Our family cannot thank the incredible team at Furkids enough for bringing our beloved Sadie back to us. Sadie, our 16-year-old cat, went missing in December, and after days of searching with no success, we were heartbroken and mourned our sweet girl. By some miracle, Furkids took in an older calico cat found in rough shape on the streets. They nursed her back to health, giving her the care and love she needed. While scrolling through their adoptable pets, I came across a cat named Evelyn Hugo, whose markings were an exact match to Sadie's. The Furkids team couldn't have been more compassionate and helpful--they immediately responded to my inquiry, and the brilliant director of cat services personally confirmed that Evelyn Hugo was, in fact, our Sadie. Within two hours, our family was on the way for an emotional reunion. Thanks to Furkids, we have more time with our beloved Sadie, who is now home where she belongs. We adopted Sully (formerly called Pez) from them on November 10th and had an amazing experience. I applied in October before Sully was even available and heard back from them when it was time to meet him. I have a boxer with extreme anxiety when at vets or shelters and she barked nonstop while visiting Sully and they were so patient. They may have been annoyed (I was beyond exhausted with her barking) but they didn't show it. Sully has been an incredible addition and the whole process was extremely smooth. I would not hesitate to recommend them. I've seen complaints about it taking long to hear from them but people can always call and follow up. It helps to remember they are all volunteers caring for a high volume of adoptable pets and sick/ injured pets. read more

And so my adventures in Atlanta continue. I chanced upon a stray kitten last night on the highway. She was so tiny and eager for human touch that I couldn't just leave her there. And so she came home with me for the night. The next morning, we took her to Gwinnett County Animal Shelter. She weighs only 13 oz and was turned away because they don't have the means to take care of a kitten so young. If they were to take her in and can't find person/group to take her in, she would be euthanized. Instead, they recommended FurKids. We took the half hour drive to the FurKids in Doraville (we didn't realize at the time that there's a different shelter for dogs so we got lucky), and were told that there weren't any available fosters at the moment and she's too young to be left there as she needs constant care. Somehow overnight we officially became foster furparents. FurKids helped ease us into this process with as many resources as they had. They gave her a deworming and flea medication, and set us off with food (wet and dry), litter materials, and even a playtent. We've also scheduled for her shots once she's old enough to take them. I've never had a cat and didn't know I'd be fostering one, but it's been a rewarding experience thus far. Our little foster kitten is extremely social and loves being cuddled and touched. She's smaller than usual so we look forward to watching her grow in the upcoming weeks. read more

I've had a great experience here last year. I adopted a kitty (originally Ellen, renamed Sage). They asked me what type of cat I was looking for (age, temperament, color, etc) and set up a play area for me to meet a few. After I found "the one," the process was quite simple...paperwork and health documents for her. I think it was around $100 to adopt, I can't quite remember. When I took her home, a few days later, I noticed she was feeling very lethargic and not very playful. Plus she kept fussing with her ears. I called them back and they said she ma have ear mites, but to bring her in and they will check her out for free of charge. The only hassle was getting all the way to Doraville. Long story short, they gave her another physical, gave me dosages of her medicine for a month, also got flea meds, and they clipped her nails. And this was free of charge. They went above and beyond when they noticed the issue. And Sage quickly became my best friend and the most affectionate and "human-like" cat I've ever had! I can't wait to go back to get her a friend! read more

Super disappointed. We filled the application like we were told. We then received a call from Furkids setting up an appointment. They told us to look online and have a few dogs in mind that we wanted to meet and let them know the morning of our appointment which ones we wanted to meet. We arrived and were told we were only aloud to meet one dog even though the other one on our list was still available. When we found the first one was not a good match they still told us that we could not meet the other one and would have to wait and make another appointment (for a week later because that's their first opening) which he would most likely not even be available anymore at that point. When we were leaving the people next to us had 6 dogs in their room....super rude and not helpful staff. The location was very dirty and gross as well. read more

