The styles are mostly traditional American - Shaker, country, and simpler styles, not the more elaborate 19th century American variations on Victorian and pre-war overstuffed - but they do include a lot of fairly stodgy upholstered styles as well. They claim mostly Amish manufacturers, in small lots, and the basic woods are (supposedly) all American-grown - cherry, oak, walnut, hickory, and pine in evidence, not sure about maple and cedar, but the staff say they can order almost any piece in one of the basic woods. The owners are also the sales staff so it's a true small business. The only thing not great about Kugler's is the prices, which are full boat retail price. As in, $300 for a small cabinet, $1000 for a small dining room table, $1500 for an armchair, just for a sample. These are not outliers; they're typical. I've bought unfinished pieces of similar manufactured Amish origin at Adirondack unfinished for significantly less, but - those are unfinished and unupholstered, and the quality isn't really quite as high as the basic stuff at Kugler's. So it's not quite a competition so much as different ends of the same spectrum in the same basic vein. The true differentiator may be that you basically are going to be able to custom-order a piece with the wood, finish, and upholstery of your choice, for the most part; it's not true custom furniture as you're ordering a known type or style but it's pretty close in terms of customization within the range of choices. And they do have some very nice pieces. I'm a little reluctant to go to four stars without some evidence as to the long-term quality of the furniture, but then again you'd be waiting a while for that, presumably, so consider this a placemarker review in the meantime. But I also note I can't really afford to shop here for anything big, so I am out of my league - take that for whatever it's worth in terms of the star rating or the credibility of this reviewer.

We have been customers of Kincaid for over a decade and have furnished our kitchen, dining room, great room and master bedroom there, as well as purchased many unique chairs, benches and tables from Kincaid. We are sticklers for quality in the sea of particle-board furniture offered at the local 800-pound gorillas. Kincaid's furniture is always made from the best materials (solid hardwood and durable leather) and is in a separate (higher) class in comparison to what is available elsewhere. We also have had two minor furniture malfunctions (one due to a toddler harming wood on a stool and the other due to doors not properly aligning on a hutch) and both times Kincaid stood 100% behind their piece and either repaired and/or replaced the damaged items, hassle-free. Found this furniture store in Albany, the owners were very friendly but I had an issue with the delivery men, which were two young individuals. Purchased the furniture May 9, was promised a delivery of May 10 with installation, which then the delivery men will be paid $20/hour which would be paid by the buyer. So Delivery date comes, my furniture gets delivered, but that was it, as the delivery men proceeded to walk out the door I stopped them and asked what about the installation, which they seemed confused about. One guy stated that he was told he didn't have to install anything and I specifically stated that it was told to me by the owners that once the items are delivered it would also be installed, which was also stated on the receipt. They didn't believe me so I called the owner on speakerphone, informed her of the situation, and she then responded that they have other deliveries to make but they will come back later in the day to install the bedroom set, The delivery men also agreed to come back, but they never came back! So the following day, i call the store as soon as they opened. Spoke to several individuals about the situation and how the delivery men never came back. Finally, Around 5 PM I was told that the delivery men will come back after 7 PM to install everything. The two individuals finally came back and installed the five piece bedroom set but I had to remind them that they had to throw out all the boxes and clean up which I guess pissed them off because they left all this garbage on the floor, gave me an attitude, and insisted that they're supposed to get paid $70 each! LOL! Had to remind the young individuals once again that it's only $20 an hour and they only been here for an hour and 10 minutes. Long story short, they only got $20 and I have to sweep all this garbage up off the floor! Never again! Lesson learned. If you're looking for a decent furniture store with professional workers, go elsewhere, oh and they left the boxes/trash in the lobby! Such losers!!!!

We moved two years ago and…read morewent on a mattress-shopping mission, going to a couple big name stores and this place, which appears to be just a locally owned, stand-alone mattress store. Making any kind of big purchase can be fraught and stressful. You want to get a good deal, but it's like the people selling the things are trying to make that as difficult as possible. But I'm happy to say that getting our mattress at Mattress Xpress was probably the most pleasant "big purchase" shopping experience I've had. The showroom is absolutely massive, and no one was hanging around, watching our every move as we tried them out. We did meet Karl, and he directed us to some we'd like and answered any questions we had, but he mostly let us figure it out for ourselves, which was great because we were probably there for 1.5 hours going back and forth between our favorites. We ended up getting a great deal on a king size latex mattress. And even though it was one of the most expensive mattresses in their store, it was sooo much less than what you'd pay for a latex mattress elsewhere, and even less than a mid-range mattress at a big name store. We used to come back from traveling wishing that our bed at home was as comfortable as one in a hotel. Now that's reversed and our bed at home is more comfortable than any hotel.

We purchased some futons from Capitol Mattress when we first hit town, and while the delivery guys…read morewere very nice about it, they kept delivering full-sized instead of a Queen. The sales manager finally insisted that that was just the size queen futons ran (despite our experience to the contrary over the previous 25 years, and the objective standard of my tape measure). We were promised it would "settle" to the correct size, which it did not. So we were stuck in the end with a full-sized futon that really didn't fit the frame we already had nor was otherwise useful. Despite this, we gave them another shot when later searching for new mattress and futon sets with frames to fill out a guest room and one of our bedrooms, and I thought I'd finally hit upon the nice combination of platform and headboard for only a bit more than on-line prices for the same after comparison shopping all over the area. To make a long story short, six weeks later we didn't have the frame we'd been promised in three weeks, and had to cancel the order. Mattresses and frames are difficult to shop for, and it's not made any easier by the fact that this industry still seems to be run on the used car model of changing stock, borderline-to-bait-and-switch tactics, commissioned salesman, outrageous markups, and other shenanigans. But the one thing you want from a bricks and mortar store is the ability to keep things in stock. If I have to wait 3-6 weeks, I can use the Intertubes to order the same thing, and that's what we ended up doing. If this seems like a weak review for three stars, it is; but given how bad the competition also is (trust me, this was not the worst place I dealt with while bed-shopping, not by a long shot) it creeps into that average-for-its-genre range. Logistical note: this is sort of hard to get to, you have to be heading north on 9 and take the exit for the 2-Troy Schenectady Rd. roundabout to get to their parking lot. Plan accordingly.
