In the last few years, I have gotten to try out a few of the spirits coming out of Seven Troughs, yet up until now, I haven't had the chance to visit their facility. Taking the opportunity at last, I certainly was glad to have stopped by and gotten introduced to more of their wonderful products. I walked in and immediately asked about a tasting flight, getting a little taste of everything. Probably the one product of theirs which I am most familiar with is the Argentum Gin. A collaboration with Great Basin Brewing, this gin is very smooth and mellow, and doesn't hit you over the head like some other gins do. It is great in martinis, but I just enjoy sipping on a shot of it to enjoy the flavor in it. But the Argentum aside, I was really looking forward to seeing what else they had in store, and I was not disappointed. I was served up a glass of the Reno Rodeo vodka. This was an alright one, though maybe a little unimpressive. I also got a taste of their Moonshine, which the bartender described as an "angry" drink. And believe me... it was. Next up was their bourbon, which I found to be quite the excellent brown liquor. I tried the chocolate liqueur, which was just bursting with flavor and velvety smooth. And they even dished up some of their cherries preserved in moonshine. The fruit was good, but the infused booze was really superb. Lastly, I finished up with a newer addition to their lineup, called Old Commissary. This is a recipe from the 1800's, based on the first whiskey produced in the Nevada Territory out at Fort Ruby. This is a 100% barley whiskey, unaged, that still has both some malty sweetness in it, but also quite a kick. Definitely a very intriguing drink, to be sure. I finished my flight, and could go for one more drink. There is a list of cocktails on the wall to choose from, but the bartender was kind enough to mix me up a custom beverage. Drink in hand, I chatted up my server, who was very friendly and eager to talk about their company, their distillation process, and even gave me a quick look behind the scenes. Really fantastic and friendly service here! And naturally, they have bottles of just about everything on sale on the shelves out front should you want to take some booze home with you. The distillery itself is located in the warehouse district of south Sparks, east of McCarran Blvd. Parking is pretty easy, though it's a small lot. Just watch out for any trucks coming and going from the other businesses. All in all, I can't believe it took me this long to stop by. I was thoroughly impressed with their products and their service, and it is clear these guys have a real passion for making the best liquors they can, and being proud Nevada products at that. Located in a small building in an industrial area of sparks is a the distillery for Seven Troughs. They also have a speakeasy located in The Basement, but this is where you come to learn about their distilling process and taste test some fine spirits. We got a Groupon a while back and used that (about two months ago), but even if you don't have a Groupon, it's still worth the cost. There is a small bar area and a few shelves of merchandise in the front. In the back space is a high ceiling garage type space where the distilling, the barrel-aging, and bottling is done. All in all, a fun little tour and tasting, especially for the whiskey drinker. Our tour guy was laid back, friendly, and knowledgeable and the product is of great quality. read more

My friends, hubby, and I visited on a Saturday night around 4:30 pm for a tasting. They're located in an industrial area. The front area is the tasting room and the back warehouse is where they distill and bottle. Wow, we were able to sample 9 different spirits (vodka, gin, rum, whiskey, bourbon), a bbq sauce, a bloody mary mix, a cherry, and a pickle. I enjoyed most of the tastings and especially loved the cask bourbon and coffee liqueur. Nick gave us a quick tour and provided us with descriptions of every spirit while another person (didn't catch her name) provided the samples. We had a great time and all ended up buying a few bottles including that delicious Moonshine BBQ sauce. read more

As the Reno area grows with craft beers we now have a few distilleries. Seven was born in 2009, but didn't start distilling until 2013 when the craft distilling bill was finally passed. The second legal license went to Seven. Call ahead for tasting times and days. And to arrange a very informative tour. Presently it is a staff of two working out of a small two room warehouse. But you'll be amazed at what these two people are doing in this limited space. Kelsey has a fabulous personally and her knowledge of Seven and the business really shows. They are creating distilled spirits at a craft level. The spirits are in small batch quantities enabling them to create higher quality spirits with a distinct taste. Moonshine, whiskey, vodka and rum with local sourced grains and a recipe from the 18th century. You can even purchase your own small cask and have them age a product just for you. Microdistilleries are a labor of love having to contend with extensive regulations and complex methods. Seven Troughs Distilling was recommended to me on my last trip to Reno, and they did not disappoint. The distillery and tasting room are located in Sparks in an industrial area south of Interstate 80 off McCarran. For a small fee, you can sample the various spirits made on site. They offer several styles including vodka, gin, and whiskey. The latter is available in several formats including an aged bourbon. Aging whisky in the high desert is a different process making a unique spirit compared to other locations. The staff at Seven Troughs love their art and their state. All of the ingredients are local including the grain which is really impressive. Get a tour if possible too. If you cannot make it, they sell the spirits in local liquor stores too. read more