I adopted a cat from Furkids in April maybe 2 years ago. He was a beautiful orange tabby looking Maine coon that they had in the display cases over at the Petsmart in Peachtree Corners, and I fell in love instantly. Because he was a senior, adoption was free, and I got to take him home right that day. I've owned cats for many years, and know that the first 2 or 3 days home they may not eat due to the stress of a new environment. I gave the Aslan his first bath a few days after he came home (I bathe my cats once a month to control dander and shedding), and noticed he was nothing but skin and bones. One trip to the vet later they diagnosed him with Fatty Liver, and stated it happens when a cat doesn't eat for a long period of time. Looking back at his shelter intake papers, his intake weight was roughly 17 pounds, and the cat I took to the vet was a little less than 9 pounds!! The vet implied he most likely had been sick in their care, and they had never noticed him not eating or drinking. We called Furkids, obviously upset our new cat had a pre existing medical condition we hadn't been informed about, and the lady proceeded to imply it was our fault that he was sick and that he could have developed the illness while in our care. I think not! It was only through ranting and raving we got them to agree to help us with medical care for a cat they adopted out sick. It took 3 months of IV fluids and being syringe fed before cat's health turned around and he started gaining back the weight. I love him dearly but I wouldn't adopt from Furkids again. read more

Furkids is a very important organization and makes a huge positive impact on the community. We recently adopted a beautiful cat who we absolutely love. I appreciated the thorough application process, and we were able to take home our baby the same day we met her at the shelter. I was impressed by the condition of the shelter. Obviously there are tons of animals living in a space, so it smelled just like any other shelter. But the cats have a pretty good quality of life compared to other shelters. When we got her home, It became clear that our cat was sick. At first we thought it was just that she was stressed about the new environment and adapting to her new food. It is a little frustrating that within a month of adopting, we were not able to reach anyone even though we left multiple voice mails. After no call back from Furkids, we had a vet come to the house and do an exam, take blood, urine and stool samples, and examine her mouth. Turns out she had swollen gums, sores and pus, tartar, etc. No wonder her breath was so stinky! It's going to cost us around $800 for the exams and dental work next week. Totally worth it, and we are fortunate enough to afford it. We love our new babycat, so it's not really about the money. I only tell this story because when you are looking to adopt, you have to understand the financial demands that come with it. She was "free" (no adoption fee) because she was a senior cat. That comes with senior problems. Although we knew this going in (we have a cat already), I was still surprised because Furkids have vets that are supposed to care for these animals. I understand they're a nonprofit and probably overwhelmed with animals to take care of. Still, this kind of sucked. Also, I was told that if she was sick within a certain time period, we could take her back to the Furkids vets. That never happened because they were unreachable. Again, this is obviously a symptom of being stretched thin. We appreciate everything they do with limited resources. All volunteers, staff and the adoption manager we worked with are great. I highly recommend Furkids as a place to adopt from and to support financially. read more

"The largest no-kill shelter in Georgia." Paw-some! But seriously. Wonderful cause, of course. Did you know they currently have about 225 cats looking for fosters or fur-ever homes? Furkids is special because they let their cats walk around, cohabitate and cuddle with each other in small rooms rather than cages.. what a nice ability - less anxiety inducing I'm sure. They do have a few cages that are used for newbies and those who prefer no roomies :) Some of them are large popcorn carts which is like a luxury suite for a kitty. We volunteered to "socialize" with the cats for two hours. Which means, we pet 'em and talked to 'em and cuddled and played. They even let children volunteer with adult supervision (teaching responsibility or how to care for a pet? Start here with no committment!) It is good for the cats and is good for people, too! It's relaxing and even sort of therapeutic. Petting, purr purr purr, soft kitty, all that jazz. I even made a few friends, I think! I have not adopted from here as I already have 2 rescued cats at home (and 2 rescued dogs) but I am looking forward to returning for more volunteer opportunities in the future. They offer Thurs and Sat, 2-4pm. There's also the Small Dog rescue which they acquired in 2009, I believe. Bring a friend, plan a Buford Highway lunch, and have a warm-fuzzy kinda day! read more

My husband and I recently adopted two 6 month old cats from Furkids. We had a wonderful experience with this shelter and all of the employees. Furkids is a no kill shelter, and they keep most of the cats in communal rooms so that they can interact and play with each other. I'm sure it helps the cats lead much happier lives and become accustomed to a new home more quickly. During the adoption process, Nicole was very helpful and patient with us. The rest of the staff were so friendly and took time to describe certain cats and point out ones they thought we would like. They have also been very responsive and communicative with us since we brought our kitties home. One thing I will point out - they do a lot of offsite adoption events on the weekends, so the specific cat you saw online might not be there on a Saturday. Thanks Furkids! read more

