GSM is North Georgia's South of the Border version of NY's iconic Fulton Fish Market. Whole fish laid out on ice. Don't get too excited though. Communication can be difficult if you have questions about the fish as english is not their first language. I went late on a Friday afternoon & just don't. Traffic is horrible by 1MM to the nth power. And that late in the day reduced the inventory. Go early & you'll snag a whole Branzino. Maybe a yellow tail snapper or fresh grouper. Later & you'll have river Pompano, Dorado, Corvina & other exotics left to fight over. For a busy fish market it was kept clean & did not smell. They had homemade quarts of chowders & gumbo too but $$$. Giving it 4 stars as prices on the exotics were cheap & they'll clean 'em for you free. read more

There are two great seafood places in Gainesville about a half a mile apart. We have been to both and both are very good. Each has its strengths. Tonight we went to Gainesville Seafood Market. One of the advantages they have is a large parking lot with plenty of room. The food at both places is so close it is hard to call an overall winner. I would agree with someone's post that the clam chowder is a bit thin and could use to be thicker, but they make up for that fact with the sizable amount of Clams. Everything we have tried here was well,prepared and tasted great. Service was fast and efficient. The attitude of the employees was very welcoming and wanted to be sure we had everything we needed. It was a Friday night and close to closing, not much of a crowd, but still over all an enjoyable meal. read more

Haven't been here in nine months because it's like 30 minutes away and unfortunately I doubt I'll be back. The food was still good but they've made some changes that i did not like. They have gotten rid of a couple of offerings. I wanted a grilled tilapia platter which they said they didn't offer any longer. Makes no sense because you can get a mahi mahi platter as well as a couple of other fish choices. Why you can't just substitute tilapia without having to order it all special is just dumb. It's not like tilapia is more expensive. Looking at the menu online in a couple of different places and I saw they had green beans as a side but was told they don't have them. I still liked the coleslaw and got corn on the cob which of course is a separate up charge. The online menus I looked at stated that they still come with French fries but that wasn't the case also. Was told they do white rice, why I got corn instead. Also she asked me about hush puppies and I asked doesn't the platter come with them. She said only two which is what I remembered. My meal didn't come with any and when I asked about them some other woman came and said that because it wasnt included since I had to do the order in a "special" way. Again, they seem hell bent on nickel and dimeing the customers. The lady even admitted that she didn't know why "he" changed so much stuff. I assume "he" is the owner. I don't mind up charges if they make some sort of sense. I can't justify driving out of my way to do business with a restaurant which clearly goes out of its way to alienate customers. Plus the whole interior has been gutted with a large empty area. That's fine I guess except that it's no longer as intimate. It's a shame because aside from Red Lobster and Coastal Breeze which are both ok but too expensive in my opinion, there isn't a good seafood place around. At least not one I've been to. read more

Don't miss - sublime seafood! From the outside it seems like any seafood market but tucked away in the back is the counter to order and a few tables. They were handing out small taster cups of NE clam chowder and lobster bisque - very good and not your typical thick soups. The enticement worked and we ordered a bowl of lobster bisque which had nice chunks of lobster. The mussels in garlic butter was so good that it had all of us fighting for the mussels and the bread to dip it in! Large tasty shucked oysters which included several fresh lemon slices, cocktail sauce and horseradish sauce. The medium sized scallops and large portion of grilled salmon were perfectly cooked. Solid grouper tacos. The large portion of fried flounder was bland but that might be more the flounder's fault - and at our request they switched out the French fries for red potatoes. Hush puppies were very good if you're into them. A few weeks later we returned and placed an order to go. We loved the mussels in garlic butter and scallops so much we ordered it again. It sounded like a great idea to have dinner at Gainesville Seafood Market. On our way there we got stuck by a train. The red lights were flashing so many of the trucks and cars that are local citizens knew to make a U-Turn. We waited...but then decided to follow the cars turning around and then got to drive for miles seeing the airport up close. We did a lot of driving and finally parked in front of the Seafood Market. Glad that we were the only customer and we were offered a taste of gumbo or clam Chowder. The gumbo sealed the deal for me, that and the Grouper fish tacos. Two nice 5" tortillas heaping with fried battered grouper fish chunks made a perfect presentation. Benavides helped with our other selections and the Lovely missus has white Clam Chowder with a side containing two pieces of sweet corn and the side of Cole Slaw she had was a good starter. Unfortunately the one unknown and thus not partaking in our seafood feast was wether vegan options were available. The answer was a subtle yes, but maybe not now... The Gainesville Seafood Gumbo was definitely a winner with chunks of shrimp and fish and sausage. We had a big bowl of it as well as the Grilled Grouper plate and paying extra for Fried Pickles and Onion Rings. The grouper fish was grilled and was a nice fish...but son was wanting to see a bigger amount for the price point. During the food preparation we wandered the aisles of the market and checked out live Maine lobsters and fresh oysters and clams and several kinds of raw cut up fish on ice display cases. Gainesville Seafood Market was actually a fun drive to get to as well as tasting and liking the seafood we chose to have. We vowed to return to this charmingly decorated seafood place. read more

