The restaurant was recommended by our tour guide, so we gave it a try. It was over crowded when we went in. None of the waiters were friendly. We decided to sit outside, but because it started to drizzle, we went inside. We paid for our drinks outside and brought them in with us. The waiter was not friendly. Asked if we had paid for our drinks, I said we paid outside. I'm not sure if he believed me. When he finally came to take our drinks outside order, he seemed irritated with us. We got our drinks and order our meals. Our meals arrived very quickly and everything was wonderful. However, upon closing our bill, the waiter got very angry with me saying something about good service and no tip. We are literally in Germany where you don't tip. It's a cool place to see, but I'm not sure I would go back. read more

Wonderful experience! The place is HUGE! Discovering many levels and rooms, this place is very deceiving from the outside. The food was great. FRUH am Dom was high up on my list to visit as it is one of the most well reviewed bars and restaurants in Cologne. I stopped by for a late lunch on a Sunday. Located close to the iconic Cologne Cathedral, this traditional German restaurant is centrally located. Ambiance (4.5/5): This is one of the areas where FRUH shines. It's a beautiful restaurant with large windows and wood on the walls and the seats. And a big restaurant at that. My only complaint? The typical American one. No A/C so it was a little toasty in June. Service (4/5): This visit exceeded my expectations for European service. Not the most friendly but it was efficient. Right when my beer was close to empty, the waiter would arrive to ask if I wanted another. The attentiveness was appreciated. Drinks (4.5/5): Another good reason to go to FRUH. Like other German restaurants in Germany, beer is the way to go. And Kolsch is the most popular style in Cologne. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. So that's exactly what I did. The beers are served in small glasses and the waiter will make a tick mark on your coaster when he brings you one. That way, once you're done, he just counts up the tick marks. I only had two but things can easily multiply if you've trying to turn up. Food (2.5/5): This part of the experience was a little deflating. I started off with the meatball appetizer which is one large meatball. Unfortunately, it was dry and flavorless. German cuisine isn't known for it's zest but I've had meatballs from many different countries and this was at the bottom. I then had the Rheinischer Sauerbraten which is braised beef in a raisin sauce with almond flakes served with two potato balls. Unfortunately, it looked better than it tasted. The sauce was solid but the meat needed some seasoning. Same with the potatoes. They had a jelly-like quality to them which isn't something I've ever experienced with potatoes. It's safe to say that FRUH Am Dom is somewhere I would go again for the drinks. They also have a store next door where you can buy souvenirs and various knick-knacks. Prost! read more

What a great experience. We happen to be staying at the hotel next-door, which is part of the same brewing company. We opted for this brewery, as it was very close, obviously. Plus, it had started to rain pretty heavily, and it was a very easy walk. We were warned in advance, about the method of serving you more beer, without asking. We figured it out pretty quickly, but the beer was so good. We just kept letting it come to the table. Our server was amazing, with immediate and awesome service. He was very engaging, and very entertaining. The ambience of this place was loud, boisterous, fun. We really enjoyed that aspect of it. I think we were on the Oktoberfest, and the place was packed. Food was good. Service was surly. We were two American women in for early drinks and dinner. We were seated quickly at a table for two. Waiter asked us for our order and brought English menus when it became clear we did know German. He grumbled at this and while taking our order, but this seemed to be his style. We saw the same treatment of two men at the next table who also did not speak German or much English. We ordered a kolsch (which we understood, and observed at other tables, would be refilled until you cover the top with your coaster) and a white wine and a bottle of water to share. All delivered promptly. We ordered the Wednesday special (grilled ribs, potatoes, Cole slaw) and Spaetzle. These were not delivered at the same time. But, the food was decent. (We have had better.) Had to ask for refill on the wine. Never got a refill, or offer of one, on the beer, even though people at other tables were brought beer refills without asking. Waiter ignored us until we asked (twice) for the check. Needless to say we did not leave a tip, thus probably reinforcing a stereotype that women are stingy tippers (not true for us when we receive good service). My recommendation? There are better brew houses. We had great service and food experience at Augustiner the night before. read more

