    Lentil soup

My daughter and I visited cologne from the US (we are Asian) and she researched to have lunch at this restaurant. We walked in asking for table for 2 and the 1st lady server just replied "seat anywhere" and left. So we found a seat towards the end of the restaurant. This place is very popular and busy. When the 2nd lady server started speaking to us in German, we asked if she speaks English. She replied rudely "NO!" and gestured us to look at menu and walked away! So we had to point at the items on the menu to communicate with her. We ordered the lentil soup and the truffle pasta which turned out great. Upon paying my bill, the same lady who claimed she couldn't speak English suddenly asked if I want to tip her 5% or 10%.. in English (no option for no tip. I'm not sure if it's because we were paying by credit card because I didn't see her asking anyone for tip. This was our 4th day in Amsterdam and Germany and no restaurant has asked us for tip! To think that we had to tip for such lousy service was ironic Food was good but will never return... if we ever come back to visit this place again!

i always eat one or two meals. it is classic german food. and affordable. never mind that tourists stop in. they do not linger. the service can be iffy, even rude. be forewarned.

    Incorrect breakfast times...

Their website says they serve breakfast until 11:30 pm....They do NOT.... it's 11:30 am. When I asked for the breakfast menu at 12:30 pm, he said no breakfast. I told him the website says 11:30 am.... His response... "Who had breakfast until 11:30 pm?"...

Why it's good: + great location. It's right in the market square by the cathedral. We went on a tour and was then able to have lunch there. + Great outdoor seating area....but that's like all European places. + they take credit card! + Food was really good. they had a large and varied menu. Some of us got a salad, some got pasta, and no matter what we got, it was all very delicious. Pricing was reasonable for the food we received. + English translation is already on the menu right under German.

If you are none white or black: this is the place for you. If you are Asian; this place is racist as it could be. Would not be back

This place is no good. Service is Terrible and waiters will make racist comments to your face. Unprofessional

Nice restaurant... had the veal it was fantastic. Gin tonic was also very good. Service was good.

They have caffeine free coffee! And soymilk! €3 for both. €2.10 for a croissant... And it was burnt.

Came here for a light breakfast this morning. Coffee, availability of caffeine free coffee and soymilk, and servers' uniforms were good! Too pricey though, really; & the croissant, which was eight times the price you can buy it for by yourself at a grocery store's bakery, was burnt.

Goulash Spatzle – yes, get it! You won’t be sorry.

During our recent trip to Germany we stopped over in Cologne. We stepped out of the central railway station (Koln Hauptbahnhof), and bam! The Cathedral was right there, in all its glory. And just a block or two away, we found Funkhaus Café. This recently renovated stylish café offers a variety of salads, sandwiches, and classic dishes along with cakes and pastries. Dora here. Don't forget breakfast and coffee! Just look at this place. Not many people sitting inside because the weather's so beautiful! Try to spot my guy in the next picture. See him? Back to Ernie...Since I had a large lunch, for dinner I ordered Lentil Soup with smoked duck breast. Outstanding, with the lentil being cooked just enough to have a little bite but not mushy, and the thinly sliced duck breast was tender, tasty, and the perfect accompaniment to the soup. This was just the right dish to end a very busy day. Dora here. The Goulash Spätzle was calling my name. Rather loudly. :) Doesn't that look oh-so-yummy? Well, my friends, it was! My first time ever eating Spätzle, and those noodles were so buttery and soft, the meat so tender...I want to go back to Cologne just for the goulash! And to gasp at that stunning cathedral. Oh, let's not forget about the ice cream! Check this out. We capped off an awesome day with ice cream from Eiscafe Brede. A walk-up with loads of outside seating and they offer almost any variety of ice cream that you can imagine. (Dora here. Not sure we ever could have imagined this! And if you're walking from the train station, just a warning, it's a bit of a trek. Phew!) We both chose the Spaghetti Ice Cream, mine with strawberries and Dora's with chocolate, of course. Now this was definitely a different bowl of ice cream. Just looking at it from a distance, it almost looks like real spaghetti. But as soon as you dig into this dessert, you soon realize that it is creamy delicious ice cream. Dora here. It only took one bite for you to realize, Ernie? Took me the whole bowl. lol. Soooo good! People might've stared at me for licking the bowl. \o/ Definitely five forks out of five for both the restaurant and the ice cream! ~Ernie & Dora Hiers, Fiction Faith & Foodies Blog

Every dish we had at funkhaus was excellent. We went back twice during our short stay in Cologne, particularly because we wanted a warm breakfast. They cook the meats and veggies just right, and everything is very delicate but not very expensive, at least compared to the rest of Europe. The unfiltered apple juice was amazing. I would trust anything on their food menu to be good.

    Apple strudel! Yum!

Best meal in Cologne. Great server, food and finally some good coffee. Restaurant is busy, so not for you if in a hurry.

Ambiance (3.5/5): Harry's New York Bar is located in a hotel, though the bar has its own entrance, too. Think of it as an elegant hotel bar. Comfortable seating. Spacious. Along with a long bar which has some bar seating as well. So why not a higher rating for their ambiance? Well, this is pretty wild but there was a rat walking around while we were there. We told the bartender about it, but he didn't seem too concerned with the situation. I sure hope rats are not frequent guests here! Service (4/5): Outside of the rat situation, our bartender did a good job. Service in Europe doesn't tend to be terribly attentive, friendly, or efficient. And in Germany, they will often kick you out right when it's closing time. Not the case here. The bartender let us stay for a good while after they closed. Which I always appreciate. They even give you some snacks to munch on with your cocktail. That was a nice touch. Food (N/A): Outside of the complimentary snacks, we had dinner prior so I was on a liquid diet. Drinks (4.5/5): You would think that Harry's New York Bar is an American bar given the name. That's what I thought initially. I was wrong. Harry was a famous bartender in the U.K. who invented several famous cocktails. So that's what you should have here. They have a solid list of craft cocktails, many of them with an interesting blend of flavors and ingredients. I was happy with mine, though you will pay a premium here since it's a hotel bar. Harry's New York Bar has locations across the world. I was happy to check out my very first one in Cologne.

Located in a really cool area of Cologne, surrounded by bars, restaurants, and good vibes, what originally attracted me to Papa Joe's is that it's a jazz bar. I love me some jazz. Ambiance (4/5): When I think of a jazz club, I have a picture in my head. An upscale experience, dimly lit, with comfortable seating. Papa Joe's is not that at all. Think of it as a casual New Orleans bar. The stage is at the end of the bar close to the bathroom. The ground level is pretty narrow, with some seating and a long bar. Upstairs, there's some seating overlooking the ground floor. This is where I sat and it was a nice vantage point to watch the festivities. They have live music almost every day of the week with different bands performing. Unfortunately, the one playing when I attended wasn't jazz at all. It was funk. Not what I was expecting, and overall, the band wasn't great. Despite the music being a miss on this evening, I do like the vibes at Papa Joe's. Service (4.5/5): My waiter did a great job greeting me upstairs, taking my order promptly, and offering recommendations. Friendly and efficient---exactly what I look for in a service experience. No complaints. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so I was on a liquid diet. Drinks (4/5): Papa Joe's has a long list of cocktails, including New Orleans classics like the hurricane. Mine packed a punch, which I always appreciate. Most of the cocktails are on the tropical/fruity side. Nice selection overall. Plus beer and everything else you would expect at a full bar. The menu tells you the history behind Papa Joe's which is pretty cool. An interesting spot for sure in Germany, and one that I enjoyed, although it was much different than what I expected.
