If I could describe the service I received here in two words, it would be kind and accommodating! I kept hearing strange noises from my brakes, which Friendly's assessed quickly and were able to fix in less than 2 days of my dropping the car off! Not only were they efficient, but Friendly's allowed me to leave and pick up the car without having to shift my work hours which collided with their opening hours. All contact I had was over Yelp, text, and call - all of which was so kind and professional! I can't think of anything bad to say about them - they even vacuum your car for you! Full update coming soon...Previous post and rating was premature. Broke my rule of never post/rate on first visit. Everything is always ok when things go according to plan but when they don't, things can go awry (awry defined- away from the expected, planned or expected course, amiss) there could be trouble trouble (in my dollar bill voice from the movie Player's Club) My clutch was sticking. Called in and spoke with someone who made speculated diagnosis over the phone. When my husband (who also works in automotive for 20+ yrs) offered suggestions for better customer relations the lady became defensive and told him she didn't appreciate him trying to tell her how to do her job. He mentioned it only because all I heard (knowing nothing about cars) was "it's not covered under your warranty" He apologized. She kept it going. He apologized again and asked if they could move past it now. When I called today to go let someone "duplicate the problem" I was met in the parking lot by a man who told me they wouldn't be able to service my car because my husband stressed out his wife. That has nothing to do with me! I will say that my husband Is dark brown skinned and God gave him a very deep big voice. He is misunderstood by some, as are many who look like him and sound like him. The service industry is tough. Everything will not always go as planned. Period. So! If you get your vehicle repaired at this place, pray that you don't have any issues and if you do, you'd better talk really really sweet, no matter what the receptionist diagnoses your problem as over the phone or they won't allow you in the building, they won't accept you apology (for corrective criticism) and they will not repair your vehicle ever again at their facility, warranty or not! I just walked out of this place with my girlfriend and am very dissatisfied. We were told over the phone a diagnostic would be free of charge if she brought in her vehicle. We brought it in the vehicle, got it diagnosed, then we're charged 50 dollars to be told we need 2 new tires. I told the "manager" that we were told it would be free by the guy on the phone and the response was "he's not here now and won't be back for almost a week" so sorry but we are charging you. Wow. I honestly could write about Friendly's all day. Krystal, Eddy, and Ty are absolute wizards and I would not be on the road without them. I have two 20+ year old cars (a travel camper and an old Jeep) and they are in the shop A. LOT. It's usually something major on them that's going out, but if I ask them to show me how to do something or if it's a repair they think I can do they give me honest, useful advice. When I started looking for a camper van Krystal and Eddy (who are van people too!) texted me back and forth about Craigslist posts, giving me advice and warnings, and helped look over several candidates. One in particular was in such bad shape they ended up walking the owner through what needed to be done, other shops she could take it to for different parts of the work, and gave her print outs so she could have info on what was broken available to a different buyer. Once I finally bought my van Krystal made me a gift basket to celebrate with a mug, stickers, tea, a little thing of whiskey, and a special stone since she could tell I'm a crazy rock collecting gal. Later, when I needed tools to get my front seats out and put new flooring and Eddy lent me a few tools to take home and bring back after I was done. I've come in so many times to just ask for advice and if I can hold off on a repair, and they always take the time to come look and do a quick fix or tell me a timeline that I can wait. If they ever aren't able to help with something or if it's a specialized job that they know a different shop can do for less (I had to have my van trans rebuilt and I needed a spare tire after having two of mine blow out) they always have several recommendations for other shops who can get it done. It never feels like they're forcing you into a repair and I always feel like I'm getting the best price and service. You never really want a mechanic shop to be the place you're in the most, but this one feels like family and I honestly love coming in and seeing everyone. They all also have amazing dogs that make an appearance sometimes! I've been recommending this shop to friends since I first started going and most of them have made Friendly's their go-to shop as well. They're like a hairdresser- once you find the perfect one that's your person for life. I'm lucky I live so close to them, but I'd drive any distance to keep having them look after my vehicles. A few years ago, the AC compressor in my Civic snapped my timing belt. I had it towed to a garage on South Congress, only to be told that it would be $1600 to fix. Eff that. I'm a broke college student; ain't no one got money for that. Just when all hope was lost, I discovered Friendly's Auto Repair. They saved my life. I explaned my broke-ness, and Krystal did not hesitate to come up with a plan. She suggested that I could take out the AC system all together and just put in a shorter drive belt. That way, I could still get from point A to point B. The Downside: I had no more AC; The Upside: This solution was $1400 cheaper than the first