This is exactly what you think of when you picture a traditional German brew house in the oldest part of Cologne. Head to the basement if you can, you'll get the feeling you stepped into an ancient wine cellar. The only thing keeping this from being a 5* review was the service. We had to flag our waiter down for beer and wine refills several times, when other restaurants in Cologne seem to replace your glass before it's even empty. The food, ambiance and company made up for the subpar service. We had a fried cheese appetizer that disappeared before I could get a picture. Really good. We also had some kind of cheese bread that was very good. The entrees were all exceptional and thank goodness no one minded me trying their dishes. The pork knuckle was the show stealer, though I would eat the salmon again and again, the saffron sauce was drinkable. I also liked the mushroom and pork with spatzel and even the chicken dish my unadventurous coworker ordered. The reason I suggest this is because the staff asked us three times if we wanted something to eat, however my brother really wasn't interested. Mind you, that was probably more me missing out than him namely because I probably should have grabbed something to eat and simply ignored his whimpering. In my opinion, the most authentic and best food you're going to find in Köln! Just a few blocks walking distance from the Dom, you'll find the Weinhaus Brungs tucked away behind barrels of flowers and pots of rosemary. A charming, old building with lots of history, we immediately knew we hit the jackpot. Downstairs has seating (as others mentioned) and is very dark and dungeon-like with sparkling lights. I much preferred the warmth of the ambiance in the main dining area. The bathrooms are located down the stairs though, so I at least had a peek. Yes, Köln loves its native Kölsch beer, but I was thrilled by the wine selection. Not knowing what in the world I was looking at - I was suggested a German red, which I had never heard of and frankly, still cannot pronounce. Just trust the server. The Rhine River, which runs through the city, is home to some of Europe's favorite wine regions. If it's still on the menu, DO NOT PASS UP the cabbage soup with fried bologna as an appetizer. It was the best thing I ate the entire time during my stay. And, must you only get ONE meal at Brungs, get the pork knuckles and sauerkraut served with mashed potatoes. The dish is authentic and absolutely glorious. Because it was soooo good and the service was excellent, we went there a second night. I went a bit more Deutschland traditional and ordered the sauerbraten. It was also good, but it was a bit intense for my American palate. I almost tried the stereotypical item than most Americans know to order - schnitzel - but why? And I cannot finish this review without mentioning the little "friend" I saw. Don't be startled if you see a tiny mouse scurrying across the floor when you're one of the last tables in the restaurant. This was a great little find in Cologne, not far out of the way. It was very authentic German food which was really delicious! We had the local beer, Kölsch which was very refreshing on a sunny 90 degree day of walking through the city. This is one of the few buildings not destroyed during the war and the cuteness level is off the charts. The owner was very proud to tell us that the downstairs area is more than 1800 years old. Very friendly staff and great table service. The restaurant is in a very convenient location within walking distance of the cathedral. There are plenty of tables outside and the staff actively tends outside. The inside seems a bit crowded, but is still a breathtaking sight to see. Their food is wonderful! We literally stumbled upon this place when we were wandering the streets of Cologne. What a happy happenstance! This was by far the best food we have had while in town for a convention. I had the fresh chanterelles with pork, another ordered the salmon with saffron honey, and the third ordered the beef medallions special. We also ordered the cheese sampler for dessert. We went with our waiter's recommendations on wine, and it was perfect. The waitstaff was very nice and we enjoyed visiting with them. My friend and I were recommended this place by our Airbnb host, a Cologne native. Very busy downstairs, festive on the garden side, quiet on ground floor. We took the lunch menu at 7.95€, which was light vegetable soup and linguine with salmon and dill. Both very good but unfortunately quite salty (however we generally find European dining to be too salty). Portions are very generous (copious amount of salmon!) and we could have shared one pasta, sorry to see all the food leftover (again, East Asian servings are smaller). There is a separate menu for Spargel (white asparagus) dishes, which were quite pricy for us students, but seemed excellent. After all Germany is the place for white asparagus! I don't give out 5 stars to just anyone! We found this place on Yelp and went on a Saturday night with no reservation. Of course it was booked, but the man was very nice and gave us their card and asked if we were in town the next night. When we said yes, he said to call him tomorrow and he would have a table for us tomorrow night. We stopped in around lunch time and they penciled us in for 7pm. We got there around 6:50 and they had a table waiting for us. This is an amazing place. It's tiny, but has an upstairs and downstairs, but just feels cozy. The service is good and the food and wine was excellent. EXCELLENT I say! We each got a drink to start and then ordered the suggested wine pairing with the dishes we ordered. I got pork medallions and Sean got the Sauerbraten. We cleaned our plates and finished out wine. Instead of dessert, we had another drink just so we could linger there a while longer. The place was full and everyone talking, and yet we could still hear each other just fine. And I'm fairing certain that the meal we had would be much more in Amsterdam or in Harrisonburg (Virginia). So not only did we get an amazing meal, we had sticker shock in the best way possible. We will go back the next time we are in Cologne...but we'll make a reservation first :) read more

