This is a treasure of the Charleston Town Center Mall. Sometimes, I just go to the mall for the sole purpose of eating here. Consistently good. Simple menu - teriyaki or bento boxes. I left Richmond kind of late and by the time I got into Charleston it was almost 10PM, so I was just looking for a place that was still open for dinner. I Yelped and found that Sakura was open until 10:30PM and was relatively close to my hotel. The interior was quite large and very clean and well-decorated. They were already cleaning up the teppanyaki area so it was too late to eat on that side of the restaurant (what east coasters refer to as "hibachi;" in Japanese, "hibachi" refers to the cooking utensil, and "teppanyaki" to the grill/cooking style). My waitress was very friendly and attentive, so service actually deserves four stars. My reason for a three-star rating overall was because of the food. It was just average/mediocre food. I guess I should give Sakura the benefit of the doubt since this is Charleston, WV (actually several miles outside the downtown area), but the miso soup was really watery and just didn't taste like miso soup. The salad dressing was also a bit creamier and more ranch-like than expected. However, I will say that the dinner bento for $19.99 comes with A LOT of food. In addition to soup, salad, and rice, you get a full six pieces of California roll, a full order of tempura with two pieces of shrimp (this wasn't a combo of meat + tempura, all bentos just come with tempura), four fried shumai, and steamed vegetables under your choice of protein. My teriyaki steak was actually a nice, thick, steak-cut and was actually cooked to medium as ordered, maybe even medium-rare. The shumai, California roll, and tempura were not bad, but not amazing. Oh, and the steamed white rice was surprisingly good. Sakura has a fairly extensive menu and they are running a 15% off special through the end of May 2016, so it's worth coming just for something different, but for those of you who have had better Japanese in big cities or in Japan, don't come with high expectations. P.S. There was a mix of Japanese and Korean music playing during my meal, and I'm pretty sure many of the employees were Chinese, which was amusing. read more

Usually have a great experience here but the last few times have not been good at all. First upon seating we had to wait close to 20 mins for someone to take our order. Then after the drink order was place it took another 20 to just receive our drinks. The waitress brings out our appetizer before even taking our main meal order. This is where it went really south. We sat and sat waiting on our food. My boyfriend and I both ordered the hibachi chicken which comes with soup, salad, noodles, and a plate. We get our plate of chicken and I politely ask where is the soup and salad. She got an attitude because she forgot part of our meal. Then my sushi roll had the wrong ingredients and I was told well the chef is new so we hope you dont mind. No I do because its not what I paid for. After forgetting part of our food the waitress then takes another almost 15 mins to bring the rest of our food and fixed sushi to us...by this time our chicken and vegetables are cold. After all this mess not once was a I'm sorry or an offer to take some off the bill. So I'm ready to leave and ask for a box and the check. We pay and as were getting ready to leave the watriess then refuses to leave our table yelling about us not giving her a tip! After the horrible service how did she expect a tip. So I asked for a manager which then made everything our fault because we were rude customers for not tipping!!! I have never been to a more unprofessional place in all my life! read more

Again, coming from Cali I am always looking for some good places to eat near by so, I stopped here to have some sushi. It's a quiet place and I decided to sit at the bar. I was able to change the TV to whatever I wanted and the server checked on me Multiple times to see if I had questions or was ready to order. My daughters and I eat hibachi here once or twice a month. It's my oldest daughter's favorite place to eat and one of my favorites as well. The sushi is always fresh and the habachi is delicious as well. The portions are quite large. It's difficult for me to eat an entire order of hibachi in one sitting but I try. The restaurant is always neat and clean and the service is fast and friendly. Every since Red fire changed ownership This is the best Japanese restaurant in the area by a wide margin. read more

Food is great but it's outrageously expensive. Ordered 2 dynamite rolls and an order of spring rolls for lunch to pick up and it was $29.50 Especially when you can order two rolls and get a combo with soup or salad while eating in and it's only like $20. I am thrown off by deep frying a roll with avocado in it though. Won't be ordering carry out again. It's way too expensive when you can get the same things 50% cheaper eating in. read more

