First place me and the bruv stopped for a meal in Germany and it absolutely slapped. Much needed after a long journey. I got the best and first schnitzel of my life and I'm not being dramatic when I say it was a complete game changer. Crispy as you like with that creamy peppercorn gravy poured over top. I had a side of chips that soaked it up perfectly. Could have shed a tear right there at the table. Washed it down with five Kölsch on the spot. Ended up drinking about thirty throughout the day while walking around the city like a legend. Started early and never let off the gas. This meal brought me back to life. We popped in for a lunch after a morning of touring! We found the ambience to be your typical German brewhouse and restaurant. Restrooms were clean and easy to find. Our food was delicious. There were no complaints at all! The potatoes are absolutely to die for. Strongly recommend the Wiener schnitzel and bratwurst. The potato latkes with applesauce were also equally delicious. Warning! Vorsict! We had lunch here which is your standard German fare.I ordered the sausage with potatoes which was decent, potatoes were dry. There are so many restaurants on the square, I would definitely seek those out and avoid this restaurant. Service was ok. Beware of the older lady with the pony tail. I read a review and I didn't pay heed to his warning. She took my credit card and then asked me for a PIN number. I told her it was a credit card, she said it needed a pin. So I gave her another credit card same thing. Then we had to go inside with a debit card and pin. The whole thing seemed very sinister. Are they stealing pins? After I stopped at a shop and bought water with my card and no pin needed. In fact this is the first time in all my travels to Europe that I needed a pin for a credit card. The waiter was prompt yet seemed overwhelmed, if he saw we have too many questions he's say he'll come back in a few minutes. Fear not he always came right on time. We got 4 Venne schnitzel that came out in less than 10 minutes. These were perfectly cooked, tender and the right amount of seasoning. One of them had a mushroom sauce that was again super tasty, not too salty and a nice addition to the meal! They only have the pork schnitzel but it's some Of the best I've had! Well done! This brewery has a more contemporary atmosphere than most found in Cologne . There are multiple levels,a beautiful bar in the basement and a terrace facing one of the main squares. We enjoyed our food with a few glasses of delicious Kolsch. The smoked pork chops were yummy and I could have easily shared my big plate. For dessert, the Apple Strudel served with vanilla sauce was delicious. Like in all the breweries we visited in Cologne, the beer comes in a small glass and they'll bring you more until you put your coaster on top of the glass to let them know you are done. They keep track of the number of drinks you've had with a mark on the coaster. Cool and efficient. Service was friendly and we had a very pleasant dinner! read more

A guy who looked like he loved to eat (like me) sat next to me on a bench in Cologne. In my best broken German, I struck up a conversation with this friendly local. I asked where I should eat and he told me to try this place. I am so glad I was brave enough to start talking because Gilden im Zims was authentic and yummy! We were seated on the bottom basement floor which had oodles of ambiance. In fact, it was so very quiet and secluded that we started to think that we were dumped in the "tourist annex." I'm happy this wasn't the case as the room began to fill up with boisterous locals as the night went on. The atmosphere is really cool, especially in the basement. Thick, rock-lined walls and dim lighting really sets the mood, while long tables (probably meant to be semi-communal) add to the open atmosphere. We were given small menus in German (thankfully I had my trusty Rick Steves translation dictionary handy) and I opted to order from the special winter seasonal menu. I went with the creamy cabbage and bacon soup and my hubby ordered some fried potato and egg dish. We shared some sausages with potato salad. That potato salad was amazing! Germans know how to properly cook potatoes in all of their forms. Yum Yum YUM! If you like beer, this is a great place to drink some tasty brews. The coolest part? You get a pencil so you MARK HOW MANY BEERS YOU CONSUME ON YOUR COASTER and at the end of the night, you simply hand the coaster to your waitress and she charges you for what you drank. This was an absolute treat. We tried to get into a restaurant at the square but was fully booked so I yelped and found this place close by. What a great find. We were seated in the back in like a German bier hall setting. The food was absolutely amazing. The best sauerkraut I ever tasted (not so Sauer). Really great. We had the salmon (nice and fatty smoked) Then the fried and the stewed knuckle (very good and very big). Finally the 1/2 kilo bratwurst. This came with baked potatoes with bacon bits. So good!! We could have easily only gotten 3 or maybe 2 dishes to share between the 4 of us. And we didn't have appetizers either (normally we do). At the end the our server knew we were tourists and said "tip still needs to be added. How much?" You do not tip in Germany. She was praying on us because she knew we do tip in our culture. I have been coming here every time I come to Cologne (which is once a month or once every other month)since my brother in law introduced me to this place a couple years ago. It is a massive old brauhaus with many floors and areas to drink and dine. It is a gorgeous place and definitely reminds you that the brauhaus was the center for social life. The beer here is also one of my favorite Kölsch brews. I try to mix it up every time I go and try different things on the menu. My favorite is the schweinshaxe (roasted ham hock) but last night I had the "one pound" bratwurst with home fries and a side salad. Do not get the one pound! It is enormous and just too much for one person. The home fries here are done with chives, onions, and speck (Germany bacon) - they are the best potatoes I've had in Germany. I asked for their dark brown gravy which goes perfectly with the home fries. Depending on when you go and how crowded it is, you will get a different experience. I suggest going for dinner and showing up hungry. Try everything in the appetizers menu and get a smaller portion of one the entrees. