Good! I think a bit out of context but very good. When I think Mexican food I think vinyl booths, basket of chips and great Ameri-Mex food. It is one of my favorites! I don't think I have ever had a bad Mexican meal from the most humble establishment (including a push cart or hatchback in Baha) to Gaby's, which is likely the greatest attempt to make this menu posh. Same food. Burrito. Food cart=good, Gaby's=good; sure the sour cream is artistically drizzled and the plate is pretty, but it is still. . . a burrito. The prices match the rent, Rhinebeck is not the 1 horse town it used to be, Maserati driving weekenders crowd the streets where Clinton nuptials took place. I did enjoy the service, very friendly and attentive. The table-side guacamole preparation and after dinner Tequila was also an enjoyable feature. read more

There's a reason you can get a table here without a wait on a Saturday night... I have dined here multiple times before and never had a problem but after tonight I will not be returning. Ordered the sangria and it was not right. It tasted bad and off. I asked the waitress for another drink and told her it was not right and she would not take it off my bill or give another drink. Spoke to the manager and he says "everyone have different tastes" and was extremely rude. I am always kind and polite and whenever I've had problems at a restaurant with food or drink of any sorts the problems have always been taken care of... not the case here. After the extremely rude encounter with the manager it left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the night. Our food was fine nothing special and not a lot of flavor. Unfortunately we will not be returning. Very wrong and very rude encounter. read more