First off, I am definitely a dog person through and through, but volunteering at furkids was about 98% close to converting me into a cat person. Now as this was my first time visiting a cat shelter, I had no idea what to expect... well besides cats. And boy were there a lot of cats... So when you walk in the door the aroma of cats is going to wake you up at 10am, but the longer you're there working the smell dwindles bit by bit. Now I think there were 10-12 people in the group that signed up to volunteer so we were split up into teams to do different jobs. I was helping to clean windows and just be warned if you volunteer and are assigned to clean windows... there are A LOT of windows to clean. But when cleaning the windows inside the rooms you come into contact with LOTS of kitties. When I walked into the largest room in the front, I found myself swarmed by 6-7 cats...almost felt like something from a Stephen King novel... but I jest. It was cool walking around and seeing all the cats, I swear it took me so long to clean the windows because I would stop and talk to the cats and of course pet them (I mean humans are here to serve the cats right). I even chatted with some of the regular volunteers and even told them that Yelp is for more than restaurants but you can search for places like furkids on there as well... But let me wrap this up before I go on and on about how cute those black kittens were. But I really enjoyed volunteering here. Everyone was nice and helpful and only one kitty swiped at me as I was trying to push his cat tree back by the window (good advice use your foot to avoid swiping kitties). Now I still may be a dog person but being around all those kitties made my heart grow three sizes that day. read more

Furkids helped me find a new little friend. They are so kind and helpful. I got a dog that I knew a little about and suited my lifestyle.

I do appreciate that they are trying to find good homes for the animals in their care, but the sheer amount of prerequisites required to even be considered are ridiculous. I tried adopting through the application online and noted that there is another cat in the home. I was informed then that they needed veterinary information for the cat at home. This is valid so I have that info happily. I'll preface this next part with two facts: (1) we had recently moved and had yet to establish more than a primary visit with the vet and (2) this cat has had zero health issues and does not need to go more than once every couple of years (our vet in Florida even notes that she was so healthy that it seemed crazy to bring her more often than that). My application was declined because there were not "several years of well-pet visits" on record. LOL whut. Needless to say, if you're trying to rescue a cat then go to the Howell Mill Road Humane Society location. The cats are well cared for by the staff and they can tell you all about kitty's personality and temperament. Luci has been home with us for just over a week and we couldn't be happier. read more

I adopted a kitten from them recently and, overall, I am very pleased with the experience. I filled out an online application and was contacted from an adoption counselor, Nicole, who was very nice and asked some basic questions about my living situation and current pets. Once I was preapproved, I visited the shelter to see if there were any cats that I believed would do well with my rabbit at home. I talked with Nicole, again, and then with the foster coordinator to see what my options were regarding adopting a kitten. Everyone was very kind and super helpful. The shelter is FULL of cats, so it's no surprise that there is a smell. However, it's not bad for the amount of cats they have. They all appear to be very happy and you can tell they do their best to make them comfortable. I knocked off one star because of the adoption itself. I went to a Petco to see if I connected with any of the cats, and upon arriving, the lady in charge of the cats was rude. She was very blunt and crass when I asked to interact with the cats. She seemed surprised I had already been preapproved and reluctantly allowed me to enter the play pen when I explained my living situation and current pets. She made me feel very uncomfortable, basically telling me she had no idea how I was preapproved, and that she didn't believe I should be allowed to take a kitten home. I told her I had talked to both Nicole and the foster coordinator, and she, again, seemed surprised. She said she was going to call to confirm. I honestly wanted to walk out, then and there, because she made me feel incompetent. However, I didn't think it fair to take a chance away from an animal because of a rude worker, so I kept interacting with the kittens to see which one stood out. Once she got off the phone and confirmed I could adopt, her attitude magically changed. She was pushing me towards which ones she believed would be a good fit and was praising me for my knowledge of new pet introductions. I ended up finding a kitten I absolutely fell in love with and took her home on a FTA (foster to adopt) basis. She had some coughing and sneezing so I called the shelter to schedule an appointment. They never answered, but when I left a message, they eventually got back to me. I went and they saw her and gave her some meds. It wasn't that big of a hassle considering all the animals they deal with daily. I scheduled her spay appointment a week ago and everything went well. I officially received her medical records today and she is all mine! Overall, everyone was very nice, and you can tell the shelter is passionate about what they do! Maybe the lady at the adoption event was having a bad day, I don't know, but it's unfair to to judge the entire organization based on one bad experience. This is why I would still recommend you go to them. They may be a bit picky, but it's because they have the animal's best interest at heart. I just ask that the workers/volunteers be careful of the image they give the shelter because it could be the difference between finding an animal a home or pushing potential adopters away. read more

