why it still hadn't come after receiving the text that it was next, contacted customer service, and that's how I discovered it was left at the wrong apartment. On top of all of that, the pre-made food has gone extremely downhill -- today I got veggie cream cheese that is watery and gross -- and some of the great items, like the $8.99 pizzas, are no longer being offered. And the "re-usable" bags... Don't get me started. They used to have this wonderful service where you would return the bags to the delivery person when receiving your next order. It was brilliant and wonderful. They stopped that during Covid and just never re-instated it. For a whole year I had a closet bursting at the seams with these bags and customer service just shrugged. Finally, instead of reinstating the old collection policy, they have placed the burden on the customers to donate them. Overall a really poor customer experience, and very environmentally unfortunate b/c I now see many FD reusable bags in the garbage. My Delivery Pass was on auto-renew, which I did not realize, or I definitely would have cancelled it this year. Three stars b/c the convenience is there for sure. But I will be shopping much more at Trader Joe's in my neighborhood, and will cancel FD Delivery Pass for next year. read more

I have been a loyal customer for well over a decade and have stopped ordering with them. I usually ordered weekly and my orders were upwards of $100 each. The last straw for me was back on 12/12/22. I had a delivery scheduled early that morning and sprained my ankle before my delivery window taking recycling items down. I called customer service and said I cannot meet them downstairs as I normally do, nor could I go up and down stairs lugging bags, and asked if a message could be passed to drivers to bring my bags up a single short flight of stairs just for that day. I was told message was passed to drivers. I wait and wait and no delivery. After the delivery window passed, I checked the website and saw it said "Order Delivered." My buzzer never rang. I never received a text. So, in spite of a swollen sprained ankle, I had to make my way down a flight of stairs and check to see if they left my bags outside without notification (as they have begun to do at times). No bags. I dragged my swollen ankle back up the stairs and called again and said that either they misdelivered or they left the bags so long ago without ringing the buzzer that someone came and stole them. I also reiterated that clearly my message to have them deliver to my apartment was either not passed along as I was originally told, or was ignored by drivers (which has also happened before when deliveries were delayed by hours and I asked drivers to not deliver the order because I may not be home, but they showed up anyway saying they never got message). At the time I opted for a reorder of missing order, but later decided that I couldn't take the risk with a sprained ankle of having a similar issue, so I decided to cancel the reorder and use Instacart. More expensive, but I needed to pay more for the assurance of items being delivered to my door and not further injuring myself, and the ability to get satisfaction and good customer care should something go wrong. I cancelled the reorder and sent an email of complaint to FD. I would think they would at least respond with an apology for someone who has been a customer since 2010. I never heard from anyone. So, I have not placed an order with them since and they have lost a loyal customer. Don't listen to any cookie cutter response they give here. It's all for show when they couldn't be bothered to provide a response privately and directly to a long-standing customer's email. I gave them ZERO complaints during COVID, but it seems that was simply the start of them taking customers for granted. read more

I have been using their service since 2007 so I write this review with hesitation. I have had delivery issues. Three out of the four times, it arrived really late. One instance they said delivered and I had not received my order. They had to schedule the delivery for the next day. Today I selected the 7-9a time slot. I received a text just before 9am that they will be two hours late. It has now passed that window and I am looking at 4 hours late. I understand that most people are still at home due to COVID but a 6 hour wait window is definitely unacceptable. I will be seeking alternative options for grocery delivery. 1- when using my location as Brooklyn, FreshDirect wasn't an option for review. I switched to NY, NY and it was. FD is everywhere, that's their point, so that is some shenanigans. 2- their selection is not very modern, at no time in my shopping history has it been contemporary. They are way behind the ball with actual market selections found in even the healthy type bodegas I saw in Park Slope for the 15 years I've used FD. That's troubling to me. Don't force your brand, just look around and see what people want. It's not rocket science. 3- their offshoot Food Kick seems to reflect reality more selection wise, but many of the items are greyed out meaning "currently unavailable." Good example is Kite Hill Ricotta- yeah that's hot! And hard to find. Try stocking it? And the division of selection and delivery window size between FK & FD makes FD seem like a coal powered dinosaur. I'm not sure that they want to catch that rap, but it's hitting. 4- bless them, they moved to totes. The totes are great. For the love of all that is good and holy, return them- and FD: you better come out about the totes' lifecycle. Took you way too long to get here. Don't fugg it up! 5- I'm here today driven by their having discontinued my LTR: Fair Trade Organic French Roast Sumatra- ground by choice. They took it out of my cart and I had only one pot left to make and say goodbye. At least we had that time together to say goodbye. I subbed in their newly branded and oddly less recyclable packaged Organic Sumatra and just had the first & last cup of yuck. It tastes like airport or bodega coffee. I will never drink that again. Sometimes I'm driven here to write a bad review, but not often. And this system lumps all of FreshDirect products together with their site & delivery service. They each deserve their own review categories. FD did once try a review system on their site, but it's not on their app which is all I use to shop now. Totally hit or miss. Some deliveries are fine, some are not. Today my order came with about half a cup of milk spilled in the bag. The crazy thing is, my container of milk was NOT leaking, it was from someone else's order. But it was EVERYWHERE and the hallway carpet now needs to be shampooed because it was leaking through the bag. It was on everything. I emailed and they offered to refund the milk! They didn't seem to understand what had happened. I am probably done with them. It was beyond gross. read more

