The restaurant is advertised as Tex-Mex but the only hot sauce available was Tabasco plus something homemade for which they up-charged but lacked any flavor. Let me start by saying the owner is incredibly accommodating and genuinely generous. From the moment we sat down, he made us feel welcome. My brother-in-law ordered the combo with mixed meats and seafood for one, and it was absolutely amazing fresh, flavorful, and more than enough food. I ordered the fajitas; they were good, but next time I'd skip those and go straight for the nachos and the tostadas, which looked outstanding. Before we even finished scanning the menu, the owner brought out food for the baby on the house, which was such a thoughtful and appreciated gesture. We found this charming place on our way back to Westchester from Ithaca. We were getting closer to home and we were starving. This place popped up just off our route and I'm so glad it did. Being from Texas, it's hard to find good Tex-Mex and Mexican food. El Sombrero fit the bill. Inside, it looks like any place we might go for Tex-Mex in Texas. Our waiter, Elias, was absolutely amazing! The top shelf margarita was truly top shelf. It was seriously one of the best I've had. One thing that sets this place apart from so many restaurants... The guy who owns it is a butcher. They have the most amazing cuts of meat and they know how to prepare them. I got the mixed fajitas, while my husband got the steak. The cuts of meat were perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked in both our meals. I asked Elias to bring me the hottest hot sauce they have and what he brought me was so good that I wished I had some for home. I mentioned this to him and when he brought us the check, he brought me some to take home! What a sweetheart! Such a great hidden gem! We decided to visit while staying upstate on vacation. The interior decor is very Tex-Mex style. Staff were super friendly and the cocktails were fresh and delicious. It's a large place with plenty of comfortable seating and cute decor. The service was impeccable, our servers checked on us often, as did the manager/ owner. Amazing Tex-Mex in the Catskills with great service! The owner, Luis, makes it a point to greet every customer himself. I had the empanadas as an appetizer and they were delicious! Was seated at high top by the bar. Bartender-waiter took our order. We literally never seen him again. A young man brought our drinks. Same boy brought our food. Went entire meal and afterwards without a drink. An observant customer, told a female waiter... I think those people need something. Ridiculous. Take the order. Bring the drinks. Bring the food. Come back within a min or two and make sure the order is correct. Check back in a bit later to see if we need another drink or something else. The guy never came back.. Until it was time to get the dishes and finally.... Eventually showed up with the check for us to pay. 56 years old. Second review I've ever left in my life and definitely the worst severe from the bar. Next time we will sit with the waitresses.... Never again by the bar. I'm sure this will go absolutely no where. They are always at the door together, they know your name always make you feel welcome not just a one time greeting. We eat out together regularly & enjoy good food, & service. She compared Sombrero to other places we have gone. She particularly said, the owners are sweethearts, they introduce themselves, bring you a complimentary delicious appetizer ( small toasted corn taco with shredded meat or a baby toasted empanada chicken or ground beef), this place is a lot of fun. Mixed with young, middle aged & elderly customers. So went back last Saturday for a Birthday dinner with 11 family members ,unfortunately , had a very different experience. Waited 45 minutes to an hour for our dinners to come out, the 2 tables of 4 around us each ate , had a birthday candle and left before we ever got our food !! The waiter kept saying there was an issue in the kitchen, but i am guessing he never even put our order in . When the dinners came, 2 were fajitas ,and were served with no tortilla's , when we asked , he said they were cooking them. ? Really, tortillas at a Mexican restaurant. ? Took another 5 to 10 minutes for them to arrive , by then the meat was no longer sizzling LOL We did expect , at least, one of the owners to come over and apologize for the extremely long delay in getting us the food , but nope . The refried beans were more like tasteless bean soup. All these locals telling me this place is great so I gave it a spin. I'd go back for the chicken fajita but I'd be overpaying because the rice and beans don't cut it. What a great spot for a family! The kids (1 and 4) were all taken care and loved the food, as well as the karaoke in the adjoining room! My wife is vegetarian and was very happy with her burrito. We got the Sombrero Grill Platter for 2. Everything on it was so good. It came with rice and beans too. The owner was very welcoming. He checked on our table to make sure we were being taken care of. Our waitress was fairly new but she was right on top of things. Our friends that dined with us were very happy with their meals too. My family and I dined here while we stayed at The Kartrite Resort & Waterpark. We were celebrating my twin nieces 20th birthday. The service and food were great! In the Sampler you get St. Louis Ribs, BBQ Short Ribs, Grilled Skirt Steak ( my favorite), grilled chicken breast, hot sausages, jumbo shrimps, tortillas, and sides of rice and beans! Everything on the platter was flavorful, juicy, and delicious! Their fish tacos was also well-seasoned, definitely a must-try if you are a seafood lover! When we came in it was a bit too loud for us but although they had just closed the larger dining area prior to our arrival they graciously accommodated us in the larger dining area near the water fountain. The food was not only delicious but we didn't have to wait forever to get served. Their nachos are definitely on point!!! The ribs and steak were so very juicy and super tender. The yellow rice was very flavorful and the beans were perfect. The portions are more than enough to satisfy. The presentation of the food was also impressive. The owner and his staff were very attentive, friendly, and professional. The decor and ambiance rounded out our dining experience. I highly recommend this establishment for any occasion. Flautas are made with chicken tenders & cheese instead with no sour cream & old lettuce. Paid almost $100 on what ?! Nothing I could enjoy. We were staying at a indoor water resort near by and wanted to do Mexican food for one of the nights. This place was busy when we arrived but the space is utilized in a non optimal way. There were large open spaces that had just people waiting to be sat down. We were seated after 15 mins. Chips and salsa was included. The salsa was watered down. Our drinks took awhile to arrive. We had ordered a pitcher of sangria, and a few beers. We did not even receive waters. I ordered the cheese enchiladas and I have to say the portions were small and the enchiladas were bland. The rice was cold and the beans were watery too. We did order tres leches dessert and I have to say that was the best thing we had ate all night.
