Walk in the footsteps of a legend! Raymond Burr and his partner purchased this 50 acres in the 70's replacing prune Orchards and planting Vermintino , Cab Franc. The owner Sherie is genuine and friendly and has done an amazing job of updating the place with an updated vibe. Our first stop for a birthday celebration on June 22. We were a bit tardy due to road construction but the team was accommodating and kind. Ok I'm not ashamed to admit that I know who Raymond Burr was. But I didn't know he had a small winery in the Dry Creek area north of Santa Rosa. I happen to mention to a friend that I was heading to that area and was looking for some ports. He recommended I check out Burr. Nothing fancy, several older farm buildings and houses sitting up at the top of the property. The tasting room is quite small and filled with many pieces of Burr's movie and TV career memorabilia. It was interesting to look through some of the stuff. The staff was very low key and friendly. Offered a free tasting of the Malbec and a cab franc, both were ok. But I was looking for their port and happily poured me a taste. It was ok, but made with French cognac and didn't have that deep warm caramel flavor from the Portuguese style that I love. This place is just awesome. Undoubtedly one of the most bizarre tasting rooms I've ever been in, it's going to be the one I remember the most from my day trip to Sonoma! Yes, folks, this is THE Raymond Burr you are thinking of. Mr. Perry Mason himself. The weird hybrid trailer park / tasting room area is decorated with peeling yellow faded T.V. Guide covers and several of Mr. Burr's acting awards. The ancient window a/c unit still manages to keep the unpretentious place cool. Don't miss the carpeted (yes, CARPETED) wheelchair ramp, all done up in mismatched gray and lilac carpet. There was also this table full of used books out front with a handwritten "FREE" sign. I laughed when my friend grabbed a couple of decorating books off the table, reminding her that the complimentary faded paperbacks were probably once the bathroom reading material of Mr. Burr. The tasting experience was also very "offbeat." The two friendly older gentlemen behind the bar were super friendly and welcoming, albeit a little strange. Not in a bad way, in a crazily endearing way. If you go, be sure to chat up Jacob and you will see what I mean. Welcome to the Twilight Zone, baby. The tasting area is on a hill so it affords lovely sweeping views of the vineyards below. The wines were all really tasty too, and while priced a little on the high side, I didn't think they were a terrible value. Best of all, the tastings are FREE. That's unheard of nowadays. This winery is scenic. When we arrived for our reservation, the first words we were greeted with were, "just so you know we normally don't allow kids." We have a 2.5 year old, but the place was completely empty. If that is a policy, it should be clearly stated on their website. We stayed for the tasting, but it was SO rushed. None of us were done with one taste before the next one came out. It was not relaxed and enjoyable because it felt so rushed. It also felt very tacky that when we were paying at the end, the pourer loudly proclaimed "don't forget to tip!!" Not worth the price--go elsewhere. read more

Visited Raymond Burr 9 years and my husband fell in love with the Cab Francs. Today we went back and found out new owners bought the winery 5 years ago and they've done great things visually! Besides being a huge Perry Mason and Raymond Burr fan, Mr Beneviedes has done a superb job honoring the late Mr. Burr by naming the vineyards after him that they bought together in 1986. A must see if you are a fan of Mr. Burr, and of course, their wines are superb! Ken was hosting the tasting room while my wife Sally and I visited, he was gracious and knowledgeable about the rich history that envelopes the vineyards. As a huge fan of Port wine, Ken poured me their latest version. He was very generous in their servings of all their Red selections, while he shared stories of the grapes they grow and how they are uniquely processed. I bought two bottles of their Port, one for drinking and one for a souvenir. They are priced fairly for the quality you receive. I highly recommend visiting this winery for many reasons, not only because of the name, but because they sell and reserve some of the finest wines I have ever tasted. read more

Very cool winery. What I really enjoyed most was the people. When we arrived we were the only people (probably the first of the day, now that I think about it), and we were greeted with lost of cheer and welcome. We sampled some good wines (I agree with others that this is a great place for Chardonnay lovers. Even I, who doesn't like many, enjoyed them.) and chatted a lot about the winery's history & Raymond Burr. The tasting room has great pictures (several albums, in fact) of the family, as well as the orchids they are also famous for. You will even find Raymond Burr's Oscars on the shelves (we got to touch one!!). On the outside you can enjoy some awesome picnic tables and a great view. I highly recommend asking for a tour of the greenhouse, where hundreds of orchids grow and bloom year around. It's amazing how much care these flowers need, and they pretty much one (awesome) guy takes care of them all. read more

The verdict is in: these wines will sentence you to some good times. Yikes, that was bad. What can I say, I went here because of the great Perry Mason, both the celebrity and the kitsch of it. What I experienced were some great wines, notably their Cab Franc. There is some nice outdoor seating, and the wine skews on the casual side. We were up for a barrel tasting, so we enjoyed some bbq sausages that paired quite well with the wines we tried. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way for Mr. Burr, but definitely worth a trip if you are in the area, at least to see his Emmy's on display! read more

