We LOVE Gaby's! We eat here at least 3x a month! My family is vegan and this place got it right. We are able to adjust the ingredients to our vegan preference. The veggies are fresh, not frozen. I go to Gaby's at least once a week, and I usually have the same thing; spicy guacamole, a couple grilled jalapeños, and Gaby's Nachos. I also typically get a margarita straight up. I really enjoy the food, and I especially like sitting outside. I think their guacamole and their namesake nachos are the best around. read more

Service is friendly and competent. In nice weather dining outside is an option , tho the view of a parking lot is nothing special. I find the food good and have eaten here 4-5 times with family in the past year. This last visit was mid-afternoon on a Wednesday and the service was terrible even though the place was empty. We found the waitstaff to be unapologetic and shockingly slow while waiting 40 minutes for three chicken tacos. They brought out our side of rice and beans at the one hour and twenty mark just as we we signing the check and leaving. Not a place to take hungry kids into- even the plain cheese quesadilla we ordered for the kids took over thirty minutes. The bus boy and waitress smelled like marijuana when we walked in, so some possibility exits they were partaking in some pre-shift relaxants. Who knows, but they were certainly out of it. This restaurant is so great. I can't say enough good things about it! Let's start with my first experience at Gaby's. My friends and I stopped in for margaritas before a movie. We sat at the tables in the bar area. The host brought drink menus and before we could blink, we had chips and fresh salsa on the table and our water glasses were being filled. Our margaritas we ordered were delicious (and heavy-handed). We also asked if they had guacamole but decided we didn't want to pay the $11 since we were only getting drinks. They ended up bringing us some on the house and it was delicious. We left very happy (and a little buzzed) and vowed to come back soon. The second time I went was for dinner with a party of 7. I've noticed that restaurants in Rhinebeck are not always accomodating to larger groups, so we were really happy to see a place that could seat all of us. They sat us right away. The restaurant was full but we lucked out because a large party had just left. Our drinks were ordered right when we sat down and arrived at our table promptly. Since I'd already tried the margarita (delicious) I decided to go with a mojito this time. It comes with a sugar cane swizzle stick, which I thought was a nice touch. This was one of the best (and strongest) mojitos I've ever had. Loved it. After the drinks came they took our orders ( I ordered the chicken tamales platter). While we waited for food, fresh chips and salsa were brought to the table. Every time the chips or salsa ran low, new ones came out. The staff was very attentive to us and made us feel like valued customers. Food came and it was totally amazing. The tamales were cooked to perfection and served with a salsa verde that was to die for. Every one else in our group raved about their food too. The best meal in our group was the steak fajitas. They were perfectly grilled and served with a TON of fresh veggies. You could easily make 2 or 3 meals out of it. After dinner, the waitress cleared our dishes and then set forks out on the table. We all looked at each other, puzzled. Then the host/owner brought out a piece of chocolate cheesecake and lemon-coconut cake, both on the house. Both were so good. The cheesecake melted in your mouth and had just the right amount of chocolate and the lemon cake was fluffy and airy. And as if the night couldn't get any better, the host came by again, this time with shots of pineapple tequila for all of us, and again, they were on the house. We were SO impressed by the food, service, and hospitality of this restaurant. I can't wait to go back. I recommend it to all of my friends and I recommend it to you too. Go there. If you haven't been to Gaby's, you need to make it happen! I have other local spots I go when I am looking for quick, cheap Mexican (well...Tex/Mex really), and even one spot in Mid-Town Kingston where I get my food out of a truck and sit in folding chairs to enjoy, but Gaby's is my favorite place to relax and have guacamole prepared table-side or savor perfectly cooked and seasoned fillings in my quesadilla or tacos. Lunch prices are especially reasonable. Definitely a favorite spot! read more

