So here is the deal - if you are very committed to becoming a guardian for an animal in need of a forever home and you are making an addition to the family (and not just a "pet"), then this group is for you. Serious is an understatement on how they take the process of accepting new guardians. I did the application online (please be sure to read all the adoption stipulations because there is no wiggle room on any of them) which approved me for a phone interview with Emily, which approved me for an in-person interview, and then a house inspection with Sue. Once all that was to their satisfaction - literally, then we were allowed to adopt a puppy with the stipulation of going through initial training with Sue and making repairs/fixes to the backyard (which Sue came back to check 2 weeks later to inspect and insure was completed as promised). They really more than love these animals - they care for them with expert knowledge, extensive time and dedicated attention. So unless it is all correct AND a good fit, the adoption won't happen. So be prepared to go through a few steps and not get approved. I can understand why folks would leave 1-star reviews if they go down a process and in the end, it doesn't work out. We are happy with our new little family member and are working on our serious lifestyle change/adjustment to be able to have him. So it is more than good luck or an animal needing a home to be able to adopt with Furry Friends: it is the right fit and showing serious commitment. I dont normally wite this but after reading some of the reviews I felt I needed to tell my story. I foster dogs. This time I picked up a 6 week old puppy from Modesto animal shelter. I keep my fosters in my home raise them as my own and show them off to find them homes. Well I posted the little girl and the reacue immediately responded to me post offering to take her in and find her a home. I contacted them back and the woman first tells me she does not except friends on facebook. Then tells me she only wants to make contact through email and does not want to just give me a call to discuss the puppy. She tells me she can have a foster meet me to take over care. I told her I would happily continue to foster her for them. She told me no that her rescue was out of Fremont and Tracy was to far because they have their own trainers, vets, and puppy classes. I said I understood and I could meet her at the shelter. She kept saying that my foster looked the a certain type of shepherd and she was sure she was that breed. She then starts texting me even though she did not want to before. She sends me a location and asks if I can take the puppy to a foster there. The location was further from Fremont then I was. I said that made no sense and she explained she had an amazing Foster and told me where they lived. There location was 4 hrs from Fremont mind you I live a little over an hr. I told her I did not understand . She then says ohhh well they will only have the puppy untill she is 8 weeks then she will go to another foster. She was 7 weeks already. This lady wanted to take this puppy 4 hrs away to a foster for one week and then transfer her to someone closer. It made absolutely no sense and she just seemed like she was back tracking and changing her story. I told her I would let her know but for now I would keep the puppy. I let the rescue know of 5 more pups at the shelter. Obviously told then this before they weirded me out. They end up going and picking up 5 pups. They post that they are filthy because at the shelter the cages are only cleaned once a weel if they are lucky. Totally untrue they were filthy because they all have diarrhea. The shelter cleans cages at least once to twice a day. Seemed odd for a rescue to bash the shelter. Then she post that the pups will be fostered in San Francisco, Danville and one other location all just as far if not further from Fremont then I was located. I questioned it on facebook. She got mad and sent me an angry email that I should not talk on their facebook page and that They were not going to try to get a vet or trainer in Tracy just to accommodate me.( ummm I would have driven to them for things but that was never an option.) She said all her foster people are vetted and well qualified and that she had vets and trainers and puppy play classes near all of them. She just kept digging her hole. I think she really wanted the puppy I was fostering because she was going to lie and say she was some fancy shepard breed when she absolutely was not. I also dont even know whats going on with the foster situation. Maybe she is hoarding some of the animals. Something is really off. Also with so many people saying they wanted to adopt and were not even called back it is really strange. Every rescue and shelter in the bay area and central valley is over run and begging for fosters and adopters so to turn good people down is more then just weird. read more

