This is a review for the Easter brunch only. I'm sure my grandparents would've loved this place if they were still around. You got your white tablecloths, rooms full of retirees, and a vibe that hasn't changed much since the Reagan administration. Unfortunately, there was none of that live music that this place is known for. My family and I came for the Easter brunch buffet @ $55/person. The menu looked great: herb crusted prime rib at the carving station, shrimp and grits, Belgian waffles, deviled eggs, bourbon glazed carrots, cheesecake dessert squares. But the reality was that it's more like an upscale hotel breakfast. Safe, mostly bland, and probably exactly what the "usual" crowd there was looking for. The bacon was overcooked and shriveled. The deviled eggs didn't even have any paprika. And who puts a giant vat of syrup BEFORE the waffles? And their signature strawberry punch would've tasted way better chilled or iced instead of being kept at room temperature. The prime rib was what made it all worth it. It was tender, juicy, cooked just right, and the horseradish took care of their seasoning problem. That carving station is what saves the day along with the fantastic staff. Even the manager was great to talk to. I just wish the rest of the food was better than "meh." A couple of tips: call for reservations, there's no online booking. Parking is annoying because of the app. If you don't have a walker, just use the giant free public lot one block over on Main Street. Also, the "Order" button on their website goes nowhere. Maybe just replace it with "Menu," Luna. Looks like Mother's Day is getting the breakfast buffet brunch encore, so if you want to experience what I did, go for it. I probably won't be back even though the regular menu looks interesting. read more

We went to Luna's not knowing actually much about the restaurant we tried to call and see if we could make a reservation, but nobody answered the phone and nobody returned our phone call. We called a few days before so we took a chance and showed up and hoped that maybe they would have an open reservation. Bingo, lucky for us we got in, but we did go early. We went slightly before 5 o'clock. I actually picked up the restaurant because they said they had a jazz/piano bar, but unfortunately we were sat in the dining room that that was nowhere near the jazz piano bar area so we didn't get to hear it. All we got to hear was people talking in dishes clattering. The lights were pretty right so it wasn't really very romantic. It seemed more like a country club or due to the fact that mostly everyone there was older than us and were in our late 50s. It seemed more like it was even an assisted living facility. I'm not joking. That's how it felt but the food was great. The service was mediocre. it's not that they were slow, but they were in no hurry yet when we got there they got made it seem like we got lucky that somebody canceled and that we needed to hurry and get in and place our order because they had a long list of reservation reservations. The doorman I think it actually should brush up or be shown how to approach or work with patrons. At his age; maybe due to his lack of people skills; he may not be the best person for the position of greeting guests. thanks Miss me where they take reservations they're considered a higher scale of client tell or on an event where it's an occasion like this for Valentine's Day. You definitely want somebody that's greeting you with a smile and kindly letting you know that they have a spot or they don't have a spot and just basically treating you kind and being as polite as possible, regardless of what the available situation was/is. We were very thankful they had a spot, and we went with knowing it may not be available to dine there; but to be making us feel like we were lucky when we chose their restaurant to go to; in turn I felt like they were lucky that we chose their restaurant because there are other restaurants that we could've gone to. We heard some patrons complaining about the timing of food delivery and one table left after a round of cocktails. We aren't sure why they chose to leave but they did. We felt their pricing for the amount of food and offering was a bit steep and not so much in line with others especially since they didn't add any extra flair of roses for the ladies, little to none romantic ambiance and definitely no music which would have been a nice touch. We will try them again when hopefully they will have seating in the jazz bar area and we will call further in advance to plan for the visit so maybe I can update the review and let you know if a 3rd visit is in the future. We don't live close so the second visit will kind of need to be a wow to gain the 3rd one as I feel I'm am fair and my expectations aren't set super high but I definitely feel they dropped the ball for me based on this visit. read more

