As a girl, I wanted a trustworthy mechanic, when I went to change my oil at another place they told me it had a leak, I took my car to Excalibur, the front desk guy was nice and told me they would check my car for the leak and all the things, he quoted me upwards of $600 dollars - I agreed. I left my car about 2 days this was in March and then I picked it up, they told me they fixed the leak, that the smell of oil would linger until the car had burned the oil that spilled down, I drove my car, and consistently saw leaks and smelled oil, I thought it was my AC water in the floor, I worked from home so I don't drive my car a lot, come July and the oil change light came on, it has never come on before, even when I had not changed my oil.. I took it to Excalibur for the oil change, I made an appt for 8AM as reccomended by the front desk guy James - I get there at 8, I greet him, he looks at me, doesn't greet me, no answer, he looks miserable, he just barks at me "last name?" I give him my last name, they take my car, I sit and wait. Another lady comes in and he's all the sudden all smiley and nice.. when my car is done. He barks at me that my car is done.. I go to pay, he tells me my car is leaking oil.. and that I could have blown the motor.. I tell him that I thought they had fixed that 3 months ago.. he looks surprised back tracks and says oh it's probably not the same leak.. the leak probably went to another weak spot- but to bring the car in again and they look at it- I do... he calls me and tells me that it's a different leak- I ask him that why didn't they fix it back then - he says my car is old, he tells me it's "100% on you" that I didn't call them sooner - James was super rude and standing behind subpar lazy service- he wanted to charge me upwards of $400 to fix the leak - I said no, took it to my other mechanic- my other mechanic said that the leak was visible and that they had only changed the top part and not the actual main leak on the car - never going back there again, James if you don't want to be professional and patient, even my boyfriend that doesn't know you said you were super rude to him when he went to drop of my car - just save everyone the agony of your services. I knew I wasn't gonna get my money back and I wouldn't trust my car back in their hands.. never again.. read more

The limited slip diff they installed feels like new again and has been completely issue free for the month I've had my car back. My car died on the highway and I had it towed here, I called them soon after when I figured out it was bc my gas gauge was inaccurately reading as if there was gas in the tank and there wasn't, I was still charged an hour of service anyway. Then I asked to have the front window fixed because it wasn't working, they charged me another hour of service but "unfortunately" could not fix it. So $275 for .... Nothing. But I guess getting ripped off by a mechanic is always the gamble. Glad they didn't have to actually fix something! Imagine what that would have cost! read more

I don't think I've ever been so impressed with a mechanic shop in my life. I brought by new-to-me Durango in for a third party mechanic to look it over for anything I should be aware of. I came in on short notice at the end of their day and James at the front desk was still happy to see me. They found the source of a sound it was making (a pair of pliers had fallen into the engine compartment) and we had a good laugh about it together. They took a look at some evidence of water damage and gave me some advice about that and how to handle the extended warranty I had purchased. At the end of all this, they didn't even charge me. Talk about kindness!! I also got the feeling from the mechanics working in the back that they all enjoy and respect each other - seems like a fun place to work. And their waiting room is really comfortable if you ever need to just hang out while getting some work done. I'd go back in a heart beat for any car maintenance/repair needs. At the suggestion of that mechanic, we got a recommendation from AAA for a mechanic here in Austin. They recommended Excalibur Automotive Repair. It was a great experience. We had to have an inspection done and some repairs to our 1999 Toyota 4Runner. New ball joints, rotors, and a battery. Mike and his crew are knowledgeable and fair. He kept us up to date on when we would be able to pick up the truck and was very kind to keep the truck over the weekend because our oldest service dog had to cross Rainbow Bridge. Brad was FANTASTIC! I had a crappy battery (a year old) from Advance Auto Parts and the guys there sent me over here to Excalibur to get the battery "charged"... well they charged my battery for 2 hours and it still wasn't working properly, so I needed a new battery. Advance Auto was giving me a hard time about sending a battery over, but Brad spent 2 minutes on the phone with them and next thing I know my battery and paperwork is being brought to me for the technicians at Excalibur to change. To top it off, after hearing my story, Brad didn't even charge me for the hours my car spent here being charged! Just for the battery change! WILL Damage Your Car! I used to think these guys were the best mechanics in town. I've been going to them for like 10 years or something. In the last couple years, things have gone significantly downhill, and it's hard for me to tell if it's on the front end or the back, but this week both of them failed spectacularly. After taking my car in on Thursday, telling them what needed doing, and saying I really needed it back on Friday for work, I never got a phone call back from them. I had to call the next day on my own to check in, and then they told me they'd call right back. Two hours later I finally hear that they've done maybe 1/3 of the work I asked for, and just now (in the final hours of Friday) are looking at one of the main issues I had. I get it. You're understaffed. Fucking tell me that before I leave my transportation with you, knowing that I need it back at a certain time. They finally get back to me at the end of Friday with a quote. I ask for my car back, but they said it's not drivable. Cue me scrambling all weekend to get things sorted for work Monday, when they say they'll have it completed early in the day. Good thing I didn't trust that, and had a back up plan, because they had it done at 4pm. When I got there, I paid. None of the office guys who usually seem to know their stuff are around for some reason. They've parked my car NOT in their secure parking lot but across the street in what looks to be an abandoned church parking lot. Once I get home, I find out: 1. The tire they were supposed to fix but couldn't find any issue with (because it's under warranty) has a very clear piece of metal embedded in the tread. I can see if just fine. 2. All the jack and tire gear was basically just tossed back in and promptly rolled around til it fell out. 3. The spot on the sliding door was not only scratched but DENTED along the railing that they were supposed to fix. 4. Several spots along the drivers side were scratched up almost looking like someone took a tool, key, knife to the siding of my car. This was NOWHERE near the area that needed fixing. This is all after they screwed up my A/C after having something else replaced last time I was there, charging me for windshield wipers they forgot to install, trying to convince my wife that her new car battery absolutely needed replacing (she had to drive it through the winter storm for work and it started every time), and giving me false info on tires on another car I sent to them (confirmed by the people I ended up buying tires from). It really sucks, because I liked these guys and this place. A lot. I've recommended them to I don't know how many people. I don't know if the ownership has changed or management, or what, but this place is just fucking awful. And now I get to look into my legal options. What fun. read more

