Have you been somewhere that was top notch, almost overwhelming good, and then months later you realize, "wait, I didn't write a Yelp review for that place"? Well that is me and Frog Hollow. Now let me be upfront about dress and price. This is not a place for even the most stylish of jeans to be worn or designer t-shirt. This is where you get fancy (at least nice khaki's fancy) and clean up for the evening. And when it comes to a budget, throw caution to the wind. You don't want to be asking the price of a recommended bottle of wine or glass of bourbon do you? But also know this, you get what you pay for. This is farm-to-table so not only is the quality of preparation in the kitchen high, but the ingredients are top notch and seasonal. So no, you will not find a menu favorite still around 6 months later. But that's a good thing. Now there are a few staples that stick around, but for the most part it is a new offering for your taste buds every time. Yes, there is outdoor seating. Do I recommend it? No. Currently there is a hotel being built next door (literally next door) and it is a busy section of Broad Street. Plus you want the climate control and lack of bugs anyway for such a meal. Your table will be waiting with cloth napkins, multiple forks and spoon, a water and wine glass already in place, and a team who are friendly and knowledge about everything being served. Find an excuse to go here and then go. And don't have plans immediately afterwards. I've eaten here twice and to me, it's just not worth the hype. Some people LOVE this place but I don't get it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I do enjoy getting dressed up and going to a nice restaurant but thats where it ends. The servers are quite extra. The water guy came to our table multiple times before we even ordered. He would pour water in my glass after only a few sips. If you are an introvert and enjoy being left alone while you eat, don't go here. I like some info on what I'm eating, like that it's local, but not a 15 min speech on everything from the seasoning to the infused watermelon. Chill guys, it tastes like regular watermelon. I'm a nice person and have a lot of grace for people, but I literally left angry. I gave them three stars bc, despite all of that, the Mac-n-cheese is pretty epic. This is just my opinion. What a lovely place! This farm to table restaurant really gets it right. I had the soft shell crab appetizer which was obviously super fresh. The crab was sweet and perfectly crisped. South Carolina line-caught swordfish was next, served over Carolina rice risotto with greens. The sauce was a lively citrus saffron with plenty of acid to cut thru the richness of the fish. I would have loved a French Chablis with this but the Chardonnay the sommelier chose for me was great... And for those of us who are wine junkies like me, you can get a bottle for the table and take the remainder with you. Came here 2 years ago and got proposed to. It was an absolute dream. 2 years later (today) it was less then ok but I'm giving 3 stars because I know times are tuff. The server was constantly spilling water on every refill. The person who brought our food out dropped stuff off the plate onto the table. I asked for a rag to clean it off and they handed ME the rag. Anywhere else this would be acceptable but I was a little shocked it happened here. The ratatouille was garbage at best. The steak was absolutely perfect as well as the chicken. Drinks tasted a little watered down. They off course took the ratatouille off the check but by the time the server came back after getting up and trying to track him down myself we had already finished eating and my friend left hungry. I was very disappointed knowing how great this place is. Their sister restaurant craft & vine NEVER disappoints and we eat there on a WEEKLY basis and it is by far the best restaurant within 60 miles. Until they get things back in order, which I know they will I suggest eating just a block away at craft and vine. They are owned by the same people so money still goes where it should. I even asked her if she used a script to discuss all of the dishes and wines, but she said she just had great training. Obviously its Masters week and everything is really busy. We took a chance as a walk in. We gave our name and sat out front, ordered a drink and as luck would have it, we got a table half way through my drink. They sat us in the front sort of bay window. Great table if you can get it. Their specialty is pork and the menu is as locally sourced as possible. We had the andoule sausage to start. Excellent. Then the pork shoulder and the grouper. Both excellent. Their mac'n'cheese is as good as everyone says. Collard greens were also very good. No room for dessert. Frog Hollow is my favorite restaurant in town. You have to have reservations if you want a table, but you may get bar seating if that works for you. I love everything I order, even when I'm not sure about it when ordering. You can literally close your eyes and point to a random spot on the menu and order whatever. It WILL be the best thing you ever ate. The drinks are fantastic. The Tavern Manhattan is one of the local favorites. The waiters are great at helping you match a wine to the meal. I usually order the fresh fish of the day or the pork chop, which