This is a fun place to visit when you arrive in Cologne. It was recommended to us by a friend who visited often. We stopped in for dinner. Service was pretty slow and the waiter returned to our table twice to ask what we ordered. But, we rolled with it and enjoyed the ambiance and people watching. The food was ok but the experience was fun. I ordered a glass of wine and my husband the beer. They keep replacing your glass of beer whenever it is empty. BAR - 3 stars - Went to the bar and had several drinks. The wait staff was attentive. When we asked questions to learn about the brewery he took the time to answer them. Went on Sunday afternoon and was rather noisy, but not bad. Been to Scotland, Ireland, England,and many others in US. And nothing about this one really stood out! FRUH SHOP- NEGATIVE 10 - THIS isn't a shop, it was buyers remorse!!!! The male kid didn't want to be there and found doodling more interesting then helping cutomers. During check out I had bouught 7 glasses which I knew would be wrapped. Another customer had a small purchase but didn't have her credit card and had to go retrieve from her husband. By the end the kid had wrapped everything and mixed the orders. HE kept placing her stuff in front of my husband and of course my husband thought it was ours and kept trying to put it in the bag. Instead of using complete sentences and communicating he started yelling "NO" but kept putting it in front. I moved it to the side and the boy immediately moved it back and again it almost ended up in our bag. He yelled again NO! My husband finally snapped back if it is not MINE quit putting it in front of me!!!! Bottom line don't send a boy to do a man's job of customer service. The whole ordeal made me regret purchasing 100 € worth of merchandise. I will not recommend nor ever go back to this bar or shop. In fact I don't even want too as this ordeal which should have been fun and memorable made us both upset by incompetent employee! read more

Our first challenge was simply getting a table. Just pick any open table that doesn't have a 'Reserved' sign on it... except there didn't seem to be any such. One of the waiters took pity on us and found us a table: bless him! The potato soup was disappointing, mostly since we had a superb one just a day or two before. The (special) mushroom creme soup was better. I had the Brauhauspfanne, a chunk of each of three meats along with whipped potatoes and sauerkraut. Quite filling but not particularly impressive. My wife had the jaegerschnitzel, and wasn't thrilled. (It wouldn't be until Vienna that she found a schnitzel she liked.) We ended with an ok apfelstrudel. The ambiance is nice, very gemuetlich, warm. Service was good. I found out later that this place is considered pretty touristy. While there were other tourists there, it certainly didn't seem majority-tourist, and seemed to have an authentic feel to it. This restaurant is so massive you wouldn't believe if I told you the amount if dining rooms they have. Somehow seemlessly they knew exactly a table in the very back of restaurant that would fit. Great attentiveness to service . Food was top notch and came rather quickly but not rushed. Refills on beer were spot-on. It was my first time in Koln and I tried the (Hammchen) pork knuckle. Excellent - especially since I didn't know what it was - it was a big portion for myself. I did try the Cologne Caviar- another first.. I could have used a sharper knife to cut it. It was served with onions ( very very tasty ; not strong in flavor) a rye roll , butter and mustard. To me the mild was mustard but well balanced. Last but not least- apple strudel . Since this was my first time in Germany- I'm trying lots of food that I will not be able to get back home in Florida - and giving it my best shot on trying apple strudel throughout my vacation. Yes!! My first Kölsch stop off the train from Belgium, so good and fun. The location is right smack dab in Alstadt, 1 block from Köln Hauptbahnof and next door to the Cathedral. The beer was fantastic, the Jäegerschnitzel was delish and the service was impeccable. I ended up getting a room for a couple of nights in their hotel, in the same building, I got the breakfast included, that was top notch buffet style. 'Ello chaps! Talk about Germany vibes. FRUH offers it all. Located in the shadow of the Cathedral of Cologne, the restaurant boasts expansive dining rooms, each inspired by authentic Germany traditions and architecture. For visitors, it's important to know that not every restaurant is different when it comes to seating. Some you wait to be seated by staff, others, like Fruh, you simply walk in, roam around and sit at any table you'd like -- with the exception of those with 'reserved' signs. To this point, it's very common for restaurants in Germany to hold tables for reservations, so while they may be empty, they may not necessarily be made available. That said - great vibes at this restaurant, once you figure out how to seat yourself. The staff wasn't the most accommodating with helping to figure this out. The menu features a robust amount of options for traditional German fare, from schnitzel, to bratwurst, to meatballs, salads, and more. Note: Tap water is not free in every restaurant. The other downside an American tourist may find in Germany restaurants, including FRUH, is the pacing is much slower post meal. Food comes out FAST. Very fast. However, once your meal is served, rarely will a Germany server check back in to make sure everything is OK, and often when you're down, you have to wait - and wait - and wait - or try to track down your server to get the bill. That was the experience here, and at most of the restaurants we visited in Germany. Overall I give FRUH four stars out of five. read more
