We hired Mr. Gaudencio Fernandez to replace our entire roof, siding and paint work, etc. as per contract. The roof work didn't commence on time. Additionally, the roof materials were left on our driveway instead of the roof top. We contacted Mr. Fernandez to inform him regarding this and to check when the roof work will begin. He never returned our phone call.
After a few days, his crew from Texas simply showed up in the morning without prior notice and started working on the roof. When the workers were in the process of installing new shingles, we noticed that they had not removed the old torn underlayment (felt) and were about to lay the new shingles on top of it. This didn't appear right, so we called Mr. Fernandez to inquire about it. After he spoke with the workers, they laid the new underlayment on top of the old underlayment and then the new shingles.
The following day, we noticed that there were no overhangs over the left and right side of the edges of the roof and over the two small sections on the backside of the house. Also, the old metal flashing over the two small sections were not replaced with the new ones and some nails were missing/some were exposed and not sealed. This can cause leakage. Additionally, the exhaust vent from the dryer was installed incorrectly (wrong exhaust vent was installed). Therefore, the exhaust vent was exposed to the attic which is dangerous. We reported these issues to Mr. Fernandez and asked him to correct them. He initially refused to address the problems but after some research at our end/conversations, he agreed to fix them. The same crew from Texas came to fix these problems. The shingles were removed from the right and left side of the roof edges and replaced with the new ones. Also, the wrong exhaust vent was replaced with the correct exhaust vent. But, they failed to remove the shingles from the edges of the two small sections in the back. Instead, the damaged shingles were inserted as an overhang and the missing nails/exposed nails on the metal flashing were not fixed. This entire process took the crew about 6 hours to complete.
Since Mr. Fernandez's crew had provided us with such poor workmanship, we were concerned with the condition of our roof. We wanted our insurance company and mortgage company to inspect our roof but we were notified that they were not required to inspect as the work estimate was less than $10,000. Mr. Fernandez also stated that he would inspect and provide us an inspection report.
The siding work was also delayed for almost a month. After many attempts, it was finally scheduled but the crew didn't show up on the scheduled day. They appeared the following day without any notice. Also, Mr. Fernandez never appeared on the job site to instruct them as to the location of the sidings or the number of sidings to be detached/reattached. Therefore, it is questionable whether this work was performed as specified by the insurance.
One day, when it rained, leaks were detected behind the gutters. Mr. Fernandez was notified of this, but our concerns were disregarded. Instead, he said that we were making excuses and stories to avoid paying him. Thereafter, he also sent threatening texts saying that he would bring his workers with signs in their hands to demonstrate in front of our house and demand money. He was informed that we had already paid him $3,000 (partial payment for the roof) and that we had no intentions of withholding his money. We wanted him to simply fix the roof accurately and would thereafter pay him. An invoice for the siding work with details was also requested so that he could be paid for the siding work. This invoice was never provided to us.
Mr. Fernandez stopped communicating with us. He sent his worker, Mr. Jebberson Chavez to inspect and fix the problems with the dormers and to correct the poor workmanship and leakage from the gutter outlet installed by Mr. Fernandez. Mr. Jebberson was also notified of the leaking issues behind the gutters and concerns with the drip edges and overhangs on the edges of the roof above the gutters. To this concern, Mr. Jebberson mentioned that they had fired the Texas crew who had initially performed this lousy job on our roof.
This was concerning to us because there could be more defects on the roof. Mr. Jebberson also promised us to provide a list of items requested by us in addition to his findings during the inspection along with a roof inspection certificate and detailed report signed by his president, Mr. Fernandez. These documents were never provided to us. Mr. Jebberson also stopped communicating with us.
We consistently asked them to fix the problems and provide a roof inspection report and a separate siding work invoice, but these requests were ignored. Consequently, we sent them a notice that since they failed to assist us, we would have a certified roofer to inspect our roof.