But yet after you fill out their 6 page 200 question adoption form, you got a robot reply that says you will be contacted in 72 hours. HEADS UP: NOBODY ever contacts you. Why in the world would you have dogs that you want to be adopted into loving homes, then ask people to fill out an adoption form and then NEVER get back to them when you tell them the dog is still AVAILABLE!? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. They are just as bad as NORSLED. Screw trying to go through the "adoption drama" and just get a dog from a breeder, shelter or Craigslist. At least you'll get a REPLY!! What a waste of time!! I wish I read all the other ONE star reviews before filling out the form for 45 minutes. The initial process was an unexceptional experience with Furry Friends Rescue. My partner and I submitted our first adoption application and were interested in one particular dog. Weeks later, my partner received a response from Emily Verna, the "President," via email. Unfortunately for us, Emily was rude and made unnecessary assumptions about our male dog (not neutered). In the first email, she asked, "I was wondering. Why is your male dog not neutered?" We responded to her concerns about this and explained that after discussing with our vet at the time and given his age, we decided not to get our male dog neutered. And then, in the second email, Emily emphasized, "It is not fair if your male dog may want to hump a female dog." This bothered us because we felt that from Emily's second email, she already decided to disqualify us based on her assumption that we would allow our dog to "hump" another female dog. My partner even replied to the "President" that our dog's late non-biological sister lived to the golden age of 19 and was spayed. And prior to her being spayed, he did not hump or even attempt to do so. After this email, we have yet to hear back from Emily again; however, we just checked their FFR website, and it seems the dog we were interested in adopting is currently pending adoption with another family. We went through the packet and had aFT call with Sue. My husband and I have adopted over 12 GSD in the past 20 years. We are not inexperienced. Sue, made us feel like we were horrible humans. She didn't like the trainer I used. ( she doesn't know him, but claimed she didn't like the way he trains) she didn't like I was retired, because I would cause a dog to have separation anxiety because I'm home. She didn't like that we travel in our RV and didn't like we had modified our GMC dually diesal backseat for our dogs. She didn't like our pool. All my shepherds swim. I have a 5 year old femaleGSD here and my daughters GSD/shiba inu mix here (she's deployed) she had issues about him. Sue looked for anything to deny us a dog. I guess it is a bit of a love hate with this group. I found a kitty that I liked online, I had to wait until the next showing, was able to meet the cat and her foster mom in Fremont. Then I applied, after applying I set up an appointment with the woman who does home visits. She came by and had some good suggestions for getting kitty comfortable in her new home. The foster parents are caring for these cats as if they are a part of the family so I can see that it's hard for them to let go and trust that the new owner will be good enough. I got some hassle for putting on the application that I will leave kitty for a weekend home alone at times, but that's what my lifestyle requires. So once kitty was here, we had some scratching growing pains but with some suggestions from the home visit lady and the foster mom as well as no-scratch spray from target, kitty and I are happy as could be! Compared to other groups, their petfinder website is up to date and they do a good job of describing the personalities. The adoption process is very extensive but if you make it through you are likely really commited to getting a pet. We started with a phone interview with a volunteer, followed by a visit with our puppy, and finally an in-home visit. Honestly, I really appreciated the level of work they were willing to put in to make sure we could provide our sweet puppy a good home. I adopted a dog from the FFR system, because initially we thought the dog was a great fit since we met him in person and the foster explained the details after extensive questioning. Our house does not have a yard which was my primary concern because I wanted a dog that would be comfortable in that living situation. The dog did great and got along with my family well, however there were a couple of road bumps we were willing to give him more time to adjust and settle in. The foster kept asking us questions about how the dog was doing and we were being honest with our answers. Out of the blue, the foster canceled our contract and demanded that the dog be returned the next day. The foster claimed that a couple days is not going to make a difference, while initially saying to give the dog some time. My family and I were in shock, and we returned the dog with our hearts broken. I checked back on the website to see that his adoption applications were open and there was a foster update (which was not there when I had initially applied). There were many contradictory statements and discrepancies from what the foster had told me versus the website. For instance, foster had claimed on the website that the dog we adopted needs a yard while the foster told us the dog did not prior to our adoption. Coming from my own fostering experience, this system seems to be broken and I would proceed with caution when adopting because they seem to be a little dishonest in their work. In the end, our story with this shelter ends in both heartbreaks for my family and the dog we once adopted. read more