garage. I was ecstatic that they were able to come up with an affordable way to keep me mobile. Krystal was really patient with my lack of automotive knowledge and used spare parts and diagrams to clearly explain the problem and how they were able to fix it. After that experience, they have gained a customer for life. Seriously, they are litterally one of my favorite companies in Austin, along with HEB and UFCU. I could go on and on and on. Thank you for being so awesome Friendly's. Please never change. tl;dr: Friendly's is astonishingly affordable, honest, and, well, friendly! Eddie double checks all that he does and they literally left my truck cleaner and better than they found it. "Friendly" is a perfect name. This place is all that and a big fat bag of your favorite potato chips. Went in to get an oil change after having my engine replaced, and I was greeted right away. Their staff is indeed friendly, and attentive to concerns you may have about your vehicle. This is huge, most auto places don't even ask! After I was offered a good ol' cup of joe, I sat back down on the comfortable bench inside the office. Hard to explain, but all the feelings I've gotten from this place are positive. They even offered to help a gal with her luggage out to her car, talk about excellent customer service! I witnessed the great people of Friendly's explaining and addressing any and all concerns that a few customers had. They also explained the work done to their vehicles in a way that wasn't complicated, nor condescending. Myself included, they took care of each customer with care and patience. They explained everything that would be included in the oil change, including checking fluids, and giving an above par overall inspection. Forget your Jiffy Lube and Lamb's, because this place is the real deal. They're ACTUALLY giving your car the attention that it needs! You know they also provide services like a "Road Trip Inspection" and "Buyers/Sellers - Comprehensive Inspection", two services that are highly useful that you might not get from your other current mechanic. Friendly's is seriously awesome. Eddy, Mike and Crystal are all wonderful. They go above and beyond. I took my car in for an oil change, and was pleasantly surprised to find their loaner bikes, along with a map of area coffeshops or bike trails if you needed it. Since I just live 2 miles away, the bike enabled me to go home rather than wait. Mike also came to pick up me and the bike later that afternoon - he said it was too hot for me to ride back. :) Eddy didn't charge me a lot of oil change upcharges for my Mini Cooper (which ALWAYS happens), and he inspected an A/C problem I was having, at no cost to me. He did a really thorough inspection, and although he didn't have Mini Cooper tools to repair it, he diagnosed EXACTLY what was wrong with it. (Saving me time and money at the place I took it to have the A/C repaired). He did a lot of extras too (rotated my tires etc) without charging extra, and he told me I needed a new air filter, which would cost $30. Seemed reasonable to me, but when I went to pay for the repair, the air filter was only $15. Turns out Eddy had gone to the trouble to find, and order, a less expensive one (even though it wasn't a very expensive part anyway). THAT is customer service. Eddy also inspected a car I was considering buying, doing an incredible inspection for mechanical problems, previous wrecks, water damage etc - all for $45. These folks are really great - very professional, reasonable prices, will do extras for you. I am thrilled to find them and will take care of all my auto care needs here. read more

Mike and Eddie really live up to the name of this shop. Both were extremely welcoming and helpful when I called them up with a blown water pump and bad ball joints in my 1995 200SX. They next day'd the parts and had my car finished quicker than I expected. Eddie was more than happy to explain exactly what had gone wrong and what was fixed. I'll be coming back here for the next problem that goes beyond my own mechanical aptitude. I have never been more impressed by an auto repair shop than I was by Friendly's. Though I had already read some of its many positive reviews, Friendly's went way above and beyond my expectations. Not only did Eddy and Mike take perfect care of my car at a very affordable rate, they also gave stellar customer service. When I came in for my oil change appointment, I immediately realized I had left my wallet at the house. Super embarrassing. No problem, Mike told me. And, while Eddy started work on my Chevy, Mike drove me home to pick up the wallet. He then dropped me off at a local coffee shop (Hot Mama's - delicious) so I could relax somewhere comfortable while I waited for my car. When we returned to the shop, Eddy had finished changing my oil and giving my car a full check-up. He gave me the details. My wiper blades, for example, will need a replacement soon. Eddy told me that they sell wiper blades at Friendly's, and then he told me where I could get them for less. So Friendly! At this point I was totally blown away by the generosity. When at last I arrived at home, I realized my car was noticeably cleaner than... well... ever, frankly. The empty cups from my cup holders had been thrown away, and all of my loose clutter had been organized in a bag and placed neatly on the passenger side. Beneath the gas and break pedals was a mat that said, "We take pride in your vehicle." And I thought, "Wow. They really mean that." Thank you, Friendly's! I think the way Bill and his mechanic crew handled my car situation was reflective of the IDEAL service any customer with car trouble should be looking for. There was an awful sound coming from my breaks and driver side tires that I wasn't sure of the cause. Despite having a full days worth of clients to cover, Bill allowed