I really liked the first class with John Mendoza. He came little late but he called me earlier about the slow traffic situation. I didn't mind. He's a very good teacher with impeccable english. He started the class with 10-20 minutes of lecture about road signs and its origins, important techniques and game plan. We elaborated everything with the marker, small toy cars on a laminated paper of road maps. It was classic introduction. For the fact that he use those resource to enlighten road system is somehow outshone among old school authoritarian teachers. I also got the vibe that he's super catholic! I don't mind as long as he didn't impose his beliefs on me which he never did. Someone said earlier that she lied to him about her beliefs. You don't have to. You belief is your business. Be yourself. I tend to get very nervous while driving but he made me breathe. It did the magic. Overall he's a good teacher and takes his job very seriously. To all the people who are looking for a driving instructor, I strongly recommend his service specially those who live in the city. First off let me tell you, I was sceptical at first about all the reviews he had. I have never seen that many positive reviews on yelp before with no or very little bad reviews (gave up trying to look for them). But after the first lesson I took, that skepticism went up in air. He made me drive in conditions that other teachers or drivers would be scared of. I got to drive in the rain, freeway and he even took me to downtown S.F on my second lesson. He's a real good teacher and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart. Never before have I seen a teacher who was incredibly patient (I made alot of mistakes during my lessons) and truly invested in making you a better driver. My only advice to you when you call John for a lesson is to listen, apply what he teaches and most importantly breathe. If you do all three you are guaranteed to succeed. Don't deviate from those three or you will see errors in your driving. I'm not the best driver yet but John has given me the tools that I need to improve with a lot of practice first. John is an amazing teacher! He's very knowledgeable and teaches you very thoroughly with everything you need to know. Being new behind the wheel can be a stressful experience. Couldn't ask for a better driving instructor! John was an awesome instructor and taught me so much throughout all the sessions I had with him. At first I felt super nervous driving but after driving with him I learned to be more clam and he taught me how to fix my mistakes. (Plus the music playlist he plays quietly also helps you remember stuff for your test!) He was super friendly and he would crack jokes all the time. When I was first trying to get my drivers license John was my driving instructor. With only three weeks left before my permit expires and with no experience in driving John got me driving in no time. I was able to pass my driving test with a near perfect score, my only deduction was my fault for not noticing the light turn green. After a few years of driving I wanted to learn how to drive a manual transmission car and guess what!? John also teaches how to drive a manual transmission car. Nothing different, same experience, same great teaching now just in a manual transmission. John is a great teacher. He teaches you everything you need to know to pass your drivers test and to continue to be a safe driver. I learned a lot in my first day with him, he taught me the basic rules of driving first before actually going behind the wheel, which helped a lot. Kuya John believed that I was going to pass my test, which I did. I didn't expect myself to pass, but I did it, because he's taught me well. I was very nervous during the first few days of practicing, but because of how he constantly told me to not be by his words of wisdom, it did help a lot. I had come to John Mendoza with no experience driving whatsoever and in a situation where I would be getting very little help outside of instruction. So of course, driving for the first time, I was pretty nervous about going on the road. I'm so glad I went to John first. Not only do I have my license, but I also feel pretty comfortable with driving on my own. John is patient and kind, which are pretty great traits to have in an instructor. His positive attitude and jokes makes it very easy to relax and bolster a healthy dose of self-confidence (though he will never let you become reckless.) He won't get mad if you mess up but he will definitely keep you safe, and you'll be surprised where he'll take you sometimes in order to bolster your experience and make you comfortable with a wide variety of driving situations. John also doesn't just sit there and let you go--he helps you change how you think about and approach the road not just to pass the test, but to become a safe driver after you've gotten your license. Keep in mind his shorthand tricks to remembering safety procedures. They're the kind of tips that should be in the handbook, but are not. You can tell he really cares about his students. After a couple of lessons I could tell he adapted his teaching style to what I needed to focus on the most. It also helps that he has a great sense of humor and makes his own ironic timing with a skillfully curated driving playlist--most of the lyrics match up to one of John's safe driving tips, which is a pretty ingenious way of memorizing things. i took my test on the 2nd and passed on my first try!! he allowed a very comfortable learning environment by making each lesson fun with his jokes and music he would play. he took me to different routes, which were meant for getting a jist of different driving environments. each route had their own difficulties, but with the help of john, i was able to withstand these. i was not the greatest driver starting out, however, he always remained optimistic which ultimately helped me become a driver! read more
