    Fun tasting at Frick!

    I wanted to try a new winery and this one came up on my google search and my BF and I were happy that we visited! This place is only open on the weekend and we came around when it opened on a Sunday. We were greeted by Bill who is the owner and we were told to pick out 6 wines to taste. What my BF and I found that we really like are the different varietals that he makes. I ended up taking the Grenache Blanc, which is a very nice white which tasted perfect for a summer's day. I also liked the Rose that I tried but I didn't buy it. Maybe next time! My BF ended up with the Cinsaut and the Cotes de Frick blanc. The tasting room itself is small and any large groups over 6 should call in advance. All the wines cost $29 which I found pretty reasonable. If you end up buying more (6 or 12+) each wine cost a little less. One memorable part of my experience was when the song "Surrey With The Fringe" from the musical "Oklahoma" came on and Bill and I bonded over that. If anyone is in the Dry Creek Valley I recommend coming to this small winery! You won't be disappointed with the wines that you taste. When we were leaving Bill thanked my BF and I for buying his wine which was a nice ending to our visit.

    Favorite stop on our wine tour. Bill is a remarkable man who has built his winery over 40+ years alone. Well... along with Lucy (the friendly winery dog who sadly passed away) and his late wife Judith. He even had wines named after them too. I really appreciate that he focuses on quality over quantity, and you can tell that Bill is completely dedicated to the art and science of wine for his entire life. He is truly passionate about his work (which he calls his vacation) and his story is so heartwarming - he sold everything he had to open his winery, and he is now living his dream. He poured us 6 tastings and shared tons of stories with us. I ended up really loving the Syrah, and got the bottle. Those star crackers though. OMG I'm ordering 10 boxes online. He also told us that they represent us - his guests are his stars. Bill's music taste is diverse - from classical, to jazz, to who knows what he is in the mood for. Really eclectic and shows you that he is a whole person. Unlike the other wineries where there is an annual fee to join the wine club, Frick is free! I look forward to staying updated with Frick winery and consuming a lot more wine soon :)

    Love this winery and the wine. Bill Frick is so nice, knowledgeable and accommodating. Offer a free tasting and it's kid friendly. The prices are reasonable, especially for how good it is. My favorites are the cinsault rose, viognier and Lucia red. It's a little out of the way, but worth it.

    In my opinion, there are but a few things that ensure a happy life: 1) surrounding yourself with people with whom you have mutual love and respect, and 2) having one or more passions that you can share with the world. Even better if you can make a living out of your passion with those you love! When you are in the presence of such fortunate people, their energy and positivity is infectious and shines through in your interactions. Such was the experience at Frick Winery, where we were greeted warmly by Bill Frick himself and his wife. From the tasting literature which includes a personal narrative about how Bill began his love of winemaking at the age of 8, to the ease with which he converses about the wine itself with customers (both beginning and expert oenophiles), it is evident that Bill Frick loves what he does and loves sharing it with others. Tucked away near the end of Walling Road in the Dry Creek Valley, amidst gorgeous rolling hills, Frick Winery provides the kind of hospitable, rustic charm that makes smaller, family-owned wineries so great. The lack of pretense belies the many accolades that this winery has received! I'm not going to pretend like I know wine, but I liked what I tasted and walked away with some Viognier and Merlot. If you are roaming the surrounding wine country, I highly suggest checking out Frick and partaking in the labors of this family's love! p.s.     I've really been on a roll lately and have come across some fabulous new (to me) wineries. Frick is on that list. Bill Frick was pouring the wines. He was really friendly but definitely not overly talkative. I was very happy to see his dogs there - they were super cute. There is also a really cool painting of one of them - Lucia on the wall behind the tasting bar. With her cute little tongue sipping some red wine. Awwww! The wine was awesome by the way. Mostly red but the one white he poured - a Viognier I believe, was really good and buttery. The reds were delicious and I had a hard time picking just one. I noticed on the tasting notes for each wine that there were simply an extraordinary amount of food pairing suggestions which was neat. Not only that but each one had a vegetarian dish!! I can't even tell you how rare that is. It was such a delight to see and he told me that it was intentional. I really appreciated that. To sum up: Small, intimate, the wine maker pours the delicious wines, cute dogs. Awesome.

    This is a winery showcasing a man and 7.77 acres of delicious grapes. If you want to fall in love with wine, go here. If you already love wine, go here. This is not fancy, just fabulous wine and memories that will last a lifetime. You will buy a case because the Rhone style wines are that good and you will think of Bill every time you open a bottle because he is that passionate about what he does.