Oh my gosh!!! I have lived here 3 years. What was I waiting for? Luna's is AWESOME! Great wine list. Food was beyond fantastic! Started with the French Onion Soup, which was delicious. Then moved on to the trout, which was the best I have ever had! It was prepared with smoked Gouda grits, corn, bacon, jalapeño, etc. Chef's kiss! My wife had the recommended filet and she loved it. Friends had the fried oysters and loved them. Met Darryl, the owner, who could not be nicer. He said bring your friends. Well, here's the invite! Come one, come all, for an exceptional meal! Good service, nice ambiance. Food only fair. Her chicken marsala was on mashed potatoes, which might have been ok except the potatoes weren't all that great and dominated the dish. Sauce was also too thick and strong. My rack of lamb was ok except, again, for the ever-present mashed potatoes. Steamed vegies were quite good, and the lamb was done well. My Lady Friends were looking for a place to take me out to dinner Downtown for my birthday and we came across Luna's impressive listing on Yelp. A 5-star dining experience starts with 5-Star people. And Luna's has none other than The Man Benny Boynton tickling 88s to set the mood. Then our Fabulous Hostess McKenzie shepherded us thru an amazingly tasty dining experience. They had the Chicken Marsala and Prime Rib Tips. I had a delicious Shrimp and Scollops. Normally we ask for to-go boxes. But not tonight :) We All Cleaned Our Plates! 5-Stars to the Chef! McKenzie made my birthday by giving me my glass of Red Blend on the House! We Love Luna's. We Will Be Back. She's Earned Her Place on our Dining Rotation. Prime rib not as good as expected, needed different person cutting it. Chicken over cook .over half my piece of prime rib was fat .the desserts were limited and the peach cobbler was not up too par. This was not worth the money spent and we will not be back next time. read more

Service was five star. The owner Darryl greeted us and took the time to chat with us and tell us a little of his history. Very nice! McKenzie was knowledgeable and made excellent suggestions to pair with our meal. We had many servers and they were all attentive. The food was very good. My hubby had the ribeye and enjoyed it. Luna's catered a birthday party at my home in December. The food was amazing and Jason (one of the owners) & his staff were unbelievable. They took care of every detail, from setting up the tables/chairs & linens, to serving the food, to mixing drinks to clean up. The entire experience was seamless. We will definitely use them again because they offer such high quality and great value. We have also eaten at the restaurant in downtown Gainesville. The food is excellent there as well. read more

Nice ambiance but dated. Not sure what it wants to be. Steak, Italian, southern not sure. Had the 4 course tasting menu. The salad 1st course was small, tasting dressing. Pretty ordinary otherwise 2nd course was more like a main. Amberjack with grits and brocolli. This course was nice but the fish was over cooked. Not glistening. Grits pretty good. Brocoli was very good. Next course was the pepper filled with steak and provolone, mash potatoes. Needed salt. 4th course a turtle pie. Very good. Hubby is the French onion soup which was very good. The pork chops he ordered was over cooked. Should have been slightly pink. White and dry. Creme Brulee was good. Had a very good engaging waitress. Drinks were pricy. Not sure if I would go back. We ate here on a recent Saturday after attending a friend's event not far away. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a multi-story building adjacent to the town square in Gainesville, GA. We drove here (though it was close to our hotel) due to the cold. They have a small parking lot adjacent to the building. We got one of the last open spaces. There appeared to be more street parking nearby. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and shown to a table. It appeared to be pretty busy around 7 p.m., so reservations are highly recommended. Our server came by after a few minutes and apologized for the delay. She was obviously busy. She got our drink and meal orders at that point. We skipped any appetizers as our entrees came with side vegetables. I got a steak and my wife got the trout. Both were quite good, though we could not quite finish them. We had minor leftovers to take home. We skipped dessert as we were very full. I enjoyed the meal here and would definitely consider returning were I in the area again. read more

We had actually planned to visit another restaurant in the area; but when we arrived, they were closed, even though Yelp showed open today. Sigh. Anyway, we were lucky enough to happen across Luna. When we walked in, we learned that the restaurant was full due to reservations. Luckily, we could be seated in the bar. The Owner came and showed us to our table; later, he even came back by to check on us. You could tell that he is very customer oriented, as he stopped (and was stopped by) people as he walked through. Everyone seemed to enjoy his company. Then, the food came. As you can see by the pictures, the presentation was appetizing, and we both enjoyed our dishes. We could see why locals frequent this establishment, and I think you'll be happy when you visit, too. read more

