I still can't say enough about how much I enjoy visiting Frey Ranch. No matter how many times I visit, I still learn something new about farming techniques, the distillation process, aging methods, and product finishing. Everyone at the ranch is so welcoming and friendly. It shows how much they love what they do and how much they want to share with us. The summer food truck series is great because it is an additional incentive to get people to come out and experience the ranch for the first time. There has been some fantastic Mexican food, burgers, Balinese, ice cream, and many others. The whiskey tasting is very special because you get to learn about what you're drinking from the people who actually made it. The distillery tour is fascinating because it is a working facility and you get to see real whiskey being made. Standing in the rock house makes you realize how the climate affects the whiskey aging process. In the winter, it is very cool with the scent of Oak. In the summer, it is warm and you still smell the oak, but the evaporating alcohol is very strong. There is always a special release whiskey available in addition to their usual production whiskeys. This trip I was able to get a single barrel 100% wheat. As always, it is amazing! read more

We came here for a tour and tasting for my husband's birthday and had a great experience! They are only open for tours and tastings on Saturdays from 12-4pm. I checked in advance to see if I was allowed to bring our baby and they said yes; we love a kid friendly place! They do not serve food here but occasionally have a food truck on site. We showed up right at noon when they opened, they have a chalk board out front listing the tour start times which run every 30 minutes. We started with a tour and it lasted about 20 minutes total. We got to see the distillery process in the main building and the barrel warehouse next door! After the tour, we went over to the main tasting room where we got to taste about 10 different whiskeys. I was surprised we got to try them all! It was a great way to see what we liked best and decide which bottle to purchase. We even got to try their single grain series which sells for $114/bottle. Our favorite was the Frey Ranch American Single Malt Smoked, so we purchased a bottle of that one for $59! There is no seating inside, so we stood at one of the barrel tables and at the bar for our tasting. They do have rocking chairs out front, so we went to sit out there as we sipped one of our whiskeys. The staff are all super friendly, we enjoyed talking with all of them. There is a gift shop inside as well, we purchased a cool candle that is made out of one of their whiskey bottles and had the most lovely scent of apple + maple bourbon. After the tasting, we walked around the property and took some pictures. We had never been to Fallon and this was such a fun day trip from Reno for us to explore a new place and support a great local business! read more

Beautiful distillery and farm in pretty Fallon. Take a trip out to see them and their tasting room. They taste all of their whiskeys if they have them available to purchase. I loved the tasting glasses. I visited on an event weekend. The outside tent with sample cocktail and recipe was perfect for the crowd that attended. Boozy pickle sample, too. I found the event on the Edible Reno Tahoe magazine Facebook page, so check out that publication for foodie articles and places to visit. The tasting room was nice but for this event crowded. What a great day! While it might be a bit of a distance to drive, an hour and a half one way for me, it was so worth it! The grounds themselves were very nice and well-maintained. I have done wine tasting before but this was a first for me in several ways. This was the first Yelp Elite outing that I went on. What a great way to get introduced to Yelp Elite! Second, whiskey tasting, hmmm doesn't all whiskeys taste the same? Ah NO! I learned so much today about this great estate distillery. Talk about taking control of the smallest details to make sure their whiskeys are consistently the best. The tour of the grounds and distillery was so informational all the way to how they have the water runoff drain, the use of the "byproducts" at the dairy farm next door, to the great fertilizer that they use to keep the soil in great condition. Of course, the tasting of the different whiskeys had to be the highlight. While the rye whiskey was very good, and so were all the others but the Uncut Whiskey won out for me, at least for today! read more

We went out last weekend for the barrel tasting and release event. We got there right when they opened and there was already a line about 30 yards long, and they offered us coffee, bourbon, and donuts. It made the wait in line that much more easy to take. When we got inside, we were able to taste the limited series spirits released in a 375 mL size and we were able to taste the three barrel select releases happening that day. All were interesting and made the drive worth it. It was our first visit, and because of the crowd we decided to not pursue the tour, which just gives us a reason to return. And we will. read more

