About 15 year's ago we had a new piece of furniture arrived damaged from the factory. Since it was a custom piece we could not get any help from the factory. Do NOT hire Greg!!! If you do, check behind the facade to see what is ruined. We hired him to custom build a bed frame with storage drawers for $4,000. I used to refinish and do minor repairs on antique furniture as a sideline when I was young, so I know what quality work is. Greg has great reviews and seem to know what he's doing. All I can say it OMFG!!! (1) He used only 2 screws on each side of the rail to attach the headboard and footboard together for structure support. That bed would have fallen apart in a year. Any Amish or good woodworker would have used metal bed frame brackets widely sold on woodworking websites to attach them together. I even asked him if he was going to use brackets, and he sidestepped my question. (2) He proudly sent me a picture of mortising he did that one worker in the lumber store he shops at said it looks like the work of a woodpecker, and get your money back. (3) None of the 4 drawers closed flush to the bed frame. They all sat asymmetrical and cockeyed. (3) He promised traditional joinery like dovetailing and rabbeting. Instead, screws and nails were used without pre-drilling so all the wood split where the screws went in. (4) The bed frame wasn't square. (5) There was no center support beam. (6) Worst of all, he butchered our antique headboard he was supposed to incorporate into the design of the bed. He used 19 screws for this decorative piece to be attached to the bed, while only used 2 screws on each side of the rails for structural support!!! I sent him a certified letter detailing 17 items we can see that's beyond repair just by eye. We demanded our money back or legal action will be taken. We got our money back. When I took the bed apart to give back to Greg, I saw the damage done under the facade by Greg's poor workmanship. I then took around 200 pictures for documentation! read more

Greg responded promptly when I emailed him photos of our late 19th century oak drop leaf dining table. I have had the table for over 50 years and I love it but the leaves were cracked and the drop leaf mechanism was broken. Several handymen had tried to repair it but no one was successful and I knew I needed a craftsman. Greg is a craftsman--he knew the table and he's made it work beautifully. I also was very specific in the kind of natural, dullish finish I wanted for the oak. I don't like the highly varnished, shiny finishes these old oak pieces are often given. He understood and produced just what I had hoped for. I was so happy with the results of the oak table I asked him to restore my great-grandmother's mahogany table. It had missing hardware and had suffered a fair bit of damage as it is about 100 years old. I use it as a buffet table in the dining room. He did a stunning job on this table also--restoring some of the fine woodwork that had been damaged, choosing the perfect hardware trim and finishing it to a museum quality product. I contacted Greg to ask for an estimate on refinishing a desk and dining table. He was very on point about the cost of refinishing may not be worth it if the furniture was purchased through a national chain. He mentioned that were refinishing was worth it was with handed down furniture or collectibles (something of meaning). He was very willing to give me an estimate and certainly offered to provide me with a more accurate estimate should I want to move further. The pieces aren't worth it. Have a 100 + year old Asian chest with wobbly deteriorating legs that was in danger of collapse. Greg picked it up from our home and completely refurbished the legs and strengthened the area to which they attached to the cabinet. Looking at it you wold never know that the piece was repaired or that additional support was added. Greg is a true craftsman who did a wonderful job on our piece. I am a member of a National Historic Landmark committee registered as SLTCC Landmark Friends, Inc. (the charitable entity of SeaBright Lawn Tennis & Cricket Club, Rumson, NJ)--our committee oversees restoration of a 1886, National Historic Landmark site. After architectural and engineering reviews of this structure, we discovered we needed to restore the infrastructure...it's foundations, roofs, windows, walls AND we had to replace cabinets to showcase over 100 years of significantly important tennis trophies. Our historic Architect, Margaret Hickey and engineer, Tom Connolly from Cranford led us directly to Greg Reynolds of Furniture Works; we had a delightful, enlightening, educational meeting to discuss many aspects of the proposed cabinetry. The historic clubhouse has limited space, no heat nor airconditioning (it's a seasonal clubhouse with varying cross-ventilation) so we began by discussing hearty, durable woods. Next, we wanted to highlight tennis trophies, not the cabinets, and we needed to maximize space while showcasing tall, massive, ornate pieces to modest bowls and cups. Finally, we needed to compliment the simple wainscotting and moldings in the clubroom AND we needed to accomplish all this within a 6 weeks! ( a scheduled tour of players was arriving mid-end of the August) Finally, the SLT&CC Club Board needed to "vote" as we realized we couldn't fund the project without their help. HE RUINED MY FURNITURE! First and foremost, I do not like complaining about businesses, but I feel very taken advantage of by Greg at Furniture Works. Not only did it take 4 months until I got 2 pieces of furniture back, but I received them in worse shape than when I gave them to Greg. He does not return phone calls, and he boasts about his meticulous attention to detail, when in reality, my furniture was returned in sub-par condition. Do not use this company FURNITURE WORKS because they do quite the opposite of work on furniture. I went with them because of the few 5 star reviews, and boy do I regret it. There are now knuckle sized notches etched into the top of 1 of the dressers, the mahogany is cracked on most of the drawers, and the ornate wood detail outlining was left incomplete and never filled in. When I brought these issues to Greg's attention, he dismissed them all by saying "that's the history of 100 year old furniture." What did I pay him for then?? My 100 year old great grandmother's furniture was supposed to be restored, repaired, and refinished, and all it received was a coat of shellac I could have applied myself in the garage. I had the good fortune to use Furniture Works to repair several of my older furniture items, the most notable of which were two of my grandmother's small solid cherry end tables. They were in very bad shape, with a great deal of old and flaking varnish. Greg was able to refurbish 4 pieces of mahogany bedroom furniture to a state that I had never seen before. The pieces were purchased by my parents in 1949. Over the last 70 years the chest, dresser, and two nightstands had blackened handles and became covered in scratches from its everyday wear and tare. In the process of moving I decided that now would be a good time to revive the furniture. I put my hope in Greg but did not set high expectations, given the years on the furniture. Although all of the work was completed in less than a month by Greg and his one assistant, for 2 extra weeks hagreed to hold the furniture for me until I was all moved in. Upon taking my first trip to the shop to see the pieces I became overwhelmed at the transformation. The previous scratches had disappeared! The hardware had actually been a golden tone and not ash black as I had assumed all of these years. The natural grain has a glow and high gloss finish that makes them look new. All I can say, is that furniture today is not the quality that it was made before. Greg's work is the definition of old world craftsmanship and pride. I called Furniture Works on a Monday and the call went to voice mail. I called Tuesday after they opened and spoke to an employee or owner. Explained my needed repair and was told that Greg would call me back before the end of the day. I followed up at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and prior to closing at 5pm. My calls were not picked up, they went to voice mail. This company does not have the courage to tell a customer up front that they do not want the job and simply leave the customer hanging. Ignoring and not returning phone calls is disrespectful, shameful and bad business practice. I strongly discourage anybody to do business with them. read more
