I actually did not attend this restaurant myself because I live in California, however, my boyfriend lives in Augusta and I wanted to do something special for him for our anniversary even though I couldn't be there with him. I made a reservation here and called ahead to see if I could order ahead of time(if I just gave my boyfriend money to spend on food he would send it back to me and insist on paying himself) as well as pay with my card information over the phone. The lady who picked up the phone was so accommodating and helpful and let me pick out a 3 course meal for my boyfriend ahead of time so that when he got there everything would already be taken care of. WOW! My wife and I came in for Valentine's Day and had an absolutely fantastic experience. They start by seating you in the lounge while waiting for a table and give you a cocktail list while you wait. I had a unique Fernet and Bourbon based cocktail and the wife got an earl gray tea cocktail - both were wonderfully crafted and delivered promptly at a crowded bar. The service was fantastic. Even though the place was slammed, our server was very attentive and checked on us frequently to top off wine and water. We ordered the French Onion Soup, Simple Salad, Heritage Pork Chop with apple and sweet potato hash, pork shoulder with Mac and cheese and collard greens, and ended with apple crisp and crème brûlée. Every dish was better than the last, full of flavor and plated beautifully. Now, this is more of an upscale spot, but for what you pay, they FEED you. You will not go home hungry. We've paid much more for much less food. The higher dollar amount in this case does not mean scantily plated dishes with elf portions. While it's likely the "nicest" spot in downtown, and it did certainly feel like an elevated dining experience, it did so without feeling stuffy and imposing. Portion was minuscule too for $16... maybe two bites. 3) Quail appetizer was burnt and dry. 4) Crab cake entree came smothered by a literal mountain of arugula: literally couldn't even see the crab cake. What is the idea here? 4) Grouper entree dull and under seasoned; small portion swimming in a bowl of beans. 5) Brought wrong dessert and then insisted that a slice of cheesecake was a slice of peach tart. So many people raved about this place, I'm a big foodie so I had to try. Appetizers were amazing, we got fries with garlic aioli that were like an upgraded version of McDonalds fries ( they give you a ton of it too) and oyster that was a special that night, which were delicious! Drinks were well crafted and tasty...I mean we each got 3-4 throughout dinner if that tells you anything. Had to try the Mac and cheese since they have a unique version of it (lasagna style) and it wasn't bad, I think I prefer traditional Mac n cheese over it. The cowgirl steak which was humongous but it was a little burnt on the outside for me, otherwise they nailed the inside temperature. They take farm-to-table very seriously and each dish is high quality and locally sourced. If not from down the road, like some seafood dishes, they are quickly shipped from their destination ensuring the highest quality and freshness. Highlights include their pork shoulder, cowgirl ribeye, shrimp & grits, house cut fries + garlic aioli, duck breast, and Tea Hive cocktail. A seasonal specialty is their blue soft shell crab which is fried with rice flour and served in a different way each year (around end of March). I will say desserts are good but nothing I particularly crave. The goat cheese cheesecake is pleasantly refreshing and different. The rest of the menu is truly excellent. I live locally, and have frequented Frog Hollow over the years. It is the place we typically host our company's leadership gatherings, and a great date night spot. When of everyone everyone's favorite is the Gouda Mac and cheese. In our visit this past Friday, I had the Gouda Mac and Cheese and was very disappointed (that's a first). I am note sure happened, but the cheese looked and tasted processed. The flavor was very off, and the "Gouda was gone." Normally I would give this restaurant five star hands down, but not this visit. I made a reservation here to celebrate the holidays based on what I had heard about the place from my colleagues. The place itself is quite charming, and the wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I would say that I found the food a bit lacking, considering the hype for fresh farm to table and fresh seafood. I was hyped up by the wedge salad which had a great and fresh bleu cheese. Then we had ordered their unique mac and cheese which appeared like a mac and cheese lasagna. Unfortunately my main course failed to impress me. My bouillabaise was more dull than I expected, and the Striped Bass may have been overcooked and didn't taste fresh or flaky, it was almost waterlogged but still kept its form. The soup portion almost lacked full tomato flavor and was not to my expectation of a bouillabaise. I did get to try one of the diver scallops and it was well cooked but was missing the sear, maybe I had a slighly underdone one? The risotto underneath was quite boozy and may just not be for me. The vegetarian option the Harvest Farroto was tasty and probably the best thing I tried with a pleasant unexpecting apple for every few bites. Everyone else really enjoyed their cocktails and food and I enjoyed my time, but I guess I need to give it another shot when it's less busy to see what the food quality can be. read more