Quality/Quantity - My favorite of the 4 tastings were the Straight Rye Whiskey, then the Wheat Single Grain Series. Of course, my go-to is what I am drinking now, see above. Lastly Oat Single Grain Series - An acquired taste. Now if you gave me a free bottle, I am sure I can get to like it, LOL. Atmosphere - What a cool place. A nice "field trip" for me today, a nice get away. 1.5 hours from Reno, so plan accordingly. Also might not be GPS friendly, but you can't miss the place. Small tasting room. Lots of history, take your time to check out all the pictures and articles, etc. Great tour of the distillery. Plenty of parking. 1500-2000 acres. Service - 6 stars, from Sandy, wife of the master distiller, to the tour guide, sorry I forgot his name. The tour was after the generous tasting. I am also so impressed on how efficient you guys are. Only 10 employees working the distillery and only 3 working the farm? Sometimes 4 when the owner helps on the farm! Price - Free + generous tip. Please tip, they deserve it!! First of all, what a beautiful Estate! My boyfriend and I have been wanting to come here for about a year and take a tour. They offer tours on Saturdays, and you don't need to sign up, you just show up and wait for the next tour guide to be available. The day: May 14th. The reason: Old World Coffee + Frey Ranch collaborated on coffee beans and a used barrel. The review: My boyfriend and I showed up at Frey Ranch around 1-130. We went into the tasting room and bought a bottle of the bourbon and then caught the tour. It was so neat to hear how Frey is a single source Distillery, and how they disperse the waste out of the distilling process, I won't spoil it so you can go hear first hand. We had a great tour guide. If he said his name during the tour I don't recall, but I have a friend who lives out there and based on her knowledge of the property and employees, his name may have been Kyle. He did a really great job and was super knowledgeable and entertaining to listen to. The tours take about 20 minutes, more or less depending on how many questions are asked in the tour. The disappointment: By our own late attendance, we missed being able to buy a bag of the coffee. But we were able to try a sample of it at the Old World Coffee tent. We each got an iced latte and sat and enjoyed the property. We are hoping that Old World will do another batch of their coffee beans in a Frey Ranch barrel. The overall: Aside from us being 'late to the party', 10/10 recommend Frey Ranch, the coffee and the Distillery. What a great experience and story. I appreciate the fact they grow all their grains for production on the 1800 acre farm just south of Fallon. Upon arriving to the estate, notice the pond with a diving board beside the home that was built by a senator back in the day. If you do the tour, you will later learn the pond is used as recirculating cooling water in the winter for the grains and yeast. Take the free 20 minute tour, it's worth it to hear the story and process behind their good whiskey and bourbon. All the staff is friendly and hospitable. Jesse, who conducted our tour was great, and his down to earth and knowledgeable tour was entertaining. As it turned out, they got a barrel that tested to 140.18 proof that they named HAZMAT. And they were only selling 120 bottles from this barrel. So we missed out. Fortunately they also had 138 and 132 proof barrels so we got those but no bragging rights. They had people from California and Arizona. Get there earlier next time. read more

Our very own estate Distillery, a must visit for any bourbon/rye connoisseur. As others have written, Estate means the entire process, from growing the grain to bottling, is done on premises (one of only 2 in the country). Located in Fallon, it's any easy drive from Reno and well worth the trip for free tastings and tour. Note: they have discontinued the 'white' spirits, Vodka, Gin and Absinthe and are concentrating their efforts on Rye and Bourbon. Churchill Vineyards has also stopped producing, as well. But, hey, we're only here for the stars of the show! With mid-60s temperatures this past Saturday, it was a perfect day to check out the facility. As you drive in, you enter a tree-lined canopy that must look incredible when in bloom. Plenty of parking in and around the tasting room. The room itself is spacious, with a decent size bar as well as bar tables to keep your social distance (masks are required when not tasting and taking the tour). Friendly and knowledgeable staff greeted us and we were started off right away with proper whiskey