me to walk-in without an appointment (after calling a few minutes ahead) and sit in the car with me as I drove to diagnose the issue. After going on a quick ride and having the car lifted for further inspection, he and his crew gave me their candid opinion on what the issue was. The part I appreciate about Bill and his crew the most was their willingness to have an open-dialogue with me on what the issue might be despite me not being an auto-mechanic. They took the time to give me a clear explanation on their diagnosis and listened earnestly to any questions or concerns I had about their diagnosis. They did their thing and charged me the agreed upon price. The price they charged for parts and labor was several hundred dollars less (more than 300 less) than the price quotes I received from 2 other auto shops I visited. This is because the parts and service Bill suggested were devoid of unnecessary and extraneous parts/services that the other shops tried to sneak in. Best of all? My car is fixed, silent, and smooth. Do not be mislead by the rugged 'mom and pop' look of the place. From my experience shopping around town for auto service, I've learned that as a customer all you're looking for is a place with honest and competent mechanics. First off, I am just now signing up for yelp, and this is my first review ever. So, let it be known that I like this place THAT much. My boyfriend and I were so lucky to stumble upon Friendly's shortly after they opened. We found them when our car wouldn't start from our driveway. We called them and Eddie (as friendly as you would ever want) came right over and checked it out. That's right, a free friendly house call. He told us it was the battery, jumped it for us, and then was plain honest about the fact that he was not the cheapest guy for the new battery and installation, and he told us exactly who was! Wow! Our minds were blown. We wanted to give this guy some money to show our appreciation, so we brought the Civic back in later that week to get our AC fixed. He did so in a jiffy and for cheep! So of course next time we needed an oil change we went back. He and his girlfriend, the receptionist, are always a pleasure to talk to. They got us in and out for the best price possible, gave our lil' Civic a report card and explained everything. Best part? Our car was TRASHED from a cross country road trip earlier that month and when I got in it to drive it away from Friendly's, I found that they had cleaned the entire interior for us! I'm talking trash removed, our personal items neatly tucked away in a bag and the car vacuumed. They really go above and beyond here. Honest customer service with a smile! Eddy truly embodies the spirit of Austin with this shop. I have recommended him to everyone I know for several reasons. I bought an eco-friendly oil change here and my car has never run so smooth! Eddy even rotated the tires while he was at it. There are two yellow bikes available so that you and a friend can ride to the local coffee shop while he works on your car. He offers several free services, and his prices are better than anyone else. They even send a thank you note after your visit. Several people I've sent his way have told me how great their experience was, how friendly the staff is, and how he did some awesome feat that no one has ever been able to do (i.e. get that check engine light off once and for all). I am so glad to see him doing well, the first time I visited the shop there were only a few cars there. Now it is always packed, so obviously word is spreading that this place is a jewel in Austin. Small, no frills repair shop perfectly located on East 5th but most importantly...HONEST. I have been here twice now with 2 different car situations and got straight forward answers. They don't try and nickel/dime you (or flat out lie - see my review of Kwik Kar Bee Cave and Maxwell Ford) with radiator flushes, brake line flushes...etc. They will tell you what needs to be done. No real waiting room, I consider it more of a drop off and come back place. read more

If you have a late model American or Japanese vehicle, this is the only place in town to have it repaired. These guys are awesome. I have had my suspension replaced here, as well as a number of other repairs, and I have always been happy knowing it was done right. I have referred several friends, all of whom have been very pleased with the quality of the work, the pleasant service, and the pricing. Unfortunately for me, I drive a VW Diesel, so for some repairs I still have to go to a VW specialist, but for everything I possibly can, I take my car to Friendly's because I always get the highest quality service for my vehicle, at an honest price, with a smile. I'm so glad I found this place. I'm semi-new to Austin and wasn't sure where to bring my truck in for the creaking sound it was making. I checked yelp in my neighborhood and saw nothing but good reviews. They're legit. Eddie, Mike and Crystal really go above and beyond in the area of customer service. Eddie showed me my U-joints that he had replaced, explained their function and what they should look like, and took time to answer several questions about my truck, some unrelated to the work performed. As mentioned in other posts, they have loaner bikes, bike maps for purchase, and will give you a ride/pick you up if you need it. They called a couple times to let me know the progress of the work on my truck and approximately when it would be ready. And their charges are extremely reasonable. Oh, and this week I just noticed that they also filled my windshield washer fluid reservoir for me, too! read more

