On a Wednesday afternoon, checking in at the desk for the Dog Sledding tour was a quick process. Afterwards, a kind female employee recommended that my group wear the winter gear that they provide. So, we borrowed jackets, overalls, gloves, gaiters, and boots. She was also efficient as she handed the snow clothing to my group of 5. At first, I planned to use my own jacket and gloves, but I decided to place them in containers that are under the benches. I did wear my own beanie though. During the tour, our guide was very friendly as she made small talk with us. She was also kind to the dogs while she helped them navigate the snowy trail. I wish I remembered her name, but she was there on New Year's Eve. I sat closer to the front of the sled which was bumpy and some turns were sharp. So be sure to hold on tight to your belongings because the dogs will not stop until the middle of the 30-minute tour. During the mini break, the dogs were calm and friendly when I pet a few of them. I also appreciate the photos that the female and male tour guides took of my family and I. After returning to the building, we had to discard the used winter clothing into bins. My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Rod's. We didn't have transportation and there wasn't a scheduled pickup available at the time we needed, but Rod arranged it. Their driver, Christian picked us up on time from our hotel in Fairbanks in a nice new van. Her was very polite and fun to talk with on the way up and back. I was really impressed with how clean and nice the facility was. When we arrived, the ladies at the front checked our gear to be sure we'd be warm enough. They have everything you could need to suit up for an excursion. They were short on snow the weekend we went so we used the side by side instead of the sled, but we still had a great time. Our musher, Jimmy Lebling was an excellent guide and he made for such a great experience! I learned a lot more than I expected to about the dogs and racing. Jimmy's dogs were very friendly! Dog sledding was so much fun! My only gripe was that we only booked for half an hour. You'll need to provide your own transportation or book a taxi/shuttle to get there, but they provide additional warm clothing if needed. Recommended taxi/shuttle services listed on their website. They request you get their thirty minutes prior to start time to get adequately dressed and to allow for the check in process. We got there with plenty of time. They handed us a buzzer and then when it was our turn, our guide Joe lead us to the dogs and off we went! In between our sled ride, we took a break to meet the dogs, pet them, and ask our guide questions. I'm not a dog person but the dogs were all very friendly. It was cute watching them munch on snow during the break. Apparently, all of the dogs were Joe's own dogs! In addition to dog sledding, they also offer snowmobiling and ice fishing. Booked dog sledding on viator, maybe better to call the place to see direct pricing. Requires a bit of a drive, very close to north pole city. Its quite boisterous as the dogs get excited seeing each other in competitive spirit. It seems like they contract individual dog musher teams to conduct the tour which makes me feel good about the sledding. They also have snow mobile tours. Inside they offer gear if needed, however i heavily recommend some sort of hat and face covering and touchscreen gloves as the ride can be freezing. The mushers are friendly and you can tell really love their dogs. They even compete in races and the mushers themselves seem like a family to each other. Once you go in there is a bit of a wait and they will give u a buzzer to let u know when they are ready in case you want to wait in your car. The ride was actually a decent length, i expected it to be like a long wait and maybe a 10 minute ride, but it actually seemed close to the 30. We sat 2 people in one sled and 1 in the other. Overall I'd recommend it if you'd like a unique experience. Only wish I got to spend more time with the dogs and interact more/pictures. read more

While planning our trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, I checked out viator for excursions and activities in the area. I came upon ice fishing which is something I knew my son would love. Better yet was that it was ice fishing in a heated cabin! Something I knew the rest of us would love. Our excursion was provided by Rod's Alaskan Guide Service and it was excellent. We arrived at one of their two cabins and were paired with a couple for our 10am to 2pm time slot. Our guide Mike thoroughly explained everything to us including safety measures and also helped us with our fishing poles and bait. We were fishing right away and within the hour we caught a salmon! The kids caught two more which really made our day. The guide will grill whatever you catch so it was a good thing we had 3 between the 4 of us to share. If you don't catch anything, they will still feed you reindeer sausage. The sausage is a mix of reindeer with beef and pork so it tasted just like a hot dog. It was a nice day so they even drilled some holes outside the cabin so we could try our luck. It was a great and memorable experience for us and would highly recommend it! read more