I wanted to believe the hype but it seems just about everything that could possibly go wrong did. For starters they weren't very transparent as I confirmed speaking with the mechanic. In a nutshell I spent $1,300 for a fuse starter wire relocated somewhere and possibly a clutch master cylinder. The reason I know is i got the truck back in the same condition it was left in. I recently took my car into Excalibur for my 80K mile 44-Point Preventative Maintenance Analysis. I had been to Excalibur in the past for car registration-related things but never any type of repair. I dropped my car off expecting them to call me in an hour with a list of things that "needed" to be fixed on my car, as mechanics have done in the past. Instead, they told me that everything looked great on my car with the exception of something very minor, which they were able to take care of. Mike handed me the invoice and told me I was all set for the day, there was no charge. What a surprise! They are funny, friendly, personable, yet professional and great at what they do. I called and explained what I was experiencing and in spite of it being close to the end of business, was told to bring my car by and they would take a look at it. Upon my arrival I was greeted with the same standard of courteousness. They inspected my vehicle and gave me a thorough breakdown of the items that I should have serviced. What I appreciated the most, was that they even took the time to prioritize which issues should be addressed first! At the end of the day, I have to say that my experience with Excalibur was great! They almost killed my girlfriend. After they looked at the brakes and we drove away happily, a couple of days later the brake peddle which is normally pretty responsive pushed all the way to the floor before finally stopping the car... Excalibur cleaned dust out of the rear brakes. Not a rebuild. Nothing big.. just cleaning dust out of brakes that had had absolutely no problems and after their work it was a hairs breadth from causing an accident and could very easily been a killer. According to the (OTHER) mechanics who later corrected the problem the brakes were over-tightened.. resulting in overheating of the brake fluid and almost complete loss of function after a short drive (they worked fine on start up and for short hops.. but 20 minutes driving was enough to turn them to near useless mush. The burning smell was sort of a give away. ). I thought about taking it back to Excalibur to correct their problem but decided they only got one shot at killing someone close to me. I took it to another mechanic who fortunately for them said that 'this is a thing that happens sometimes' so... I'm just going to leave it at a sharp..."No, not ever, not once go to this place. They lack both diligence and competence." Also.. not so hot on price either. read more

I visited Excalibur on three occasions, spending over $1,000 in total, and now my car is essentially useless. Summary: took car in because of Overheating, and TWICE after "fixing" the overheating issue, the car was overheating again within a few days. Best case scenario I can see is that they were simply unable to properly diagnose the issue and fix it. Full story: I originally came in because my car was overheating. They did an inspection and a small fix ($~150), while also giving me an estimate on an oil leak unrelated to the overheating issue. Since the car seemed to be working again, I decided to go ahead and take it in a couple days later for the leak issue (since it would be easier to be away from work all in the same week). After the leak issue was "fixed" (~$320), the car again seemed to be working, although despite my explicitly asking, they did not let out the oil so it would be at the proper level (I had accidentally overfilled it). The next week, car was overheating again, to the point where I was almost unable to get it started again on my lunch break (and was late getting back to work). Giving Excalibur once more the benefit of the doubt (and hoping that they would at least diagnose it for free since clearly the overheating issue had not originally been fixed), I took it in. They explained that it was a different issue that would cost ~$600, and, despite my misgivings, I went ahead and paid. After the last "fix", the car was immediately still broken and overheating, plus it was leaking some oil (despite the supposed "fix" on that). They had also again not let out any oil, so it was still overfull. All in all, I am deeply unsatisfied with the service I got at Excalibur Automotive. Although I can say that the guy manning the desk was friendly, it doesn't matter at all if after spending over $1,000 I still have a car that's more broken than ever. read more

