My wife and I were passing through Montgomery, when we decided we were hungry. My wife did two…read moredifferent AI restaurant searches and Martha's Place came up on both searches, as highly recommended and one of the best-known country cooking / soul food spots in Montgomery. Martha's Place it is... Upon arrival, Martha's place looked very upscale. Very nice building and many Mercedes and Cadillacs were parked out front. We started to wonder if we'd wandered into some rich neighborhood where the prices would be sky high! We walked in and a young lady greeted us and told us that lunch was $14 including a drink. GREAT! Everyone in the restaurant was amiable and helpful. (Staff and customers). We went to the buffet and loaded our plates with beautifully fried chicken and meatloaf for our proteins. For our sides we had collards, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas a couple of pieces of cornbread and some banana pudding for dessert. Then, the first weird thing happened. As we took our seats, the waiter that helped us get seated, told us that they only had one fork and one knife. We assumed he meant he would go back to the kitchen (or the dishwasher, or wherever) and get us another set. Meanwhile, the food looked SO GOOD, we immediately began sharing the fork and taking turns. MAN! THIS FOOD WAS GREAT! After a couple of minutes, we noticed the second weird thing... we were the only two white folks in the entire, crowded restaurant. And there were LOTS OF PEOPLE. They also do a huge to go business, so, the buffet station stays pretty busy with people coming and going. But, during the entire time we were there, there was not a single non-black customer in the house, except us. Not an employee. Not a customer. Not even a to go customer, just passing through - NOBODY. After about 5 or 6 minutes of taking turns with the fork, we decided our server must've forgotten about us. So, my wife went and asked and was informed they still didn't have any forks. (No. We were not being singled out, as my wife heard them tell another customer the same thing.) My wife asked if they had some plastic utensils, used for to go orders. They were able to oblige. Back to the food... The fried chicken was as good as any I've ever had and much better than any I've had in recent memory. The vegetables were also seasoned and prepared as good as any I've ever had - in a restaurant OR at home. The cornbread didn't have real corn in it, (like I prefer) but it was still some KILLER CORNBREAD. And the nanner puddin' was off the charts. I REALLY WANT some more of that nanner puddin'!! The staff were friendly and helpful and I have no idea why we were the only white folks in attendance. Maybe it was just a weird coincidence. But, I'll tell you this. The nice people at this restaurant KNOW HOW TO COOK. And I highly recommend this restaurant to ANYBODY -- No matter what color you are! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and we look forward to dining there again, the next time we pass through Montgomery. Go here. You won't get a better country meal - anywhere. P.S. You might want to bring a fork.

This place feels like your traditional mom and pop restaurant where you can get a home cooked meal. When I got there, I was greeted by kind host who took me to my seat. There is plenty of seating to dine in as well as an area to wait with seating for carry out orders. The waitress was waiting on me was also very kind. My food came out quickly, and I also ordered carryout which also came out quickly. I ordered the catfish platter with a baked potato and macaroni and cheese. The fish was crispy and well seasoned. The macaroni and cheese was really good and the baked potato, was your standard baked potato. All of my food came out hot and fresh. The price point here is also something that you cannot beat. I also ordered a half-and-half to wash it all down. The next time I am in Marion, I will definitely be back to this restaurant to try some of their other offerings as well as their desserts.

Ordered ribs with corn on the cob and sweet potato fries. The only thing that wasn't refrigerator cold was the fries. The ribs and corn had warm spots but near the bone and cob were both cold, refrigerator cold. I don't send things back or complain as I believe food should come out right. The restaurant was not busy at all so maybe that had something to do with it? My friend riding with me had the same experience. Food may have been good had it been warm.

Some didn't know if it is pet friendly on the property of the Legacy Museum. One museum guy said the dog couldn't be on the terrace but okay in the grass by the curb. We sat down in the sun with our dog and tried to enjoy some southern comfort soul food. Then upon leaving an aggressive man from the museum told me I had to leave the property. I let him know that online it states "pet friendly". He was not very nice about even when I told him I was leaving. I guess he wanted to make a statement to the public. If this was driven by a prior history of dogs, I get it. BUT put up signs and even call it out why dogs are not welcome. I did what I could in advance to make sure I wasn't breaking rules and choosing a place to eat with my dog on family vacation traveling the South. I will not be back to Montgomery and now how a very negative view of this city. Unfortunately I was trying to teach my kids about social justice and our past history of racism and segregation. I feel it's reversed here.

