We stumbled upon Fuji Restaurant while wandering Pearl Street. Once I saw onigiris, I knew we had to stop in. We were seated quickly and given menus and then ordered at the cashier up front. I got the two piece onigiri set with miso soup and some pickled veggies. My husband got the chicken momo soup. The onigiris were formed out of purple rice and very stuffed! Usually I find that there is a lot of rice and a tiny bit of filling but both onigiris (mushroom and beef) had filling bursting out from the first bite. I appreciate that there is a piece of the filling on top of the onigiri so you know what is what before taking a bite. The momo had a very familiar taste to it, I can't put my finger on it, very warm and cozy though. It was perfect as it had just started raining too. There were also hidden veggies within the soup which was a plus. The genmai cha tea I got was also delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Fuji restaurant and would definitely come back! read more

Fuji is always a welcome sight whenever my stomach starts grumbling on Pearl Street. Just a quick turn off from the shops, this cozy spot offers light and filling lunch options. Japanese/indian/nepalese dishes here ranging from onigiri, curry, and rice bowls. They have a onigiri set that lets you pick three flavors! just off of Pearl Street is this little gem of a restaurant. Family owned, super friendly and absolutely delicious. Not only was it great to find Himalayan food, but it also has Japanese food, too. Nice little place right in the center of Boulder, near Pearl St. Mall on Broadway. One of these places I probably passed by a hundred times. Some dishes were really good and some just ok. For example, the chicken soup was very good but the Himalaya Curry was disappointing, it had a lot of content but I was hoping for more curry and also more flavor. Overall, a really nice place with I guess a little bit of a hit and miss depending on what you order. It feels great to support non-chain restaurants too. The service was good, maybe the guy that was there was the owner but he was very nice to us. He never checked on us though but it's a small place and it feels like you can always grab him if you need anything. read more

The menu is an odd combination of dishes that's familiar from South Asian, Japanese and Chinese restaurants, but they do a good job overall. We haven't tried their hard core sushi options, but Onagi Don was good in a generous portion, Chow Mein tasted good and Vindaloo was creamy and spicy. Service was fast as well. But instead of just momos we also tried the himalayan curry. Found near Pearl Street, it's a perfect off the busy street restaurant that serves delicious homestyle foods. From what we've gotten, it was very mild, tasted very clean and healthy. The momos were served with what seemed to be a tomato based sauce on the side. They were stuffed with a dense ground pork patty. It was delicious! You can get them either fried or steamed, we got them steamed. The curry itself was also really good. Mild tomato based. Came with a side of rice. Wish it was bigger so that I could enjoy more of it! I'd definitely try it again next time in Boulder. read more

We got the onigiri special set (I LOVE ONIGIRI) but none of them were very good, and the meats in them seemed kinda funky. The tofu was like a fake agedashi tofu, and was served very cold and was really not pleasant. The best part about the whole thing was the miso soup which, admittedly, was quite good. We just wanted a small lunch so we didn't order too much. I got a side of tofu, rice and veggie chow mein. The taste doesn't taste too different from any Asian food I've tasted. It's your standard chow mein. But the tofu I did not expect it the way it was serve. It was serve cold and unfortunately it wasn't for me. Unfortunately My friend and I were extremely disappointed by our experience at Fuji. It was our first time going. She ordered the chicken curry while I ordered the Onigiri special with miso and the tofu side. I got the smoked salmon, mayo tuna, and unagi onigiri. I love onigiri and grew up eating it... These were basically just expensive rice triangles. They were barely filled though I will say when I did get a decent bite of the mayo tuna, it was enjoyable. The other two I could barely taste. The tofu was basically flavorless. It was like they took a package of cold tofu and threw some shreds on top... The miso also lacked flavor. My friend stated that she was not a fan of the chicken curry; it was plain rice and 3 pieces of plain steamed broccoli with two drumsticks. We've had other Sherpa curries and were definitively not expecting this. This dish would more accurately be called curried chicken rather than chicken curry. :( read more

IMHO this is the gem of Pearl St Mall. We stopped here after checking options across the mall area and I'm so glad we did. My first choice is always onigiri at any place that makes them. I tried the Konbu and Maitaki, the konbu was my favorite but you do have to work to get a balance of the salt flavor otherwise it could be too much salt. I also ordered the momo appetizer which has the perfect balance of flavors, loved the dumpling itself and the sauce was a brilliant pairing. Partner had the lamb curry and we both loved the flavor so much that we dipped the momo in the curry sauce too. Nothing was left on our plates at the end of the meal! We finished with some genmai-cha which was perfectly steeped. We would absolutely come back to Boulder just for this meal! read more

