    Jalapeños Mexican Restaurant

Jalapeños Mexican restaurant. A southern JoCo institution. Frequent Flyers there are referred to as Peppers. Food is great, beer is cold, salsa is fresh, chips are warm, service is fast and friendly. You get why this place is so popular. I had the chicken burrito this last trip. Excellent.

The service was good. The food was not tasty. I ordered flautas. The chicken in the flautas didn't have any taste. The beans and the flautas had no taste. We also ordered the chilies reinó and it was smothered in cheese and beans. The price was very expensive.

We came here on a Saturday afternoon on Mother's day weekend and I really appreciated that they were able to accommodate our party of 8. The staff was super accommodating and helpful. We started with the complimentary chips and salsa and also got the blanco queso....so good. Our table got a pitcher of strawberry margaritas that was consistently put in our glasses by the staff. I try to limit my sugar so I got tequila on the rocks. It was a very nice pour. My husband got the taco salad, he liked it, especially the meat but we are a little bit of snobs because we are from TX and it didn't have rice or beans on it. They gave us some to add. My kid got the fajita nachos but she is simple so she really just wanted the meat, beans, and cheese. The staff was thoughtful and brought me her peppers and onions on the side. They were amazing. I got the chile relleno and they were really good as well and you got 2 so the portion size was nice as well. For Mother's day the staff also treated us to a free dessert. It was so yummy and big but I ate it all. Fried ice cream i. A little sopapilla shell with whip cream and a cherry. My family and I will definitely be back next time we are in town.

So it should be stated that I've been coming to this Jalepenos location since they opened in the 90s and I was just a little kid. That being said, I think for most people this is likely a four star spot, but for me, it tastes like childhood and you just can't give enough stars to emit that in a person. All of that being said, this is the OG Jalepenos location. There is another one in Brookside that I honestly love just as much, but this one is what started it all and for me, it defines tex-mex in KC. The strip mall that it's located in has an old west vibe, and is essentially unchanged since this restaurant opened in the early 90s. The same can be stated for the interior, while it's certainly been kept up, and is pretty clean, it still has a somewhat divey vibe to it, and looks and feels the same to me as it did the first time I walked through the doors. The ambience is exactly what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. This place is sparkling clean! The staff is very friendly and my waitress Becky is THE BEST. This was my first time here and it will not be my last. The food was EXCELLENT!!

This established (since 1991) Mexican restaurant was running like a well-oiled machine during my dine-in lunch visit. It was a team effort. The hostess seated guests, the waiter took orders and served orders, another staff member brought chips & salsa and another staff member refilled salsa and bussed the tables. I did not wait at any point and yet I was not hurried. My complimentary thin & crispy chips with tasty medium salsa arrived just two minutes after I was seated, and the entrée arrived just seven minutes later. The burrito was generously sized and filled with moist, shredded, white chicken and beans. The side of rice was moist and tasty. I noticed three dining areas and a bar with contemporary background music (not too loud) and several TVs. Overall, very nice!

Service was great. Before you even get to the table they've got your water, chips, and salsa ready to go. The food was really lackluster and had a slight chemical taste. Too bad, I liked the staff but I won't be going back

Great service. Their Jalapeño dip/queso was amazing. Wonderful salsa. My buddy had the naked burrito and loved it. I had their combo fajitas outstanding. Recommend starting with their Gold Margarita.

I've heard so many glowing reviews about this place and know a woman that goes on a date every week with her here so of course I've been wanting to try it for over a year. Well. That day came to try it on a Saturday night. They do have tables blocked off so I'd say only half the restaurant is open. We were told it'd be a 20 min wait but I think it turned into about 30. When we arrived at our table - they already had chips salsa and water on the table. Felt kind of rushed in ordering when I told her it was our first time and she kept asking so I said I needed a minute and she finally got the hint. We ordered the wings with ranch and the white queso dip. Both were very good. The queso was a bit spicy but I liked the thickness of it. We split an enchilada combo with ground beef enchiladas and a ground beef taco with rice and Beans. Both of us weren't really impressed with any of it - as the ground beef was so diced it felt out everywhere and was all over the plate, table, and anywhere else other than the enchilada or tacos. Service was great. Place was Clean.

Two chicken enchiladas, one chicken taco, black beans, and Mexican rice.

Secondly, when I went home, I was just expecting tacos, and found this wide array of grilled vegetables in my takeout order. Thirdly, several of the tacos were insanely delicious. Respectfully, nothing was fundamentally wrong with the food, but it didn't distinguish itself. I'd eat there again if nearby, but wouldn't travel for it. Service was good for ordering and receiving time. From order to table was approximately 10 minutes which is exceptional considering the quantity of food ordered. The tables needed to be wiped down, and the table service was pretty much non-existent. You order your food at a register, seat yourself and that's that. No waitress or water; you have to buy bottled water. Price point was ~$65 for the taco platter and another ~$10 for the quesabirria tacos. This filled up the family of 4 with leftovers. There is a condiments / salsa bar but customers ran through it and there was mixed food between all the containers. The pickled red onion has their own kick to it which I enjoyed and their salsas/hot sauces are good. The decor is pretty straightforward, tables and chairs, with typical music you'd expect from other Mexican restaurants. Futbol on the TV's and old movies on others. There is a chef at the opposite end of where you order your food, hats off to that man he was very receptive and worked very hard. He helped with getting our table wiped down, our waters, and to go stuff for our leftovers, if he sees this, I want him to know I appreciated his efforts. This review is for my first time experience in Overland Park. I do not know if this is normal or because it was a Sunday that this is what the experience is but I will say, If they offered free water, had a busser, and kept the place more tidy it easily would elevate the rating.

The service was okay! Nothing super special but they answered questions and were helpful at the counter. This was our first time here so we ordered a few things to sample and share amongst ourselves. The first thing we had was the chips and queso, which I thought was a bit expensive at $7.99 but not too bad. The queso was fairly spicy but otherwise nothing special. I usually love queso so it surprised me how neutral I felt toward it! The chips were good, thin and light with a crispy bite to them. We unfortunately didn't get to try the salsa, noticing only at the end of our meal that there was a sauce bar near the counter! The birria tacos were also...okay. They were very juicy but not very uniquely flavored compared to everything else we tried. The meat was tender and I loved the texture of the tortilla, but didn't care for the massive handful of cilantro dropped on top of everything on the plate. The dipping liquid (birria sauce?) was alright! It was the same flavor as the tacos themselves so it didn't add much, but it definitely wasn't bad. The "main course" of what we ordered was a combo of soft chicken tacos, rice, and beans. The chicken tacos were unfortunately very cold by the time we got them which was a bit strange, as almost everything else was hot! They tasted good but I'm really not a fan of eating cold chicken, so I passed them off to my friends. The beans were just okay. There's really not much to say about them. The rice also left me disappointed! I typically devour Spanish rice. Not only was it cold, there were also odd, hard grains of rice mixed in. Not enough to get one every bite but enough that the experience of eating it was off-putting. It was also quite bland. Another note: While we were eating, there was this constant loud droning coming from the air conditioner. I'm a MASSIVE fan of air conditioning so I'm grateful it was on in the first place, but that is something they really need to get fixed. Two women seated near us actually got up and walked outside after commenting multiple times about how disturbing the noise was. My experience here was definitely a mixed bag but it leaned toward the positive, so we'll likely try them again! They had several other menu items I'd like to try, including some American fare that I found intriguing.