Came here for the first time to enjoy local Mexican food. After ordering a half pitcher mojito, the waiter comes out with what appeared to be a margarita. I took a few sips And politely said we ordered a mojito. The waiter who doesn't speak English well, rudely said you guys did not and marched off without apologizing. He blamed us, basically calling me a liar. I told him I will not come back to this place and he said "GOOD!" The chips with guacamole were not fresh. Great food at a fair price. The margaritas are on point and the food is delicious. The burritos are massive, the pollo de mayo is savory and the pork is so tender it could be cut with a fork. We have also been fortunate to be seated on the weekends, but I would recommend calling ahead to be safe. And how could I forget the pineapple infused tequila? It's the perfect "dessert" after a delicious meal. I have been many times and I have never had a negative experience as one or two others here have. Went here on a date night and we were pleasantly surprised. We always appreciate when Mexican restaurants provide chips and salsa as a starter, and the salsa was fantastic (enough bite for my fiancé who likes spicy, but not too spicy for me). The food was absolutely delicious. We both got the burrito supremo which was probably one of the best burritos I've ever had. It came with soup or salad, I got black bean soup, which was also fantastic. The burrito was so large, I took half home. Had it for lunch the next day and it was still great. For desert, we shared a slice of coconut lemon cake and it was heavenly. The cake was beyond wonderful. The setting is more upscale than most Mexican restaurants. Great for date nights, and I believe there was a business-related dinner going on behind us. The only thing I was thrown off by was the price, which was $17 for the burrito and soup or salad. We have tried most every mexican dish they offer and as I read some of these 3 star or lower ratings, I think to myself, these people couldn't give any restaurant a five star rating." It's not spicey enough, it's too spicey, it's too pricey, it's too noisy, it's too crowded"....no pleasing some people. I've been here quite a few times. The food has always been great; however, the service is very hit and miss (sometimes friendly, sometimes sullen). Worst experience was this past Tuesday (8/13/13). We asked to be seated outside (we were the only ones outside - that should have been a warning). A "waiter" came over promptly and took our drink order. "Waiter" is in quotes because I think he was more of a busboy, as we never saw him again-except to take in our food later when it started to rain. He was the only one that was friendly that evening. After over 20 minutes, I was fuming and went inside to search for someone to take our order-I wanted to just pay for drinks and leave, but my companion was hoping to eat. After going inside and searching for someone for even longer, someone came from the kitchen and I mentioned that we've been waiting for a long time and feel like we've been forgotten. He said "No!" and came outside to take our order. No apologies, smiles, comments - nothing. I was really annoyed! I understand mistakes can happen, but I don't want to feel like a chump and be treated like an after thought. It will be a long while before I go back to Gaby's. Shame really, because as I mentioned - the food has always been good. read more

Our last dinner we found a hair in our burrito, we brought it to our waitress's attention and she never apologized but said it didn't look like the cook staffs. Just returned from Gaby's celebrating our 23 yr anniversary. This is our first time there. We had heard from others what a great place it was. Our experience- the atmosphere was very nice, the margaritas were great, the food was pretty good but the service was terrible. Our waiter took our order, (forgot to deliver our drinks) and disappeared for the rest of the night. Someone else delivered dinner. We were never asked if we needed anything else, like another drink, was everything ok, would you like coffee, desert or your check. Gone for the night (only taking orders at other tables). We had to ask at the bar for a box for left overs and our check. Then had to return to the bar to pay our tab. The service might have been understandable if they were busy, but that was not the case. The restaurant was only half full and looked to be fully staffed. Don't think were will return. Other Rhinebeck restaurants seem to consistently deliver good food and good service. read more

The atmosphere is nice and a bit festive with vibrant colors and I wished our service was the same, but it was not. There were four of us and we all agreed that our waitress seemed to be in a bad mood. The guacomole was perfect. The chicken fajitas tasted very good and I like the inclusion of zucchini and other veggies that you don't expect. I was surprised that they didn't include sour cream or cheese with them as they are pricey ($19 I believe). They charged me a couple extra dollars for each extra!! Very happy in going to Gabby's. I went with much of my extended family, whom I am sad to say have not enjoyed or even tried any food that is related to Hispanic culture. That being said, we ended up ordering a lot of food. The prices are really reasonable. I split an appetizer of guacamole, salsa, and chips and the proportion was tremendous! Fresh made almost in front of us. Most of my family ordered quesadillas, which were all enjoyed from what I can tell. I ordered the seafood chimichangas (it was a Friday during Lent). There was a terrific amount of flavor, though there just never seems to be enough sauce for those thirsty things. They were different style than I have had in the past, as these resembled little mini burritos, rather than one massive chimichanga. This made it easier to eat to be honest. I also loved the massive spoonfuls of beans and rice that were given. Will likely eat there again, my family loved it, so glad a place like this exists in the Hudson Valley area! read more

