Been using FD for YEARS. Like, their express service was sidekick?! On a separate app. That's old. They used to be quality and perfection for service and good quality, specially for meat and fish. Not sure what's happening to the company but it's done. The options are many around for grocery delivery. If you're not on your A game you go down. I made my first order on 11/7/24. Delivery next day between 6xm to 8am. I got up at 5:30am to make sure the order was delivered. I am here, from another state, helping my cancer sick son and his wife who just had surgery. This order was very important... and they CANCELED it without letting me know. So at 8am. I typed in my newly created Fresh Direct password only to find out they'd cancelled if because someone decided that my husband's card was a fraud. When I asked online chat system what the problem was, I was told it was because it was an out state billing address, duh!, and because "you didn't use any promotional codes for your first order like everyone else does" Which is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of in my entire life of 84 years. Because I didn't use any promotional codes LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES? I could use a lot of codes right now, but they would ALL be EXPLETIVES! Seriously? That's the reasoning? The concept is great - grocery delivery to your door! The execution by the deliverypeople is also quite good. So, why two stars? Inconsistent technical interfaces and extremely inconsistent customer service. The service is unreliable. If you don't care if the order shows or not, you're fine. If you're ordering for a specific event or for anything time-sensitive, forget it. Recently, the order interface has been reverting submitted, confirmed orders back into the cart instead of processing them, leaving you grocery-less and confused when it doesn't show up when scheduled. Reach out's to customer service go primarily unanswered. They seem to use some sort of bot system and then overseas answering desks that really have no clue how to help (or just don't care). If you get a "Will" or an "Edwin" or an "Annool" customer service rep, just disconnect and try again. Those 3 are consistently obtuse and unhelpful. They'll waste an hour of your time explaining the issue in paint-by-number terms and then announce happily that they cannot help you. Last but not least, the product quality is also inconsistent. Sometimes, it will be great; sometimes it will be rotting. It's just a toss up. If the customer service were reliable and consistent, I'd put up with the technical glitches for the overall convenience factor, however, with the poor customer service, any initial service benefit is vastly outweighed by the time drain and inefficiency. You spend an hour on the phone and end up with nothing. And to top it off the last two deliveries had their staff try to enter our building without a mask and the other one of their delivery staff threatened our doorman after being instructed to use the service entrance. I have been using FreshDirect for years, since 2008 is when I think I started. It offers a wide selection of quality products. It is not the cheapest, but prices are definitely reasonable. Customer Service is great. Delivery has always been for the most part on time and drivers are very friendly and courteous. There were some glitches during the height of the COVID pandemic, but honestly that was to be expected as it happened with all grocery delivery services at that time. I also find their prepared items are very good. They also rarely substitute. And in addition, I like that their food all comes from a dedicated state-of-the-art warehouse. Unlike InstaCart or DoorDash, it is not someone just grabbing items off a store shelf and throwing them in a bag to bring to you. read more