    We decided to come here specifically based on Yelp reviews. I guess it was bound to happen at some point, but Yelpers have let me down this time! While I found the place to be charming, unpretentious, and certainly not crowded, I found Mr Frick to be quietly accomodating, at best. Maybe he was having a tough day, but I tried several times to ask questions and engage him in conversation, but he kept giving me one or two word answers and then just staring at me. A bit off-putting, to say the least.... Anyway, the varietals grown here are definitely different from the norm, but not really our taste.

The restaurant is the building to the left as you enter as well as the museum. We ordered the 3 course menu with wine pairing for what I thought was a great price. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the wine pairings. The crab fritter with caviar: 3.5 stars. It was a fried potato ball with minimal crab. The caviar and accompanying sauce is what made the dish. The mushroom risotto: 3 stars. Perhaps it's because I don't care for risotto - too moist for rice. However the flavor was good, albeit a little salty. The mushroom were cooked for perfection and delicious, wish I had more. The salmon with broccolini:3 stars. cooked to order. I like mine well done due to preventions of parasites. But it was still moist. The accompanying sauce did not help flavor much but I guess I could have put more salt. I really enjoy the veggies in the dish. The broccolini was cooked the way I like and the rings of squash were tender and sweet. The hubby got the beef shoulder for his third course:5 stars. Tender and falls apart much like a pot roast. Flavorful as well. Apple tart and ice cream: 4 stars. I actually enjoyed the dish. Not too sweet. You can taste all the flavors and texture. Over all we had a great time with the wine, food was accompaniment. The museum was fun to stroll thru as well.

I also have to commend their service, my friends are not big wine drinkers and the person pouring for us was kind and patient, made sure to get my friends the right pours they would not like but Love. Really appreciate the patience and attention to detail. My only thing I would comment is we were considering renting a space for the pool, and it was a little too rich for us over $300 for 4 pool chairs was something to keep in mind if that is why you are visiting.

When I tell you that my friend and I were hooked from beginning to end during our tasting, I am not kidding you. Reece was absolutely phenomenal and so was our entire tasting experience at Zialena. After passing by Zialena several times on my trips to DeLorimier, my friend and I finally decided to check them out for a tasting. You know I have to start off with their estate and grounds. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I will always be a fan of classic winery setups, BUT... I LOVED the modernized look of Zialena! The exterior of their building alone is so eye catching and unique. And then you walk inside and think, damn this place is so chic and hip! I love the artwork, I love the stylish tables and chairs with the bright orange seat cushions, I love the youthful and fun atmosphere and vibe. It's just wonderful. Those views! I underestimated how great they'd be because you can't see much from the outside. But once you're sitting on their patio, the views seem to be endless. Countless views of the hills and their beautiful vineyards. It helped that it was a stunning day outside too. Reece set us up on their side patio which was glorious. Now about this wine; fan-freakin-tastic! I loved every single wine that I tried. All were scrumptious. I'll get more into the wines in a bit, but first I'm gonna tell you a little bit about what I learned from Reece. Although the actual tasting room is newish, the winery is a fourth generation run operation by the Mazzoni family. The family hails from Italy and they've been harvesting grapes and producing wine for years. The winery is actually named after their Great Aunt Lena (Zia Lena in Italian). Mark and Lisa (sister and brother) are the owners and they also run the winery. Zialena grows grapes for over 90 different varietals and all of them are estate grown! That's right; those vineyards that surround their property are actually their own. They use whole cluster fermentation to produce their wines which basically means that they ferment the grapes with the stems (the stems aren't removed). This allows for more of an elaborate flavor profile in their wines. They also ferment in concrete with the top open. Never really heard of open top fermentation prior to coming here, but it allows for more oxygen to come in contact which helps with faster yeast production amongst other things. Alright, let me take my geeky wine brain hat off for a second. Reece had us completely engaged during this tasting. I literally started taking notes because it was so much interesting information. But those wines, dear GEEZUS! So, so good. Their unique fermentation techniques really paid off because their wines are so rich and complex. We tasted one welcoming white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) and 4 reds which were all incredible. The Cappella Red Blend was to DIE for and undoubtedly my favorite wine of the bunch. The spices were so pronounced but yet the wine went down oh so smooth. Took a bottle of that and I don't think it even lasted a few days. Reece was so knowledgeable and confident. This man probably could have sold us the earth and we would have bought it. Seriously. So engaging and we loved it. But wow, I'm impressed. Zialena is a one of a kind.