Had lunch at Luna's today and ordered the special catch which was unicorn fish. I have never heard of it but gave it a go. Excellent. Some of the best fish I have had. Sautéed with risotto and green beans. Service was spot on Thanks Bud and David!! read more

We had a 5:45 reservation and the restaurant was only 20% full when we arrived. The server quickly came over and took our drink order. The fresh hot rolls arrived soon after we got our drinks. We ordered a few appetizers. I had the onion soup. Boy did it look good, a lot of melted cheeses, the soup was very good but not great. The broth was a bit thin and needed to be a bit richer. It was hot and I finished every drop. My wife shared the crab cakes. They were full of crab with very little filler. My neighbor had the fried green tomatoes. He licked the plate clean. My entree was shrimp and angel hair pasta. It was creamy and tasty but the 5 medium shrimp seemed not to be enough for me. My wife had the chicken marsala. The chicken was a bit too thick and she didn't care for the sauce. She would not order it again. My neighbors had a rib eye and a filet. Both steaks were delicious and cooked perfectly. Dessert was the flan, it was also pretty good. The service was very good with a quiet atmosphere. The price was 225 plus tip for 4 of us with 3 alcoholic drinks and 2 desserts with coffee. read more

First thing's first, Luna's is probably my favorite restaurant in all of Georgia and is among my top five dining experiences in life. I discovered this restaurant in 2020 with my bestfriend on a road trip as we live about an hour and a half away from Gainesville and while I was still living in GA I'd drive out every few months to eat there because it's worth the trip! I have since moved to New York City but still make a habit to come back to GA and make the trek out there once a year. The service is very attentive, friendly and accommodating and always has been. The atmosphere is very elegant yet cozy. My first few times I went I stayed on the jazz bar-y side and they have live music regularly and it is truly so enjoyable. The food is delicious! I haven't ever eaten a bad thing here and at this point I have tried a little over half the menu. The calamari is incredibly fresh and delicious and fried to perfection. It's so difficult to find amazing calamari and they nail it. I do wish there were more options for dipping sauces for it. This most recent trip I ordered both the shrimp and grits and the lamb chops which are my two favorites on the menu. They are incredibly accommodating to my dietary needs and modified the sides to ones I could eat. I was stuffed to the brim! The one thing that I noticed is that the past two times I came to Luna's they no longer had a specialty cocktail menu, which they used to have in 2020 and 2021 and featured original seasonal cocktails. I would like to see the bar service return to that former standard. My most recent trip I asked for a cocktail menu and was told they have a full bar and can make anything and I ordered a St. Germaine spritz. What I received was not that. It was a mixture of prosecco, St. Germain and I assume some form of fruit juice because there was pulp in the glass (citrus juice should be strained unless someone orders like a mojito or something that requires muddling) and it was served in a champagne flute. If you're going to have an open bar and tell people they can order anything, the bartender needs to have a very expansive knowledge of drinks and alcohol which is why I think having a specialized menu is the way to go. A simple Google search would have shared the recipe of a spritz or even just shown how to present it. I ended up pouring my drink into my half full water cup because there was no seltzer added to it and it hadn't been shaken over ice to dilute the sweetness. When I was asked if I wanted another drink I made sure to choose a more classic cocktail that I was certain every bartender would know and that seemed like the right move. My past two visits I was disappointed in the bar experience here and I sincerely hope that management works on cultivating a bar experience like the ones I had in my original visits to once again create a perfect dining experience. read more

My company took us out to Lunas for Lunch (mind you this was my first time going). My initial thought walking in was "it looks very old and dated in here. Like a 90s time capsule". Our waitress was friendly and helpful but this was the best thing I can say about the experience. There was a blonde lady that I believe is the assistant manager, that brought our "rolls" out. She was very rude. One of us passed up their dinner roll, when the person next to him asked if she could have his too the lady was clearly annoyed. We felt like we were being watched the whole time, as if we were causing trouble. Mind you we were not - we were just a chatty group. I ordered the chicken alfredo that was absolutely terrible. I ate the chicken and left the noodles as they had no flavor whatsoever. Needless to say this was my first and last time visiting. read more