I have been using Fresh Direct since covid and it was a godsend. my doorman building recently ( several months) require that the delivery person show ID for security purposes. The delivery people refuse to show ID. ( one can draw their own conclusions as to why they refuse!) . As such I have to go down to the lobby and lug my groceries to my apartment! Oh, did I mention I tip in advance! I have contacted fresh direct customer service on multiple occasions but to no avail. Drivers still refuse. I only give them the one star because of the fact that they way over charge for everything. Otherwise the service is good and they always have what you put in your cart. Unlike some other places like stop and shop who almost always short you on 20% of your order claiming out of stock. Best bet is to take them up on their $50 dollars off on your first 2 orders and then after that don't use them. I want to love FreshDirect, but ... tried them for the first time yesterday. Delivery was great. What leads me to leave a less "loving" review is the Heirloom Tomatoes. I was excited about getting them, but they were tasteless and almost immediately became soft. Not sure if they were ripe. I ordered 2 heads of lettuce, they were miniscule. The one good thing were the cheeses, a Goat Gouda was great. At this point, I doubt I'll order again. Veggies are my main focus and it looks unlikely I'll get what I'd like. I think this company is deceptive in their advertising. I have never ordered from them, but a relative recommended me. I was to receive a coupon so I may send groceries to a housebound family member. Fresh Direct would not honor the coupon because another family member was also helping out and sent food to the same housebound relative. I explained the situation and they still would not stand by their word. I have taken my business elsewhere. Firstly I spend 2 hours ordering and then the delivery person doesn't deliver and it's marked delivered. Then I spent two hours looking for the item to get to know that it was never delivered, and then I talked to email or customer service so many times, and then I was charged again without my permission to reorder. I will no longer be using this service. I gifted this to myself as a new mom and wanted one less thing to do. I've ordered from them 12 times, and 5 times I have been missing a part of my order. When I call, it is impossible to get them to deliver what they missed the same day or even to be able to pick up the same day, making it impossible to plan for the week using this service. When asked if I could talk to someone else, I am told that not even the customer service people speak directly to the people above them, which shows in the complete lack of customer service. *** 3.5 stars *** I got a promo for FreshDirect when I moved into my building and initially ignored it - I live above a Whole Foods, after all - but the promo was too good to ignore. $50 off you first two orders of over $99 and free delivery with a 60 day trial membership with Express. I will say that the prices here are higher than elsewhere so I think that convenience is factored into the price. Even with the promo, I was wary of using FreshDirect based on all the negative reviews - late windows, incorrect items, poor customer service - it almost didn't seem worth the trouble to try. But at the end of the day I'm a sucker for a bargain and I gave it a try. No complaints. My order arrived right in the middle of my delivery window, they brought it up to my door in my apartment building, and all the items I selected arrived correctly. I ordered some fresh cut fruit and soups to try, and while the chicken noodle soup and matzo ball soup left something to be desired (just lacking in flavor, but not at all bad), the turkey chili was great. The fruit was fresh and good, although the serving was a bit smaller than I expected (really just enough for one snack). You get $5 off if you get your delivery between Tuesday and Thursday and they even threw in free hotdogs with my first order with Express. I have to say, the promos are quite good and I think FreshDirect's model is getting people to place recurring orders of staples, and it would be great for someone who is consistently ordering the same things and wants the convenience of a set window and delivery. As for me, I'm not sure it's worth the premium if there are no promos since you can so easily get anything delivered nowadays. A fine service though. read more

Fresh Direct prepared foods are dangerous to consumers. Sulfites are not listed in product information. While Fresh Direct informs buyers that their kitchen uses shellfish, nuts, and other highly allergic ingredients, Fresh Direct no longer lists sulfites in the product information tab.They used to provide that information My family had a reaction to the chicken salad because it has sulfites. I wouldn't recommend the product anyway since it was so salty it not fit for human consumption. read more

I placed my first order with Fresh Direct. The initial trial charge went through on my credit card. The charge for the order is pending on my credit card, but here comes the surprise. My order was never delivered. When I tried to log on to the website- where I have a confirmed account, I could not log in -- I was getting a now email is associated error (though I partially show up). I called customer support-- apparently my order was canceled (though I recieved ZERO communication regarding this -- and again the charges are pending on my credit card. Apparently there is a fraud investigation but they cannot tell me anytihng (and yes the account confirmed with a phone number certainly exists as he can see is) but he cannot give me any details. And I was told to just wait and hope that they reached out. I certainly won't try this service again and will not recommend it . read more