Ahhhh yes, Perry Mason Vineyards! What this place lacks in decor it truly makes up for in charm, humbleness (is that a word?) and damn good Cab Franc. We discovered it this past Friday after taking a wrong turn and thinking that Raymond Burr was funny...you see, this is what happens after your fourth winery...and it definitely offered an interesting group of people. I can't say I was a fan of their whites, but I really liked both of their Cab Francs and I really liked that it felt like you were stopping by someones house. They even went so far as to have a crock pot of Swedish meatballs and freshly baked moist chocolate mini cakes to pair with the reds. Just made for a neat little extra touch. read more

Grumpy and mean is exactly the way to put it. I tasted here with a friend and right from the start we just weren't welcomed. I always take my ID out thinking its because I'm young. Yea...that wasn't it. He continued to get irritated every time I asked a question. Instead he talked to the other older man on a chair and ignored us. Obviously he thought we wouldn't buy and he achieved his own self fulfilling prophecy...we didn't buy. The wines weren't good, but I'm sure they would taste better with even a smile. My crew and I hit this place during our adventures to the Passport to Dry Creek; Perhaps the other wineries simply out performed this one but my personal experience is below. When you enter the winery there is some great landscape as you come up over the hill to view the winery. We had a mini-van transporting the crew and the guy guiding traffic was sending automobiles to the lower parking lot rather than allowing us to be dropped of, kinda lame but whatev we needed the exercise... or something. As we approached the winery the botanical representation was quite impressive, not really a "garden" but very well kept through out the entrance. In walking UP to the tasting area (which will get your blood moving) I greeted the guy at the entrance and was making small talk since I had a happy buzz going, he quickly asked if I had a Passport wrist band and seemed to immediately try and find a reason why I shouldn't be there (At least this is how I felt by his inquisition). I stated that I did not because I don't like to sleep with stuff on... fair enough right! No, he basically said they will not serve tastings because I dont have one... I looked at him like... really? So... what if I have the pasport booklet? He said "You need a wristband to taste!" Uh, ok, so what I am hearing you say is we don't want you to buy wine from us... Did I say that, no! Did I think that, uh yeah you can say that... I basically turned and walked away from him while my group began talking to this "guy". I decided to go to the tasting anyways since I was legit, After a few tastings I noticed the staff must have been tired and the heat must have invited the flies. Not too sure what happened here but the team promptly decided something with this place was not right... so we vacated premesis! For my 30th Bday, my bf and my friends decided to do some wine tasting in the area, and this was one of the places on our list. When our limo driver pulled up, the guy TURNED US AWAY!! I am not giving the actual place one star (since we DIDN'T get to go in for tasting), but I am giving a bad review for the guy who turned us away. He was straight out Rude, yeah, we get it, it's 4 freaking 40 and you close at 5 pm, but don't be rude about it! After he told us we couldn't go in, the limo driver and my group tried to come up with a plan B, and the rude dude came back out again to tell us to go away....Really??? Sucks because we read some good reviews about this place and really wanted to check it out. OH well. There are plenty of other places to go. so over it. read more

The tasting room was big, but the grounds are somewhat ordinary. So, come here for the wine not for the view & experience (of the tasting room as it's fairly modest). We learned about Raymond from our friends who took us here. One of them grew up in Sonoma and loves their wine because it's really good wine for the money. Out of the wines we tasted, I thought the Cabernets stood out and were reasonably priced. They also sold me on their Port. Of course, the dark chocolate pairing with the port always helps! We ended up with a bottle of their Cabernet and a bottle of port. read more

I wandered into the winery a year ago with a group of friends on a wine tasting trip. Our guide and keeper suggested this was a grand place for a picnic, and didn't say anything one way or the other about the wine. It was raining cats and dogs, so no picnic, but we looked at Mr. Burr's Emmys, listened to the talk about the winery, and tasted the wine. It seemed quite good, actually, especially the port, so we got a bottle and tucked it away. In a long day of tasting, tipsy towards the end, it was just a small episode. THEN, months later, we opened the bottle of port. Ambrosia! Drink of the gods! WHEN, Where do we get MORE??????? So today we schlepped back up into the Dry Creek area and got some more of that delicious port. It has a bit of a sad and interesting story: Raymond Burr imported the vines from Portugal for a private stock of port, not with commercial intent, but he did not live to taste the finished product. That is an awful shame. So, if you take my advice and check this place out, raise a glass to "Ironside" and be grateful that he laid the groundwork for this glorious drink. read more

