The furniture business, like so many others, is facing intense competition from online retailers. I'm not an industry expert, but in my opinion as a customer, in order to stay alive you have to offer top-notch customer service. This business does not succeed on that front. To begin with, I sought out Furniture Center after falling in love with a chair I purchased in Michigan that was manufactured in the U.S. by Smith Brothers. They make very high-quality furniture--it's not cheap, but it's comfortable, stylish and made to last. The downside is you can't purchase it online, and there are only two retailers that I found within an hour or so drive from Austin. So Waco it was. After doing a bit of research to determine the style of sectional I was looking for, I arrived at a store empty of customers on a Saturday morning. I had my two young children with me. Two sales associates and a manager were working that day. One saleswoman approached me and asked if she could help, and I told her I wanted to order a Smith Brothers sectional. They only had one example of a Smith Bros. couch on hand, but I was confident that I was ready to order -- I just needed to select my fabrics. I was left alone to sort through a huge wall of swatches. If you've never gone furniture shopping with young children, it's not an experience I recommend. But unfortunately, it was my only option that day. They will try out every piece of furniture in sight, distracting you from the task at hand. My kids aren't crazy, but they are kids. I watched as the other sales associate (who was otherwise unoccupied) perched on a stool, stared angrily at them, and occasionally admonished them for touching a TV remote (she did not take the opportunity to, say, change the channel to something kids might want to watch). I went back and forth between my kids, the sales counter and the rack of fabrics, confused about what to order and having no real help from the customer service team. My associate did not attempt to assist me in finding the right fabric. When it was time to decide a sectional configuration, I expressed my confusion at the terms "right facing" or "left facing," instead preferring to use diagrams (I'm a visual/creative person, and spacial reasoning is not one of my strong suits). She continued to cling to those terms rather than take the time to walk me through visually what I was ordering and double- or triple-check my configuration needs. In the meantime, the store continued to sit empty of customers. I'm really feeling intense pressure now to order the right furniture with frustratingly little help (I'm spending $4,000 on a couch here!), plus keep an eye on my children and make sure they do not injure themselves, break anything or cause further strife to the sales associate who keeps watching them and yelling at them. Eventually, I walked out with a hand-written order slip and a promise that my furniture would be delivered within 4-6 weeks. After seven weeks, I called and was given a delivery date (one positive: delivery is free, and the delivery guys are very kind). The sectional was delivered and ... it was the wrong configuration. I called the store and spoke to the manager, expressing my extreme disappointment in the entire customer service process that resulted in the wrong furniture order. He apologized and said it would have to be reordered, which meant another month at least of waiting. This was another opportunity for good customer service where the store failed. The manager did not follow up with a phone call to let me know when he had reordered the furniture. He did not offer any kind of discount or offer anything extra to apologize for the poor service. He merely said he was grateful for the feedback, and agreed that the sales team should be double checking before ordering. Finally, my sectional arrived, and of course, it's beautiful and exactly what I would expect from Smith Brothers. But would I jump through these kind of hoops again to order one? No. Absolutely not. When entering a locally owned furniture store, you should feel like a valued customer; not a nuisance. You should be carefully walked through your order process. If you have children with you, they should be treated kindly -- at the very least, offer to turn on a cartoon. I'm not asking for a free babysitter, but kindness goes a long way. If just one person had decided to be kind or helpful, the whole experience would have been more efficient. I will be sharing this feedback with Smith Brothers, as well. I hope that they consider offering their furniture in an Austin area store -- one that values its customers. read more

We ordered a sectional sofa, but when it came in, it just wasn't at all what we'd hoped for. They refunded our money cheerfully - they fully understood how important it was that we were happy with such a large purchase. They were so nice through the whole process! We just purchased our 5th sofa from Furniture Center. The customer service could not have been better!! There were extenuating circumstances and the nice lady who waited on me bent all of the rules to get our sofa to us ASAP!!! I don't know enough great words to describe the delivery men. They went above and beyond to get everything perfectly arranged for us!!
