Lived there for 15 years, terrible place, overpriced and poorly managed. Watched the building being sold 4 times to different companies, and eventually everyone wanted to get rid of it. The first and biggest problem is structural, open hallways and two funnel shaped inner apartment structures, which amplified the simplest of noise (constantly hear, people running, talking in the hallways, I have heard doors being slammed, people shouting at each other, one night there were two girls sobbing near my apartment window, which is next to the hallway of course, and one of the worst: a drunken guy was peeing on my balcony, standing on the roof!!! One time I saw homeless people sleep at the gym, they have had the lights turned off, and after I turned them back on to work out, they left, later I found needles and beaker with something burned in it where they're lying down. To simply sum it up, very noisy building, and to top it off, the fire alarm goes off every month (obligatory at least once, pulled by drunk people usually someone's guests). At one point I had two girls living exactly opposite to my apartment, one of which was constantly playing a guitar, sometimes on the balcony. Generally you can hear everything from the first floor to the 4th, from people sneezing, to someone snoring at night (the structure amplifies enormously!!!). All three elevators are extremely old, I have heard it cost 150k to be replaced, the management only replaced one of them (despite the fact that they have been remodeled from the inside with stainless steel), they break down very often. Before I moved out, one of them (on Martel lobby was broken for over a three months). Personally I also had my car window smashed (at the Martel garage) and also another time, just vandalized. The management simply refused to look through the security cameras as, I'm quoting: "it would take us too long to do that". I had filed a police report (both times) which resulted in nothing. Another problem with that place is, for some reason 80% of its occupants are college kids, which live often times more than one person at even in one bedroom apartment, which leads to constant parties, mischief, bottles and cigarettes butts on the roof (despite that the building is smoke free), they stay there for an year and new ones come the next year to repeat the same things over and over again. One time I had my air-conditioner broken, it was just blowing air, so I called the management to schedule a repair. The repair guy came and fixed it while I was at work, and also stole money and valuables from my apartment! I told the manager, she just said that he wasn't working directly for them and the only thing she could do, is not hire him again. Filing a police report didn't do much either, the cop asked me: "did someone see him steal it?" - if someone saw him, you think he would have stolen it?! I'd not recommend Avana Sunset to anyone, but to someone who is in their early twenties, likes to party all the time, doesn't mind the fire alarm going off frequently and is not willing to stay there for more than an year. read more

Very unhappy that the elevators have not been fixed in a year. The Martel has been down for over a month and now the only working Fuller one's are down as well. For the price of rent in comparison to luxury units with WD in unit for 2br on Curson or Plaza at Grove it's a shock. read more

Okay, it's clear that the person who reviewed on 02/06/14 doesn't live in the building and also has some potentially ethnophobic opinions. I don't trust the word of someone like that. I, on the other hand, DO live in the building and am capable of providing verification of such. The last management company was disorganized and terrible, and the building was falling apart. When I moved in, my microwave had holes in its lining and the cabinets were worn and scuffed, and I was told that they weren't going to be upgrading anything because the building was going to be renovated next year. Well, instead of doing that, they sold the building and things have improved drastically. Avana management is actually present in the office when they say they're going to be, which is a huge improvement in and of itself. They're upgrading the whole building, so there's construction going on right now, and it's pretty frustrating, but overall I'm seeing improvement. I'm moving for work, and my apartment will be one of the last ones to be flipped, but it will be much nicer once upgraded. Right now, as with all the studios, it has no drawers. I've been very happy with the new management and the changes they've been making, it's not always convenient, but they're open and communicative, which is more than I can say for Avalon. Residents got 1 day's notice that the building had been sold. Oh, and the former paint job? It was bright, but it was also really tacky. read more

Living in Hollywood (off of Sunset) is always going to be a gamble. That said, the staff and maintenance crew of this place are great. They're responsive, and attentive. I can't really say the same about some of the tenants. In the past year I've lived here, I've had to make multiple 911 calls for noise issues, and unfortunately the management wasn't able to be much help in that case. The apartments are nice, well maintained, and reasonably priced, but for some reason the tenants this place attracts definitely lean more towards the rowdy side. If you're a party all night kind of person and noise and police helicopters don't phase you, you'll be fine. If not - maybe rethink your move. read more