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would! We decided to eat indoors since it was pouring raining outside. The table was clean and that's where the positivity ends. Our waiter (Olaf F.) was BEYOND rude! We were taking off our soaking wet rain jackets and were approached by him saying something about Költsch but I couldn't make out anything except for the number 2 and hands us two menus. He came back seconds later and says something to the extent of you need three and I just responded that we can share and it wasn't a big deal. At this time, we all take our seats (it's 3 of us) and the waiter comes back with 3 beers. We proceed to tell him that we didn't order any beer and we wanted Fanta's. He then responded with "why didn't you say that; I asked you twice" and walks off with one of the beers. He came back a little while later with one Fanta. My mother then explains to him that we do not want the beers and to please bring another Fanta and one Coke Zero. He gives us another rude comment, takes the beers and brings us the other two sodas. I tell him that we are ready to order and he ignores me and walks away. He comes back about 10 minutes later and we place our food orders. When the food is brought to the table, a gravy is missing along with two side salads . They brought us the gravy after we asked but no side salads. We ate the food but I have to say that the gravy was the worst I ever had, the schnitzel tasted like a frozen schnitzel and the fries were mediocre. When the bill came, my mother called him over and told him that the check wasn't correct because we didn't get the side salads. He refused to take anything off of the check and became very combative! Never in my life have I ever experienced such a lack of service and food that I wasn't happy with in Germany. The young man that cleared the table off was such a nice young man (shaved head) and I wish he could have been our waiter. I went to this place after reading a lot of the reviews here and I definitely didn't regret it. The food was great, the place was clean and the wait staff were absolutely delightful. Patient, helpful and they even helped me with my somewhat broken German. Food quality is also good, which might explain why there are so many locals around, and they definitely keep an eye on your Kölsch levels, but they definitely don't force them on you. While I was here I tried the Sauerbraten and the pork knuckle, both of which I thought were fantastic. I came here last night for dinner with a group of 6. Good thing we had a reservation cause the front desk had to turn people away when we arrived since it was already packed at 6pm. I had the Rumpsteak (250g) with fries and a side salad. I tried to order it medium-rare but was told that they don't do that and I could only choose between "bloody, medium and well done". Hearing didn't make me happy but what can you do. I went with medium and hoped for the best. Luckily, the steak turned out pretty well. It was a good cut, not chewy and well seasoned. Quite enjoyable after all. The fries and the side salad were tasty as well. I found out later though that they are charging 1,80 € extra for mayo & ketchup. That's ridiculous. Our son had ordered the kids spaghetti with tomato sauce. He liked it, but the portion size was really pretty small. The service was friendly, but you need to be aware that they are placing small glasses of beer in front of you without asking and they will just keep them coming as well once your glass is more than half empty. So keep an eye on it or place a lid on top of a glass to signal that you are done. Overall, I liked the place since the food quality was good and the service quite nice, but there is definitely room for improvement in certain areas. read more

We were greeted by very friendly servers who served us some Kolsch promptly. Their menu if helpful as if you reverse it- it is in English. I was a bit sick of big meat dishes that come with potatoes and sauerkraut so I begged my fiancé to let us get some small plates to share [this might be against German custom but our waiter didn't give us grief about it]. Hard to have a bad latke but these were flavorful and had a great crunch. I'm a pretzel aficionado and have eaten my fair share of pretzels. This one was definitely at the top. It came out warm and with butter on the side. Although I thought pretzels were perfect as is, it turns out you can make pretzels even better by adding a little bit of butter to them! The meatball came out looking like a giant hamburger patty so I was a bit skeptical but it tasted amazing! Flavorful and moist. The salad was the surprise hit. Neither of us are salad people but the description on the menu sounded so good that we had to try it - and it didn't disappoint. My fiancé described it as being the antipasti dish that he wished all other antipasti dishes were. It was light but packed with flavor. Although I'm not drinking right now [currently pregnant] my fiancé can attest to the fact that the beer was flowing all night. As soon as he finished his he had a nice cold full one in front of him. The waiter was very friendly and casual with us, which we liked. He spoke English and they had English menus which made communicating and ordering very easy. The food was a bit slow to come out - not sure if this was because our waiter forgot to put in the order (he came back a couple times to ask if we wanted to order food after we had already ordered food) or if it was because the place was pretty busy.