You walk in to a cafeteria style line serving a variety of soul food options. On the Saturday that we went, they were serving items such as fried tilapia, baked chicken, fried chicken, stuff chicken, and pulled pork. Their sides were so flavorful - especially the black-eyed peas, green beans, and yams. The icing on the cake to our wonderful meal though was the blackberry and apple cobbler (so good we had to get a second to go). The meals were $15 each and the dessert was $3.50 - great value. These folks know what they're doing with their recipes and we're so glad we stopped.

It's kind of hard to tell what all the food options are, so I had to ask what some stuff was. I managed to get a meat and 2 instead of a meat and 5! There were quite a few veggie options that looked amazingly delicious! I do not recommend coming here hungry or hangry. Ok, sooo I love meat loaf so naturally that's what I got. I also got collards and cornbread dressing & yes they had cranberry sauce. Everything was good tasting. The meatloaf was a little sweet to my taste so I probably wouldn't order it again. The veggies were not over seasoned or overcooked. I will definitely comeback here bc there is still just so much I wanna try. The staff is nice and took care of the crowd. I even witnessed them give a person in need food, as they were about to dig in the restaurant's garbage can outside for scraps. Made me count my blessings.. all of them! There is street parking only. I didn't have any issues parking on a Sunday afternoon. The inside of this restaurant is not big but I was comfortable dining in.

Only about 3 people at a time can hold inside before it's starts getting crowded. It stay pretty busy. Options are 1 meat with two sides or 2 meats with three sides combination. A la cart is available as well. They have ice tea or lemonade drinks in a cup that they also serve you. Lemonade was good. There's a very small counter to pay after you order. Fry chicken is tasty with perfect crisp. Collard greens were seasoned well and perfect texture. Yams (my favorite) was perfect - flavorful, not too sweet and firm but not hard. Both of us thought the Black eyed peas looked really good but taste bland. I would have preferred it without the Okra. I didn't see that when I ordered. One in our group commented the meat loaf was good. The dressing was really good too - well seasoned and tasty. After paying there's a dining area for self seating. It serves the purpose to sit and eat but definitely could use sprucing up along with the restrooms. Please seriously consider! It would make the experience much more pleasant to enjoy their delicious food. I took off two stars for that reason and yes it's that unpleasant as the tables/chairs are also too clustered together. The chairs don't fit around the table properly. Overall good southern food at a reasonable price and recommended. Skip dining in if you don't have too. Just my two cents.

I can't tell you how many times people have recommended it for lunch, yet I never managed to stop in and experience it for myself until today. My work schedule and the Bag's hours always seemed to clash, and since it's a bit off the beaten path, it stayed in the "out of sight, out of mind" category. Now, as I'm approaching full retirement, I finally had the time to swing by and see what all the fuss was about. Upon arrival, the first sign you're in the right place is the parking lot. It's packed, about like a blue tick on a hound dog. Stepping inside, don't expect anything fancy. The interior is old school with faded paint and a no frills setup. Your food is served in Styrofoam containers with plastic utensils. But that's part of the charm. Who needs fine china when you're filling your gizzard with good soul food? The place was full and I managed to grab one of the last open tables under the roof. I then waited for the waitress who was running laps across the dining area, taking orders, refilling drinks, checking out customers, and handling everything in between. If you come anywhere near lunch hour, don't expect Jimmy John's Freaky Fast service. You're here to slow down and enjoy the experience. When I ordered, I went with a catfish fillet, turnip greens, field peas, fried green tomatoes, a side of cornbread, and tartar sauce for the fish. The fried green tomatoes did not make it out with the order, but the waitress was very apologetic and adjusted my bill to a meat and two instead of a meat and three, which I appreciated. Now to the important part, the food. The catfish was hot, crispy, and perfectly cooked, not greasy at all, just honest, well done Southern cooking. The turnip greens and field peas were flavorful and comforting, exactly what you hope for in a place like this. The tartar sauce had a slightly sweet twist that I was not expecting, different from the traditional version, but surprisingly excellent. I will need a few more visits before I can fully put that into words, but it worked. Overall, now I understand the buzz. The Brown Bag delivers exactly what it promises, simple, hearty, well prepared soul food served without pretense. I will definitely be back, and now that retirement is on the horizon, I have got all the time in the world to wait on a good meal, unlike you working folks still rushing through lunch.