Of course if you're around cats, it's scented like cats. That's not a big deal, when you do find the companion ideal for you the adoption process is a happy breeze. Each animal has a micro chip that has the pets history and medical records. All adoptable age kittens have their current shots , neutered, and litter box ready trained already. Fur kids gives you just about everything you need to get started except a litter box. You get a strong carrier, food, toys, scooper, vet information, and starter information. I appreciate the work they do but I think they have bitten off more than they can chew so to speak. First, it was very difficult to get in touch with them. I filled out an application both online and in person at a pet store yet never heard back. Called and left a couple of message, still nothing. It wasn't until I left a message asking if I should work with another organization that I got a call back. Once I was finally in touch with someone, the staff was very nice but geez it was tough to get a call back. I wonder how many people give up and move on -- which is a real shame because Furkids has an overabundance of cats. Once I adopted it was quickly obvious that the cats were not healthy and it was again a hassle to get someone to call me back. They have a 2 week "guarantee" but it's so hard to work with them that I ended up going to my vet instead. One of the kittens was in pain and I couldn't get a call back to bring her in. What was I supposed to do? Just ignore an animal in pain. So... At this point, trying to get the kittens well has cost me over $1K in vet bills so far. One has a UTI and Giardia that we're struggling to get under control because she had it SO long untreated. The other had ear mites so bad it was visible (yet Furkids did not treat until I asked them to) and an URI. Furkids is MUCH more expensive to adopt from than the pound and so you assume that some of the money goes to properly vet checking the animals but apparently no so. I would recommend just going to your local pound. read more

I support this organization as I do the cause. This review is based solely on my experiences, not their efforts and work rescuing animals. I saw a dog I really liked, so I went through the whole thing, filled out an application, got approved. By the time all that was done she was gone. Okay.... So I figure I'll just wait for another one who would be a good fit. After a very short time they were all impatient saying they close applications after a month (Angels among us keeps them open a year) How am I supposed to find a dog if the one I applied for is gone and I'm still waiting to find one I like. Do they just want me to get any dog? Also FYI the adoption center has inconvenient hours so it's hard to see some of the animals but it doesn't matter cause most of them are in foster and you never hear back from them. As a last note, they always look at you suspiciously..... From the head to the volunteers. It's so annoying. I'd give it more stars but honestly I felt so rushed to get a dog and felt like the staff was rude and 30 days is not enough especially for a process like that. I did not end up adopting from them. I told them to close my file because I don't think people should feel rushed into a huge decision. I've adopted my very first cat from Furkids back in 2013 and he IS the best joy of my life. Hes a well behaved, sweet and adorable male tubby. My review is not based about the organizations ability to rescue dogs and cats, obviously they do a good job of not killing the poor animals. My review is mostly about the volunteers and organizers. So 2015 I've decided to adopt another cat to accompany my resident cat. Well at first, I did not know what to expect so I found the one i liked from the website, then started my application. Someone for furkids contacted me through EMAIL only... NEVER CALLED ME. I guess they only do EMAIL transaction. Anyway, I've read stories about how 2 cats who weren't raised together might not get along.. etc..etc.. and for some unfortunate personal reason.. I've decided not to continue with the adoption. **** update Giving this organization a 5++ now since they've redeemed themselves and their organizers and volunteers seem to work very efficiently. My husband and I submitted an adoption application for a dog on Saturday night. It takes some time to fill out but they clearly are looking for people who are likely to be good pet owners. On Monday, we spoke to Nick who told us that the dog was in foster care, but if we wanted to come in they would arrange for the dog to be there. We went out there yesterday. We instantly knew that this was the dog for us!! Nick told us everything he knew about our sweet dog and we also got to talk to the people who had fostered him. Everyone was as we were told. The paperwork was done quickly and we were given a bag of dog food to start us out. Everyone at the shelter was extremely nice - even as they were grappling with all the changes brought about by COVID-19. I adopted a torti kitten here and would definitely recommend. They have tons of cats available and many rooms full of cats by age groups. I could spend all day here! The adoption process was very easy. You just fill out the application on their computer and get approved within minutes. If the kittens are too young at the time of adoption to be spayed/neutered you just bring them back as soon as they are old enough and they have a vet come in to do the surgeries every week. Bring a cat carrier if planning on bringing a kitty home same day. I didn't bring one and had to purchase one from them for $25-ish. My last cat was adopted from the Atlanta Humane Society and I prefer Furkids, hands down. read more