glasses. The ladies started with the 2 white wines that were still available...the boys got right to the good stuff! The bourbons and rye are very well crafted, smooth and flavorful. Easily drink on their own or in your favorite cocktail. The single barrel bourbon is over the top (this one just over 126 proof). For the proof, not much of a bite on the first sip, easy going on the second. Yeah, worth the drive! Tour time. Jesse, our tour guide is extremely knowledgeable and answered the many questions the group had. We toured the distilling room, the mash room as well as the barrel room, getting an education in each. This is a well-oiled machine that produces an exquisite product to be proud of. For the quality of the spirits, it's well-priced, compared to other mass-produced names. You can probably save a few dollars going to the local markets and liquor super stores, but you'll miss the experience. At this time they are only open Sat 12-4pm so you're window is small, but if you get a chance it's a pleasant visit! There is a small tasting room with a bar to stand at or a few barrel to stand around. The gal that provided our tastings was funny and personable. We got a taste of each of their four current whiskeys including the special single barrel rye whiskey. They also have some nice merchandise for sale such as t-shirts, caps, candles, and some very cool, pricey insulated flasks! Once we did the tastings we wandered the property a bit. There was a tour going on but I don't know if it was free or reservation only, but we missed how to be a part of it. Bourbon Myth They sent out emails stating that they're putting up their limited single-barrel Bourbon (limit 2/per) up for sale for one day only, which was yesterday (11/12/21). Normally the only way to obtain a bottle of their single barrel is to actually visit the distillery and since this was a one-time thing my buddy and I were kinda excited to score some. Well the day of the website store is crashed *ALL DAY*. We tried and tried, they even sent out an email around noonish stating they were aware of the problem and the site would be "back up soon." Well, suffice it to say we keep trying all evening and no dice. My buddy was able to get some in his cart and went all the way to check-out until the site crashed on him as he was about to enter payment info--this happened to him multiple times. I gave up around 6 p.m. but he kept trying well into the night and still no dice. I woke up at 4 a.m. to look and, of course, the claim they're "sold out." So basically I'm calling bullshit and throwing a hissy-fit here on Yelp. :0) Tldr: Still love their whisky but they really pissed me off today so I'm just venting. What an amazing experience!!! The staff here is beyond friendly and knowledgeable about the product. The tasting and tour is complementary and but I am sure you will not be leaving there empty handed as their product is phenomenal. They have 2 different types of gin one that has juniper and sage brush flavors and then one that has lemon and peppercorn. The lemon peppercorn was a crowd pleaser for our group. They also have Absinthe which we all tried but was not my personal favorite but I am also not a huge black licorice fan. The Malbec wine was by far my favorite that they were tasting. Turns out they made wine, vodka and brandy while they were waiting for the whiskey and those were great as well. They only have a limited number of those left, I grabbed 2 bottles of brandy (tasted like sweet caramel) and a bottle of vodka too very vanilla-y yummy! They had a straight bourbon and a Rye when we were there and in a month they were going to have an oat and something else available too. I'd love to try that oat! Continuing our exploration of Fallon, we saw that Frey Ranch offered tours and tastings from noon to 4pm on Saturdays so we decided to check it out. This is also the home of Churchill Vineyards which we didn't realize until we got there. They offer tastings every Saturday from 12pm to 4pm. The property is located about 8 miles outside of town and is easy to find. There are a series of buildings but it's easy to identify the tasting room and there is ample parking. There was even a cute farm dog that lazily greeted us when we got out of the car. The tasting room was inviting and the two ladies immediately greeted us and made us feel very welcome. They explained that a tour was currently going on but that we were welcome to begin tasting while we waited. We also noticed they had a BOGO sale on their apparel for small business Saturday which was a nice surprise! We started with the wines and then began tasting the spirits. It was fun to try things and learn that all of the grains used to produce their gin, vodka, bourbon whiskey, absinthe and other spirits are grown, distilled, malted and bottled right there on the property -- which I'm sure can't be said for most places. The tour in progress when we arrived finished up and while we originally had the place to ourselves it quickly filled up. We joined another couple on our tour and it was informative and interesting. They have a beautiful property and it's impressive to see what they are doing! So glad we stopped in - it was an awesome experience and we ended up getting a few things for ourselves and a Christmas gift as well. read more