Seven Troughs Distilling is a great micro distillery and is first to the Reno area. This was my first visit and I was immediately impressed! Kelsey greeted us as soon as we walked in and was very pleasant and accommodating. We had a sampling of their flight of current spirits as she explained how they are made and your history. After our sampling we had a tour of the facility and Kelsey walked us through the distilling process from start to finish and we even had the opportunity to try some spirits directly from the still. We had a great time visiting and would recommend a visit anytime for a tour or to pick up a bottle of top notch local spirits! read more

There's little mechanization in the operation because it keeps their methods true to the ways of the old days. Their process is almost entirely done by hand, meaning there's a lot of work involved in producing each bottle of Recession Proof Moonshine, Nevada Bourbon and Black Rock Rum, and that translates to a limited supply at the moment. Luckily for us, there's a tasting room where you can buy that which you cannot at retail. But probably the coolest thing going on at Seven Troughs right now is the ability to purchase a personalized barrel of Nevada Bourbon that you can watch age and taste at various stages along the way. The barrels come in two sizes and both carry a brand that is all your own. Edge Nightclub has really taken to this and are now offering "barrel service" in their VIP area, so you might see a few with their moniker on the shelf. Beyond the spirits themselves, Seven Troughs offers a whole lot more including distillery tours, private parties and of course, sampling in their tasting room. I can't believe I waited this long to discover Seven Troughs! I went this past Saturday with some friends because *thank you Yelp* I had won a bottle of Reno Rodeo Legacy Vodka at an event. We went to get the booze and take the tour. Oh, but there's tastings you say? I did not partake (someone has to drive!) but the tiwn and our friend sat down and sampled all the wares. They were most impressed by the Gin but found the Vodka to be quite smooth as well. The Moonshine..well that's an acquired taste. I plan on going back to try the Rum and a mixed cocktail or too. The best part of the visit was learning the history of moonshine in Nevada and hearing about the great lengths that Seven Troughs went to in order to replicate it. Bryce was an awesome guide on our adventure, his passion for the product shines through and made for a most enjoyable experience. read more

Wow! Where do I begin? Tom Adams is great, the first thing I really noted which is significant to me is that he is obviously very family focused. That might seem ironic to some but I definitely get it and appreciate it as well. Secondly, knowledgeable, patient, intelligent, and driven. Perhaps that was really two through 5 but you get it. He enjoys his craft, more importantly he cares about his community and the people he shares it with as well. I already touched on this but I'll reiterate anyway, intelligent and coupled with his passion he is industrious and crafty and determined. It took a lot of time to get where he is and he is deeply invested, more than a lot of people would spend their time to accomplish and he has done it well. May I add that, if I haven't conveyed already these are good people, they have good hooch and will show you how to make good cocktails with them. The how to class was very very cool! read more

For me, it's never a bad time to have a good glass of scotch or a bloody mary. My partner and I decided to try this place out and do the whole tasting and tour experience one day and I will definitely be back when they move to their new location. It was great! I've been on a distillery tour before and so I had somewhat of an idea of what to expect but what I appreciated most about this tour was that it was very personalized. We got to chat with the "tour guide" about every single aspect we were interested in and it was fabulous. I'm originally from Elko so the fact that they make an authentic version of old commissary, Nevada's first commercially produced whiskey, I was really excited and into it! I recommend definitely trying the bloody mary if only for the Boozy pickles, the best thing I've ever eaten maybe. Overall, service 5/5, drinks 5/5, and just great overall. read more