My family was looking to add a new kitten to our family this year. We saw a picture on an adoption website and wrote FFR to see if the kitten was available. We sent in our application and it was approved. He was so we made the drive out to meet with him and the adoption coordinator. The kitten looked like he was in good shape and well cared for, that is not the issue. The issue is that she was rude as could be to us from the minute we walked in the door. We felt like we were on trial and having to prove our worth to adopt a kitten. In a 10 minute period of time she insulted me, my children and their dad. I am appalled at the way she treated us. I have never understood organizations that make it so difficult to adopt animals. We are very experienced animal caregivers and made that known from the get-go. With the over-crowding situation in shelters and on the street it baffles me why they make it so difficult to adopt an animal. We went later in the day to a local rescue group who welcomed us, NICELY asked some relevant, reasonable questions and approved us for an adoption, no problem. I would recommend to FFR they remember the purpose of this is to place homeless animals in suitable homes who can love them and provide them with what they need. The interrogation and insults are uncalled for and frankly, ends up costing the animals who could have ended up in nice homes clearing more space and helping that many more animals. read more

My girlfriend and I researched several rescue organizations around the bay area, and eventually came upon Furry Friends Rescue. We decided on Maxwell, a 10-monnth-old Lab, as a potential adoption. According to the website, you simply complete the online application, and you'll receive a response from an adoption counselor within 72 hours. Unfortunately, all we got was an automated response thanking us for our application. A week had gone by, and we thought that we would have a better chance at adopting Max if we applied in person. So we printed out another adoption application and attended one of the adoption showcases. Once there, we met Max and his foster parent. We told him about our online application, but as we had suspected, he didn't recall ever receiving it. When we got around to describing ourselves, he spent the entire time trying to convince us that our living situation was less than ideal. Although my girlfriend was new to owning a dog, I've had roughly 15 years of dog ownership experience. We live in apartment, but the park right across the street would more than make up for the smaller living conditions. Exercise would be no problem since we're both pretty active with running and biking. We both work, but had intended on sending her to day care services when we were both away. Ultimately, there would never be a time she'd be left alone for long periods. Before we left, we gave him the application. Once again, after a week of waiting, no response. I'm not sure what their criteria was, but if you've got a home with a massive yard, you plan to hike/walk/run multiple times daily, and you'll always be home, you MAY have a chance at adopting from here. My family was turned down for an adoption because my husband couldn't come for an adoption interview. He travels (alot) and works (alot). And quite honestly, if I am going to have him take a day off work/ fly home from overseas, it will be to see my kids basketball game or ballet recital not to spend time talking about a cat that he is not responsible for and will not spend time with. All the reviews are true especially with the one stars. I went to a grueling vetting process a dog a I wanted to adopt ginger. I took videos of my back yard, did a daily schedule and all that time they had already had a someone in mind. The foster emailed me saying sorry we basically found someone better than you. There are plenty of rescues that adopt out animals with little to no screening to make a quick profit/turn-around but this rescue is purely dedicated to the welfare of the animals. Donations to this rescue are solely allocated to the animals' care. A common complaint here seems to be that the rescue is unresponsive to applicants. Please keep in mind that aside from the 1 person running the rescue full time, everyone else is a volunteer. And that one person has to coordinate around all their schedules. Due to the high volume that comes in, they simply cannot reply to every single application. They clearly state that responses are made to applicants who are found to be good a match for the animal. I recommend visiting one of the adoption showcases to meet the volunteers and some of the available animals. You'll often get to learn more about the animal you're interested in directly from the foster home or make a lucky connection with another one. A LOT of time and money is put into the care of the animals to ensure that they are given the best chance at finding a loving forever home ideal for the animal's individual needs (activity level, personality, health issues, etc.). These types of mismatches are often why they are dumped or rehomed in the first place. It's also in the best interest of the adopter to be matched with the right pet for their lifestyle, whereas many apply based on the dog's appearance or breed. I see their rigorous screening process as a positive trait rather than a negative one, and I'm sure all the adopters would agree. read more