Sometimes crappy weather is your friend. While on business in Cologne a group of us opted for a sushi dinner. As luck would have it, they had no tables available and made it clear that we really should have a reservation. Fast forward 20 minutes to 4 hungry guys roaming the streets of Cologne when it decides to rain. What's the first place we see to duck into for cover? Brungs! History is literally all around you as this place has apparently been there forever. The walls in the basement are supposedly part of the old Roman wall of the city (we didn't go look, but that's what we were told). The decor definitely says old world with dark heavy wood everywhere. The food was fantastic. The pork chop was among the best I've ever had, the steaks were perfect and the atmosphere, despite being one of the hottest, rainiest nights in Cologne in the past 40 years, was warm but comfortable and pleasant. Obviously, this is a wine house and it lives up to the name. Each dish has a suggested wine and I'd encourage you to heed the advice. The recommended Riesling was so spot on I've been trying to find it here in the states every since I got back. If you're every in Cologne and you're looking for great food in a historic setting, you aren't going to do much better than Brungs. read more

But we wanted it to be good too, and with no disrespect to German cuisine, those two don't always go hand in hand. But we wandered into Gasthaus Brungs and found that indeed they can. The building was from 1560, we were told by the excellent staff. They became particularly attentive when my mate picked out their favorite Riesling from the well-stocked wine list. I have to admit that it really was excellent. But the star of the show was the traditional wienerschnitzel. Usually enormous, but simply excellent. They had several variations but the traditional version was probably the best schnitzel I've ever had! The second day we were looking for another restaurant without much success, so we returned to the scene of the crime and had another absolutely lovely dinner at Brungs. One of the worst lunch experiences ever. Came to this unfortunate restaurant with 17 clients yesterday. 15 minutes after our arrival, i spoke to our waiter to see if we could speed up the serving. The starter (soup) came 30 minutes after our arrival. The main dish (grilled chicken breast, a relatively easy dish) came after an additional 60 minutes which seemed like eternity and despite many efforts from our part. At one point in time, our clients were chanting "we want food" jokingly (!). So good that I keep coming back for more! Myself and others always order something different so we can taste each others food (well, some of us do). While the menu does not have much variety (probably 1-4 entrees for each of the different meats), their menu changes regularly, so chances are you will not be able to order the same entree on your next visit. Also, my favorite place to be seated is in the downstairs section, where you venture down an old staircase, walk through a narrow hall with 6 1/2 -7ft. ceilings (not kidding), and finally reach the dining area. The clay walls, architecture of old German antiquity is a nice touch and really gives you a unique dining experience. Be prepared to dig a little deeper in your wallet. read more

Wow! Excellent food, served in a picturesque old building. The best meal I had in Germany. All the food was great. The best thing was the seasonal starter, chanterelles in a creamy bacon sauce. We also enjoyed chicken with spicy wheat and root vegetables (really deliciously seasoned), and Pfalzer bratwurst with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. For dessert we had apple strudel and a cheese tasting plate. I recommend the cheese plate for US foodies. It featured the three most unusual cheeses I have ever tasted. They went well with a glass of Alte Trester, a kind of German grappa. All this, along with two dry Mosel Weissweins and two local Kolsch beers, added up to 89.70 €, which I consider very good value for such a gourmet meal served in in a charming historic atmosphere. read more

Passed by this venue during a walking tour and liked the ambiance it exuded so came back later after the tour. There is a private seating area in the sun in front of the building with overhead heaters which made it very pleasant. I tried a dish I've never had...sauerbraten. OMG, it was amazing. I new that this place was big on wine but when in Köln you gotta have the Koelsch which they had on tap. We were very happy to have stopped here for an afternoon break.