I've used FreshDirect for years, but my last two orders had serious refrigeration problems (as in liquid ice cream pops.) I foolishly took a chance and still ate sliced deli chicken from the order and ended up with a 24 hour bout of food poisoning. I'm not sure what's changed -- whether the refrigeration problems are in the warehouse, in the delivery system, or both -- but I'm no longer comfortable buying any refrigerated or frozen items from FreshDirect. I made crispy skin branzino for dinner and it was a perfect 10! Just sprinkle salt and pepper, pan fry with olive oil, add butter and herbes de Provence, squeeze lemon on top. Plums- always sweet and exotic varieties you can't find elsewhere 7. Sugar Kiss & Honey kiss melons from Savor farms, so awesome and never seen anywhere else 8. Oriental lilies- $12.50 a bunch if you buy two, so fragrant and wonderful 9. Dave's Killer Bread- the most amazing healthy bread with lots of chewy grains and seeds- just buy it. 10. Grapes from Grapery- the Flavor Promise red grapes and the most flavorful ever and the Cotton Candy and Moon Drop varieties are so unique! 11. Boars Head Cold cuts- yes, everyone sells this but they have a 3 item deal for $11, so it's convenient. Cons: 1. the prices are not that low and I wind up spending $300-500 a week if I don't control myself. 2. Why is the free gift promotion only on Mondays? I just got my weekly / bi-weekly FreshDirect grocery delivery. Ordering from FreshDirect is without fail an ideal delivery experience. They deliver on time, bring my order up 4 flights to my apartment door (I give an extra cash tip because #grateful). Are masked, follow COVID-19 protocols. Everything I requested is in the order that was delivered - and if anything is missing, it's a quick painless credit on their app. The produce is incredibly fresh and delicious. The figs right now omg #obsessed - and other specialty fruit are worth every penny. It all TASTES GOOD. Sliced deli meats are packaged well and so fresh and good. Cubed cheese so yummy. Castlevetrano (sp?) green olives are out of this world. They have 4 options of Siggi's triple cream yogurt. #heckYEAH! I love the fact that if I have a delivery that's scheduled to come in a day or more, I can edit my order up until 8:00 pm the night before. It's great if you regret that treat and reconsider - and especially if you forget an item. Is it more expensive than a typical non-NYC grocery store? Yes. But the quality and peace of mind is 100% worth it. I have learned to order strategically. And remain grateful. I supplement with Stop & Shop grocery delivery, which is definitely cheaper - and they have a lot of sales. But sometimes the prices for identical items are weirdly higher there. I'm a longtime FreshDirect customer and was always for the most part satisfied. Then Covid happened and it has been downhill ever since. Since March of 2020 I've had orders not show up, orders missing key products and the notification doesn't come until the entire order is already out for delivery, I've had orders come 4 or more hours late with false timing updates from the driver all along the way. And just today I had an order left down the hall at the wrong apartment. I'd been sitting in my apt wondering why it still hadn't come after receiving the text that it was next, contacted customer service, and that's how I discovered it was left at the wrong apartment. On top of all of that, the pre-made food has gone extremely downhill -- today I got veggie cream cheese that is watery and gross -- and some of the great items, like the $8.99 pizzas, are no longer being offered. And the "re-usable" bags... Don't get me started. They used to have this wonderful service where you would return the bags to the delivery person when receiving your next order. It was brilliant and wonderful. They stopped that during Covid and just never re-instated it. For a whole year I had a closet bursting at the seams with these bags and customer service just shrugged. Finally, instead of reinstating the old collection policy, they have placed the burden on the customers to donate them. Overall a really poor customer experience, and very environmentally unfortunate b/c I now see many FD reusable bags in the garbage. My Delivery Pass was on auto-renew, which I did not realize, or I definitely would have cancelled it this year. Three stars b/c the convenience is there for sure. I have been a loyal customer for well over a decade and have stopped ordering with them. I usually ordered weekly and my orders were upwards of $100 each. The last straw for me was back on 12/12/22. I had a delivery scheduled early that morning and sprained my ankle before my delivery window taking recycling items down. I called customer service and said I cannot meet them downstairs as I normally do, nor could I go up and down stairs lugging bags, and asked if a message could be passed to drivers to bring my bags up a single short flight of stairs just for that day. I was told message was passed to drivers. I wait and wait and no delivery. After the delivery window passed, I checked the website and saw it said "Order Delivered." My buzzer never rang. I never received a text. So, in spite of a swollen sprained ankle, I had to make my way down a flight of stairs and check to see if they left my bags outside without notification (as they have begun to do at times). No bags. I dragged my swollen ankle back up the stairs and called again and said that either they misdelivered or they left the bags so long ago without ringing the buzzer that someone came and stole them. I also reiterated that clearly my message to have them deliver to my apartment was either not passed along as I was originally told, or was ignored by drivers (which has also happened before when deliveries were delayed by hours and I asked drivers to not deliver the order because I may not be home, but they showed up anyway saying they never got message). At the time I opted for a reorder of missing order, but later decided that I couldn't take the risk with a sprained ankle of having a similar issue, so I decided to cancel the reorder and use Instacart. More expensive, but I needed to pay more for the assurance of items being delivered to my door and not further injuring myself, and the ability to get satisfaction and good customer care should something go wrong. I cancelled the reorder and sent an email of complaint to FD. I would think they would at least respond with an apology for someone who has been a customer since 2010. I never heard from anyone. So, I have not placed an order with them since and they have lost a loyal customer. Don't listen to any cookie cutter response they give here. It's all for show when they couldn't be bothered to provide a response privately and directly to a long-standing customer's email. I gave them ZERO complaints during COVID, but it seems that was simply the start of them taking customers for granted. read more

Totally hit or miss. Some deliveries are fine, some are not. Today my order came with about half a cup of milk spilled in the bag. The crazy thing is, my container of milk was NOT leaking, it was from someone else's order. But it was EVERYWHERE and the hallway carpet now needs to be shampooed because it was leaking through the bag. It was on everything. I emailed and they offered to refund the milk!