are both amazing. I also love the broccoli bisque and the cauliflower bisque. All of the desserts are consistently great as well. My Husband and I decided to try out the Frog Hollow Tavern (FHT). It was our first time to the FHT and the name was pretty intriguing. We like to go out to affordable places that offer great dining and a quiet atmosphere. It could be either a quiet romantic place for two to a littler louder place for many. There were a very diverse crowd of people there and the web site did boast about it. Located downtown a lot of outsiders do come here, but we could tell there were a lot of locals also. One of the things we did like about this restaurant is the local and regionally grown meats and vegetables. It also has a huge wine list along with full bar to complement your tastes. The atmosphere is very relaxing with a classy style. Our waitress (Bernie) was very knowledgable as well friendly. She explained the restaurant's style. I must admit the entire staff seemed very friendly to all their customers. Located Right off Broad Street with parking in front or on the side. I would recommend coming a few minutes early depending on the time of day to ensure parking nearby.I did notice you could sit outside if you wanted to have a drink and small plate. Customer Service: They must spend a lot of time working with the staff on talking and addressing professionally as well as how to professionally serve someone. Very high standards and nice to see and experience. Every one talked, behaved and provided tid bits of the restaurant history or about the foods and even the wines. They were all very informed and I was really impressed with this high quality. Menu: With such a large wine list, our waitress was helpful in discussing the types. I did find myself wishing they paired some of their menu items with wines of their choices. Their menu is changed seasonally to reflect the vegetables and probably meats. After looking at the menu, we pretty much knew what we wanted To order. We start our evening off with some wine and they brought some delicious fresh bread and soft pats of butter. We elected on a Pinot Gris (Raptor Ridge, Willamette). With the food we were having this would go well. It is lighter with aromas of baked apple, peaches and spring flowers. Round and tender on the palate, it still has just enough lift. A perfect match to our meal of hearty southern flavors. We started out our Meal with a small plate (appetizer). We chose the House Smoked Andouille Sausage. Strong smoked flavors that were laying on a bed Anson Mills' Organic Grits with Caramelized Vidalia Onions on top. There was a small dab of the Tavern Mustard was on the side. They smoke the sausage at the restaurant and it has a very heavy smoky southern flavor. The Vidalia onions along with the mustard were just delicious. But the Grits. I must admit I was amazed! My husband wanted more. We both agreed that these were by far the best Grits we had ever tasted and when combined with the sausage, onions and mustard, it was a deliciously beautiful bite! If you like smoked sausage of any type, you need to try this! My Husband had the Florida Gulf Day Boat Red Snapper laid on a bed of FHT Andouille, Chal's Corn, Red Bell Peppers, Vidalia Onions, celery and pulled Parsley Leaves. Combined with a House Pickled Sweet Onion Butter. The large Snapper was made perfectly and very flavorful. Moist through and through along with flavors from the very fresh vegetables. It all had a southern flair and just delicious. I chose the Pan roasted Poulet Rouge Chicken, Anson Mills' Farro. Titan Farms Zucchini. Chal's Sweet Corn, baby arugula, sweet bell peppers along with a Tavern mustard red wine vinaigrette along with Leal Farms Microgree.Well, I was not disappointed. A very moist chicken with flavors that fully complimented the vegetables. I started out with the dark meat and did fully enjoy the fully body of the flavor along with the vegetables. And while I usually enjoy dark meat more, the white meat of this bird was more delicious and worked in more harmony with the vegetables. did have a bit of meat left so I took it in a to go container. (For the record, the white meat was exquisite on a salad the next day!) Both the Fish and Chicken were paired nicely with the Pinot Gris. With the flavors of the all of the meats and vegetables, the wine was perfect. We finished off the meal sharing a Strawberry Shortcake. The strawberries were fresh along with a shortcake that was very rich and flavorful. It was more like a tasty bread Cake and when you combine with the fresh strawberries and the incredible homemade vanilla bean whipped creme, it was heaven. Definitely one to share if you are full! So will we come back to this restaurant or recommend it to you? The question is not will we but when will we come back. For the money you would spend at any other fairly nice restaurant in the Augusta/Evans area, this is much better. Our expectations of fine dining at its best locally here in Augusta! read more

