I found this winery when I was staying at Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. It is about a 20-minute drive from Jim Thorpe. If you're ever in the area I would definitely suggest going to this winery. It is located on top of a mountain and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. I came during the winter and it still looks stunning. I can only imagine how it would be in the summertime. I've been to Napa valley and I would say this rivals the beauty of some of the wineries in Napa. Save your flight money and just come to Pennsylvania to this winery. My wife and I had a tasting and some wines. I liked better than others but that's usually how it is at every winery. I really enjoyed two out of the five wines that I tasted so I bought a bottle of the wine that I loved and I ordered a glass of the wine that I liked. The woman who poured my wine was very knowledgeable and seemed to be really into the wine. She also mentioned that she was a cousin to the owner so it really gave me family vibes in this establishment. They also had a separate cheese company putting together cheese plates. So we definitely ordered that as well. This winery has a couple of goods for sale, potatoes, t-shirts, and tchotchkes. I definitely bought a bag of potatoes that is grown on the farm and they were delicious. Inside the winery there was a very cool vibe with a lot of people having tastings. Everybody was in good spirits. Did I mention that the views are spectacular while you're drinking. We couldn't drink outside because it was so cold but I would definitely love to come during the nicer months weather wise. I have zero complaints with this winery and I cannot wait to come back. read more

I posted a video of Galen Glen on Instagram and my friends thought we were in Napa! I have to say, it sure felt that way! Karen was delightful and helped us out and educated us about all of the available wines at Galen Glen. It seems like this amazing vineyard is already very popular as many of the products were out of stock. Good for them as they are running an incredible business. Funny story as we started out the weekend having dinner in Harrisburg at Millworks. If you haven't been to Millworks, that's worth the trip and we need to go back to check out all the art and artists that are there. While dining at the Millworks, which is farm to table, I had a really nice glass of rose. I looked up where the vineyard was and right then and there thought, we have to go here! And that is how we found Galen Glen, through Millworks in Harrisburg! So we did our tasting with Karen and wound up buying a case with a variety of different wines. Some rose, bubbly rose, and a few of the other whites. My husband made a comment that we lived nearly everything we tried, which is so rare ! There were also some great snacks to purchase such as homemade jams-- loved the peach rose, and there was amazing sharp cheddar local cheese + crackers. Or we saw others brought their own food. There are picnic tables and other indoor areas to enjoy the wine + views for days. Tina helped us with the case selection and now we are a member of the "Case Club," for next time we visit. And you know we will be back. I mean, look at these photos. You travel all the way up to the top of the overlook and get this incredible view. Came here with a partner here for an anniversary trip activity. We called before and luckily they had made some COVID precautions with outdoor seating and social distancing. We arrived and the place was cute! But it wasn't until we got to the seating, we saw the amazing winery views. Followed up by the wine flights, cheese and crackers, and the amazing chocolates, we had an amazing time! The food was so good, and wines paired great! I've been to Galen Glen quite a few times as it has become my absolute favorite winery. Their wine selection is great, reds, whites, blush, dry, sweet and everything in between. Talking about another winery close by who uses grapes from Washington while negatively putting the winery down. Visiting Jim Thorpe for the weekend we organized our own winery trail. Galen Glen was by far the favorite winery in the area. Easy private parking, with breathtaking scenic views, the winery has a main tasting area with an outdoor attached sun room. The tasting is 5$ for 5 wines, my husband and I split a flight (the pours were enough for both of us). They offer a good mix of dry white, dry red, and sweet wines. The 5$ tasting fee goes towards your wine purchase. The staff was wonderfully pleasant, providing in-depth wine knowledge-including soil breakdowns. The dry whites were delicious, specifically the Gewürztraminer. The dry reds were light and could use time to mature. We really wanted to open a bottle and hang around, but there is a no open bottle policy, and it was more efficient to take it to go than buy a bunch of glasses, so we carried on. This very modern, environmentally-conscious, and high quality winery is one of the best in PA. Up on a hilltop (once a locals' lookout), surrounded by sloping vineyards and a breath-taking view, you could swear you were in Southern CA and not Schuylkill County. You will NOT be disappointed in the wines either -- which can happen at PA wineries (but it is still good that you patronize them to encourage growth and to support local ag). GG specializes in European/German-style whites, both sweet and dry, and the (dry) Gruner Veltliner which I have had in restaurants (on draft!) is superb. Think of a bright slightly-minerally Sauvignon Blanc. The wine list covers both sides of a page, and the $5 tasting fee goes toward your wine purchase. Wonderful friendly staff all-around. I also liked their dry rose and dry red blend with Chambourcin. I can't wait to get back and taste more. There is an indoor pavilion next to the tasting room where you can take a carafe ($10 for 1/2) and some snacks available on site, to relax on picnic tables with windows all around. Outdoor seating is available too. One amazing thing I have not seen on the East Coast is the high quality of tasting glasses. They are Tritan (Schott-Zweisel) crystal, whoa nice! We could not get away without buying food, wine, a carafe to drink, and glassware (the Tritan is not for sale that I know of; the GG logo glasses were still pretty cool). This winery has been going since 1995 and is continually innovating and upgrading. In keeping with sustainability, they use NO animal finings (usually fish bladders) or products in any of their wines. (*Did you know that some wineries add casein, which is milk protein?) On the bright side this is probably the most beautiful winery I have ever visited. Sitting atop a mountain, a seat on their patio offers the sight of miles and miles of farms and homesteads across the neighboring hills. The views took my breath away. For that alone I would return. Their wines run decent, with some hits and some misses. As with most Pennsylvania wineries their whites are typically better due to the climate, and most of the whites here are quite enjoyable. For instance, their Rieslings run drier but are still a pleasant experience with very fruity notes. Other honorable mentions go to their Holiday Spice Red, which is one of the better versions I've had, and their Galah Blush, which is semi-sweet but very juicy on the palate. My biggest issue though is that many of their wines smell skunky. I'm not sure if this is something that occurs in their production, or something about being exposed to too much light somewhere along the line, but it is very off putting. Winter Mountain White and their port are the worst offenders, of which I could barely choke down after smelling them. I ended up buying a bottle of Winter Mountain Red (a sweet Concord), and when I opened it at home I got that same skunky smell! What in the world? The wine still tastes good, but it really bothers me that the smell comes out of nowhere. Anyway, with a beautiful vineyard and some decent wines I will definitely make my way back out again, however, I'm still wary of certain wines. Hopefully this issue will be resolved. read more

