Do not order from this restaurant even if your life depends on it. In the current COVID situation their lack of organization is astounding. This is a restaurant that should be out of business because their business model is the worst thing I've ever seen. Spent $100, waited for 3 hours, AND never saw the order. There were 50 people standing around in one room, waiting for over 3 hours for an order that they'll probably never see, spreading covid to every order that was being made and then set down in the same room. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in KC area. Good food, they accommodated our 5 year old requested graciously.

I want to start this review by saying that the food is really good. I've eaten here twice and have been really impressed with the food quality. That being said, their customer service is lacking. The first time we visited was for Taco Tuesday, and we loved it so much I wanted to take my mom when she was in town visiting. We decided to try the online ordering so we could pick it up while we were out running errands and bring it home to eat. They use Menufiy.com for their online ordering service. We selected the mixed chicken and steak fajitas and the tacos al pastor with extra guacamole (which we paid for) and refried beans. When we got to the restaurant, they had made us fajitas with shrimp and chorizo. We explained that we ordered the mixed fajitas, but they told us that we had ordered the wrong thing (even though my email confirmation showed that we had made the correct selection). They remade the fajitas for us, but made us pay for the more expensive shrimp and chorizo fajitas. This is on top of the $1.25 service fee for the "convenience" of ordering online. After waiting 20 minutes for them to remake our food, we got home to discover that they didn't give us any tortillas for our fajitas, no refried beans that had come standard with the tacos al pastor, and they left out the extra guacamole that we had paid for. I understand that mistakes happen, but I was surprised that they insisted that the mistake was our fault, never apologized, made us pay extra for a meal we didn't order, and then left out parts of our meal that we paid extra for. I'm so disappointed in the customer service, because I really wanted this to be our new go-to Mexican restaurant. I can only hope we caught them on a bad night, and we'll certainly give it another try, but I highly recommend eating in the restaurant or at least calling them directly to place a take-out order. The online ordering system (which is heavily advertised in the restaurant) did not work well for us. In summary: great food (if you get what you order), but poor customer service. I hope this improves over time! read more

First time here last night. We waited about 10 mins for a seat but I'm ok with that. A busy restaurant usually has good food. After we were seated we were greeted by some of the friendliest wait staff I've seen in town. The chips were thin and crispy af the salsa was smooth and tasty. I asked for some HOT and it delivered, twice. I had the pork platter and it was really good. Not the best I've ever had but 8.5 out of 10. The whole experience led to 5stars. read more

Honestly this restaurant doesn't even deserve one star. I went there with my boyfriend recently and I order the chicken and shrimp it tasted ok but after one taco I started to feel sick. My boyfriend's burrito came out cold and soggy so he didn't even eat his food we just paid and left. Not 10 minutes after we left I got horribly sick and everything I ate came right back up. I have never experienced that kind of reaction from food ever before in my life. I highly recommend NOT eating here. There are definitely way better Mexican restaurants out there but this one was hands down the worst I've ever been to. read more

This place had always been our favorite restaurant, but since the mother left- younger daughter? took over, south JoCo place burned down, and high server turnover has caused it to deteriorate. First they got rid of the alacarte menu (some of us just want a single taco without all the stuff with it). Tonight my kids were shocked and sad to not get their normal ice cream dessert after dinner (a regular theme for over 4 years). When asked about it the management acted like we were crazy -- when I told her we were just there 3wks ago, her response "oh yes, it's been about 2-3wks since stopped that". Terrible customer service. I asked if their Horchata had any cow's milk in it since 90% of Horchata's are just rice & the waiter said no. So my niece & I each order one. He brings them back & I take a sip & it doesn't taste right. I ask again "No cow's milk right?" He says wait & grabs it and runs away after I had a drink. After I explained I have a dairy allergy. He comes back with the manager & she says it has both cow's milk & rice milk in it. I ask for the bathroom so I can go throw up so I don't get really sick. I throw up come back & say we are leaving. The waiter said he was sorry and don't worry about the drinks, but the manager makes us pay for them before we can leave even through my niece didn't touch hers & mine one sip I had to throw up so I wouldn't get very very sick. I just moved to KC and recently joined my friends for their weekly Fronteras Fridays outing. I'd been there before when I was just visiting and the place does not disappoint. The food is good, nothing fancy, but the chips and salsa and drinks are where it's at! I had the house margarita on the rocks and my friend had the sangria. Both were super tasty. From what I understand, the owner of Frontera's and MiRanchito both came from the ranks of Jose Peppers. You can kind of see some similarities in the dishes they offer but in my opinion Jose and Mi Ranchito are both much better than this place. Plus this place is pretty dumpy looking. The salsa is bland but the chips are thin and crispy. Our waitress was downright rude. Acted really put out when we asked for a refill or when she came to take our order and we weren't ready. We have returned after being urged by a friend. Our last experience was fantastic. The food was fresh, delicious, and delivered quickly. We avoided the kids chicken fingers after our last experience and she enjoyed tacos instead. It was a busy Saturday night but they took our call-ahead reservation with no problem. Fronteras is legit Mexican food off of 77th and Quivira in Shawnee. This place is always crowded and frequented by regulars of the areas who are treated like royalty by the servers. The food is as good as you could find in Shawnee for Mexican food, and maybe even a 10 mile radius outside of Southwest Blvd. Some of the items still have the familiar "cooked in the microwave" feel of other Mexican restaurants, but the quality of the food is better than most. The fajitas are outstanding here but my barometer of Mexican food is the tamal (tamale is plural). Order one of the combos with a tamal or ala carte and you'll be pleasantly surprised. They offer both chicken and the more traditional pork variety. Moist, tender, corny, and delectable. Drink specials are usually pretty good too. They'll often have 2 dollar bottles or cheap margaritas. The service is a hallmark here - you'll always be well taken care of by an attentive server even on a busy night. Busy nights mean you'll have to spend 10 - 15 minutes waiting on the bar side. Have no fear, it's worth it. read more