Our group of 7 booked the 1 hour snowmobiling and had a blast. The guys were very professional and knowledgeable to ensure we had a great experience. The only downfall was that you get to maneuver the snowmobile by pushing a button with your thumb and that makes your thumb go numb after straight driving. I had to stop a few times to release the pressure. The best part was when we were riding in the open field and everyone can drive fast as hell. Super fun and thrilling. Notably, they have hand warmers, and the helmets are heated. We then did 3-5 minutes on their practice course to get comfortable with the machine. Then we were off and running for about 50 minutes. We had her for our tour. She was great. Super chill but, at the same time, set a standard for what would and would not be tolerated. This was our first time doing ice fishing. It's not your traditional way of doing it, because we were so comfortable inside our cabin fishing, although we could've done it outside, too, if we wanted to. Trevor was very welcoming. He made sure we had everything we needed. He gave us scenarios of what to do and to do, to prevent any mishaps. We did not get to see much of the northern lights, due to weather restrictions. But at least, we got to see people on dogsled, Overall, it was a memorable experience for our family. We got to eat the fish that we caught, and we got to taste caribou sausage for the first time! This was so much fun!! We booked our reservation online and we're told to arrive 30 minutes prior to our snow machine tour. After we showed up we were greeted by a very friendly woman at the counter who walked us through the waivers (you must sign in order to participate and there are no insurance options so definitely use at your own risk!!!) and asked us to take a seat on the benches. We were greeted by another friendly woman who helped us with sizing for the provided winter gear. Once we were geared up we were greeted by Victoria. Victoria is a BADASS. She was one of the highlights on our trip to Fairbanks as far as staff is concerned. She took us over to the snow machines, took us through a very detailed (but short) orientation on how to operate the snow machines before letting us mount the machines for the practice course. You will do about 4-5 laps around the practice course (just a circle) before you take off on the trail. The rest of the tour lasted about 55 minutes to 1 hour. You are guided through a beautiful forest of trees and nature. Some of the paths get tight so make sure you're comfortable on the snow machine. We did stop at one point because we saw a baby moose and then we stopped again by the frozen river for a photo opportunity. Once we got back to the open valley we were able to open up the snow machines and get some speed going. So much fun!!!! One of the "to do" things on our trip to Alaska was snowmobiling. We emailed back and forth with this company to see if renting the machines or a tour was best for us. After several quotes, and guide from them we decided that based on price and time we had the tour was the best option for us this time. As soon as we got in, they have you sign their waiver and they supply all the gear you need: shoes, snow jumper, coat, gloves, gaiter and helmet. Then we went outside to get the training on how to drive the machines. This part does not take long, and they allow everyone to take turns to practice before we go on the actual tour. The guide asks everyone to stay on the route, and to go slow at first until everyone feels comfortable. Once he sees everyone is OK, he speeds up a bit and the real fun begins. I think we were out about 45 minutes, and halfway he stopped to see if there were some pairs that wanted to switch for the "passenger" to drive some too. He also stopped every time he notices someone did or was staying behind, making sure machines were working properly for everyone, or that the helmets weren't fogging up, etc. Once back at where we started, the staff asked us how we like the tour, and collected all the gear in and organized manner. My friend and I randomly found this spot online. It snowed the day before so there was enough snow when we were in Fairbanks to snow mobile at Rod's. Our tour was about an hour long. We had the pleasure of having Rod and one of his crew as our tour guides. Rod is a cool dude. Prior to leaving the site, we did a couple of practice rounds to make sure we got the hang of our snowmobile. They took us around a beautiful trail. We didn't get a chance to see wildlife, but the view was so beautiful. Got to see the sunset as well. We took one break to take pictures of the scene. Lucky for me, I was in the front, right behind Rod. I was able to capture memorable pictures of the tour. They for helmets, gloves, neck gaiters, and snow boots for us to borrow on our ride. The tour was fine but it's totally overpriced for what it is. I spent $350 per person for 2hours thinking that we were going to get a chance to get a more in depth experience in mushing. While the musher was super nice and the ride was pretty, it was just a long ride. We didn't handle the dogs and it the only in depth part was that we could ask 2 hours of questions. Fwiw Rod himself was not there. It seems like he just contracts out to local mushers who bring their own dogs and take you around. Yes, they are authentic local mushers, and that's nice to support, but no need to pay double to go through this outfit. I did another dog sled adventure on another day, paid half the amount, got to see the dogs in their yard, helped set them on the line, got to mush, got lots of explanation. That felt way more authentic, at half the cost. If you're in North Pole and have money to burn, this is fine. It was a nice tour. Nice mushers and dogs. But there is more value if you look elsewhere. Followup to the owners comments, i added the online description. We were not advised about the set up, care and feeding, call commands. We did have a nice long tour with a nice musher, not "an immersive musher experience." If a nice long tour is all you want, great, that's what you'll get! The owner, to his credit, was nice and called to understand the issues after i posted the review. However, no one returned my calls in advance of the trip. That would have been more helpful. read more

