Did CrossFit, SPENGA (spin, strength, yoga), Lagree, and went back to traditional gym workouts as well. Nothing ever really satisfied the same. After moving back to Cali a couple years ago, same thing. Did Lagree for a long time and love it but I missed powerlifting and the satisfaction of lifting heavy in strength training. I grew tired of traditional gyms especially with how crowded they get here. So I started looking for small group or personal training places. Lo and behold, I find MFitness, less than a mile from my house too. MFitness is a small, intimate and still mighty space with state of the art equipment. Similar feel to that gym I loved and miss in Colorado but more personal training focused at a price that still feels affordable. You get a lot with it too such as the nutrition coaching app Mike uses. I started out once a week and moved to twice a week after a few months. I've referred friends and family like my mom - bought her class packs as gifts and it's really invaluable and priceless to see her get stronger and feel more stable on her feet after recovering from a stroke. And it's fun to workout along side her. Mike will give us each our own unique workout each session. There is also an option to add on private gym access so I can come and workout on my own as well during their business hours. Lots of high techy features here as well like a very cool water machine with sparkling, flavors, and electrolyte options. And fancy door access through your phone that also helps you feel safe if you're there working out alone. Mike is great and will adapt workouts to your needs on the fly. I seem to be perpetually nursing a minor injury, so he always works around my needs. He is so easy to talk to and genuinely cares about every single person who walks in his door. Stephani, his wife, is also so sweet to work with and manages operations and scheduling. They are a dynamic team and it feels so good to support such family oriented businesses like theirs. I'm so glad to have found this new gym home and would highly recommend it to anyone looking. The evidence behind strength training is countless and it doesn't matter your weight or health status - you WILL improve your health and longevity long term. It's really the best investment. Coming from a family that lives almost forever (Grandpa died at 100) I had to imagine that if is the midpoint for me then I owe it to myself to make the next 50 as smooth as I can. I've always had a strong core, but for the past few years I've had more padding than was comfortable. I also knew myself, how much I love sugar, how I feel deprived if I can't have dessert every day! I found Martin Mapoma and he agreed to take on this 49 year old Cuban sugar-lover on a mission. I signed up for his 12 week program and committed fully, obsessively at times. BUT, rest assured, if he had told me to go down to zero sugar from day one I don't think I would have stood for it. He didn't do that. Instead, he had me send him photos of EVERY meal I ate. No judgement, but it was a requirement. And gradually I found myself following his directives. "Now, let's let go of the half-bagels." Ok, I can do that." Later, the nine-grain toast. And so on. Now, as I edge toward the close of my initial program with Martin, I do not eat a bunch of sugar every day, or every other day. I just don't eat it. And guess what, I don't miss it. But I will say again, it was not a zero to sixty situation. It was a natural progression. The strength training/stretching/HIIT elements of my work with Martin were also revelations for me. I followed instructions and teachings with curiosity and became fascinated with how my body/muscles operate. The fact that Martin does not work in a "shred every day and push yourself to death" fell right in line with the wisdom of my almost 50 years. I know not to push through pain if I want to keep doing something. I reserve the right to stop at any time. This mantra has kept me coming back to exercise because I require a humane approach. And that is Martin's approach exactly. It ensures longevity, which is why I'm doing this, right? I'm down 16 pounds so far, with muscle and tone that makes me giddy, did I mention that? I train in some way almost every day. I sleep more soundly. Migraines are a memory. Life should be enjoyed. Physical well-being is a gift we give ourselves. If you have your health you're a rich human. If you have a body that works but is weighed down by habits and inertia, I recommend investing in it/you.