I went to the winery with a few friends. Asked to do a tasting. My husband kept getting served with his wines and I was completely ignored. When my husband was finished, he and my other friends were all served wine and beer and I was still waiting for my tasting to be gone so we could all sit down. It was so obvious that I was being completely ignored. All my friends were trying to get her attention. She finally walked over, poured two drops into my glass and said real loud, "This should shut you up for a while ". I wasn't even talking, nor was I rude or loud. I was so humiliated in front of my friends and all the people standing there that I cried. I was so upset and dumbfounded that I literally froze. I tried to file a grievance with the Better Business Bureau but they declined me because I don't want anything from you. But I'm telling everyone I know what happened and not to visit your establishment! I just want Leslie fired and want you to know how she is representing your company. I've never ever been treated that way by anybody. All we wanted to do was catch up with friends and enjoy the day. Very very disappointed, we had no choice but to leave. Actually we all want our money back but it's just not worth it nor enough to pay me back for the humiliation!!!! I don't want to leave one star but I have to too complete this post!! read more

I loved this winery so much that I created a Yelp account just to leave 5 stars. My boyfriend and I came to this area to escape Philly for the weekend and we discovered this gem per the recommendation of our Air BnB hosts. The views are absolutely stunning. The tasting area is lovely, clean, and staffed with incredibly friendly people. We also took the tour, which cost $5 (and came with a glass of wine for the walk!). The tour was informative and gave us the chance to see this beautiful winery up close. A bonus is the handsomest boy Russell, a dog you might encounter on the tour. He appreciates a nice ear scratching. We ended up buying half a case of reds, and we've got plans for each bottle already! If you're in the area, don't miss this family-owned gem. read more