I first tried the bourbon by friends recommendation and finding at Total Wine. I was lucky enough after about trying for 4 hours non stop to get my hands on their special release that was an online sale only. The website crashed immediately and they had to get it up and running again. I finally gave up and said it was not meant to be but alas I tried one last time around 1900 that night of the online release and was able to get my 2 bottles. This special release is amazing. Many are upset they were not able to get their hands on the bottles because the website crashed but I think Frey Ranch underestimated their product and how much people live it. Frey Ranch is a great local distillery that's grows their own grains to make their bourbon. The bourbon is delicious, and made locally. I have heard they hold tastings on Saturdays but have yet to make it out to the distillery itself. Definitely need to make a trip out there to try some of what they have in hand. We were exploring Fallon this October and decided to check out a Heritage Distillery in the area. Frey Ranch has been on this land for 165 years. Growing, distilling, maturing and bottling are done here. Delicious boutique spirits and wines are available for tasting. Bourbon Whisky, Rye Whiskey, Vodka, Gin and Absinthe were the samples we tried. Bourbon Whiskey and Gin were our take homes. I even like the bottles! There is a short tour of the distillery and barrel house as well which was pretty cool. Though we didn't sample the wines, I've heard they are quite nice. It made an excellent day trip for us. Covid may have put a damper on the ability to experience this lovely place, but keep in mind that eventually they will be able to continue serving both locals and tourists alike. read more

This place was well worth the hour and a half drive out from Reno, and has been a distillery I've been itching to visit since calling Reno home. The experience at the distillery is small, sure, but definitely worth the visit. There are two primary components - the tasting and the tour. The tasting consisted of 6 whiskeys in total, being their Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Straight Rye Whiskey, 100% Wheat Whiskey, 100% Oat Whiskey, 100% Malted Corn Whiskey, and Quad Malted Grain Whiskey. I've tried the standard two offerings before, which were just as good as always, but the latter four were distillery exclusives, only available to taste and purchase on site. The two malted options weren't to my liking, but were mellow, and I could see their appeal to those who like that flavor profile. I ended up purchasing the 100% Wheat and 100% Oat whiskeys. I LOVED the 100% Wheat offering, but the 100% Oat offering was...interesting. It is perhaps the most unique whiskey I've tried to date, and I have had plenty. I had to get it while I could to see if it grows on me. The tour was quick, but very informative, and it was a great look at the process to create this beautiful spirit. They walk you through the fermenting process, distilling process, and their barreling warehouse. I had a positive interaction with every employee, and their site is beautiful. Extra points for their sustainability: They detailed how their used mash goes to the dairy farm next door, which they get manure from to fertilize their fields, which then is used to grow the grains used to produce their whiskey - a wonderful reciprocal relationship to use the most they can with what they have. We headed out on Saturday with the December weather deciding it would have the sun shining in Churchill County for our trek out to Fallon. We arrived to the beautiful Frey Ranch to happily find several others had the same idea. We were warmly greeted by Ranch staff, instantly making room for us at the tasting bar by starting us out with the Estate Wines that have been on my favorite list for many years. While we were sipping the Malbec a tour opened up so we jumped on the opportunity to join the group. The tour took us next door with our guide Matthew showing us the stills that make Frey Ranch Vodka, Gin and the newest addition to the Estate Distillery their Bourbon Whiskey ~ yaasssss please I will take all three!!! Upstairs to the mash and fermentation room....I LOVE love the smell!! Where current batches were bubbling away - YAY more spirits in the making! Then on to the barrel room to see where they house and age the Bourbon Whiskey. I would give a little more detail of