I'm glad this was one of the wineries we made a reservation with. It's very small, 7.7 acres, and pretty much a one man show. He only takes 4 people at a time for tastings. The love he has for what he does was apparent. There were 4 reds for us to try and each was pretty unique. I had one shipped home that I can't wait to have with a steak. Made an appointment at Fricks winery for today. It was totally amazing. The owner explained all about his winery and how he makes his wine and the differences between the offerings that he presented. The wines for today were red and the grapes he is growing in part of his field came from France. Friendly, knowledgeable and has been in business for 45 years. We purchased a lot of wines and other gifts for family and friends. We will be back and my understanding is that his winery is unique as he grows grapes from France and Italy. We wanted to try a new winery on this recent trip to Santa Rosa. The owner Bill seemed knowledgeable and we appreciated the laid back wine tasting experience. The premises is lovely and tasting looks out the beautiful vineyard slopes. First week of September was a great time to visit since they are still waiting for a few weeks to harvest this year so the vines are lush with grapes, ready to be picked. The tasting itself however was a bit disappointing, the pours were insubstantial and not quite enough to taste all the notes and we weren't fans of the Rhone varieties that he specializes in. read more

I wanted to try a new winery and this one came up on my google search and my BF and I were happy that we visited! This place is only open on the weekend and we came around when it opened on a Sunday. We were greeted by Bill who is the owner and we were told to pick out 6 wines to taste. What my BF and I found that we really like are the different varietals that he makes. I ended up taking the Grenache Blanc, which is a very nice white which tasted perfect for a summer's day. I also liked the Rose that I tried but I didn't buy it. Maybe next time! My BF ended up with the Cinsaut and the Cotes de Frick blanc. The tasting room itself is small and any large groups over 6 should call in advance. All the wines cost $29 which I found pretty reasonable. If you end up buying more (6 or 12+) each wine cost a little less. One memorable part of my experience was when the song "Surrey With The Fringe" from the musical "Oklahoma" came on and Bill and I bonded over that. If anyone is in the Dry Creek Valley I recommend coming to this small winery! You won't be disappointed with the wines that you taste. Favorite stop on our wine tour. Bill is a remarkable man who has built his winery over 40+ years alone. Well... along with Lucy (the friendly winery dog who sadly passed away) and his late wife Judith. He even had wines named after them too. I really appreciate that he focuses on quality over quantity, and you can tell that Bill is completely dedicated to the art and science of wine for his entire life. He is truly passionate about his work (which he calls his vacation) and his story is so heartwarming - he sold everything he had to open his winery, and he is now living his dream. He poured us 6 tastings and shared tons of stories with us. I ended up really loving the Syrah, and got the bottle. Those star crackers though. OMG I'm ordering 10 boxes online. He also told us that they represent us - his guests are his stars. Bill's music taste is diverse - from classical, to jazz, to who knows what he is in the mood for. Really eclectic and shows you that he is a whole person. Unlike the other wineries where there is an annual fee to join the wine club, Frick is free! This homespun, one-man winery specializing in nail-bitingly good Rhone varietals is well worth your time and effort. Wine is subjective, but for us the reds here are bright and delicious, especially the C2 (a Rhone blend of cinsaut and carignan) and C3 (a blend of cinsault, carignane, and counoise) label wines and their tasty Dry Creek Syrah. Finding the winery and cozy, earnest tasting room is a bit of a maze that eventually will take you down a dirt toad and into a beautiful part of North Sonoma County that feels a world away. In the small white cabin that serves as a tasting room, you'll likely find the wine maker, Bill Frick, pouring and talking about his wines in his own mellow, introverted style. After reading so many wonderful reviews, I made Frick our first Sonoma stop. The wine is lovely and the premises are quaint and peaceful, however Bill was unfortunately not at all engaging during the tasting. I appreciate what Bill, who seems kind, is doing here and am happy to recommend the wine, but the 20 minute tasting experience I cannot recommend as extracting information was like pulling teeth (my sister and I were the only 2 guests), which was not at all expected after hearing that you can spend hours of learning here in both the other reviews and website and I was hoping specifically to learn as much as I could here. Not that anything that was promised was not delivered, but it was easily the shortest and least informative of my wine experiences and I think its worth knowing that before making the trek. In my opinion, there are but a few things that ensure a happy life: 1) surrounding yourself with people with whom you have mutual love and respect, and 2) having one or more passions that you can share with the world. Even better if you can make a living out of your passion with those you love! When you are in the presence of such fortunate people, their energy and positivity is infectious and shines through in your interactions. Such was the experience at Frick Winery, where we were greeted warmly by Bill Frick