I want to post a ONE STAR SNOWMOBILE review and a FIVE STARS ICE FISHING. 3 stars is the average but really doesn't appropriately describe either activity! FIVE STARS (as good as it gets!) ICE FISHING: Fishing inside a warm cabin with a FUN guide who cleans and cooks your fish. What could be better??? This was great! Cody was an excellent host. He was kind, funny, so very helpful and entertaining. He was attentive to all the guests- obvious he likes what he does, is good at it. and wants us to have a great experience. After getting a pole, a place to sit, and hanging up our coats, our lines were baited for us, and we received a few hints about depth and technique. It was fun interacting with the other guests while listening to great classic rock music - sometimes with the lights off. Cody was always busy (but not too busy to chat): he kept the wood stove stoked, and while it never got hot inside considering it was colder than negative 25 degrees that evening, it was pretty warm and only my toes got cold. Many of the guests were from Los Angelas and even they seemed comfortable:) We were offered hot chocolate and cold water throughout the time. The Reindeer (caribou) sausages were grilled on the wood stove after a couple hours and were pretty yummy. There were seven small king salmon caught by the 12 of us in the group ( with my husband and I each catching 2). I'm sure it was more fun catching than not, but it appeared all enjoyed our time. Cody then cleaned all the fish and then cooked them with butter and seasoning in foil packets on the wood stove. Even a non-fish lover like myself found them to be flaky, mild, and tasty. Although it was a really cold night, the rising moon was gorgeous and worth the trips outside. The four hours flew by and it was definitely a highlight of the trip! ONE STAR SNOWMOBILING Took a while to find the Snowmobile Tour as the link provided in the email from Rod's kept trying to direct us the fastest way onto the pipeline access road- an unplowed snowmobile trail! We called but the employee didn't know how to direct us from where we were (less than a mile as the crow flies) told us house Apple Maps which we were using, and kept asking us if we were heading towards some road which of course we had no idea. Because of the lack of snow, the tour was reduced to one hour instead of two. They supply all gear and even had stuff to fit my 6'4" husband. After dressing up for -25 degrees, we were instructed to warm up our machine doing laps. It was obvious from the puttering speeds of the rest of the group, that they were insecure and needed coaching. My heated helmet wouldn't warm so icing made visibility impossible. A change in the machine made no difference. A new helmet had the wrong size plug, so the guide (Victoria) attached a Y to the rear jack, plugged both rider and driver in the back. Unfortunately, both our visors were iced up for the entire trip, so I opened mine and crouched behind the windshield to drive. We got going, traveling under 10mph, and when a group headed back passed us heading out, about half our group turned back with them. I hoped we'd then go faster, but I was wrong. With only one guide who was in the front, we were lucky when a couple of us took a wrong turn at a fork that the guide realized we were missing and came back. (Had we been instructed how to reverse, it may have been less stressful.) I didn't think it felt safe to have no one assigned to pick up the rear. Anyway, we continued this way a while and then turned around. There was no stop on the lake, no photos taken. We now felt lucky it was only one hour since the full tour would have felt like torture. Understand, I am no daredevil. I've only been snowmobiling once before in Oregon but that was an exhilarating blast going 30-40 mph. THIS was not THAT by a long shot. Some say you can only go as fast as the slowest member in your group and the the guide company has no control over that. I was told by one of their experienced guides that this is not the case. He said that the guides should coach drivers to go faster than their initial comfort speed until they're not scared. Also, we should have been divided after seeing how we did on the warmup laps but this didn't happen. He also said that our guide was relatively inexperienced; we paid the price. BTW, another group that had returned was led by the owner and they said they went fast, had great fun, all their helmets worked fine, and they got photos. (In retrospect, why our guide didn't ask Rod when they passed us going back for assistance with out equipment, maybe switch out helmets, cables or machines, or help with slow guests I don't know.) So maybe the guide makes the ride! This mis-adventure was a bummer yet when we shared our disappointment, and yet no one seemed concerned. Maybe it was fortunate we didn't get photos so it will be easier to forget. read more

Wanted to shout out Rod's company, the great staff, and the treks we took part in. I wanted to highlight the great fishing guide we had, Romay, seasoned in the Alaskan outdoors - and did a fine job seasoning the fish we caught! It was our first time in Alaska - myself, my fiancé, and her dad. Ro had plenty of insight on how to enjoy the activity, history of the area, and an appreciation for the different skill levels demonstrated by each participant. The cabin was warm, the fish were biting (I came up empty but the other two got 4 between them!) and we had the option to fish in the cabin or out on the lake a-ways. 4 hrs went by mighty fast, even got a chance to say hi to Rod himself. Also want to shout out Victoria on the 2-hour snowmobiling tour. The three of us joined her and a handful of others, and I had a frickin blast flying along the trails and the frozen lake!! We booked a snow mobile as well as an ice fishing tour! Both were amazing! We were ready to go on the snow mobile and my 5 year old decided he was gonna pee in his pants . So of course I had to change him and that ate up most of what our time on the snow mobile would have been but Rod was so nice he let us take a later tour for the full hour. They accommodated my son and I, so we were very happy and very grateful. Rod has 5 kids and was super understanding so kudos for that! The snow mobile tour with Andrew was super fun and we got to see Moose! We got to run around the winter wonderland and whizz over hills!!! Would definitely do this again!!! Our ice fishing tour with Clarence was awesome as well! He cooked us up some reindeer hot dogs that were yummy, made us hot chocolate and the best thing....was I never had to bait my own hook bc he was awesome and did it for me! I even caught three fish! All in all our tours were awesome and the service was sooo amazing! Everything was top notch! If you are gonna spend your money doing stuff in Alaska, this is the place to coordinate all those activities!