My one day of work in Reno was a day 7 Troughs was closed. Called and left message that I was in town only for the day. My call was returned in a few minutes inviting me to stop by, which I did. A little moonshine tasting and a small purchase later, I departed a happier traveler and hopefully the next time in the area, can spend more time, get a tour and buy more. Great tour of the facility, staff and owners are very knowledgable. They are quick to show and tell their passion of distilling. It is a little hard to find but with google maps and the right address the place was very easy to spot. When you walk in you are automatically greeted by the staff and the tasting room. You can get 3 free taste, and a small price of 5 dollars you can taste all that they have to offer. The staff went over each of the spirits with us and told us about the history of each piece. Then she took us for the tour of the facility, granted it is small, but they do great things with what they have. We bought their bourbon and other spirits afterwards. This place is located south of Glendale just east of McCarran. The tasting room is open 3 to 6 PM on Friday and 11 AM to 6 PM on Saturday. Thanks to Nevada Assemblymen Frierson, Horne, Segerblom and Flores and AB 156, it is now easier to own and operate micro-distilleries in Nevada. It also allows them to sell directly to retailers and operate tasting rooms. There are however regulations like limiting two bottles per customer per month and a two-ounce tasting limit, although, they also serve cocktails here. In Kentucky, you only get one ounces total. In fact, there are dry counties in Kentucky where you can't even drink alcohol. Stuff like this keeps reminding me what a great state Nevada is and how we like to treat its citizens as adults and not kids. With the explosive growth of whiskey and cocktails, there will be a micro-distillery boom, perhaps not as big as the micro-brewery boom. At least I've found it hard to sit down to drink seven cocktails or bourbons without blacking out while I can easily handle seven beers. I was surprised that they chose Sparks, because Cashell didn't want them in Reno. Cashell was on some holy god mission to clean up Reno's image and scapegoat tattoo parlors and strip clubs. How the hell does a micro-distillery get thrown into that category? People drinking cocktails and bourbons, while getting younger and younger, are none-the-less a bit older and wealthier than the troublemaking crowd. Cashell is so stuck in the 70's it's not even funny. And if he didn't notice, we're in Nevada where you can pay to have sex and throw your money away and smoke medicinal pot. He made his fortune off legalized gaming, throwing away your hard-earned money and sometimes taking it out of the family savings, and he's all high and mighty about micro-distilleries. Pleaaaaaase. The only problem with micro-distilleries is that it takes eight years to age bourbon, so what do you do in the meantime? You have to sell moonshine which is un-aged whiskey. You can also distill rum, vodka, and gin in the meantime. I'm not a big fan of moonshine, but like un-oaked chard, it is a purer expression of the grain that goes into it. I'm an oak-bomb fan, so I'll have to wait eight years before seeing how these guys do bourbon. It may be less if the area's climate speeds up the aging process. In the meantime, it's good to know, these guys are doing everything right from start to finish. They get their grains from Winnemucca and recycle the malt byproduct that gets fed to pigs. Unlike beer and wine, distilled liquor is the process of using the evaporation of the fermented grain. If you bottle wine, it will still age, because there are still chemical reactions. Once you bottle distilled liquor, it stops aging. There is no automation here except an electric stirrer. They also designed and built their own distiller. It sort of reminded me of the doctor on MASH who built a distillery in his tent. They ferment the grains in open oak barrels which they have to clean out daily. It's a lot of hard labor, but they wanted to make alcohol the way it was done pre-industrial. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of craft knowledge in the Industrial Age. Not only did we make everything by hand, but we accumulated a wealth of specialty knowledge. While many craftspeople wrote books about their craft, many simply passed it on generation to generation. With the Information Age and its quest for specialized knowledge and quality, we have started to backtrack and relearn the history and tradition of craft. While there are many benefits to Industrialization, we are becoming increasingly aware of its costs including our health and the health of our habitat. Of course, this place is halfway there. There is the question of aging, and this area's unique climate, it's altitude, dryness, and cold winters will create unique challenges or perhaps opportunities. Knowing how much effort they put into creating the moonshine, I'm confident they'll wind up with some great aged bourbon in the future. The moonshine I tasted was a bit floral and sweet but not as harsh as some moonshine I've had. It reminded me of Irish moonshine my Irish friend shared with me that was very drinkable. They have been aging whiskey in mini-barrels which I also tasted and only after a few months it had picked up a nice oak nose. read more

My Mom and I went right when they we're opening for the day. They let us do a tasting, even though we were early. We really enjoyed learning about the different kinds of alcohol. A little challenging to locate the first time, but worth the effort. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They will explain the differences between the different spirits including how they are made and what goes into each. Be sure to take a tour of the distilling operation. It only take a few minutes and you will learn a lot. Do a tasting flight, then have a cocktail. I highly recommend the new Argenta Gin. It makes a spectacular gin & tonic. I keep a bottle in the freezer next to a bottle of their Reno Rodeo Vodka, perfect for icy shots. The Blackrock Rum is an excellent choice for when you need to change your attitude and can't take the time to change your latitude. Be sure to pick up a bottle of their Bloody Mary mix. Not only does it make a great drink, but it is an amazing marinade for BBQed chicken and shrimp. Let your culinary imagination run wild with this stuff. You might as well save yourself a trip and get two bottles. For a very special gift, for yourself or a friend, buy one of the small 5 liter oak casks they sell and have them fill it with Recession Proof Moonshine. Depending on where you live, in 6 months to a few years, it will blow your mind! You can then use it for keeping some pre-made Manhattans on hand. Will you find cheaper big name brand prices at the Big Box Chain Discount Liquor Store? Almost certainly. Will the quality be the same? Almost certainly not! Seven Troughs is a CRAFT distillery. They take their time and make quality products, from quality ingredients insuring that they have unique flavors. The prices are more than fair for the quality of the product. Walked in for an event the place was hosting. Had left Virginia City early to arrive before the 7 Troughs event finished. 3 girls behind the bar helping helping a group of 7. Not sure why 3 people are needed to help tasting for one group but that's fine. Our group of three stood for 5-10 minutes trying to be busy. Made eye contact several times but could even get a "hello". I was frustrated so we walked out. This was the 3rd time we have been here and other two times were on so we decided to head back in after the group of 7 were wrapped up. Now 2 girls behind the counter. Again no greeting or anything. Waited a few minutes and just decided, forget it. Terrible,terrible service. Strange when a customer comes in and isn't allowed to spend any money. We were going to buy another bottle of the Blackrock Rum as they were out the last time we were in. Not sure what changed or what went wrong since last time. I'll make this a 2 star review as the first time we went we had a great tour and the distiller was very friendly and welcoming. read more
