We stopped in for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Gaby's is a nice old style building both inside and out that's decorated very nicely. The bar was completely open so we had our choice of seats. I thought the menu was typical for a Mexican place; large and varied. I got a Stone IPA on tap and decided to order a pork burrito. The chips were fresh and the salsa was very good but not real spicy. My burrito came out and it wasn't what I expected. There were no black or refried beans nor sour cream on the side. The beans were inside the burrito and the sour cream was drizzled (if that's the right verb) over the burrito; pic enclosed. I've got this thing about hot food. Unless it's ice cream or gazpacho it had better come out hot. I tried my burrito. The end was warm but the more I dug into the center the cooler it got. I asked them to heat it up. You never know how that is going to work out but after a while they gave me a whole new burrito that was quite hot; very nice on their part. I find this a lot in restaurants where premade food needs to be heated up but really isn't. I'm thinking that most people settle for underheated food. Either they are not wanting to wait for the reheat, too hungry to wait, or don't want to suffer any kitchen retribution. Whatever the reason I find it happens a lot. End of rant. Gaby's is worth going to. All in all a good experience. read more

Stopped at this cute place in Ellenville for lunch on a recent trip to the Catskills. It's a pretty large restaurant with a few tables outside in the front, although too cold for that today. Once inside you enter a nicely decorated dining area. The bar is a bit farther down with what looked like a private party room in the rear. There were only a few patrons at the bar where we opted to sit & most were watching a soccer game on TV. Our bartender was very personal & brought us a dish of fresh tortilla chips & a small bowl of salsa. When I asked for more salsa (because these chips were delicious), he immediately brought a bigger bowl. They also had a couple of craft beers on tap make we three craft beer drinkers happy. I opted for the Enchilatas poblanos with rice & black beans. It came out rather quickly & was quite delicious, although it could have been hotter. Other than the temp the food came out, it was one of the best Mexican lunches I've had in a long time! I will definitely return on another visit. read more

Food and drinks good. Big positions. But as of overall service, we didn't feel welcomed. Was constantly asked if we are ready for the check and if we needed to go boxes. We had ordered a pitcher of margaritas. So while we were enjoying or food and drinks they started moving chairs away from our table, pushing another table onto ours. Clearing our table while sitting up the new table. I'm sorry that we an inconvenience and in your way. It will never happen again. I guess they don't care if their customers leave by feeling unwelcomed and drive drunk. read more

Gaby's is absolutely one of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. I have been going there for several years now, and have always had great experiences. Reservations are recommended, but not always necessary. The menu offers delicious, healthy portions (I always take food home) with a wide variety of mostly Mexican dishes. Drinks are colorful and tasty, and most important, there is an attentive staff. The owner is visible on the floor always, directing staff accordingly. He definitely takes pride in the place, and it is obvious he aims to please. One minor thing that always impresses me is when there is wait staff walking around refilling water glasses and/or coffee, and Gaby's has this covered as well. The layout is a big, open room with a very high ceiling, and Mexican theme all about. A lengthy bar with a wide variety of bottles flanks the back right side, leading to a satellite dining area in the rear. The place is nicely dimmed, creating an ambiance for a pleasant dining experience. During warmer weather there is room for a few tables for outside dining as well. Just doors away is the Shadowland Theatre, as well as an assortment of other restaurants and pizzerias, so there is a hint of nightlife and bustle. Ellenville ranks alongside Walden as a town that gets a bad rap, but this establishment is definitely a bright spot and worthy of your time. Bon appetite! read more

I happened to be In town during lunchtime on a weekday and needed some lunch, and as far as I could tell it was one of very few places open on the main drag. It's a big airy comfortable space. The service was friendly and prompt. The Choi Chang as were fine and fresh, could have been more flavorful, the black beans were good. The chips were warm and seemed fresh. The salsa was a little watery but also seemed fresh and had good flavor. They have Jarritos and Mexican coke. There's lots of parking on the street, or at least there was around midday on a weekday. They have lots of random stuff that doesn't seem strictly Mexican, like chicken parm and chicken Caesar wraps, so it seems like they're trying to cater to everyone in town, which I guess makes sense. read more

Great Mexican restaurant. The food is tasty and comes out fast. It can be very busy in there, so id recommend a reservation.

This place was hopping for lunch on MLK day Lots of families and kids. Friendly, fast service. I sat at the bar, got a Cobb salad ($9) with grilled chicken ($3). All good! Good sized serving, baby greens, very content. Only way to improve - terrible winter tomatoes, chicken a tad dry. But very popular, I would go again for sure.... Lots of traditional Mexican fare, reasonable prices, and a house margarita with pineapple infused tequila. read more

Wen't upstate for the weekend with some friends and were in search of a place to satisfy our craving for Mexican cuisine. We found Gaby's on the main strip with a number of other restaurants littered throughout Canal street. At first glance the menu looks quite pricey for what you would typically expect from a Mexican restaurant. We ordered a pitcher of white sangria to start us off (very good price for a pitcher). We started with the chips and guacamole which they make at your table side. The Guacamole had a nice kick to it and was very fresh and tasty. For our meals we ordered the Steak tostada's, Chicken Quesadilla, Cobb Salad with Chicken, and a steak burrito. Everything was very tasty and the portions were quite generous. Definitely recommend this restaurant especially in area's where there isn't much to choose from. read more

Atmosphere is good, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. For an appetizer we shared a Quesadilla and that was good. However, for the main dinner, I had the Pernil. The pork was very bland, and the meat did not fall apart like it's supposed to. I taked my friend's chicken dish and that was also lacking in basic spices (salt, pepper, etc) There was nothing exceptional at all about this place. read more

The reason I gave 3 star review is the staff needs more knowledge of menu. Ordered paia was told after waitress returned it would take 45 minutes. Then Ordered shrimp mia was not asked if mild or spicy. Dish arrived was very spicy. Almost returned it but other people we were with had their food all theirs was very good. Made 6:15 reservation and was seated at 6:30. Very noisy and crowded. Took a few minutes to order a drink and another few for appetizer. Waitress was nice but we could barely finish our food before the hostess arrived with our check. No one asked if we wanted dessert or coffee, which I did want. By 7:25 we were being asked to leave because others were waiting for a table. If you are looking for a relaxing meal, don't go to Gabby's. In over 50 years of dining out, this was the first time I've literally been pushed out the door. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the other restaurants on the same street. read more

Ive eaten lunch here and done take out dinner. The guac is really really good, no doubt about it. I usually have a quesadilla (chicken), and its good as well. Not the best I've ever had, but good. Did outdoor dining there yesterday with a friend and lots of kids (hers and mine). We were planning to do takeout but saw the tables outside in the shade, nicely spaced apart, and decided to sit and enjoy ourselves. Everything was delicious and fresh. Staff wore masks and everything was served in to-go containers which felt very safe and sanitary. Highly recommend the shrimp tostadas and fried plantains. read more
