I visited Frigidarium more often than any other gelato shop, or restaurant for that matter, while travelling through Italy with friends. Their gelato is truly out of this world, inexpensive, creamy, witht he perfect amount of sweetness. What makes Frigidarium so unique is they hand-dip all their gelato in chocolate if you ask them to, and let me tell you, that magic shell chocolate is AMAZING. Take it from someone who is a Southern-California native, this place is totally worth visiting if you are planning a trip to Rome. So good. Was very excited to come back to our favorite gelato spot in Rome but was very disappointed to find they have been closed since Jan 13 and won't reopen until Feb 12. It's really just ice cream. It's in our heads to tho k it's better than the rest because of their marketing genius. Add Nutella to any gelato/ice cream and it tastes just as good. Some flavors have a heavy cream "ice cream" consistency and others are like mousse. Keep that in mind. We are just glad we didn't wait very long in line :) read more

Delicious! Worth the wait - for 2 Euros you can get a regular or waffle cone with up to 2 flavors, plus white or dark chocolate dip or whipped cream on top. How can you beat that? Yesterday I paid $2.30 for a very small amount of rather 'meh' ice cream elsewhere in Rome. Today I discovered Frigidarium and I'm in love. Frigidarium is honestly the best. I'm here for study abroad and I quickly realized that it's hard to find other gelaterias that even compare. For only 2 euros, you can get 2 flavors, with chocolate or creme on top for free. And every flavor is AMAZING! Eh it's alright. They have a super long line and really there are better gelato places around. Acutally I think their gelato is a great value; they give you a lot, plus free whip cream or chocolate coating for a great price. Tucked in a little street just off Victor Emanuelle, just a couple minutes of walking from Piazza Navona, the Frigidarium serves great gelato. They have the basic flavors plus a variety of fancy flavors with swirls of chocolate or cream, etc. My family agreed this was in the top 2 gelato places we'd tried in Italy. Went here on a recommendation that it was a very creamy pistachio gelato. Spent around 12 euros to get there and was expecting it to be delicious! Got to the little take out spot and didn't see any flavor that stood out. I asked to try the pistachio gelato and she seemed very unwilling. After checking the reviews and reading so many positive experiences we went to get some ice cream while in the neighbourhood. The ice cream itself was alright, I had the cookies flavoured one with chocolate dip. The dip was the bad part, it became extremely hard and impossible to eat, the ice cream underneath melted. We made a huge mess and to be honest the chocolate wasn't very good so we just ended up tossing all that part and were left with half melted ice cream. There is much better elsewhere. read more

We had gelato here. We got mango, lemon, Frigedaria (most popular), and stracciatella. All the flavors were excellent. I liked their house special the best. Kind of tasted like butterfinger but without the sweetness. The gelato was very smooth and not overly sweet. I would recommend this place over Ai Tre Tartufi. I would definitely come here again. VERY limited seating outside. The workers spoke a little English too. read more

I live right across the street from Frigidarium and I don't know if it's a curse or a blessing. For years, this place has been my favorite gelateria. You know a place has good gelato when they have good pistacchio, because that means they can make ice-cream using real ingredients and keeping the integrity of natural flavors. They make their ice-cream themselves (you can see them do it behind the counter!) and the "chef" gives you tips on which batch he thinks he made well. You can get panna (whipped cream) and a waffle cookie, or your entire gelato dipped in chocolate without extra charge. 2 euros for two flavors is cheap compared to some places that would charge 3.50 euro for far less quality. It's a small store, so you'll often see a line along the street... but it's worth the wait! read more

One thing I do have to add (as an American myself) that the place seems to attract American students abroad in Rome. And because of this, the place can be inundated with loud, drunk kids. First time I've ever had chocolate covered gelato and it was quite the treat! It's like a combination of great Italian gelato and a summer DQ soft serve shell. I'm not saying I always want my gelato dipped in a chocolate shell, but the crackly dark chocolate did go perfectly with my cinnamon gelato. I would fly to Roma just for this gelato. It's cheap, and the Frigidarium flavor is something you won't find anything else. The best part? They dip the entire thing in CHOCOLATE. YES. Simply put - best gelato in Rome that I've tried, which is now up to at least 5 or 6 places. The namesake Frigidarium flavor is the best. I also had tiramisu and stracciatelli on a waffle cone dipped (free) in dark chocolate with whatever that taste-frenzied awesome cookie they out on top is. Not a question of whether I'll go back but how often! Great recommendation from a colleague. There is a reason that place almost always seems to have a line.
