Unlike some rest stops that are shared, there are two distinct areas for this rest stop. We stopped on our way South, the stop located North of where Rooks Creek crosses the Interstate. This area provides some nice topographical variety. There is a decent size playground for the kids, a bridge crossing the creek to a dead-end lookout. The inside includes a couple of vending areas, and large clean bathrooms. Since I-55 is one of the major thoroughfares of the state of Illinois, there are large rest stops every 50 - 100 miles in both directions. Per the IDoT website, this is to promote driver safety. It also encourages frequent rest stops for those passengers who need it.

There is a sign in the men's rest room that literally tells people not to wash their feet or wash dishes in the sink. Oh yeah, the sign says don't shave, either. (See pic.) Just weird. The door to the room was warped so bad that it simultaneously stuck on the handle side as it looked like it was going to break off on the hinge side. When I got in the room, you saw a one inch gap in between the bottom of the door and the frame. The sheets were stained with blood. The floor was cracked and buckling. The ceiling and shower was moldy. I caught a German cockroach climbing up the wall. I went to tell the manager about all the issues and noticed a number of the other rooms also had doors in similar condition to mine. One had several hornets buzzing in the window, which makes me think that the broken door may have let them build a nest in the room. The manager dismissed my concerns by saying, "Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! It's an old building." I wasn't asking for a refund, but I got no impression that he would ever do anything to remedy all the problems that I noticed.