I jumped through all their hurdles to adopt a dog I fell in love with. I even started construction on a fenced out-door space that they "required" with a minimum 5 foot height. All done in ernest and at my expense. They decided my hillside yard was too adventurous for a Jack Russell Terrier Mix. Yep. Pretty rough country up here. To many fox holes?? They're a pretty adventurous breed and the dog would have been in great company (all the wildlife). And. The house is about 5,200 sq. ft. which, of course, wasn't good enough with all its dangerous free area to roam. My 3rd floor patio was a puppy suicide waiting to happen. When I asked if they adopt to apartments they told me yes: they feel it's safer for the dogs (to walk in traffic instead of the wilderness). Furry Friends rocks, I have 2 dogs adopted from them. In both cases they handled my apps in a timely manner, gave me a home visit and got my new dog loves to me in about 2 weeks the first time and 1 week the second. They are a volunteer group and sometimes volunteer groups are herding cats. I volunteer with 2 other dog rescues and all of my interactions with Furry Friends folks have been fantastic. In fact getting my 2 poochs from Furry Friends led to my volunteering with my 2 rescue groups, one a humane society and the other a Boxer group. - I should give FFR some of my time, lol, if I had more. Anyways, expect some discombobulating from any rescue group that doesn't have PAID staff to handle all the details. To the lady who questioned why they have picked up puppies or other dogs that might have easily gotten a home from a kill shelter. Puppies without a mamma must be pulled from a shelter or they miss the most important socialization period of their entire lives. Kill shelters have no time to do that work. Also, you must realize that the kill shelters only have to hold a dog for 4 days until they can legally kill it. After that it is up to the shelters policy and finances and current population. A full shelter with little city money is going to kill on day 4 plus 1 minute. Its brutal but its what we have to work with. Some shelters are great - Hayward for one, where they often keep dogs 3 weeks. Others, especially rural shelters have no resources and some, honestly, don't care. You have to move fast and pull great dogs or puppies because its not like you can come back next month for them. It wasn't easy adopting from this organization, but we didn't mind. We appreciated the time they took finding the right "forever home" for these rescued animals. We adopted a very small chihuahua who took a bit of time warming up to people. She just needed a warm lap. We had several visits before she came home with us. We worked with that dog for three years and no one ever said she had behavioral problems. We were never able to house train her, even though we had 4 people walking her at various times of the day. She could hold it in overnight, but 20 min. after a walk, there was a puddle or log. Also, she never really played. I thought that was so sad. There came a point where we couldn't clean the carpet anymore, and my daughter was moving, and Quila was spending what I thought was too much time crated. I felt a call to FF would be best. We called the person who had helped us in the beginning and she started yelling at us for not being good enough pet parents, and that we had "lost interest". We were just fulfilling our part of the contract that says to call them instead of giving the dog away. There are many people I know who would love to have her and are home all day, but they won't go near FFR. I suggest you don't either. Oh and if you see "Tinkerbell", her real name is Quila (she answers to that) and she is a special needs dog. She needs one special person to be with her all day. read more

Furry Friends Rescue is fantastic especially considering the fact that all of their workers are volunteers. I adopted a 4 month old kitten. He has brought so much joy into our lives and I can't thank them enough for this gift they have given us. We adopted him in one day, too. We came to the Petco and they were more than willing to help up adopt as soon as possible. They did a house visit for us and they worked with us until 9:00 at night and even helped us around the store and suggested things to get for our kitten. These people are really dedicated to animals and to finding their forever home and I can't thank them enough for what they have done for us. We attended the Furry Friends Rescue event "Paws in the Park" at Santana Row. It was very fun. We entered our little Shorkie in their "Coolest Dude" contest and he won! The volunteers their were very friendly and it was great to see the adoptable dogs there having a good time. how does this rescue group justify the exurbanite fees to rescue an animal. This is their requirements. Teen-Adult Dogs (8 months - 6 years old): $325 (Mix), $350-$400 (Purebred), Chihuahua/mix & Pit/mix: $200 or please help match vet bill cost to FFR (usually about $350 - $700) And how can they prove the animal is a purebred with