I've been boycotting Hibachi in Huntington because I loathe my tip being automatically factored in. Sometimes if my service is bad I like the power to show my disapproval. This place better not do that to me. Both my daughters have got addicted to gambling at the dog tracks in Crosslanes. They are also addicted to hibachi dinners. My eldest daughter had the bright idea of coming here before our Sunday evening at the Dog tracks. I got my usual, steak and chicken. Both were good. I didn't like their "yum-yum" sauce as much as Huntington original hibachi. I just hope they don't hit me up for the obligatory mandatory tip. My family seemed to like the meal. They never refilled my water so I had to double straw my wife's drink. Btw. If it's a party of SIX an automatic 16% gratuity. It was about $20 cheaper than our other place. read more

Today, I did a call in order for MEDIUM WELL filet, and shrimp. We went and picked it up, went home, and when I opened the box I saw that my filet was so burnt it was actually charcoaled, and all of the vegetables were so burnt they were uneatable. I call, and the women who answered literally argued with me and was laughing. She said, "when you order medium well it has to be a little dark on the outside." .. this was so burnt it was crunching.. I usually have a great experience, but the last few times I've ordered it has only gotten worse and worse. I will never eat here ever again. To pay $30 for ONE meal, that was burnt to a crisp and then to be laughed at and argued with by the employees was absolutely the last straw. My husband and I ate here this evening, May 22, 2018. We have been to this restaurant several times in the past, and have never had a bad experience. WE WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!!! We were told that it would be a 30 minute wait to eat at the hibachi grill, but we could order the same food at one of the tables or booths. We were ok with that as we have seen "the show" numerous times. My husband ordered shrimp and scallops, I ordered the filet mignon, and we ordered fried dumplings, with extra gyoza sauce, as an appetizer. The dumplings were good, as usual, but we had to ask again for extra sauce. When they bring our entrees, they brought my husband shrimp and salmon instead of shrimp and scallops, so they take his plate away, remove the salmon and bring it back to the table and tell us his scallops will be out shortly. They also bring my entree at this time. I start to remove the mushrooms to give them to my husband, when I see long black hair, not laying on top of my food, but kind of intertwined, in the filet. I show the waitress the hair, and she starts talking about she doesn't know how it got in there, that the chef had short hair, etc., etc., but they will re-do my dinner. Several minutes later they bring me a new plate of food, apologized for the hair, and again start talking about how they don't know how it got in the food, about the color of the hair, etc., and I told the waitress the only thing I knew was that it was a long black hair, it was underneath the pieces of steak, and that it certainly wasn't my hair, as my hair is GRAY!!! When things like this happen, I DO NOT expect my meal to be free, especially if they attempt to make things right. But as a token of good will, offering to take off, for example, the cost of the appetizer or a percentage off the bill, is normally what happens. To be completely open and honest about this visit, when we first arrived there was a sign on the door that said they offer veterans a discount. So when we placed our order, my husband showed the waitress his military ID, and she said they would apply the discount at the register. So $4.00 and change was taken off the bill. But when I asked about some kind of adjustment for (1) getting my husband's order wrong, and (2) having a long black hair in my food, they became somewhat indignant, saying they had corrected our orders, and that was pretty much the end of it. If I could have left "zero" stars instead of one star, I would have. As stated before, we will never return to this restaurant! read more

Not really a fan. Ordered the "sashimi salad". The description literally said "pieces of sashimi on top of seaweed salad and spicy mayo". Got it, it was a bowl of iceberg lettuce and a few little squares of sashimi on it with a ton of spicy mayo. I said "umm the menu said this was on a bed of seaweed salad, that's why I ordered it, I didn't want lettuce". The waiter took it back to the sushi chef who put 2 bites of seaweed salad on top of the disappointing plate, added even more spicy mayo and brought it back to me. Umm. Ok. Was not what I ordered and then wasn't even fixed, plus the amount of spicy mayo was gross. Then I had asked to add massage inside my California roll and it was not there but the waiter did get my order correctly. I won't go back. The prices are cheaper than Taste of Asia so 2 stars for that but the food/ service by the sushi chef was disappointing. read more