I love living at Avana sunset. The apartments are super cute and you can't beat the location. My only complaints are that times the building gets a bit dirty, and one of the elevators has been broken for almost a year (the previous manager made failed promises to repair the elevator each month). However, now that the building has a new manager, Will, all of our floors are being power washed, our community rooftop area is being cleaned, and our broken elevator is finally being rebuilt. Both of our office staff, Michael and Will, and very professional and friendly, I would recommend this community to anyone looking to live in the Hollywood area. read more

The Avana Sunset is a nice building that has had a few things pop up (or go down) that really just have to do with the building being almost 40 years old. I know I had a couple of more issues at 40! However, it has been very tastefully updated with a hip cool vibe! The staff is awesome! They are always pleasant, helpful and make themselves available! My last apartment's manager refused to let a heroic passer by in the door to help a tenant screaming help while her wrist was being crushed in a faulty elevator! The Avana staff is extremely concerned about their tenants and may have to wait too long to get one of these three elevators fixed, but it isn't for lack of trying. Is it perfect, no, but it is by far a better value than the new ones being thrown up around the area! It is in the best location for LA and pet friendly! So, inconveniences and minor maintenance things once in a while, yes. BUT, every single one of my requests has been met immediately! And the rooftop, well that is worth the price of admission! read more

This property has jaw dropping views at the Rooftop, and complimentary bootcamp classes for their residents. Who does that???? This property has certainly set the bar high for apartment living. Last March my best friend and I decided on Avana Sunset as our choice to live. I wanted to write an honest review on our past 13 months of living here in hopes to 'inspire' people who are considering moving into the building. We were shown a model home that we loved and we were promised and assured the unit we were renting was 'exactly the same' in every way. Same layout, dimensions and floor plan. We were quite alarmed and surprised on Move in day when we entered our new Unit that looked nothing like the Model apartment. The dimensions were smaller and the layout was completely different - even though we were 'promised' that it would be 'exactly' the same. We were assured that the elevator from the Martel lobby would be fixed and in working order within 2 months of our move in. It is May 2017 and this elevator still does not work. We quickly found out that a majority of the units are used for 'Air B&B' which meant there are constant strangers with suitcases in and out of the building. Notably, the apartment next to us was used as an Air B&B rental for the first 11 months we lived here. We once had a group of 6 German men staying there who constantly yelled in German down the hallway at all hours. The renters above us were special, they would yell and scream at each other all hours of the day and night. They would also move furniture around constantly and it sounded like they enjoyed dropping bowling balls on the ground around 3am. Now let's get to the more serious stuff, After about 3 months of living at Avana my best friend and I noticed that we were constantly becoming ill. We were coughing and sick all of the time. Unusual for us as we are healthy and in our 20's. I asked to have the apt to be checked for mold and after months of requesting they finally did. They told us they found nothing but we still find it hard to believe. We truly believe the building as some mold and espestos problems. We were some of the lucky ones in the building that our cars were never broken into, but if you read the community message Boards you'll see this is a common occurrence. The front door entrance on Fuller is always broken, Letting anyone come In the door. The key fob is basically a pointless accessory on my key chain. We have had 3 different apartment managers come and go in the past year. We never really know whose in the office and whose in charge. Most recently, they lost a cashiers check for $2,000 that I dropped off when the online rent payment tool wasn't working and called me Acting like it was my fault. They eventually found the check in a drawer in one of the office desks. Organization is key when running a business, I think they need some help in this department. Lastly, I told the most recent manager that I was missing a package that I had been alerted had been delivered to the package locker system but was not there. She pretty much told me it wasn't her problem and there was nothing she could do. Her demeanor was that she could care less. I understand my package isn't her number one concern in life - but can you act like you partially care just a little bit that it's missing. I would never recommend Avana Sunset to anyone, not even to my worst enemy. I highly recommend living anywhere else in the city. read more