If I could give 0 stars.... I would. Firstly, the drinks were the only thing good on the table. We both ordered the duck after our waitress went into detail about how good and different this food should be and it tasted bland and chewy. The duck was recommended at medium. it was EXTREMELY chewy and and felt like a meat gum paste. None of our food was hot, and the there was no difference in texture between the duck, the arugula, the turnips, and the beans. The macaroni was ordered on recommendation and NEVER AGAIN!!! It was a 7layer lasagna style macaroni and cheese and it was terrible. The noodles were overcooked and mushy in the mouth. it felt like I was eating cheap fondue. we both took one bite and pushed it away. If this is the best of Augusta, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND COOK AT HOME. Sean Wight, shame on you for the preparation of the duck. bland, chewy, and entirely too much fat. I couldn't even finish the food and when I told the staff that our meal was not at all what she said it would be, we got nothing but a $125 check for food that was all cold and bland. This was not a luxury dining experience at all. Overpriced and overcooked. TERRIBLE AND NEVER COMING BACK. We felt like paypigs than customers. Management never came over neither did the chef to speak with us. We have had better service at fastfood dinners. VERY DISAPPOINTED that this was the place I had my birthday dinner. Have enjoyed every one of our 15+ past visits to Frog Hollow Tavern until last night. So many issues that we've never encountered before. They have decided to eliminate bar seating for before or after-dinner drinks. The only patrons ALLOWED to sit at the bar were also eating their meals at the bar. They have essentially converted their lovely bar into a dining-only "table", and truly guard those bar stools with rude, snarky and bitchy staff. Apparently the owner and/or manager decided that the increased food revenue is worth losing long-term patrons who enjoyed a drink at the bar, followed by their meal at an actual table in the dining room. The front hostess and the male bar-area server were unbelievably rude, and should not be in the hospitality business. Millennials at their absolute worst -- including the bitchy comments, eye rolls, whispering/pointing at customers then laughing, and overall demeanor. Simply not acceptable. Our meal was delicious, and our food server was fantastic. It's like two completely different businesses -- the bar vs. the dining rooms. Unfortunately, Frog Hollow has lost our business, and our hundreds of dollars spent each time we've dined there. Shame on you, FHT. read more

We had arrived for a few nights in Augusta, GA waiting out Hurricane Irma. So we decided to try a few restaurants. On the last night we were tired but randomly decided to try Frog Hollow Tavern and boy did we make the right choice! They had a wide variety of drinks specials and fine bourbons. We relaxed outside until our table was ready. My fiancé and both got the pork chops, mac & cheese and coller greens. The pork chops are best in the country. I'm being serious when I say that. They also have the tastiest Mac'N'Cheese I can remember. It's made like a lasagna (hard to imagine) but trust me it's life changing. People rave about this place when they are in the restaurant. I over heard other people say the same thing we were thinking, "this is the best meal I have had in last five years". When people say those things in a restaurant and you here it from a couple people around you at different tables, you know you are at a special place. These include: Whiskey aged in their own barrels, in house. Fantastic duck sausage fried in duck fat. Oyster rockerfeller with a unique, memorable blend of cheeses Mussels in wine sauce, fresh, briny, paired with amazingly crispy bread. Duck leg, a sort of southern rendition of duck confit, juicy and tender with excellent flavor and an epic serving of southern greens. Lasaugna style mac and cheese, very filling and a house classic Pecan pie with fresh ice cream. Too good. All in all, my review just echoes the praise of all the other ones. The food was delicious however there was slight confusion on what the difference between a steak being Medium Rare and Medium-Medium Well was. I found the atmosphere a bit dark but comfortable. With a reservation we ended up waiting 25 min but once sat our server was courteous and prompt. Would love to visit again but this time sitting at the bar instead of feeling a bit cramped at one of the tables. read more

Normally, I recommend Frog Hollow to everyone. However, not only was the receptionist utterly rude on the phone, but once we got our dessert (it was a cheesecake)... I can only describe the taste of it as vomit. I've never met a gourmet cheesecake that I didn't appreciate but it was the actual... taste... (no exaggeration) of puke. I never thought I would ever be caught dead saying this, however, I would rather have frozen Walmart cheesecake than to ever experience that again. Furthermore, their Gouda Mac and Cheese, which is my favorite meal on the planet, was burnt. And my husband's Shrimp and Grits was subpar. I think the chef may have had been dealing with a cheating girlfriend at home because this was just overpriced garbage and actually... I would have preferred eating real trash. We asked for bread for my granddaughters. Said we could not have it in the cocktail lounge. We asked for it to go and would pay for it. They still refused to give it to us. The manager told my daughter if it was her kids she would have had snacks for them. I couldn't believe she said that.
