From Scratch is a food truck serving Serbian/Balkan food made from scratch by the Serbian chef. My favorite is Cevapi. It is a sandwich with four links of beef/pork meat sausages, Serbian cream cheese, special tomato sauce, red onion, cabbage, grilled red bell peppers (if you request 'everything'), in a home made Balkan bread. It is $11+tax but it is worth the money. I enjoy every bite of it. It comes with a small bag of potato chips. From Scratch usually comes to Tyson's on Mondays to operate from 11am to 2pm, but you might want to check their website before you head out just in case. read more

Ordered the ćevapi for lunch today. I remember having the same thing a few years ago. Balkan food is pretty novel to me. When's the last time you thought to yourself, "Let's get Balkan food?". I'm down if you want to go sometime. This food truck is delicious! The Ćevapi is a sandwich that consists of beef and pork sausages with a kajmak (creamy cheese spread) and a red sauce called ajvar (roasted pepper and eggplant mix). The bread is a cross between an english muffin and ciabatta. Amazing. It doesn't look like much, but the subtle flavors are great together. The portion is also not huge, but I think it's worth it. Mine came with a bag of chips. I didn't get to request a specific flavor, but the menu does indicate that everything is served with homemade buns and chips. If you see this brightly colored truck around your hood and want to try something different than other food trucks, I highly recommend it. read more

A great find! Ordered the Cevapi as well as baklava. The Cevapi was delicious, with the meat both juicy and with a nice snap. The stars of the show were the delicious roll (assume homemade) and sauces, namely the red pepper sauce. Baklava was delicious as well, nutty and not overly sweet. Lunch was a great value as well, with the sandwich priced at $11 (incl chips) and baklava for $2. Restaurant quality food for fast casual prices. I visited at the Dupont Circle/ Farragut Square stop, though the schedule varies. Definitely worth a try! read more

OMG this place is soooooo good! The cevapi is so good! It doesn't taste fatty. the bread pita is soooooo good like soft and fluffy with a slight chew;) the spreads on the cevapi are flavorful and work so well together. I could eat the pita with the spread and no meat and be satisfied. the baklava has a lemon flavor that makes it really good and refreshing. The other dessert was also really good with a thin chocolate layer on top. Now THIS is what I envision when I picture a high-quality food truck: From Scratch, baby! (It's like the anti-Yumpling! Check my other reviews if you need context for that reference.) If you know me and/or follow my reviews, you might know how obsessed I am with sandwiches and now I have the chance to try Balkan sandwiches! I tried the Ćevapi and it was delicious! It reminded me of a Middle Eastern kefta kebab, except with ground pork and beef (instead of lamb/beef) mini-kebabs (the size of breakfast sausage links) placed on this homemade split pita-esque roll with an awesome roasted red pepper/eggplant topping along with a creamy cheese spread. Neither over- or under-seasoned -- juuuust right. Perfectly satisfying. It also comes with a small bag of Route 11 chips, which is a nice touch! From Scratch is DC's diversity in the food scene at its best. The first time I went, there was a Serbian gentleman making a bulk purchase- I knew then and there this was a hit. Everything is organic, honestly made, authentic and carefully prepared. I have a hard time choosing which dish to order every week but will usually go for the specials because I enjoy the element of surprise, and it's delicious every time. You can never go wrong with any of the items on the menu, but my personal favorite so far would be the Cevapi (pronounced che-va-pi) and the salmon burger. Bread is freshly baked "from scratch" every morning and has the softest, most wonderful texture. Also, don't overlook the items at the end of the menu- the Burek (phyllo stuffed with cheese- how can you possibly go wrong with that?) and the baklava are wonderful as well. Definitely worth chasing after the truck to see where it is every day so you can work your way through the menu. Hands down five-star quality! read more

Wonderful! Service is great, food comes out fast and fresh what else could you ask for? Since I'm from the Balkan area I grew up eating ćevapi, pljeskavice(serbian burger) and burek all the time and these guys nailed it! And a baklava at the end hit the spot. If you never had food like this, this is a grest introduction to it. As a Serbian, I'm totally recommending this to my friends and I'm bringing my family if they visit this area. Quality of the hot dog was pretty good. I ordered it without mustard but regretted that decision because I didn't realize it would come plain without any other toppings besides radish. May have to try another item on the food truck menu next time other than the $9 hotdog that comes with chips. Owner is pretty attentive to his customers. read more

I've only had the cevapi and baklava both times I've eaten from this truck, but both are just excellent. The cevapi is tasty without being too heavy. The baklava is sweet, moist, and just the right portion and price. I ate there again today and, honestly, I've been excited since Tuesday knowing it was coming by today (Thursday). I'm from Eastern Europe (Serbia's neighbor Romania, to be precise) and this food truck hits all the right notes - both nostalgic and delicious in the moment. Perfect and cheap introduction to one of the world's great cuisines, sadly underrepresented in the DMV. Cevapi sandwich is the right size, easy to eat, not too dry, not too greasy. The spreads are smoky and tangy. Pairs well with the Slovenian orange soda (I forget the name). The whole business has the air of a true passion project, not the kind of hipster corporate hijacking of 'world' food and fusion nonsense you see so much of around here. I only wish I worked in downtown DC so I could visit more often! If the chef ever opens a brick-and-mortar restaurant I would be a regular customer. read more

Stopped here after seeing a sour cabbage role special that reminded me of what my mom use to make. It was quite delicious. The caliber of the food tasted much more like a high-end restaurant than a food truck. Also appreciated the nice bag and wooden utensils they provided -- just a nice touch. The Cevapi sandwich is out of this world, if your looking for something different from any ordinary sandwich. Also the salmon burger is great too, it's not dry. Like other salmon burgers you will get in restaurants. The flavors of both sandwiches are amazing with Serbian ingredients that will have your taste bud wondering and wanting more. Branislav, the chef is a really nice guys and take pride in his ingredient from his Homeland. He makes his bread fresh every morning which is amazing. Stumbled upon this food truck today. The salmon burger as delicious and not at all what I have come to expect from fish sandwiches or food trucks.