We want to love this place since we love Mexican food but the food and service are really so-so. YES, the guacamole is terrific and made tableside which is good. The chips are also always crisp, and maragaritas are good. BUT we waited for over 25 minutes or more for our lunch order to arrive with no explanation or apology. THe chicken mole we shared had a mole that was far too thick and off-tasting, though there were nice pieces of shredded chicken within; the beans and rice ordinary. The price was very reasonable, but it will be a long time before we return, except for guac and drinks. read more

You must go to this lovely spot in Rhinebeck. Mexican food prepared with fresh ingredients is so hard to find. But this wonderful, family owned restaurant does it in spades. We started with guacamole prepared, with a flourish, at our table. For a main course the red snapper with olives and capers was top drawer. And we loved the chile rellenos, generously stuffed with shrimp. The staff was extremely friendly but not overbearing and the restaurant was airy and comfortable. Being off the beaten track in Rhinebeck must be tough. I just hope that people realize what a gem they have tucked away on Garden Street. read more

My Tamales were bland, I've had much better at the Red Hook Farmers Market. And the rice and beans are just ok. I was very much looking forward to my meal here. I LOVE Mexican food. And the food was good. I had veggie chimichangas and they were tasty. My boyfriend had a spinach quesadilla which was also tasty. The guacamole was delicious and I consider myself a guacamole snob. The problem...the service. Horrendous. They were all sweet enough. But none of them knew how to prioritize or multitask. Everything was slow. We had no napkins on our table and we dripped salsa everywhere. The food runner had to point out to our waitress we had no place settings when she brought the appetizer. Other food runners brought food for two other tables to us prior to bringing ours. No one seemed to know what the table numbers were. Our waitress was adorable but completely unprepared every time she went to a table. I watched all of the other diners get choppy service, too. Everyone stood around....blankly. We had to go to the wait station and ask for boxes and our check. They apologized profusely. You are better off at Gypsy Wolf in Woodstock or El Rancho is Saugerties where the servers know what they are doing and the food is just as good. read more

While visiting the quaint town of Rhinebeck, NY, we decided on Mexican for dinner; my favorite. But our visit to Gaby's Cafe quickly turned muy negativo! Our server clearly could not concern herself w/ customer service. News flash, the main reason you are there! This was evident in both the rolling of her eyes when we asked for simple condiments and the way she would barely answer questions we'd have about items on the menu. When we tried to order appetizers, she apparently couldn't handle remembering the two choices we made; guac & chips and a caesar salad, without her note pad as she stopped us mid order to go & retrieve it. When the salad arrived, albeit a decent size, it's minuscule number of croutons in comparison, prompted me to ask for a few more, for which I was ultimately charged a whole dollar extra, without prior notice! My friend ordered a peach margarita, which 1st came out w/ a salted rim instead of sugared, as she had ordered. No big deal, these things happen and it was corrected, but when she took her 1st sip and didn't taste even a hint of peach flavor, she clarified w/ the server that it was, in fact, a peach marg.? When confirmed, she then asked if she could have a bit more of the peach flavoring added as she could not taste it. Another up-charge of $1.00 to the check w/o prior mention, making the already lackluster marg. $10.00! And even after the supposed addition of flavor, still couldn't be distinguished between a plain house marg. & what they were claiming as peach. She literally took the one sip; I took the 2nd to see what she was talking about, she was right, no peach taste at all, and the margarita remained untouched for the rest of the meal without further mention of it from the server! The quesadillas were average, the portabella mushroom burrito would have been good had it been served with the cheese sauce I specifically asked for when placing the order. The guac. and chips were good, but unfortunately, that was really all I would recommend from our experience. As we were settling up on the check, I mentioned to the lady cashing us out, how it was a bit of a surprise to be charged extra for croutons that should have been on the salad to begin with. Her rude response then prompted me to ask for the manager, so imagine my surprise when she said she was the manager! Shocked, as she clearly wasn't willing to satisfy a customer by simply removing the up-charge, I then proceed to inform her, from one experienced server to another, the one representing this restaurant could really use an attitude adjustment if she plans on working with the public for tips, but I quickly assessed that she most likely was not concerned with the experience we had as she seemed to be just as much in need of an attitude adjustment. She must have been the server who trained the other one! Nor was she even remotely willing to budge on the disputed check! So, in closing, I really hope the $ you made on the croutons was worth it!