I love this shelter and how dedicated they are to providing the best care for their kitties. I went one day to look at cats, as I was considering adopting. My only complaint is that I had to fill out an application even though I told them I wasn't even sure I'd be adopting from them. I didn't want to provide all my personal information, but I guess it goes along with the formalities. However, I loved that they let me go from room to room to look and Interact with each kitty, and they did not rush me through it either. Perhaps a suggestion for people just wanting to look - maybe a more general registration form for people just wanting to browse, vs filling out an actual application would be beneficial. Over a year and a half ago, my husband and I adopted a puppy from Furkids. We were so impressed with the care and concern that the staff had for each dog and their desire to find the perfect home for each pet. We left that afternoon with an adorable puppy named Bobcat which my husband immediately changed to Gator. (Go Florida!) Gator has been a healthy, happy dog that has brought so much joy to our lives. We had always bought pure-bred dogs in the past- but never again - not as long as there is another Gator out there waiting to be saved. read more

I used to love this facility. I even raised money for them and volunteered with them in college. Unfortunately, I believe they are able to keep their "no kill" status because they reject stray animals that "look rough". I rescued a stray cat from my neighborhood and was told furkids is the place to go from my vet. Upon first look at the cat/kitten I brought, the rep said "We aren't taking in cats right now. And this guy is unneutured and in rough shape." I asked for suggestions on what to do, and the rep said you could surrender it to the humane society but you'd have to lie and say that it was your pet you could no longer take care of. I wasn't going to do that because 1. that seems wrong and 2. I'm not a neglectful parent and would never let my pets get to those conditions. She said no shelters take strays, only owner surrenders. I asked for another suggestion- perhaps paying for medical expenses and neutering. She said, oh sure, place a and place b do that. I asked, don't you do neuter/spay? and her response was, yes, but not for 2 weeks, you should go somewhere else. Overall, I think the cat was judged on his condition and rejected immediately. The rep may have lied to me stating that she had no room for additional cats. But, if everything the rep said is true, then we need to find a solution for true strays on the street. Vets in the neighborhood need to know that Furkids doesn't just take in strays, particularly ones in "rough shape." Still looking for solutions... read more

My family lost our Kittie December 2018! Long illness with diabetes. Well I was over at my local Petsmart two weeks ago and decided to visit "FurKids" inside of Petsmart..This was a case of " It was meant to be".. I walk in the cage and there is a Kitty ..small kitten that resembled the Kitty I lost in December..Long story short.."Roo" is now a part of my family as of last week! We are in heaven..He is the sweetest and most beautiful kitty..Susan at the Buford Petsmart helped me thru the adoption process and was wonderful!!I send Susan almost daily pics of our new addition..She feels like I do in saying " Roo is an amazing kitty!" I cannot say enough good things about this shelter. The staff is absolutely FANTASTIC! You can really tell how much they care about all of the animals in their care. If you're looking to adopt, look no further, because this is the absolute best shelter in Atlanta to work with. I only wish I had the room to adopt more than two!! We adopted a gorgeous black kitten in December from Furkids. Her name was Essence, but we have given her the name Ai (Ah-ee), which means "love" in Japanese. She is so beautiful, sweet, and was clearly loved in her foster home before she became our forever fur baby. Furkids is an extremely kind, interactive, professional, and compassionate group that consists of people who really and truly care about these amazing animals. What an wonderful organization! We worked with a counselor and several volunteers to find the perfect kittens for our home. I love that the cats and kittens are socialized and love to be held. The volunteers were very friendly and helpful. I respect that the organization has stringent adoption requirements so they are assured the animals are going to good homes. The only reason they rate two stars is they appear to take good care of the animals. The other reviews about the attitude of the staff towards potential adoptions is spot on. I was declined after Furkids' staff spoke with THE RECEPTIONIST at my vet's office. The receptionist is unfamiliar with my special needs dog and unauthorized to speak for the patients medically. Furkids' mind was made up, and despite urging from actual vet techs and the veterinarians who know my family they refused to continue with the process. I have raised a 12 year old german shepherd who is happy and healthy as a puppy, and another 8 year old rescue also healthy. Two years ago we were fortunate enough to be able to provide experimental chemo to another dog who succumbed to cancer at age 9. Furkids accused us of not providing preventative care with these animals. The veterinary professionals would differ with this assessment. Sad to watch an animal have to grow up in a shelter rather than a home because of the poor judgment of the staff. read more