I'm not sure My Burr would be very happy about the state his winery is in. Unfortunately, it appears the current owner (Burr's longtime domestic partner) is using Burr's name to lure in tourists. We came by here on a recommendation regarding the Burr memorabilia on display here... but I wouldn't exactly say it's a museum or anything, mostly some awards and pictures. I was expecting maybe a jacket he wore, or a cane he used in whatever movie, maybe a hat... You know, something interesting, maybe even cool...Oh well, I guess all those cool items are owned by the Hollywood studios. The wines are not very good, and are grossly overpriced compared to the taste and quality. And then, there's Grumpy Gus pouring the wine. He was friendly enough I guess, until I asked about the history of the winery. Most winery personnel are pleased you have an interest in their property, etc, but Grumpy looked at me like I had asked "Who the hell is Raymond Burr??" Then he promptly pointed at a sheet of paper with the history written out on it and said "Read that", which I promptly ignored and then tried to get my wife out of the place as fast as possible. Leave the drama of marble and fountains in Napa and enjoy a simple flight and a beautiful view from this place's welcoming picnic benches. The cab franc was our unanimous favorite and a precious bottle of it came home with us. A straightforward, sturdy, uncomplicated cab. The guys at Raymond Burr can be a little gruff at first, but they're knowledgeable and warm when you stay and chat a bit. In fact, they even took the initiative to send us a new bottle when ours became victim to the 107 degree weather of Alexander Valley! It was our fault for not taking better care of our bottle, but they took responsibility for it - for that kind of above-and-beyond service, we are both appreciative and impressed! read more

Where the outside has an eccentric but attractive garden and great views of the valley? Where the winery's namesake, Raymond Burr, was a popular actor in the sixties with an early courtroom drama and his Perry Mason and TV Guide photos decorate the walls? Where the biography of the winery's first owner rivals the story of the Mondavis? Was Raymond Burr in the navy? Did he really own a Fiji Island? I've been to Raymond burr twice now. The first time I was looking for a place that was close to our wedding location that I could take my friends and family. The second was on our bus tour the day before my wedding. Perhaps I am biased, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Raymond Burr. The first thing I always notice driving on is the solar panels, which always makes me smile. There is no reason that each and every winery doesn't implement this technology. The second thing I notice are the green houses along the left side of the road. Inside are some of the most beautiful orchids. As it turns out, this was a hobby of both the owners of the vineyard, including the late Raymond Burr. As I'm from television, I live vicariously through what Benevides has accomplished here in Dry Creek. It is my dream to build exactly what he has built here. Ultimately, its beautiful wine. I love their Cab Franc and their Cab Sav. Francisco always makes it a wonderful experience when we taste, even though I tasted with another wonderful woman the last time (I apologize for not remembering your name, it was a whirlwind weekend). So the poor reviews talk about a tie-dye wearing family and the tiny tasting room...is that what you use to review a wine? Yes, the tasting room is tiny. Yes, people still wear tie-dye. What the tasting room lacks in size it more than makes up for with its beautiful large deck overlooking their gorgeous property. I've never had a "grumpy" pourer as Kim M says - I've only had pourers who are more than generous, extremely informative, and down right good people. The reason you haven't heard of this wine till recently is because Raymond Burr didn't want his name to be the only thing that carried the wine so the wines were not made available to the general tie-dye wearing public till after his death. Oh, and those wines are great. The port is a must try here as it is made with real porto grapes. Raymond Burr Vineyards gets 4.3 stars in my book and "Kim M." gets -2.5 stars for the most uninformed review of a vineyard ever. Yay Raymond Burr. Boooooooo Kim M. read more

The views of the vineyards and valley below are beautiful. It was so nice to sit in seating that was comfortable and intimate.... while we enjoyed some of the best wines...it was heavenly. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, the tasting room was like a walk through a piece of my childhood. There's a large collection of Raymond Burr memorabilia..which includes 2 Emmy's. It was refreshing to go to a winery that was an experience and not just a stop. A friend of mine likes to say that Napa is for auto parts and Sonoma is for wine. Raymond Burr Vineyards happened to be open the weekend of July 4th this year and we absolutely had to visit once we found out they were open. Their website says that you have to call for an appointment to visit, so call ahead to check before heading out to the winery. The winery was started by Raymond Burr the award winning actor who portrayed Perry Mason and Ironside. The winery has a display area where you can see various memorabilia including two of his Emmys, pictures of the actor other pieces of interest. Better yet the winery is not a one trick pony that is a memory factory rather than a real winery. The wines were solidly good and enjoyable. Our favorite was the 2000 Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It had a huge fruity start, an inky full body and cherry on the palate. The second favorites were a tie between the 2003 Dry Creek Valley Chardonnay and the 2004 Sonoma County Chardonnay. The tasting room staff were wonderfully friendly and made us feel very much at home. They were knowledgeable both about the wines and winery and Raymond Burr. read more