I had the Tea Hive cocktail and it was very tasty, though I thought it was a bit heavy on ice - I know that sounds silly, but I have nasty luck where the ice sticks together and I wind up wearing whatever beverage I have ordered. I had the pork shoulder with the mac and cheese, onion rings, and collards. My personal take is you don't really need the onion rings, and they weren't something that I'd go out of my way to order, but everything else on the plate was fantastic. I had a stellar dinner date with my sweetheart here this past Saturday evening. Parking is ample on the street and we made reservations, which I recommend. The spot is very popular, and it has an upscale, elegant ambiance. It's great for dinner dates and double dates. Some come for their anniversary dinners. The hostess was very accommodating and our waitress, Rebecca, was phenomenal. She was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and attentive to our needs. A seasonal small plate is the Watermelon salad, which was phenomenal. We shared it. They dry out pieces of watermelon education makes then sweeter and serve it in a delicious green salad of feta and arugula. It's amazing. I highly recommend it. I had the North Carolina Tilefish for my entree. It was delicious, meaty, and paired perfectly with the veggies. I loved it. I was too full for dessert but would like to sample in the future. What a sad way to treat your customers who have come into your establishment. Especially, when you had our table ready from the get go! Why?!? Just so unpleasant and not welcoming. This was the second time this has happened to me when I had a reservation at this restaurant. When I said something to the hostess this time, she said it was their policy. No apology, just that she couldn't help it....it was the policy of the restaurant. Okay...I certainly don't blame her, but I feel it is no way to start off a good review for a restaurant. No matter what the reasoning from the management is, as to why they have this rule, it doesn't send a warming welcome to your customer who has come to visit your establishment. Bad start! My family all enjoyed our meal, and our excellent service from Ben! He certainly helped us feel more welcome and we enjoyed that he knew the menu and any questions we asked about the food or drinks. We didn't have reservations but we at at the bar. We had very good service, for food we had the shrimp and polenta small plate which was good, the clams small plate, which was just OK. They have a good variety of craft beers. They have a large whiskey and bourbon menu. My wife had the wedge salad and I had the special Caesar salad which was pretty good. After our server presented us with the seasonal additions to the menu, I decided to try one of the dishes she mention. Also I ordered the small plate andouille sausage with organic grits. It reminded me of a perfectly cooked country sausage. I tried the seasonal crab cakes with arugula and peas salad with a lemon based dressing. The crab cake was nicely cooked and was more crab based which is always a bonus. I was not impressed by the salad. It was tart. The dressing may have been a contributing factor towards the tart taste or maybe it was created to taste like that. Definitely should have substituted the salad. My husband steak dinner was outstanding. The atmosphere and aesthetics are nice and great for the downtown area. Our server seem to neglect us constantly. The server didn't check in regularly and there was a lengthy amount of time where our party was sitting waiting for our checks. Customer service is the reason for the 3 star rating but I am definitely willing to dine again and recommend. Tips: Must make reservations. Dress code isn't adhere to. Why? Why do people eat here? I've been to this restaurant 4 or 5 times and I want it to be good each time. I come in with a positive mind set but am disappointed each time. The service is great, staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Drinks and wine list are also pretty great, but the food. The FOOD man. I don't get it. They have all the resources and abilities to be great but the decisions taken in the kitchen are just atrocious. Nothing is ever seasoned properly so that's pretty disappointing.. the flavor combinations also fall short. I'm all for innovation and creativity but it's just not working them. It's like they think oh yea pork and beans and let's throw in some over cooked scallops just for fun and call it new. Nah bro, you did the same plate with the same flavors 3 years ago and just made it worse. I scoured the area for fine dining and this restaurant seemed to rate well. I made reservations and was glad I did because it was packed on a Friday evening. My first impression was a immaculate, classy and trendy interior. The menu was short but the owner and chef focuses on farm to table so it can change often based on season and availability. We started with a broccoli bisque that was packed with depth of flavor and against my better judgment tried the eggplant fries. Let me say simply that I abhor eggplant and until this instance had yet to taste any product of eggplant that I would applaud. This was indeed an exception. Cleverly prepared and seasoned and paired with a delicious aoili and it was amazing. For the main plates we tried the Wreck fish and catfish plates. I have never had wreck fish and until this visit had never heard it referenced but it was enjoyable. A tad chewers than most fish but not over powering yet flakey. I was warned the fish tended on the ugly side in the water but that the favor was good. Paired with the fish were oyster mushrooms. Something I had never heard of or tried until this visit. Let me say that the mushroom were the star attraction of the plate. They had a consistency or oysters but a flavor profile that was so savory. I am certain the seasoning played a role but they are my new favorite shroom. I tried the Tea Hive cocktail. Like many of the other items the taste was unlike anything I have tried in the past. As I consider myself a foodie, finding so many new flavors was a welcomed surprise. The drink was mixed so well the taste of alcohol was almost undetectable. The restaurant was packed for the 2 hours I was dining. Our waiter was beyond exceptional. He was attentive, full of recommendations and knowledgeable in all the dishes and mission of the owner.