Ohhh gosh. I SO want this to be a higher star rating. I am rating 3 stars because they are so nice and I feel bad for them. And the booze. The good: Fresh food, tasty cocktails, (yum yum pineapple tequila!) and very very nice staff. The bad: Dude there is NO FLAVOR. Seriously. No salt. No spice. It is madness. The carnitas tacos, for example, seem fresh and look yummy - they come smothered in salsa and guacamole - but they might as well just be plain tomatoes and avocados. Are they catering to old people? This little gem is tucked on a side street in Rhinebeck. We were immediately greeted and seated in this nicely decorated and amazing clean resturant. The food is tasty and beautifully served . Gabys lost a customer. I'll never go back to gabys. Bubby's in red hook has much better Mexican food anyways .... I will NEVER & my family will NEVER go to gabys again!!! I used to always get takeout. And I always tipped generously even on takeout. Sometimes I would sit and eat alone. I came in one night. I sat alone and ordered ONE margarita. When I finished the drink, I asked the waitress to pour a little water into my glass. I was there about 44 minutes. I paid my check tipping over 30% for ONE DRINK. As I was pulling out of the parking lot, the waitress ran up To my car and pounded on my window. She was accusing me of stealing the drink. I looked over at the table outside where I had been drinking, and sure enough, my glass was STILL sitting on the table. I pointed towards the drink, and said, no my glass right there on the table. She looked into my car, it was obvious there were no cups or glasses in the car. How could I have taken the drink when I ordered ONE single Drink and was there for 45 mins. How does that make sense. I immediately parked again, got out of the car; and complained to the manager. I will leave this bad review on every single website. How dare you treat a good loyal customer like that. Gaby's has been open for awhile, but I had only been here once before this more recent time and it was during its first month. All I ordered that time was a margarita, and I shared some chips with someone else. This more recent time, I ordered chicken enchiladas as a main dish and guacamole as an appetizer. The guacamole was great-they made it fresh at your table. A little more limey than I'm used to but still tasty. The chicken enchiladas were alright, definitely not the best I've had but not the worst. I think they were a bit soggy, but the sauce was very good. I didn't try any of the drinks again, but others have told me they're great. I'll have to come back and try some of the margaritas. The waitress was lovely and very attentive! OMG, what an amazing find! Just go if you like authentic Mexican flavors, not fake Americanized Mex. Their entire kitchen staff is originally from Mexico, so they belt out amazing dishes. We tried a whole bunch of things and everything left us feeling wow. Their house habanero sauce should be bottled and franchised, its SO GOOD! Portions are large and staff is very nice. One of the nicest Mexican restaurants I've been to in the area. The music level is low key, and in combination with the decor and ambiance takes you to one of the finest reastaurants in Mexico City. Visited on Father's Day. Restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated. We were seated outside. I had the red sangria and it was pretty standard. My husband and I ordered the plaintains as an app and they were very good. I had the mole enchilada with chicken. The portion is very large but so are the prices. The mole sauce wasn't as spicy as I would have thought. The food lacked cheese and sour cream. My husband had the fajitas. He enjoyed his entree but felt it lacked the basics including sour cream and shredded lettuce and cheese. Every little item is charged. Sour cream is $2.50. We refused to pay a ridiculous amount of $$ for something we felt should be standard at a Mexican restaurant. Overall the food was decent. First time going here today based upon hearing from a friend we should try this place out. The waitress was unfriendly, abrupt, and didn't even take the time to introduce herself with a name. We saw her one time when she took our order and that was it. At the end of the meal which the food was the only positive part of this establishment so props to the kitchen staff, they add an 18% gratuity. There are no signs posted that they add a gratuity without you knowing. The staff that approached us with the exception of the food runner was rude and dismissive, annoyed by our requests (like asking for a napkin or glass of water). We were a group of 5-6 people, they brought the complimentary chips and salsa. We asked for enough for the table so no one was excluded, and ended up being charged and also received a complimentary eye roll for asking! Very kind. My husband and I started off with some Mexican sodas; pre-bottled pineapple and apple flavored were the ones we chose; they were both really great! We actually stopped at a Mexican grocer on the way home to buy more of the pineapple one. We ordered guacamole and chips as an appetizer which I thought was a little overpriced. $12 is definitely the most I've ever spent for a bowl of guacamole and we're Mexican food enthusiasts. Although I wasn't satisfied with the price it was very creamy and tasty. I ordered the pork burrito and it was massive! It was seasoned good and pretty juicy but what I liked the most was the orange poblano sauce. It was AMAZING!! I would literally eat a bowl of that sauce. My husband ordered the tamales with rice and beans. The beans were not that great, under seasoned but the tamales were good. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. We love this place!! We just moved to NY from Los Angeles, and I was so worried we weren't going to be able to find a good burrito.... I was wrong!!! This place is fantastic. The margaritas are some of the best I've had. (Which is even hard to find in LA.) They don't use sour mix, and they make their own pineapple tequila! The servers are really friendly, and so is the bartender/owner. The food is always fresh. They make the guacamole right at your table. I'm not sure quite how they do it, but the food always seems healthier than most Mexican food I've had... It has just the right amount of cheese, etc. AND they're open ALL the time! Unlike almost any other restaurant in this town! I will admit, it is on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for- high quality, tasty food and good service. For this one, we were trying to spice it up a little and try out the locally famous gaby's cafe mexican bar and grill (its a cafe, a bar, and a grill, quite impressive from the get-go however becky was a little confused at the concept). The formerly known "jk47", NOW "Jonathan" due to his status as a sophisticated college scholar noted the delectable atmosphere above all. Now onto the platõ principàl. We were first awestruck when we received chips and salsa as complimentary snacking. Becky (my beloved girlfriend) and i got chicken burritos while Jonathan got a chicken quesadilla.... We couldnt think of a single complaint when it came to these main dishes. We elected to sit outdoors and soak in the The external atmosphere. The external feng shui brought on a calm and relaxing meal between me, becky, and our overseer Jonathan. The only small complaint we had was that our waitress has quite some difficulty splitting our bills (i dont pay for my beloved girlfriend because its "2016 and she can be an independent female") really? Ok, so here's another Mexican restaurant review. Again, only 1 star because that's the lowest it will let me give. The only thing Gaby's has going for it is that it's a nice looking restaurant, the Salsa and coffee were tasty, Other than that, I got nothing. We ordered the skirt steak burrito, 3 tacos (chicken and pork) and chicken and pork chimichangas. Only one item came with rice and black beans. Not refried, just black beans. Now, I love me a good black bean, but these were straight outta da can black beans. No flavor, nothing. The rice was the same, flavorless. It had a faded orange-ish color to it , like it used to have some saffron in it , but the last people that didn't eat it, they washed it and served it to us. I just can't understand if your calling it Mexican food, where is the flavor? The taco shells or whatever you want to call them, tasted like what a dirty diaper smells like and that's CRAP! The so called grilled chicken in side must've been cooked on a George Foreman grillah and they forgot to add seasoning. And don't get me started on the pork. Again , no flavor, no taste, nothing. Unless you want to call the gigantic lump of pig fat that got caught in my throat flavor, because I feel like it's still stuck in there and I've been burpin that shit up since I left the restaurant 3 HOURS AGO!! The chimichangas lacked any flavor as well, but the plating was pretty. It's too bad we don't drink, because i think the food tastes better at Gaby's when you do drink. The table next to us was having a blast and eating everything right up. Our waitress was as bland as the food itself . Needless to say, if I want real Mexican food, I'm going to the freezer section at Shoprite, just kidding. But you'll never find me back at Gaby's, that's for sure! read more