Friendly is a great way to describe this shop. If you don't want to read everything - simply put, highly recommended. First - when calling them, Eddie was easy to talk to and work with. Had a good feeling already. When I dropped off my truck, I expected to call a cab or Uber and instead Eddie offered to give me a lift home. On the ride, he was friendly and easy to talk to. I'm really liking these guys. Unfortunately, they ended up not being able to work on my truck (it's a Dodge Ram 3500 w/ diesel engine - so it's pretty heavy) and was just too big for their equipment. Instead of just asking me to come back and pick up my truck, though, they did an initial diagnosis, recommended another shop and offered to take it over there immediately for me -- all at no cost. So - if they're willing to do this for me -- imagine how well they'll treat you. I say, give them a try. I'll definitely be a customer in the future. read more

My Accord could not start in the morning a couple weeks ago, so I drove to Friendly's to see if I need replacement spark plugs. Eddy told me I don't have to, it's just the battery's problem. He checked the engine, oils and fluids to make sure there's no problem. It's almost an overall mechanical check. The whole stuff took him almost 2 hours, but he didn't charge me the labor. I asked Eddy numerous questions how to maintain my Accord, he really did a job in answering them, and helped me to check my maintenance record. He also helped me to changed the O-ring in the steering wheel - $10 labor, much much lower than the Howdy Honda's charge. The guy is great. I would recommend you Eddy If you are looking for a great auto repair with reasonable price. My husband & I were evacuating from Galveston to Austin with our 1-yr old son during Hurricane Laura. On the way back after the storm passed, our car started shaking really bad & wouldn't accelerate even though my husband was flooring it. I quickly looked up mechanic shops & Friendly's popped up as it was only 5 mins away from where we were on the highway. When we got there, we were immediately greeted pleasantly & they assured us they could take a look. Because of Covid, their lobby is currently closed, but they made an exception since we had a baby with us. They ran the diagnostics on our car & Krystal immediately found out what was wrong. She was able to reset the VVT sensor which would let us get to Houston rather than having the vehicle towed. I can't stress enough of how incredibly grateful I am for Friendly's. If it wasn't for them, we would have been stranded. We were able to get to Houston safely. However, their service didn't stop there. Later on in the evening, they texted my husband to make sure we had got home safe without any issues. I highly HIGHLY recommend this place to everyone in the Elgin/Austin area. I love this place. Just like the name..friendly.. Crystal is so helpful. My mom needed to leave her car there over night and they gave her a ride to pick up my nephew and then to her house. (Across town) Another time they put shocks on my husband's car. They called to see if they could have it a few more hours because they wanted to try some different schocks that would be better. I came here on a recommendation from my auto body shop and these people are so nice! It was easy to make an appointment online to get my oil changed. When I arrived, I asked if I'd be able to add on a tire rotation (you can't add both online with their reservation system) and they were nice enough to do that, too. They vacuum your car when they're done and that was honestly the greatest thing ever for me (hate doing that myself). I was in and out in 45 minutes, which was a nice change of pace. They charge about the same as the dealership for the oil and tire rotation together, but the service was friendly (yep, their name checks out) and quick. Thank you so much! read more

I had a great experience and they even vacuumed my floor boards... they noticed something wrong with one of my pumps and they are going to email me with the details. I brought my car in this morning because it was making a loud noise. They said they had about 15 cars in front of me and I would probably have to leave it overnight. They asked me to describe the issue and they came out and took a quick look. They knew exactly what the issue was and said they could actually get it done in an hour. Also a long over due review. Had my car towed to Friendly's back in August. A coolant leak from a weak spot in a hose had my car overheating and not drive-able. This was 2 weeks after I moved to town. So I had my car towed to the Friendly's Auto Shop. To ease my anxiety of having my car towed and "lost", Krystal texted me to let me know that my car arrived to the shop. After diagnosing the problem, Krystal rang with the details - which turned out to be better that I expected. Their mechanics quickly made the repairs and my car was ready the same day. The entire experience was great, I got my car back quickly, and the cost for the repairs was very reasonable. I've found my car repair shop here in Austin. Good show Friendly's! read more

Friendly's is aptly named. Everyone I've dealt with there has been almost supernaturally friendly and welcoming. I went there today to pick up my car, and Crystal greeted me by name as I walked in the door and commented that she hasn't seen me in two years. I get a warm, fuzzy feeling every time I go there. In addition to the great people, Friendly's does great work at a reasonable price. They don't charge for diagnostics and will tell you if your car has an issue that should be covered by the dealership. I brought my car in one time and they told me my repair should be free at the dealership. When the dealership refused, someone from Friendly's called up there and got the dealership to cover the repair. They made $0 from this but earned my undying loyalty. They also take the time to clean out your car, even if they don't end up charging for a repair. Who does that? Finally, they have a store cat. That's awesome in my book. read more