As of today, February 19, 2023, the 2nd relaunch of the Fresh Direct website appears to be a catastrophic failure. They've mistakenly dropped the previous link to New Products, a significant revenue source for Fresh Direct; they've mistakenly eliminated the functionality that allows you to see the estimated delivery time within your regular, reserved time slot, and the link to return to the old version of the site (who wouldn't want to after all these oversights and epic fails) is broken and non-functional. The entire senior leadership team should hang their heads in shame. read more

I LOVE Fresh Direct, and I loved them before COVID. They always have 99.9% of exactly what you ordered. I'm pretty picky about quality of fruits & veggies and they consistently have fantastic produce & meats. I recently decided to use Instacart to place an order with Wegman's, and it was a bit disappointing. The produce was meh, the kale was limp and went directly into the trash. 4 items were missing - which really screwed up my meal plans, and 1 was replaced with an approved replacement. FD just always has everything their website shows so you don't have the manage exceptions or approving replacements. I also price checked every item and FD had better pricing on more items (InstaCart does add a markup to store prices). I wish FD had a few more selections on some things but hands down, they are the best quality groceries around - even against Whole Foods (I feel WF quality has went downhill tremendously - recent fish & meat purchases were unacceptable). Delivery from any store in general is more expensive, but if you're looking for consistent delivery service & good quality - Fresh Direct is the best! If there ever is a problem, they are super responsive & helpful. Over the last 9 years, I've maybe had to contact them 3x for issues. For the other review noting FD doesn't have same day, they DO HAVE SAME DAY for most items. You just have to select the toggle at the top left for Express Delivery. If you have a Delivery Pass membership with FD, you get same day deliveries for free as well. read more

My biggest complaint is that the delivery people don't wear masks or gloves. I'm in NJ which has been hit hard by the virus, they should really be required to at least put on fresh gloves when handling the orders. Other than that it's really good to not have to go to the grocery store and I definitely appreciate it for that. Based on my experience for the past month or so I wouldn't use them if there wasn't a pandemic, but it's very good to have it available for this emergency. For the food itself it's hit or miss. A lot of the frozen stuff appears to have been out of the freezer for a while when it comes (ice cream melted, food defrosting, etc.). Most of the fruit and vegetables go bad very quickly, within a day or two of delivery, and some things have arrived inedible (a bag of potatoes arrived completely green, tomato arrived moldy, etc.) or not in great shape (smashes cookies, very bruised fruit, smashed boxes of things, etc.). I'm happy to have the service and I know they're at high capacity so might be lesser quality control than usual, so I'm letting the issues go. read more

