For lunch, my favorite husband (don't tell the others) and I stopped by Fujiyama for a little midday sushi date. The place was nearly empty--just us and two guys at the bar. The restaurant has a big open layout with a dark, mellow vibe. Think "sushi lounge meets introvert sanctuary." Not the most vibrant setting, but calming in a "maybe I'll take a nap after this" kind of way. Our server was friendly. Props to the kitchen, too; our food arrived almost before we had time to debate chopstick technique. We started with the oyster tempura. I adore oysters, but this one didn't win me over. The batter was too thick, too oily--more crunch than creature, sadly. I had the Sushi Lunch (5 pieces of sushi + a California roll) with a house salad that came enthusiastically dressed. Like, the salad was ready for prom. The sushi itself? Serviceable but unremarkable. My husband ordered the Sweet Potato Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Godzilla Roll--a solid trio on paper, but they all kind of blurred together in practice. Not bad, just... unmemorable. Would we return? Fuji used to be our go to for Hibachi style food. Our last experience has changed that for quite a while. The sushi came out last after asking 3 times and searching for the server after the chef had finished cooking. Refills were non existent, food was just ok. After 8 hours on the road, a Tito's very dry martini was my number followed by a freshly rolled Fujiyama roll. While both were excellent, the roll was massive. I found the flavors began to muddle the longer I continued to eat. Less is more IMO. I left half of it on the plate--too much. I give a warm recommendation as they made my "Give 'em a whirl" list. Doesn't look like much when you pass by but when you go inside it's beautiful. The place is nicely decorated, very well cleaned, and the bathrooms are very nice and clean as well. I got the lunch habachi with fried rice and onions along with the side salad. The food was delicious and very well priced. You get a lot for the price you pay. The server was super fast when coming to take our requests, when we asked for extra stuff he was super fast when getting it and taking it back to us. He was very friendly as was all the staff. It's supposed to come with either salad or miso soup, but I paid the upcharge to have both. Both were A-OK, the same as any I've had from other sushi places (maybe more tofu in the soup). I truly love Fujiyama. It's a regular lunch spot for me as I work in Kanawha City so I eat there 2-3 times a month. The servers have come to know my name and generally can guess what I want to order. Their combo lunch is a great deal, I'm a fan of the chicken and steak combo. Comes with a salad and fried or white rice. Their house salad dressing is very good. It's been a while since I did the Japanese Steakhouse thing. I must say the owners of Fujiyama really shelled out the bucks when they built this place in Kanawha City. Huge space with traditional grills and seating on one side and sushi bar with boats, I believe, on the other side. The grills are surrounded by nice granite countertops and seating is on high back barstools. Very comfortable with a great view of the chef's action as well as other diners tables. After ordering a round of drinks I opted to split the Hollywood sushi roll with my fellow diner. Meh, this roll was basically a California roll with cream cheese. Quite frankly, my local Harris Teeter does it better. Where the sushi lacked, our chef made up for it on the grill. Between our party we had steak, salmon, and lobster on the grill with fried rice, vegetables, and shrimp. After the obligatory entertainment including lighting up an onion volcano, our Chef pumped out some fluffy rice and tender veggies. The rice was a lot fluffier and less greasy than most that I've had and the veggies were cooked just right, not raw or soggy. All the proteins were well cooked too, and we shared among ourselves. My niece opted for the Bento box, and vetoed the shrimp and veggie tempura as too soggy. The kid is a foodie that has lived in Europe twice and traveled the world. I took her word for it. Please skip the tempura cheesecake, it's awful and cheesecake does not deserve such a fate. All in all, a mixed bag for my first visit in great setting with excellent service. Went yesterday for lunch. We have been several times but this particular time the hostess was very rude. We asked for grill seating, the I went back to ask her why we couldn't sit at the grill and she walked us to the grill area. Our family had dinner here earlier last week and it simply was not good. We all had various hibachi menu items, the meat rarity was descent but the insane amount of seasoning and soy etc made it practically inedible. Add to it the timeliness of having the veggies done, not optimal or even close or acceptable by an industry standard. Regarding atmosphere, freezing cold, as in leave your jacket on cold. Space heaters throughout but even they were covered in grease-nice fire hazard. The restrooms also had no hot water and not a trace of soap anywhere-very unsanitary. We will not be going here again anytime soon. read more