I've been living at Avana since March (2017) and I absolutely love it. The amenities are great, parking is super convenient, and most importantly, Vicki, Ruben and Fernando are always there to assist me with just about anything. I feel at home here, and just like any other building, there are its pros and cons, but the pros outweigh the cons exponentially. I'll be renewing my lease here without a doubt! read more

Living at Avana was really annoying for the year. They promised us washer and dryers upon the move in that NEVER happened. They switched managers three times while i was there. The elevators are slow and sketchy. The washer and dryers ruined my clothes. Just an unpleasant building to live in. Very over priced. read more

Great apartments for the location (close to Hollywood, Weho, and the Valley). Good pricing. Vicki the property manager (the most recent and newest) is the best one out of the few that I saw in my time here on the property. Fernando was always great at keeping up with any maintenance requests and there was always security at night. Only issue I had was a constant fruit fly issue, but they have pest control come in monthly. Only wish was that there was a pool, but had a great time here! read more

I lived here last year but recently I've been thinking about the places I've lived here in LA and I felt the need to give credit where credit is due. This place deserves 5 stars because of the wonderful manager and leasing specialist Kelli and Amber. They were always helpful and responsive and made my living experience here wonderful. I canceled my gym membership too because they have all the equipment I need to stay fit. The Property Manager Ashley always takes care of all my request expeditiously and is very personable while maintaining her professionalism. Do not live here. I've been here 2 years and although there are some nice things about the building (gym, central air, etc.), the noise is absolutely unbearable. People are blasting music at 3 am on weekdays, 8 am on weekends and every time in between. There are also lots of barking dogs who sometimes pee in the elevators, and recently we've started to hear a wailing woman (cat?) at 5 am. read more

I have been a resident of Greystar properties for the past 4 years and I have never gone through such shady process like I did on Avana. I applied for a 1 bedroom apartment and was approved on the spot but needed to send proof of income, etc... I sent the requested information and then waited over the weekend to hear from the property, I never heard back so I emailed them on Monday, only to find out that I had made a mistake when inputting my bank account number and it came back as invalid, so what did they do? They cancelled my application, put the apartment back on the market but this time for $356 more than what I had reserved it for. It is so shady that they did that, they never bothered to call me or notify me. Of course they probably just wanted to rent the apartment for a higher price than what I had held it for. Now, the apartment is still sitting there. I will not be applying to this property and I have written a complaint letter to send to Greystar's corporate office. Even my current property manager told me that this was definitely a shady move. I am so disappointed because I was looking forward to live here. Now, I am just looking elsewhere. They need more professional staff that know what they're doing. read more

I never got to actually live here but this rating is a reflection of the bullshit Avana put me through in the application process. If you are international or a student with international parents I would think twice before putting the money down for a holding fee or deposit on one of these apartments because apparently there's an unwritten clause in the application that international proofs of income do not count as proof of income. Furthermore you will not get your money back if you're denied the apartment. I also tried calling Avana several times and left three messages and they never called me back. I also sent them an email with a different, "acceptable" proof of income in order to get the apartment. Instead of answering my phone calls, messages, and emails they raised the monthly rental rate of the unit I put a hold on by 200 dollars. They still won't pick up my calls or answer my messages and emails asking for them to reimburse me for the holding fee I paid, not even to say "no we won't reimburse you" or "no we won't accept this new proof of income" read more

I have been a resident of Avana for well over a year now and have recently decided to move to a larger unit. During this time its been crazy with a lot of projects and me asking 20 questions everyday to Laura or Alfonzo. They have been absolutely the most professional accommodating people I've worked with. I deal with guest relations and work in a service industry and can tell when someone is sincere. They are without a doubt great people. That said this is why Avana is a great spot to live. It's near everything and the office actually cares about how you enjoy your lifestyle. I've read some of the post and truly wish more would write when staff go above and beyond to accommodate. read more

Michael and William have been extremely helpful in setting up my roommate and I into our new place. They've accommodated us with everything we need and have been very helpful from the beginning. Fernando has also been very helpful and did a walkthrough for any possible service requests right when I moved in. Overall a great start. read more