Diggity dang! My roommate stumbled upon this apparent favorite. We had a free queso coupon so we came here on a Sunday night and left with a new favorite. In the middle of a strip mall, Fronteras is pretty unassuming. But the half hour wait at 8:30 on a Friday night shows that people who know about it, love it. Crazy Patron margarita specials. I love..LOVE the vegetarian burrito. Cactus Grill used to have a similar one but took it off the menu. Who knows why! Black beans--yum. What a great place. read more

Absolutely the best Mexican restaurant I have had EVER!!! I ordered this food for lunch at work, and let me tell you it was worth the money and the wait. I ordered the grande burrito, and it was super delicious. It was the perfect combination of spice, and oh so cheesy flavor. The chicken wasn't too dry like it normally is at other Mexican restaurants. The portion size was just right for a meal to fill me up(and I am a little on the heavy side not gonna lie). Yelpers mislead me here. I know Mexican food, culture, and language since I grew up in the bario of Kansas City (aka Northeast area). It's a dead giveaway that this place isn't serving authentic meals when I walked in. All customers were not Mexican or have any Spanish trace, but regardless it was busy which could mean they're doing something right so I sat down. The food was bland and Americanized as I expected, but I was willing to try any place once. This falls under my "once" category. Let me recommend a place that I really like. It's called Taco Express on Independence Ave. You know it's authentic when all the customers are Mexican and there are bullet holes on the windows. Relax, the shooting doesn't happen until the sun goes down. Step out of your sub-burbia comfort zone and eat where Mexicans are actually eating at. My co-workers took me there for a birthday lunch, and it's some of the best Mexican food I've had in the KC area. There's a huge difference between assembly line national chain Mexican and family run Mexican. Food was terrific, service was friendly and prompt, and the price was right. The waitress overheard that it was my birthday, and they brought out the most ornate sombrero for me to wear (and sadly have captured on everyone's cell phone camera) and did the usual embarrassing birthday song, but with a cool Mexican twist. We went on a Friday night after 8pm, when things were starting to die down. I have to agree with most everyone else and admit that the chips and salsa are excellent. The rest of the food was good. We all had burritos of one type or another. The service was not the best...had to request refills, which I hate! They told us that the ice cream dessert for our kids had melted from the freezer being opened too many times. Ok....how about offering a substitute when you're giving out lame excuses? First off, I want to say that the quality and flavor of food would put me at 5 stars. The food was fantastic. The customer service, however, was not good. I ordered delivery and was given an estimate of 40-50 minutes. After about an hour and 15 mins went by, I called to make sure my order was in its way. When I called, the employee said that they did not have a driver, and when I asked to speak to his supervisor, he hung up on me. I called back and eventually talked to the manager who told me the food was finally on its way. After 2 hours, I had lukewarm (but still delicious) food at no discount. I have been going to this location for a few years and enjoy the food. Last Saturday was my last visit here. Yelp and the door says they close at 11pm. They had 2 illuminated signs that said Open. As we walk-in just after 9pm we are greeted with a very rude "We are closed!" by one of the employees. We went to Margaritas across the street and we were treated great! We left Margaritas after 10pm and the open signs were still on. I might go to the Gardner location after a long break. read more

Barbacoa and Tacos al Pastor in the middle of Johnson County? Somebody pinch me. Their menu is filled with your typical joco mexican fare, but these two menu items really sets Fronteras apart. The barbacoa is absolutely melt-in-your-mouth perfect. The tacos al pastor are not exactly spot on, but would do in a fix. I have not seen a spit at Fronteras, so I'm not sure how authentic they are. You can taste the pineapple undertones, however, and that's good enough for me. Both these dishes are served with this amazing tomatillo sauce that has to have sour orange in it or something, because it is citrusy. Tomatilloly, citrusy, with just enough kick.
