Outside of Washington state and the Pacific Northwest, a lot of people know Gonzaga University…read morebecause of its men's basketball team. The Bulldogs have become a fixture in college basketball. However, the school's history as a national contender didn't begin until the late 1990s. This is opposed to college basketball's blue bloods whose histories run decades deep. Gonzaga's first NCAA tournament appearance wasn't until 1995 and they've been to every NCAA tournament since 1999. That sort of consistency, even dominating in a mid-major conference, is impressive. Mark Few has been the head coach of the Zags since the 1999-2000 season. As a head coach, he's never missed the NCAA tournament. Even the sport's greatest coaches, from Mike Krzyzewski to Jay Wright, have missed the Big Dance on occasion. Not Few. Few, who graduated from Oregon, has been with Gonzaga since 1989 when he worked as a graduate assistant. He's only 58 and he's already led the Zags to two national runner-up finishes, 17 WCC Tournament championships, and 20 WCC regular season championships. Given how deeply-rooted he is to the area and how successful he's been, I don't see him leaving Gonzaga until his retirement. Gonzaga stands out in a conference - the WCC or West Coast Conference - that's otherwise lackluster. To the WCC's credit, the conference is made up of 10 private, faith-based universities. Eight of the 10 schools have enrollments of less than 9,000 each. One can't help but wonder if playing in the less-competitive WCC has hurt Gonzaga. There's no question Gonzaga has grown into one of college basketball's elite programs, but they've come up short in winning the national championship, ultimately losing to programs from major conferences (e.g. North Carolina in 2017 and Baylor in 2021). The Zags play in the on-campus, 6,000-seat McCarthey Athletic Center (MAC). It opened in 2004 and is the WCC's third-largest basketball arena. Campus parking is free on weekends and after 5pm on game days. Public parking lots include the MAC South Lot and the BARC campus parking deck, located one block north of the arena. Notable Gonzaga alumni to play in the NBA include John Stockton, Dan Dickau, Ronny Turiaf, Adam Morrison, Kelly Olynyk, Domantas Sabonis, Zach Collins, and Rui Hachimura. Stockton and Morrison's jersey numbers were retired by the school. Jalen Suggs' game-winning buzzer-beater in Gonzaga's 2021 Final Four classic against UCLA has become one of the greatest moments in March Madness history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx3LuhZOFn8.