himself and his wife. From the tasting literature which includes a personal narrative about how Bill began his love of winemaking at the age of 8, to the ease with which he converses about the wine itself with customers (both beginning and expert oenophiles), it is evident that Bill Frick loves what he does and loves sharing it with others. Tucked away near the end of Walling Road in the Dry Creek Valley, amidst gorgeous rolling hills, Frick Winery provides the kind of hospitable, rustic charm that makes smaller, family-owned wineries so great. I've really been on a roll lately and have come across some fabulous new (to me) wineries. Frick is on that list. Bill Frick was pouring the wines. He was really friendly but definitely not overly talkative. I was very happy to see his dogs there - they were super cute. There is also a really cool painting of one of them - Lucia on the wall behind the tasting bar. With her cute little tongue sipping some red wine. Awwww! The wine was awesome by the way. Mostly red but the one white he poured - a Viognier I believe, was really good and buttery. The reds were delicious and I had a hard time picking just one. I noticed on the tasting notes for each wine that there were simply an extraordinary amount of food pairing suggestions which was neat. Not only that but each one had a vegetarian dish!! I can't even tell you how rare that is. It was such a delight to see and he told me that it was intentional. I really appreciated that. The Frick tasting room is a tiny, quaint, charming and homespun affair - a tiny house/outbuilding with a bar and wooden floor - the walls covered in painted portraits of the cute dogs who follow you in from the gravel parking area and flop down between your ankles. The wine that really stood out to me was the Cinsault - I did get the feeling that the owner was a bit more of an introvert and while he was accommodating, he wasn't as outgoing or informative, rolling with the queries of the group, as other winery hosts had been that day. We decided to come here specifically based on Yelp reviews. I guess it was bound to happen at some point, but Yelpers have let me down this time! While I found the place to be charming, unpretentious, and certainly not crowded, I found Mr Frick to be quietly accomodating, at best. Maybe he was having a tough day, but I tried several times to ask questions and engage him in conversation, but he kept giving me one or two word answers and then just staring at me. I randomly wanted into Frick, mostly because of the amusing sounding name, but ended up being quite thankful I did. This small vineyard and winery serves unique wines that you can't get anywhere else. Their production is small, so they have no retail distribution. Owner Bill Frick is extremely friendly, the tasting room is charming and quaint, and the wines are great. They use grapes for reds, such as the Counoise, that are rarely used in California. Bill is the pourer himself and I enjoyed his very specific personal recommendations for food pairings for each of his wines. The whole experience was very intimate and authentic. Small unpretentious winery that Mark C and I were lucky enough to both locate and be open while driving around the Geyserville area on a Saturday afternoon. A small production winery - the wines produced by Mr. Frick are really, really good. Not sure what I liked more - the wines or the personal attention that we got from the owner himself! Soft spoken but attentive we lingered a bit longer over our tasting to hear him treat each person as if they were the only one in the room. We were introduced to Frick wines a few years ago at a local Geyserville restaurant (Diavola, another 5-star spot, pouring local wines with excellent Italian food, especially the pizzas) and had the chance to visit the winery on our latest stay a few weeks ago. The winery owner/pourer/host/porter, Bill Frick, is a true artisan, producing unusual Rhone varietals that are a perfect fit for the NorCal climate and cuisine. Outstanding price point, too--mid-to-high-$20s for bottles worth far more. We walked out with 4 cases--Counoise, a lovely red that we remembered from our introduction to Frick wines a few years back, plus the Cinsaut and Mourvedre reds, and a Viognier white--all a special treat for my wife's 60th birthday. We've savored each of them in the subsequent weeks and plan to make Frick a go-to winery from now on. It's a small tasting room, but if you call in advance and manage to show up without a crowd, you'll have an especially wonderful tasting experience. We were in a hurry to buy wine for my wife's birthday party the same evening, but we were the only ones there, and Bill was quite nice about our need for speed--it was a tasting "lightning round!" You are greeted in the parking lot by a large, sheared sheepdog named Lucia. Sedate and friendly, she is a perfect introduction to this small winery in Dry Creek. The winery itself looks like a small cottage (white walls, red roof) perched on the edge of farmland. Inside is the hallmark of small family winemaking --- the owner/winemaker is also the one pouring you your taste. Frick makes several single-varietal wines, almost all from Dry Creek grapes. One of the highlights of the visit was trying two vintages of Carignane. Same vineyard, same winemaker --- two totally different wines! All the wines are worth trying (and taking home). Frick defines what I like about tasting in Dry Creek --- family-owned wineries where the people pouring the wines are often the ones who make it. It's a bit more intense when the person who conceived of the wine and nurtured its development is watching you enjoy the finished product. read more