Gainesville seafood market is a good place not exceptional I'd say the quality overall is good. I feel as a fair value but I'm not just jumping in the boat to get back. Mediocracy sometimes is not my thing. The server wanted to spend way too much time talking to me and I really don't go to a restaurant to talk to the server I'm going there to visit with whoever I'm with and enjoy the food. Seafood seems to be the ultimate hit or miss meal. I almost always go alone the first time. Approaching the building will not impress. No worries. Entry will not impress. But be ready for a big hello from the staff. It helps orientate new comers. You find yourself turning toward the voice and start the impressive walk past fresh fish. Ordering was a challenge for me as there are so many things I want to try. I went for the New England Clam Chowder and the Mussels. I wanted to test the basics. Next visit I'll get more adventurous. Clam Chowder flavor was spot on. My only concern is that it was a bit too salty and the consistency was a bit thinner than which I'm accustomed to enjoy. Let's go back to flavor... it was delicious. Mussels... wow... fresh, tasty, lots of bread to soak up the broth. Nothing was missing here. Fat man will return. Not click on the directions and get your butt over here. I had the spicy shrimp boil for 1 that came with 24 shrimp and a ton of sausage and potatoes. The flavor was out of this world and if you love spice, this will light you up in the best way. By far the best shrimp boil I've ever had. My mom, a shrimp connoisseur, said she's never had shrimp so flavorful than her popcorn shrimp was here. And they give you a ton of them along with a fantastic remoulade and homemade cocktail sauce. My dad got the fried shrimp and flounder combo and raved about his as well. The great reviews led me here and boy did it meet my expectations!!! Choosing what to order was so hard because they have such good menu options! From grilled to fried, to soups and sandwiches. If you are seafood lover, they have it all! Along with cooked food, they also sell fresh seafood and seasonings for cooking at home! After about 10 minutes of staring at the menu I went with the shrimp tacos and a bowl of their seafood gumbo. The tacos were a 10/10!! Really. The veggie, shrimp, lemon, and sauce combo was so good! And surprisingly, they are not skimpy tacos. They were a good size to where I don't have room for my gumbo. The gumbo was good, but not as good as the tacos. My friend and I had just finished a 6 mile hike and had built up an appetite. A quick check of Yelp brought us to this restaurant for lunch. Thankfully their dining area is very spread out so it was very easy to have a social distance lunch there. The menu is very large so it took us a few minutes to make our selections. You order at the counter and then take a seat. I decided to order the grilled scallops plate (14.95) with hushpuppies, cole slaw and I substituted a side salad instead of french fries (50 cents upcharge) with an unsweetened ice tea. My friend ordered a mahi mahi poboy (it came fried but the girl behind the counter mentioned that it could be served grilled instead) with french fries and a small Coke. Our food was delivered to our table in a short amount of time and looked fantastic. One taste of my scallops and I was in heaven. They were cooked perfectly (usually I have to find this quality of scallops in a coastal town restaurant). The side salad was superb so I was so happy I did the substitution. I loved the addition of shredded beets on a side salad. I was bit disappointed with the cole slaw only because it lacked flavor... I really think it needed some pepper. I did like that there was not an overbearing sauce/mayo all through it. My friend enjoyed her fried mahi mahi poboy and french fries. We both decided this restaurant was a good choice and if we found ourselves in the area again we would eat here again. Don't let the surrounding area full of auto places and many kinds of small businesses deter you from trying this restaurant. It is kept very clean on the inside and the quality of the seafood is very good. They also have a market that they sell seafood you can purchase and bring home to cook yourself. They also have a coffee corner (but it was not open) and it appears the bakery items are no longer offered. I am sure these items will be back when life gets back to normal again. read more
