    Mushing through the Goldstream Valley
    Johnny G.

It's amazing how much wild country is just off Fairbanks' front porch! Running the trails and frozen ponds of the Goldstream Valley with Thom's dogs was awesome. They are friendly, happy, and full of energy. Neon gives the best hugs and Mattie has bed springs for legs. Hilarious crew.

What an outstanding experience! Normally with dog sledding tours you just sit and relax while someone else mushes... not with Thom and his team! We were able to drive our own sleds!! He took the time to properly train us on how to work with the dogs and have an enjoyable experience on the trails. I'm so thankful for Thom and allowing my family and I to have the trip of a lifetime. Go with Friendly Arctic Adventures you won't regret it!

We chose Black Spruce based on the Yelp, Google, and Trip Advisor reviews. It did not disappoint…read more The scenic day time winter tour was the highlight of my Fairbanks trip! We had an appointment for 2pm-3:30pm. In reality we were a couple minutes late and after photo ops/changing it was closer to 2-4pm. Allow yourself closer to 45-60 minutes driving from Fairbanks in winter when it's slippery and icy roads. As of February 2025 the Google GPS was accurate although I would recommend screenshotting instructions just in case. Going back home I had trouble finding a signal until a little further down. I really appreciate they had extra gear! I didn't find snow pants at Walmart. But they had snow bibs, parkas, snow boots, gloves etc. There was another small group of 4 at our time slot. But each tour is 2 people. One person gets to sit and the other can stand up to "drive" in the back. We started off with a short oral history of Alaskan huskies and dog sledding in Alaska. Then we had 10-15 minutes to play with the dogs. Most of them were very friendly. If you gently call their name they'll come out of their house for pets. Some were a little shy (pandemic pups or naturally reserved). Then we were shown a demonstration on how to stand on the sled and use the drag mat and the brake. Next was a demo on how to harness the dogs. Our tour guide was Jesse! He was awesome. I really enjoyed talking to him. He was very patient answering my questions about his dogs. After we personally harnessed one dog each Jesse took care of the rest and chose the order of the sled hook up. We stopped about 2-3 times for photo ops. During the first stop (about the halfway point) you get the option of switching from the sitting sled to the standing driving sled. Not very strenuous. But lots of fun! Highly recommend the snow pants in winter. I took a two steps off the path and ended up calf deep in snow. The dogs start barking and getting a little impatient when you stop too long. They really are well taken care of and love to run! Jesse unharnessed the dogs at the end of the tour. We were able to go into the cabin to take off gear. There's also merchandise, hot cocoa, and please tip your tour guides. They even include Venmo QR codes which is perfect for our increasingly cashless society. Highly recommend Black Spruce for dog sledding in the Fairbanks area!

You can tell how much they love their dogs, and how much their dogs love them. It felt like a truly authentic local experience instead of a mass-produced tourist trap. The landscape we sledded through was all gorgeous permafrost, boreal forest, and frozen river - it was magical. It was amazing to be able to stand on the sled runners in the back, in addition to just sitting in the sled. We also spent some time in the kennel yard playing and taking photos of all the beautiful dogs, who all had such distinct personalities! Would highly recommend this experience to anyone traveling to Fairbanks -- totally worth it.

We could not forget the amazing moments of viewing the aurora light in their heated tent, Husky dog sledding tour, ice fishing, wood carving, snow shoeing and more... And you get an opportunity to learn how the couple built their big log cabin with their own hands without any heavy equipment! The meals they prepared for us are just out of the world, from home made icecream, berries and the fish they caught. We came from San Francisco with no snow year round, and we were doing very well and enjoyed every moment spent here at their homestead. I highly recommend them, and can say wholeheartedly that their host made our Alaska trip PERFECT, and it is such a fond memory for years to come. Thank you Jenna and David! We hope that we can come back some day...

The service was wonderful. We booked the 30-minute (2-mile) sled ride, and wow, you can tell these dogs truly enjoy what they do! Check-in was a breeze; they gave us clear safety instructions and explained the history behind the kennel. They even lent us heavy-duty gloves for the cold. Our musher was fantastic, sharing curious anecdotes about the dogs throughout the ride. We stopped at the 1-mile mark for some stunning photos, and at the end, we got to pet and cuddle the dogs, it was amazing! To top it off, they welcomed us back with hot coffee and freshly baked cookies. I felt so well taken care of by the staff. Highly recommended!