the tour however I want everyone to come out to enjoy all that is shared by the wonderful staff here at Frey Ranch. We finished up by returning to the tasting room with Colby Frey now inside pouring for patrons sharing stories with my husband along with another couple that was there too. We moved down the tasting menu of course with our objective to sample the Bourbon Whiskey - this was beyond worth the drive out to Frey Ranch and Fallon!! We sampled V.S.O.P. Brandy since I had been literally dying to try this when they first announced its arrival to their line andddd I was NOT disappointed. My husband sampled the Frey Gin to finish the offerings before we made our purchases. This wasn't just about coming out for our complimentary tour of the Estate Distillery while sipping the Bourbon Whiskey. We had to take home some spirits & wine for the celebratory birthday dinner. We rounded up our visit with making sure to grab a bottle of the VSOP Brandy, a few bottles of the Churchill Vineyard wine and of course two bottles of the Frey Ranch Bourbon Whiskey. Estate Distilleries offer the owners a bit more control, as they are able to control the production of every ingredient that goes into making the final product. At the same time, there's a bit more variability too, courtesy of the land itself. Bad weather years, low water, and soil chemistry imbalances can all yield less than desirable crops that effect the finished product. This 1200 acre ranch is located on the outskirts of my beloved town of Fallon, NV. I had heard of this distillery and decided to pay a visit on their Customer Appreciation Day. Located off of the 95 highway going South, Frey Ranch Estate Distillery produces gin, vodka, bourbon whiskey, and absinthe on their premises. It was very easy to find; 95 South to Dodge, turn left. The entrance to the farm has a tree lined road, large pond to the left, vineyards to the right. Since 1850, they have been farming grains including wheat, corn, barley, rye and alfalfa. To the left is a large estate, gazebo and grounds with a swing. There were several people there visiting and having a picnic. Great place for kids to play and run around. The silos and tasting room is straight in the back along with the distillery. They were giving tours. Saturdays from noon to 4:00PM they give tours. If you are new to Fallon, this is a great way to come from Reno, see the distillery and sample some of our local flavor. There was also a "hall" where more tasting was done, serving cocktails and there was music. The servers in the tasting room were very friendly and helpful. Absolutely worth a visit!! Stunning location, beautiful tasting room, super nice staff and a great tour of the operation. We really enjoyed our visit and will swing by again next time we're in the area. Horrible experiences. I went into the bar area and stood in the back waiting to get to the bar and other people would make their way up to the bar. I left with nothing and no tasting. No rhyme or reason of how thing work in The bar area. Just out of spite I will not buy their product in town now. read more

If not already obvious, Frey Charles P Jr Ranch is a gemstone in the Oasis of Nevada known as Fallon. The drive in is pleasant. The first street towards the distillery is lined with trees--somewhat worthy of a formal picture session. As you pass their pond, vineyards, farm equipment, an old tree-swing hanging from a branch 40 feet up, and a senators home, you get a quaint/welcoming feeling to a classic American farm. Frey Ranch is 1 of 3 places that does every single process to make their product (from planting the seeds of barley/rye/etc. to bottling). With all this said, if you're in the lowly town of Fallon, you must check out Frey Ranch if you get a chance! Their tasting is every Saturday from noon-4:00PM and, most importantly, it is free! They will serve you 2 white wines, 2 red wines, their gin, their vodka, and brandy (at least the time I went). I liked the wines a lot and their gin had a lot of character (I'm just not a gin type of person so I can't rave about it). The brandy was decent--I'd love to try their whiskey next time they make it. The ladies who run the counter are very friendly. We went on a tour of the grounds which included the huge old-fashioned-looking distillation machine, the huge vats, and (the best part), the warehouse of barrels where you can get a tasting straight from the barrels. I've been to a good amount of distilleries in my life (to include many in the UK), but I haven't had a chance to try to some spirits straight from the barrel, so this experience made my visit well worth it. Since this distillery is so small, it's definitely an intimate experience where you can directly speak with people who are so passionate about their art. I won't be surprised if in 5-10+ years Frey Ranch might be a more household name. read more