doing costly DNA testing? Animal care and control rescue does the exact same thing. spays and neuters, vet check, takes care of health issues etc. Yet their fees are 1/2 or less of the cost of a rescue dog from furry friends. These recuse groups go to city & county animal care and control and takes the "pick of the litter" so the general public doesn't stand a chance of adopting these dogs for a reasonable price. Then they put so many restrictions on adoption - can't leave dog for more than 4 hours, must have this, must have that. We want to make sure our animals goes to a loving home. I can provide a loving home but I don't have $500 to purchase one that comes with no guarantees. Just because i don't have $500 doesn't mean I cannot provide financially for any animal I adopt. Come on get a grip - how many full-time workers have dogs? It is ludicrous. I can add another $500 to their price and get a purebred WITH a one year health guarantee. IF YOU ARE GOING TO RESCUE AN ANIMAL CHECK ON LINE BY PUTING IN "FINANCIALS OF name of rescue group" in any search engine. Then look at where the money is going. My wife and I adopted a pug from Furry Friends last year. The rescue folks were very nice and very focused on making sure that the dog was as happy as we were with the adoption. We were so pleased with how careful they were - there were no surprises, we knew exactly what to expect from the dog and the process, and we got very fast responses from them. I had been trying to adopt a pug for over a year from the regional pug rescue group and never even heard back from them. We have 14 years of dog experience with pugs mostly, we had 2 other trained companion dogs for our adoption and my wife was home all day - there was no reason to ignore our repeated requests. We love our dog and have been so impressed with Furry Friends that we foster dogs for them on occasion now. I really appreciate that, as a foster parent, I can have input on what will make the dog happy in terms of a home. If I spend 4 or 5 months raising a dog, training it, feeding it, housebreaking it and loving it, I want to be sure that it will go to a forever home that will fit that dog's personality. We are fostering a puppy now that would not be suitable for an apartment or small condo, for instance - he is a big breed and needs a big space Certain dogs have certain needs - it is the reality of successful dog adoption. We rescued our beloved chihuahua mix from FFR a few years ago. Being a young couple, I definitely think they were a bit skeptical of adopting out to us (which drives me crazy since we treat our pets better than most people treat their kids!). But after we went to the showcase and met with the dog and his foster mom (who we are still friends with to this day), I think they felt a little better. They come and do a home inspection which I think is good for them to do. Since then, we've kept in good contact with the organization to send updates on how great our lil guy is doing and they are always really gracious! We attend all their great fund-raising events too which are always a blast! They have a great team of fosters that really care about the well being of the dogs and they are always really welcoming at events... always remembering when my dog used to be at the pound. It would be great if they could raise enough money to open a shelter! read more

I adopted a rescue dog in November 2014 from Furry Friends at one of their shows near Raily's on Paseo Padre in Fremont. They scrutinized me much more than they were willing to give up background information on the dog. They charged me $350 for an "adoption fee". Well after four months of loving this dog, caring for this dog, spending every moment of every day with him, training, teeth cleaning, shots, doggy camp, top notch food, toys, great yard - he turned out to be a fearful aggressive dog that bites. Furry Friends was of no help except to take the dog back. This organization will no doubt adopt the same dog out to another unsuspecting family. Get your rescue pets from the shelters directly, they are overflowing and cost like $50 if you care about the pets and not pumping these "organizations" with cash. read more

My parents and I got two dogs from Furry Friends Rescue. They're an amazing rescue group run by a lot of volunteers and people who work around the clock. Like seriously. They go and pick up dogs and cats who are about to be put down even if it means a 2-3 hour drive late at night. Emily, who started the org, has a big heart and serious love for dog. The forms, fees and home checks are in place to ensure dogs and cats get a home who will take good care of them. That's it. So yes, the process can be long and might be on the higher end, but the intentions are good. And keep in mind, the money for the adoption goes back into the organization. So whatever money you pay for adoption is going to help another pet get fed and adopted. Worth the cost? I think so. No reply to any of my emails so just checked their website and went in on Sunday morning. Cats on the website weren't even offered anymore, they only have 5+ year old cars and most of them were overweight. Place stunk and it was cold and volunteers weren't knowledgeable at all about the cats. It very chaotic place. read more