My friend recommended Excalibur on 183/Peyton Gin when I was looking for a shop that was taking precautions for COVID (basic stuff, ie: wearing masks). Unfortunately it turned out to be a poor recommendation on that point. We're stage 5 here right now, which means that all businesses are supposed to be taking the highest precautions available. But hardly anyone was wearing masks, or following the rules of the hand-written sign posted on the lobby counter ("No entry without a mask" - lol!!!). 1. None of the mechanics wore a mask. Which actually seems fine to me, since they work in an open garage where air flow in and out is as close to outdoors as you can get. I had no issue with this, due to air flow and minimal contact with customers. (Do they wear masks if they talk to customers?? No idea, but it seems unlikely because....) 2. Two people were at the desk when I walked into the small lobby. They were talking closely together, both without masks. When I noticed this and drew back, one of them found a mask and put it on (very loosely). The other person stuck his hand in front of his face instead; I guess he thought that was the same thing, but NO. Gross. 3. I was given the option of sharing the lobby with these folks, or waiting outside in the rain. I picked the rain. (There is a tarp though, yay.) 4. By the time I went back to the lobby to pay, only one of those employees was there -- again sans mask. I don't know why they bother with the sign at the desk, because clearly the culture here is anti-mask. Anti-maskers will be fine here; and the inspection was otherwise quick and easy. Brought my truck in on January 2, 2023 for an oil change and tire rotation. Made an appointment through RepairPal as I was new to area. Garage never confirmed appointment. I had to call them. Asked them to check my tire pressure as I noticed my pressures were low. Took over two hours for service. As I was driving out of their parking lot noticed the pressure for all 4 tires were over 40 psi. My truck was not driving smoothly. They obviously just pumped air into all four tires without bothering to check pressure. Had to bring it to Discount Tire where they adjusted my tire pressure to a perfect 35 psi (recommended pressure for my vehicle) in under 10 minutes for free. Not that hard gentlemen! Did not put oil change reminder sticker in truck as requested nor did they reset oil life indicator. No attention to detail at this shop. Not what I want in a garage I'm trusting to maintain my vehicle. Will not be going back! read more

I had just bought a mid-90s Mercedes and although there were no major mechanical problems, I had a few things that needed to be repaired. Mainly, the heater blew out cool air and the oil lamp light stayed. Based on the all the 5 star reviews on here and Google, I took my car to Excalibur. After they checked it out, I was told the sensor that floats in the oil pan needed to be replaced. It was also strongly suggested that I get an oil change at the same time. Of course, I wanted to know the cost. James promised to get me an estimate but I never got one. Even though I repeatedly asked for a quote (5 times to be exact), all I got were apologies, they were busy and he forgot. It was like he was stalling. When he couldn't tell me how much they charged for a simple oil change, that was a Major Red Flag. But I was hoping they could at least fix my heater. They didn't. They replaced a blower in the heater but after a few days of lukewarm heat, it blew cool again. When I mentioned the cool air again, he gave me a song and dance about how it could be the ac that needed to be fixed because the heater/ac acted as one unit and affects how the heater works. Because it would be hard to test the ac in cold weather I should bring it back when it's warmer. He showed me how to manually overide the system to get heat but that didn't fix the problem! They had my car for a week and that's the best they could do? I was through with them. In all, I burned nearly $500 and nothing was fixed. I took my car to another mechanic who looked at the oil sensor. He told me the sensor was fine but a WIRE to the oil sensor had been CUT. He fixed it in 45 minutes and for less than $70. No parts or oil change needed. I'll also have my new mechanic check out the heater/ac next week. Excalibur gets one star for its courteous customer service but that's it. Avoid this place if you actually want your car repaired. read more

I'm terrible about taking care of my car. There's a lot of things I know well, but cars, not so much. I have trust issues with mechanics, and in the past I've taken my car to places where I feel they sense my weakness and look at me with mencing $$ signs in their eyes. A friend recommended Excalibur, gone there twice, and now I feel like these guys are like my brothers. They are genuinely concerned about my car safety AND my cashflow. They don't try to upsell me things I don't need, but they are very cool in educating me on things I should know about car care without making me feel stupid. I live off S. Lamar where I could throw a monkey wrench and hit an auto repair shop. But I still hobble my car up to Brad and the guys (most recently for brake issues) because I trust them. There, I said it. I trust my mechanic. Really surprised to see a less than favorable review here among the 5 stars. I'm guessing the guys must have been really busy, and that's just because the word is out. One more thing, my teenager will be driving soon. I'm freaked out enough about that, but I will make sure the guys at Excalibur keep her car safe. I just moved to TX and was looking for a place to get my state inspection done. I found Excalibur on Yelp and chose to take my car there, on a kind of whim. The service was very friendly and fast, the man at the counter definitely knew his stuff and since there was nobody else waiting we chatted while I waited; he even recommended burger places. I needed new windshield wipers to pass the inspection and I thought it would be a rip-off but it was very affordable; my husband was impressed with the prices.