Water took forever and the entrees never came. I intended to spend some money as this was my last night with my family before I shoved off to sea for 2 weeks for work (Merchant Mariner). We showed up with our two children. (9 and 7). We waited about 15 minutes for our waters. bread was steady coming. Very accommodating server worked a meal plan that made the kids happy for a while. We ordered a scallop app. When it finally showed up, it was over cooked and tiny. Served on two generous portions of sultry pork belly. Probably should have been a pork belly app. Scallop was almost uneatable. Wife got a lobster bisque which she reports was good, and I ordered a wedge salad which was a C+. All of this was acceptable up until 40 minutes of watching my children eat their salad and the patience becoming thin. We saw three tables around us receive their entrees before us. One being a 6 top. At the 1 hour and 10 minute mark after sitting down, we still had not received our entrees (Prime Rib Eye and a Filet Mignon). I left the table to speak with a manager who was NOT on the floor, but in his office at 7:45 pm on a Saturday night. I explained to him that we have been waiting far too long for our steaks, my children are done. We are not hungry and there simply is no way for us to enjoy our steaks with how long we have had to wait. I kindly asked for the bill. It was at that moment that our steaks were ready. They brought the steaks to the back. He handed me a bill for everything we ordered including the steaks we never received until dinner time was over. He asked us if we wanted them to go. I declined. He brought me a bill for about $90, everything we ordered and ate. We left. Nobody got to the bottom of anything. Did not receive an apology. I don't like free things, probably would have declined a comped drink had they offered it, but I did expect it to be offered. I spent 11 years in the service industry, I probably would have offered the steaks to go, comped them and gave them a free drink or something. They really didn't care. I heard this place was bought out, and had gone down hill. Story checks out. This was out first time here, will not be coming back. Everyone was very kind, they just failed to deliver anything but hot bread, soup and salads. Hell of a last meal before you head to sea. Thanks for reading. read more

This place may be a little dated on the inside but the staff, food and drink are all top notch. I had old fashions with our meal and they had several types of rye whiskey to choose from and they were great. I had the scallop appetizer and when the waitress said it only has one scallop I was skeptical but when it came out it was partnered with the thickest cut of bacon I've ever eaten in my life, I felt full just from this dish. For the main meal I had the fillet and fried lobster tail and they were both cooked to perfection. There is a piano bar with Luna's as well that is across the hall from the restaurant so we went there for dessert and after dinner cocktails and the environment was very cozy. Leather seats and a fireplace to go along with normal seating a bar and a stage for music. Any time to celebrate and we're in Gainesville, Luna's is where we'll be. read more

I was in town for work from Pennsylvania and stopped in to get a light late lunch and it was fantastic! They had multiple seating options to choose from, I went for their small lounge area which gave a nice cozy feeling with a view of the street. I got their Caesar salad and French onion soup, and it was by far the best French onion soup I have ever had and the salad was crisp and fresh! The service was above and beyond as well, the owner even came out to make sure i was satisfied with everything. Highly recommend! read more

Before sharing our feelings here's how it went. We were seated by the hostess and she took our drink orders. Our server brought us menus and drinks then never came back. For the next 30 minutes we saw our server seat another couple, take their drink orders and bring menus, return their drinks and serve bread. Also, served the table beside us a couple of times before coming back to just stand in front of us. Not asking for an order, just stand there......"Check please!" ...... We weren't about to stay where we were not wanted. She didn't even ask why we were leaving. In my opinion, my wife and I felt deliberately ignored, after my wife made eye contact with our server 3x during those 30 minutes before coming back. Unacceptable!! We were treated as if our business wasn't wanted. The environment felt uncomfortable, to US, as well. Maybe it's the "old South" but, we will not be returning nor recommending. read more