One of my favorite wineries so far. Way off the beaten track, very unpretentious, staffed by the owner who is clearly loving what he does (I really enjoy seeing people enjoying what they do), and with some delicious wines. One of my favorites was the Grenache Blanc - truly an amazing sip - thoroughly enjoyable. Also loved the carignane. This was one of the wineries where I can say I didn't have 1 bad taste... all the wines were good! It just came down to which you liked better (such a dilemma to have) ... will be back, and order on-line when i can't be there. Am dying to try the voigner which was sold out... it is one of my favorite whites so would love to see what Bill does with it. Oh, and also loved the dog - demanded a lot of attention, but was adorable. My friends and I first found Frick winery perhaps a decade ago. It was one of those "Hey - there's one more winery up this road here - let's check it out" moments. We've all been so glad we did. From that moment forward, Bill Frick has been my favorite vintner, hands down -- and many have tried, but none could unseat him. These are not "California-style" wines. These are not fat oaky malolactic Chardonnays and gigantic fruity complex Zinfandels. These are wines in the style of those who, if they didn't invent wine, certainly turned wine making into an art: the French. Unfined Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Rosé of Cincault - these are not common varietals in California, but Bill Frick makes every one sing with subtlety and flavor that beautifully compliment a wide variety of foods. His reds - Cinsault, Carignane, Merlot -- are likewise fantastic, as are his several blends (one named for his dear sweet departed tasting-room sheep dog, Lucia). But Bill Frick's coup de grâce is his Syrah. Rhone-style, subtle, lingering, drawing you back for more. I'm currently sitting on a 7-vintage vertical of Frick Syrah just looking for the right moment (and gang of guests) to crack them open. These wines take my breath away. Every time I open a Frick Syrah it seems like I had forgotten just how good a wine could taste. Frick Winery is the northern-most winery in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley, so the scenery is beautiful too, and the small tasting room -- with its limited hours -- charming. This is a great little tasting room. Really, this is a wonderful visit for newbies and enophiles alike. Attentive, as it is the winemaker, Bill Frick, doing the pouring (not a chatty Kathy, but informative nonetheless and with his own personal touch). He focuses on rhone varietals, but goes well beyond the norm with rarely seen varietals like Counoise and Cinsaut. With extremely limited production, it's no surprise there is no distribution, so stock up! He has 5-7 year old Syrah's that are drinking marvelously and at a great price. We were there on November 1, 2014. A beautiful Autumn Day with the vineyards in full colors and on a winding road ended up at this hole in the wall charming winery. Would have never thought to even go here except my brother and Bill Frick worked together about 35 years ago in a different industry. After tasting overpriced Napa and Sonoma wineries! Sorry but $35.00 bucks for any Sauvignon Blanc is just crazy. And tasting Chardonnay that starts at $50.00 a bottle is stupid. I can just see the little old winemaker from 20 years ago laughing up his sleeve saying to himself, "I can't believe that I am selling the same quality wines that I made in the mid 80's for $40.00 more a bottle. And then there is Frick Winery. Frick wines aren't perfect, but they are very good and then some are stellar. I remember that his highest priced wine was $27.50 a bottle. And he gives a discount on a case. His Rhone Red blend called C3 was tremendous. The Grenache Blanc was wonderful Rose'. Treat your palate to the wonderful flavor of Rhone wines. If you want a wine experience unlike any other, do what we were lucky enough to do. Ask Bill Frick if he is willing to do a private tasting. If he has time, he might walk his property with you and show you his operation. He explained to us how you graft a varietal to root stock, which was fascinating. Oh yeah...the wine. No zin here, the rest of the Dry Creek wineries have this covered. Bill does Rhone varietals, all interesting and unique in Sonoma. We enjoyed everything we tasted, in part because of the food suggestions that accompanied each wine were so spot on. Came here upon the suggestion of other yelpers- you would have to be VERY lost to happen upon it. Does look like a meth lab from the outside, but has some very tasty wines inside! We were greeted by Lucia upon getting out of our car (Madison must have been taking the day off). The walls of the winery were decorated with paintings of the two puppies, which gave a nice feeling to it. The owner clearly loves what he does (he told us that he wanted to have a winery by age 8!), and the wines definitely show it. The wine selection was very usual, with many grapes that we'd never heard of. The owner had done his research; he planted little-known grapes because "that's what grows best in this soil". read more

