Then, we went back near the end of our trip to get a few more! They were sold out, but there's a number to call and the baker's husband brought out a few piping hot loaves of bread. Wow!!! It's even more amazing when it's hot. I do a lot of baking and I make a lot of banana muffins, and even I'm impressed with Jeanette's skill. The bread is perfectly caramelized on the outside, the sprinkle of crushed mac nuts and sugar on top, with the moist interior is just perfect. Our kids were fighting daily at breakfast for the "end pieces", lol! We'll definitely be back someday! Mahalo!

The loaves are topped with a sweet topping containing macnuts that make it unique and better than the rest. It's moist and flavorful, definitely one of the best banana breads I've had while visiting the Hawaiian islands. It's also super affordable at $4 per loaf. You pay via honor system through Venmo. When we arrived around 6:15pm, there were no more loaves in the cooler but there were a few phone numbers with a note posted on the cooler that said to please call if there were no more loaves so they can bring some up :) The owners are super kind and happily brought up some more loaves so we can purchase some. I think they said they filled the cooler with 52 loaves before they left for the day! I don't have a picture of the loaves because we ate them so quickly but just trust me when I say this is a must stop and you won't regret it!

The road was narrow with many turns, but it worth the drive. Received warm welcome from Tara after parking on the ground floor. While talking about their move from New York and their works in Hawaii, we were joined by Ed on the upper level. He talked about his visions to keep and operate this coffee farm in all-nature ways to keep certified as organic. Even with some diseases on the tree roots, they used the nature and sustainable methods to control possible spreading and to treat the bacteria. The tasting was then hosted by Jessada. He explained from the volcano's contributions, tree growing, coffee cherries, hand picking, washing, fermenting, drying, grading, roasting, and more. They even separated those fancy peaberries! We were able to enjoy both freshly milled and brewed medium and dark roasted coffees. Those were our youngest family member's first ever coffee! He also talked about growing and caring turmeric. We bought multiple packs of their coffee beans and one pound of turmeric to go. We then walked about their farms and also saw papayas, bananas, avocados, and other tropical fruits. The entire visit was highly professional, knowledgable and educational! We received warmest welcome from Tara, Ed and Jessada.

Don't let the slick website fool you. This is a mom and pop, 2 people with an idea/dream who made it a reality. If mass market produced, easy parking and quick stop with bathroom is your vibe, this ain't it. I made my reservation on the website, we received a confirmation, and a text with directions, my maps app did just fine. We had a late start and since it was a Sunday and not overbooked Ed way kind enough to say still come we will see you when you get here. The turn off was easy to miss, and the road up the hill is not for the timid driver- we did fine in our rental sedan going slow, but an suv, our something with higher clearance would be more forgiving. The roads are local and small, be polite and use pull outs for letting other cars by. The pay off is views of the coast, the mountain, coffee - blossoms, berries and picked trees. It is other worldly in an agricultural Willy wonky way. Then you arrive... Ed met us on the road and directed us to park in his carport. It is a home, with an in basement tasting room where you discover the magic Ed and Tara have been brewing. Ahem. We sampled a medium and dark roast. I will state for the record I am no coffee snob. I don't know enough about coffee to have opinions. But the coffee we had today was other worldly good. I think it was pour over style in this cool contraption that reminded me of an ice cream cone holder with sample cups collecting the coffee below. Ed heated the water to 174 precisely. He amiably chatted about his family's story and what a designation of Kona Coffee means. Small batch hand processed coffee is special and comes with an expensive price. As I stood in the farm basement, which is a cluttered mash up of tools, farm equipment, packaging materials and bags of beans- this is a labour of love and inspiration. The coffee was hands down the best I have ever had - European, African, Costa Rican- nothing tastes like Rooster Farms Kona. It is like tasting the island aloha in a cup. We bought 3 bags for $100. We will make that last long time, and fun fact, they offer mail order so replenishing is possible. The tasting is free. Walking the grounds allowed, but no formal tour. Bottom line: Authentic, sincere, and an amazing cup of true Kona coffee. Off the beaten tourist path and a real experience. 10/10 no notes.
