The front part of the parking lot features restrooms and vending machines and a few memorials and monuments. On the back side is an old train cart and separate building that works as the small towns visitors center. Overall a cool small Kentucky town spot and a good place to take a rest stop if needed. Great place for first time campers!…read more We did our first tent camping trip here and it was the perfect place for us. Staff was extremely nice and helpful with any questions that we had. We stayed for 2 nights and it was about 44 dollars which wasn't bad at all Toilets and showers were located on the backside of the little store. They were fine but got muddy since it rained which wasn't a big deal. They also had porta potty's further back so those that were further away didn't have to go too far. They had a little restaurant quick food area inside the shop that had breakfast, lunch and dinner items. We were next to the road but it was not too busy and there was a good amount of space between the sights. There was a bunch of families and everyone seemed to be having a good time. There are quiet hours starting at 10pm and everyone respected it. Not too far from hikes that we went on and we will definitely be back!

My friends and I had a rare weekend where we were all free to go on a trip to the RRG. This is an 8+ hour drive for us, and we were excited to spend the holiday weekend here. WELL. The website where we booked (Hipcamp) said there was indoor camping available. The owner, David, called me and let me know that actually, the campsite was booked up because of Rocktoberfest and there was actually no availability. However, David is absolutely amazing and since he wanted us to have a good memory of LOTA, he gave us a HUGE upgrade to a private room in the Hanger, as well as a camper in the back. He totally saved the trip, and he is a delightful person, to boot. You cannot ask for a more communicative, kind, and helpful host. I am seriously impressed by his competence and willingness to help us out, and I will be booking at LOTA from now on!

I think you have to request for these for additional charge. I am not very picky on where I stay when I go hiking as long as it's clean. I will rate the quality of service and how smooth my transaction with the front desk and booking/ communication with this hotel 5/5. However, for the hotel itself I have to rate it 2/5 because of the missing basic appliances in the room, the room smells like stale smoke even if I asked for a non-smoking room, the shower pressure was so light it's just like dripping water, the internet signal was non- existent like I was back in the 90's, I feel like I was in the boonies because my Verizon is not getting any signal while I was inside the room, and the towels were very hard and has stains. I'm glad I brought my own towels.

Magoffin County is steeped in the history of this country for over 150 years. Many of America's…read morefamilies traveled to or through this area. Forty years ago, several members of the Magoffin County community started marking cemeteries, many which have been abandoned. This developed into honoring founding families of this area. Eventually, the Magoffin County Historical Society was born. Their library is has an extensive collection of books with the information of local families. To help with expenses, the society began compiling and selling books with the genealogies of local surnames, as well as transcriptions of census records, marriage records, and cemeteries. These publications are available on the website. At one time in the Historical Society's history they had over 1,000 members. Today, Dorothy Shepherd mans the helm as the lead researcher. She is there most days, but if you plan a trip, it would be best to call her and set up an appointment. If you are researching surnames in eastern Kentucky, a stop at the Magoffin County Historical Society is a must.