Frick Winery is awesome. I've probably been here about a half dozen times (if not more) since I first discovered this place (up a dirt road past the better known/marked Pedroncelli Winery) about 8 years ago or so, and every time that I've been here, Bill has poured the wine for my guests and me. Pretty much the only thing that's changed is that Bill has a few new varietals now that he didn't before (e.g. Cinsault, the excellent C2 "c-squared" blend, and a carignange). Bill still pours one of my favorite Syrahs consistently from year to year, and he blends an awesome, earthy Merlot that'll knock your socks off, even if you think that you don't like Merlot. His Viognier is also excellent, but it seems like most of the time, it sells out before I get a chance to taste/buy/drink it. The tasting room is about as unpretentious and informative as you can get. It's definitely worth a trip a bit out of your way to stop by and enjoy Frick. read more

Every year at the Passport to Dry Creek, Frick rises to the top out of the 50 or so wineries that participate. Bill always has an amazing spread of food matched perfectly with his interesting wines. No need to talk in wine terms here as this is about as low key and unpretentious as it gets in CA. If you like it he is happy and no need to speak much as to why. On more than one occasion his Counoise has bowled me over. I just love his wines and his Carignane and C2 are also some of my favs. As Bill lists in his materials he is everything from wine maker to floor sweeper and it shows in the love and passion he has for his craft. I always feel comfortable here regardless of how my bank account is doing and never leave without a few cases of remarkable wine. read more

I meant to write the review about a month ago, but my sentiment still holds true today. After finding this winery on Yelp, we had a whole day mapped out to go to a few different wineries--our first stop being Frick. It was such a great experience that we ended up doing a totally different trip. Bill was so lovely and gave us some of his recommendations for some local wineries, and we ended up going to places we would have never thought to go. Not to mention the wines--the wine was great! This winery is a little different from most in the area since it doesn't concentrate on zins, you have a chance to sample some lesser known varietals in the area, which were a nice surprise and a welcome change of pace. I had not tried Cinsault or Carignane prior to coming here, but I was happy to have tried them. I also loved their blends. I ended up picking up a bottle of the C3 (C Cubed) which i have on my shelf awaiting someone's Holiday stocking. We didn't get to have Bill pour for us, but I took home a case of C2 last time I was there and it may have been the best decision of my short but fabulous life. The setting and atmosphere are bar none the "Napa" experience without any of the drawbacks (attitude, snootery, etc.). Definitely a "one man operation," without venturing into "crazy old guy in the woods brewing moonshine and avoiding human contact" territory. You must visit this hidden gem if you're going to be the hero of the afternoon when brining out-of-town guests. read more

Visiting Frick winery was like visiting a small corner bookshop with a character or like dining in an authentic cozy Italian place in dim light. This place has its own personality and that differentiates Frick from other wineries that make thousands of cases. This is a shop run by Bill Frick and he is the Wine Maker and he is the Wine Pourer. You can taste some Varietals which we rarely see in California Wine Regions like Cinsuat, Counoise and Carignane which are more prominent in South of France. Really liked their Grenache and C3. Bill is a very friendly guy who takes time to entertain people with his stories. The downside I see in this place is it can get crowded and you may have to wait for a while for next pour. May be Bill has to hire someone for peak days which could improve this. read more

Our group of four voted this winery the overall favorite of our trip by a landslide. We so enjoyed our time with Bill Frick, the owner, who is humble and kind. You can see how much he loves his career by speaking with him, and it was an absolute pleasure to have him chat with us over the tastings, which we shared. We truly enjoyed each wine we tried, and wished we had purchased more when we returned home. The wine is not sold commercially, but is available for purchase at the winery and online. The tasting is either comped with purchase of a bottle or complimentary; I don't remember, as there was no way I was leaving without making a purchase! This is the only winery of our trip which is a "must-do" for the next trip. I believe they are only open for tastings on the weekends (and Friday - Sunday in the summer), so be sure to plan ahead if you want to visit. read more

My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Frick winery while on a tour of Sonoma with Wine Country Journeys (also highly recommended). We loved the time we were able to spend with Bill! His Rhone varietals were absolutely delicious. You have to try the Cinsaut (sin-soh) and the different blends he makes, i.e. C3. What really made the visit memorable was Bill.