I'd give this place 4.5 stars if I could! Fuji is our go-to stop when we are coming back from hiking near Boulder. They have great vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and their food is consistently good. I definitely recommend trying their momos (level up with the Momo soup)! Delicious and great value for your money. We came in for dinner during their happy hour and got two entrees, two appetisers, two beers, and a cup of matcha--all for just $50 (before the tip). The food was really good--they offer a mix of Nepalese and Japanese-inspired food, but I would particularly recommend their Nepalese/Sherpa dishes. We especially loved the dumplings appetiser and the Chawman noodles. All food is prepared right in front of you in the open kitchen just behind the counter where you order. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The atmosphere is casual/low-key but the place is popular--when we came in for dinner on a Tuesday evening, almost every table was taken. I would highly recommend this place for an affordable and delicious dinner. Keep in mind, however, that they close early (7:30 pm). read more

Went to the restaurant and ordered a Fuji don bowl with tuna. When I got my meal the tuna was canned. It smelled really bad and I could not eat it. I kindly told the server I expected the tuna to be fresh and if I could order something else. She gave me 2 options beef or salmon. I asked for salmon and she took my bowl. She promptly came back with the same bowl and the canned tuna still on top with smoked salmon thrown on top of the canned tuna. I still could not eat it because the canned tuna (now mixed with smoked salmon) smelled and tasted horrific. I told the waitress I could not eat this. She said sorry , walked away and ignored our table for about 30 mins. Finally we got her attention and she brought us a bill. The bill double charged for my original $16 meal and then the meal with the salmon $16 (which was the same meal with salmon thrown on top) my meal that I did not eat was $32. I had the loveliest experience when I made a solo trip to grab a bite here while I was running errands. They were quite busy, however, I didn't feel ignored. The food and love put into the food from this small family owned business permeated the atmosphere that put me at ease on a busy day- in a busy restaurant. I went at noon, so it made sense it was busy. I had one of the regular sized rice bowls with salmon and it was delightful and a really filling portion! Server was genuine and polite and able to multitask really well managing take out, dine in orders with grace. I got a chance to say hello and thank you to one of the owners; it was nice to share a smile with them. Don't forget to try one of the desserts - small yet simply delightful - pro tip: enjoy dessert with some of their hot homemade tea. Lovely assortment of matcha, chai, and other yummy tea varieties. Oh! & I didn't have any this time - but ohhhhhh the onigiri looked so good! The orders were flying out the kitchen to customers - every table had at least one order. Fuji Cafe and Bar is a great spot for quick dine in or to-go Japanese cuisine. The Onigiri is a must get for a very filling and flavorful meal. They have an extensive menu of Onigiri to choose from, whether you are in the mood for smoked salmon or sweet BBQ eel. They also had hot and free house chai tea that customers were welcome to serve themselves. I also enjoyed one of their red bean desserts, which I'd recommend giving a try too. It ain't cheap to be a Boulderite, but coming from NYC, the prices help to stave off the homesick feeling. Stopped in for lunch today and the place had a steady flow of customers. I'm still amazed at all the space here in Boulder and feeling happy that I don't have to be a hawk to snatch up a table. I had the poke salad medium ($11.80) and my lunch mate ordered the curry chicken rice dish ($9.90). Both dishes were cooked to order and certainly very fresh. My poke salad had large chunks of tuna mixed in with greens and chunks of avocado. Poke was well seasoned if not a little too salty and I wished throughout the meal that I had ordered the poke don instead so the white rice could temper the saltiness. My lunch mate was kind enough to share some white rice with me from the curry chicken plate. The curry chicken was a large plate and cooked well but could use a little more salt. While eating lunch, we were able to peruse a guide describing the best Boulder hikes curated by National Geographic. The cafe also has a small library and many books are about hiking, Mt. Everest, climbing. Nice, relaxing and tasty lunch. I will certainly be back here again after a long strenuous hike to fuel up. read more

I needed a small lunch and I was in the area and somehow I had never been in though they have been at this location for several years. I had frequented the previous establishment in this location and it is just a little out of place in some way for the types of eateries just off Pearl, I feel the same way about this eatery as I did about the last. Some nice and interesting options but order at the counter, get a number, go pick up and then clean up. Small tightly placed tables with the cleanup bar right in the middle. There were several other single customers spread around, mostly having miso soup on a cold day. Since that doesn't fit my digestion, I had to choose from items outside the list of combos with miso soup as part of the pricing. I had heard that the onigiri was good but only saw a few flavors that appealed to me so I had the fish roe and it was fine. Just a bit large and not held together tightly enough. The veggie momo was completely cold and at other places they were always warm to hot, but had great flavor and a spicy sauce. A pot of hot tea, hoji-cha, my favorite, was excellent, served in a big enough pot for 2 mugs worth. It was was wonderfully warming on a cold day and very flavorful. I might go back for another snack but this sort of place is more enjoyable to me when it has quick access and is not self cleanup. read more