We are a new user to Fresh Direct (FD). The first 2 orders had incredible fruits and vegetables and thought we would be users for a lifetime. The third order was satisfactory, and our recent order was truly a disappointment. It was so lacking in quality that I closed our FD account- didn't even want the store credit. Went shopping today to make up for yesterday's order. Unfortunately for us, it is a time game- it is not even about the money as it is about the time. Absolute incompetence. Their new system is egregiously flawed. Inputting information for payment is next to impossible. When you call customer service, they instruct you to "call your bank" as it could in NO WAY be their fault. They have individuals who are designated to call you on a "secure" line as most of their employees are now remote to take your information...that NEVER happens within the given time perimeter. They will then call you hours later admitting ignorance to your plight and guarantee a call form a "supervisor". That individual will call, boasting managerial clout but in reality can do ZERO to rectify the situation. Our organization worked with their "corporate" department and apparently because we are a not for profit and we had an albeit frugal order ($400+), they decided our business wasn't worth it. We will NEVER work with them again. Furthermore, although we are a small business, we have some significant social media presence. I made the huge mistake of using this service a few years ago and the much bigger mistake of giving them my credit card information. After years of not using their service, I see a $300 charge to my credit card, and subsequently received an email with a huge order that I did not make. Then I get emails saying that the changes to my email and delivery address made! I called and they immediately canceled my order and removed the charge but refused to tell me the email address and delivery addressed that was changed on MY ACCOUNT! This was obviously an inside job and they are protecting the employee committing these crimes. 10 minutes after my call with this company, another charge for $532 was made to my credit card. I'd seen Fresh Direct trucks around my neighborhood so figured it might be a good option for groceries. I looked and found their prices were somewhat cheaper than the area around me. Great! I placed a big order ($300+) since my fridge and pantry were mostly empty (we just moved), and my family has some special dietary needs. It includes what we're having for dinner tonight. I paid for express delivery, got a confirmation email, then an hour later got an email saying my delivery was being prepared. Over three hours after the scheduled delivery time, I try to log in and check, and it says my password is wrong, even though I'm doubly sure it's the correct one (saved in my navigator and I just set it yesterday, so I remember it clearly). I try to reset it anyway, and it freezes on the reset page. I call customer service to ask about my login info and find out when my order is coming. They informed me that surprise! My order was actually canceled, because the large amount triggered a red flag in their system. I received no email about the cancellation. Now I have to run to the grocery store to grab ingredients for dinner at the last minute, and gradually fill my fridge and pantry otherwise (I have no car so it will take multiple trips). I wouldn't mind if I'd just received some communication about the cancellation so I could plan my meals and grocery shopping otherwise. As it stands, I only received notifications that my order was being prepared. I am not interested in placing another order with them if I can't even know whether my order went through or not. The delivery guy left my package on the sidewalk and did not ring the doorbell nor called my phone. He took a picture of the package on the sidewalk as a proof of delivery. Seriously? Ofcourse someone else will take it. You call this a business? The most critical part of your business is to hand the package to the customer. I'd select zero stars if possible. We ordered holiday dinner for 8 to 10 and the box did not arrive as scheduled. We contacted Fresh Direct and were told it was delayed but still coming. We tried again 24 hours later and were told the box was damaged and would not be arriving at all. Fresh Direct made no effort to contact us about this issue or to send a replacement, and we had to scramble to find alternative food at the last minute. I live on a 6 floor walk-up and it's very difficult for me to carry bags up to my apartment. I started a FreshDirect subscription so that someone else could do this for me. I tip well, in advance. They keep leaving the bags in the lobby. I might as well go shopping myself and save the extra money for delivery and tip. I've also had drivers say that I wasn't home to make the delivery when I have been--no buzzer, no call. read more

While I love the quality ... I'm saddened by the actual delivery part. On multiple occasions my order will say delivered but will not be here. When I call customer service I'm told they can deliver tomorrow... but never offered any sort of explanation or credit ... unless I bitterly complain and then I'm offered typically 9.99 (on an order of 150-300$) complain harder it goes up to 20.... My bad rating for FreshDirect results from 2 major faults, which they refuse to rectify. 1. They refuse to remove scales from salmon. All reputable seafood markets clean and de-scale salmon before selling whole or portioning. Not FD. They claim it harms the flesh - rubbish! Ask Citarella, Eataly, Lobster Place - they disagree. 2. FD refuses to allow consumers to have any contact with department management to provide feedback. Instead, they set up a Canadian call center . They're nice people but ineffectual when serious complaints require management's involvement. read more