The Chorizo tacos were very reasonably priced and delicious, though I do recommend you order them "spicy" because the food I've had at the Ellenville iteration of Gaby's has been on the bland side. Without a doubt the ingredients are very fresh. In addition to the solid food and friendly service the margaritas were fairly strong. Highly recommended as the best Mexican food I've had in the area. This was my second visit and most likely last. It was a flavor disappointment. I ordered a pork burrito and my husband ordered a chicken chimichunga. The flavor was missing. Gaby's is a low-key, super friendly place for great Mexican food in Rhinebeck. I usually get the Nachos ala Gaby or the chimichangas. The guacamole is excellent and is prepared to your taste, tableside. When we first started going there 7 years ago or so, and in the early days when we more regular, we would often get a complimentary small tequila shot as an after dinner drink - they have tequila infused with pineapple that's delicious. One final thing, the staff there is super understanding and generous with kids. It's nice to go somewhere you know you won't get dirty looks if your rugrat spins out a bit. read more

Happened across Gabby's cafe today while visiting Rhinebeck. Me and my wife stopped in there about 12 o'clock for lunch. Started with guacamole which was the largest order I've ever gotten in a Mexican restaurant. We ordered it medium and it was a little on the spicy side but still very good. For the meal I ordered the spinach and portobello mushroom quesadilla while my wife ordered chicken chimichangas. Wow! The food was absolutely amazing, fresh and delicious and the sangria was fantastic as well. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was very laid back and comfortable. The food was OK. I would rather go to a cheaper, paper napkin type Mexican place, and enjoy tastier food for much less. I think since it is Rhinebeck it has to be at a certain price point and have a more formal atmosphere. Complimentary chips and salsa, which I find hospitable. But the chips were out of a bag and the salsa did not taste very flavorful or fresh. I am vegan and ordered the vegetable quesadilla with corn tortillas instead of flour (just my preference). I found the vegetables to be beautifully charred, but not very flavorful. It could just be my taste but I prefer vegetables to be more cooked and with more seasoning. The carrots were chopped nicely but crunchy, the zucchini was on the raw side. I believe the only seasoning was salt. It seemed the vegetables were prepared without oil, which is healthy... but the meal felt really lean and unsatisfying to me. I asked for some hot sauce, which was very tasty! Seemed to be habanero? Could not wait just to get out of there! Came in on a Saturday around 5pm, everything else in Rhinebeck was packed! There was one other table at Gabys... should have been skeptical, but went in anyway. First, the smell of amonia was overwhelming. Think cat-pee. The stained carpet was also a nice touch. When presented with the menu, I knew we were in trouble. $17 for a burrito!? My goal from that point on was to get out as quickly as possible. Our waiter also hovered in the dining room though the entire meal, staring at us. I felt awkward even trying to tell my boyfriend how much I disliked the food. What if he could read lips? The experience was almost laughable, and we have been laughing about it since. The salsa and chips that came to the table were flavorless. V8 with a little cilantro in it? Store bought chips. We stuck with water by the way! I opted for the $9 vegetarian tacos, how can you go wrong, right? WRONG. Raw carrots, overcooked onions and zucchini in a untreated (not grilled/warmed) corn tortilla, with the same muddy salsa and I think what was supposed to be guacamole. The entire thing was flavorless, cold, mushy, and completely unappetizing. My boyfriend had a chicken burrito and he gave that a 2/10. Sauce on top was sweet and spicy, rice over cooked, and burrito was 2 inches of each filling in a row. Not a homogeneous burrito. Also, $15!! Rhinebeck has such great options for dining, Gaby's will not last long! Seems great Mexican food always comes off a grill or food truck with fresh ingredients. I learned my lesson. read more

Had dinner at Gaby's last night. Salsa plain, chips okay, Taco salad very plain unless you add the 3 side sauces provided. Black beans and rice were devoid of any seasoning --even salt. Taco filling had some flavor. Wait staff nice and restaurant clean. Rhinebeck has some wonderful ethnic restaurants but this one should be on your "MUST MISS" list unless you are prepping for a colonoscopy, and need to be on a bland diet. read more

Did I mention the prices? $18.50 for a wet carne asada burrito (my favorite burrito in Oakland is less than $6 for comparison). Took 20 minutes to get drinks and then at least an hour to get our food after we ordered. We're there for almost an hour and a half and only had drinks. Margaritas were really good though.
