We came here on a Saturday afternoon on Mother's day weekend and I really appreciated that they were able to accommodate our party of 8. The staff was super accommodating and helpful. We started with the complimentary chips and salsa and also got the blanco queso....so good. Our table got a pitcher of strawberry margaritas that was consistently put in our glasses by the staff. I try to limit my sugar so I got tequila on the rocks. It was a very nice pour. My husband got the taco salad, he liked it, especially the meat but we are a little bit of snobs because we are from TX and it didn't have rice or beans on it. They gave us some to add. My kid got the fajita nachos but she is simple so she really just wanted the meat, beans, and cheese. The staff was thoughtful and brought me her peppers and onions on the side. They were amazing. I got the chile relleno and they were really good as well and you got 2 so the portion size was nice as well. For Mother's day the staff also treated us to a free dessert. So it should be stated that I've been coming to this Jalepenos location since they opened in the 90s and I was just a little kid. That being said, I think for most people this is likely a four star spot, but for me, it tastes like childhood and you just can't give enough stars to emit that in a person. All of that being said, this is the OG Jalepenos location. There is another one in Brookside that I honestly love just as much, but this one is what started it all and for me, it defines tex-mex in KC. The strip mall that it's located in has an old west vibe, and is essentially unchanged since this restaurant opened in the early 90s. This established (since 1991) Mexican restaurant was running like a well-oiled machine during my dine-in lunch visit. It was a team effort. The hostess seated guests, the waiter took orders and served orders, another staff member brought chips & salsa and another staff member refilled salsa and bussed the tables. I did not wait at any point and yet I was not hurried. My complimentary thin & crispy chips with tasty medium salsa arrived just two minutes after I was seated, and the entrée arrived just seven minutes later. The burrito was generously sized and filled with moist, shredded, white chicken and beans. The side of rice was moist and tasty. The food is good, not great. Mondays are BOGO tacos. The place has been there for decades...nothing fancy, but they draw a good crowd. Service at the tables is good, but if you sit at the bar, and you're not a regular, you will be ignored and get terrible service. Bobbi has been there for years and still treats people like they are bothering her. I'm not treated as badly by anyone, anywhere. I don't understand how she's still there. I would never tolerate anyone treating customers the way she does. Theres not many seats at the bar, so it's not that busy (ever). The only way to capture more regulars us to give them great service and a reason to come back. It's too bad...I'd go there more if I wasn't always disrespected.Take out is good. I've heard so many glowing reviews about this place and know a woman that goes on a date every week with her here so of course I've been wanting to try it for over a year. Well. That day came to try it on a Saturday night. They do have tables blocked off so I'd say only half the restaurant is open. We were told it'd be a 20 min wait but I think it turned into about 30. When we arrived at our table - they already had chips salsa and water on the table. Felt kind of rushed in ordering when I told her it was our first time and she kept asking so I said I needed a minute and she finally got the hint. We ordered the wings with ranch and the white queso dip. Both were very good. The queso was a bit spicy but I liked the thickness of it. We split an enchilada combo with ground beef enchiladas and a ground beef taco with rice and Beans. Both of us weren't really impressed with any of it - as the ground beef was so diced it felt out everywhere and was all over the plate, table, and anywhere else other than the enchilada or tacos. Jalapeños is one of my favorite Mexican places to eat. It's close to home, the service is always outstanding, and the people working there are always very friendly. We like to eat a fairly early dinner, around 4:30, which will beat the crowd at this place. By the time we leave, the place is usually packed! I've been here couple of times and I do not understand the hype this place has. I know a family that religiously goes here every week and they were the ones that had me intrigued about this place. They have many meal choices and I will admit their crispy tacos are some of the best tacos ever. They are fried so they really aren't good unless you eat it at the restaurant. I got them once to-go and they ended up being too soggy to enjoy. I think their other meals like chimichanga, burritos, enchiladas, taco salads are just okay. I wasn't awed by their salsa or their queso. They do give you a lot of salsa and chips to eat while waiting for drinks and food. I would go here though if my friends wanted to go, but there are still many other Mexican restaurants for me to try in Johnson County. Jalapenos is a staple in South OP. Really love the food here, but the service is what makes it. They are really on it with the chips, salsa, water, refills, more drinks, etc. The service is top notch and really puts this place over the top for me. I like getting the jalapeno dip. As a long time diner at Margarita's( until recently- no longer a fan),I was a little weirded out at first.... I kept double checking our menus. Yep, they said Jalapeno's. I have crossed statelines now... Margarita's who?? The interior is super casual, and seems like the type of place to have regulars. The table numbers for seating are spoken over a loud speaker( bingo anyone?). The tacos? Light and crispy packed with flavorful beef. The salsa is a twin to the aforementioned restaurant's , but the hot salsa is where they differ. The chips and salsa are never allowed to run low, and the wait staff is prompt and super efficient. The long awaited Chicken Verde burrito was all hyped up, once a month special folks, and was pretty good. What is up with the potatoes in it?? Nope. The amount of food you get is well worth the tab. Ground beef trashy tacos from 1989 will blow the boots off of any chimichangas in Kansas city. The chips and salsa service is overly fantastic as they constantly fill your bowls will shots of salsa from a gun slinger's perspective. The chips are so paper thin that you can practically see through them. Charity will explain everything on the menu with a smile but she won't divulge the secret michilada recipe. Fideo Fridays are the best soup in town events. Everyone in here is connecting in a real American way, hugging each other and being so kind. The wait time is ridiculous but the GB chimichanga I had was much more authentic tasting than most. Ingredients were quality and there was actually flavor inside it. Service was good as well.chips and salsa were very good and kept full while we waited for entrees. One thing I didn't care for was that we were seated at the table to the very right of the host stand and people waiting were literally standing behind leaning on the two chairs we weren't using. Favorite Tex Mex in Overland Park. This time I got it to go for Sunday dinner. Next time I will post more pictures when I eat in. The servers and staff are super friendly every time I have gone. Sometimes there is a wait but it's because they get so busy. I have a favorites list that I rotate between: jalapeño dip burrito with beef, Monterey platter with shrimp, steak/shrimp fajitas, or chicken fajita salad - tip: use the salsa as the dressing! For appetizers and jalapeño dip is a must. The nachos or jalapeño poppers are both great. Be warned, the margaritas are strong and don't like it! It's easy to drink one quick. For me, it's worth the upgrade to patron since it makes it that much smoother. I have never ordered dessert because I'm so full by the end of the meal. Portion sizes are large. The food was good. Got queso dip with a bajan burrito and portions were good and the flavor was good. The wait for the food seemed right. The staff arguing was what made my visit less than favorable. When the male bartender is speaking unto his mic "if you have a problem with me deal with me" while standing 3 steps from me, then showing visible aggressive signs towards 2 female wait staff all while what I am assuming is a manager (mic'd but not in uniform) stood by and watched was uncomfortable.