They should get glasses with their name on it instead of fancy crystal. They also had cheese fondue that you could get with a decent glass of wine for 5 dollars. Number 1 With two good close friends as party of three for the Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania wine tour, Galen Glen was our first vineyard to visit. Six tastings for $5.00 was so worth the experience. Their glasses are generously large specifically made by a German glass maker, unlike the standard wine glasses, purposely to enhance the wine taste and intake pleasure. I like the wine goblet so much for the large size that I purchase it for $5.00. The $5.00 wine tasting fee applies towards the purchase of any bottle. Staff is attentive to our questions and selections for the six tastings. Ice wine is available for tastings at $2.00 each. Their staff mention how Galen Glen is known for their German and Austrian white wines and they surely live up to this claim. We were blown away with their quality white wines!! My personal favorite whites were: Grüner Veltliner 2013 dry white and Stone Cellar Gewürztraminer 2012 dry white which were by far superior in quality, grapes and light on the palate. I sorrowfully regret for not purchasing a bottle, but their website enables purchasing to the public. Their reds were also good as the Cellar Red 2013 which was subtle, semi-dry with the flair of Chambourcin. Galen Glen does not offer food despite having chairs and tables outdoor that faces the beautiful scenic valley of Andreas, Pennsylvania. The acres of land is large and sits on a steep valley. They offer complimentary crackers only to clean the palate in between tastings, but no substantial food. Facilities are clean. The atmosphere of the tasting room is very modern, simple and clean. One resident cat exist but it does not bother patrons. A private parking lot is available. There are no wine tours offered of their vineyard, cellar, nor explanation of what type of barrels are used aging and what type of barrels used for fermentation. The tranquil valley landscape is a must-see and must-be photographed as it was a good escape from a urban setting and the stress of any large densely populated city life. Just beautiful! Overlooking the countryside, this winery has all that a wine-o needs for a good time. We did the tour, and you get to ride on the back of a wagon that's pulled by a tractor. It leads you down to where the family wine is made. The service we had here was not the best. I came with a big group of girls, and we were totally ignored on the wine tour. The tour guide talked with his back to us the whole time. He made no effort to make eye contact with any of us at any time. Attempting to ask questions didn't help. He answered the question to the rest of the group, and we weren't even able to hear the answers. Bummer, because we were actually interested in what we had to say. A bunch of us bought the wine slushi mix which was delicious! The cheeses and wines were also fabulous. The Gala wine was my favorite! I would go back but skip the tour. read more

Went there for the first time on Mother's Day. We took a picnic lunch, and sat at the outside terrace. It has a beautiful view, and the staff was freindly and informative. There have some great white wines, and most seem to have a Germanic heritage as their Reisling is quite good. I'm mostly a red fan, and I prefer dry reds. I tried a nice drinkable table red, but I believe their whites are their strength. It's a fun drive there, and for a Pennsylvania Winery, I think they are better then many others I've visited. I just turned 21 so my husband decided to take me out for my first wine tasting. We have had many people suggest Galen Glen to us so we decided to try it out. We were immediately greeted by both Kendra and Kathy when we walked in. The tasting was 5 wines for $5, very reasonable. Each wine we tried was amazing and the service was just as great. Both women gave us thorough information about each wine we tried. We left with 3 bottles and enjoyed wine slushies on the patio, which has a beautiful view of the vineyards. Went there for a wine tasting on Saturday. I was surprised by how many people were there out in the middle of nowhere (three miles past the first sign you see for the winery). Came away with three bottles of wine: Galah, Barrel Twenty-Nine, and Vidal Blanc Ice Wine. Also bought two kinds of Amish cheese. I'd definitely go back! Discovered that the Barrel Twenty-Nine goes great with ginger ale! Tips: Buy a case of wine (on one credit card) to save 10%. I am partial to their whites I will admit, and they never ever disappoint. I am crediting Galen Glen as the first winery to introduce the world to wine slushees. I daresay, among all of the wineries and vineyards in the up-and-coming Lehigh Valley AVA, Galen Glen stands tallest both for the integrity of their wines and the stunning vistas afforded by visiting the winery, which has the most striking location in all of the AVA. It's a little bit of a schlep to get there from the ABE area, but it's a pleasant drive through much bucolic farmland and dramatic mountain passes (of the Northeastern PA variety). The tasting room is beautifully outfitted and an attached enclosed picnic area is excellent should you (wisely) choose to bring some of your own nibbles to enjoy with their wine by the glass. Tastings cost $5, and allow you six small pours. The only disappointment on our recent visit was that their flagship Grüner Veltliner was neither available to taste, nor offered by the glass. The tasting fee is then applied to any purchases by the bottle you might make (and you will make some). This is one of the few wineries in the AVA who have wisely planted mostly Germanic varietals, as opposed to some of the more usual suspects. They have plenty of crowd pleasers which will appeal to the extremely casual drinker (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that), and a few that will definitely appeal to connoisseurs (Robert Parker raves about their Grüner, as will I, in a moment). Years ago, I tried some of the late harvest offerings and was very impressed. I think the gewürtztraminer is well on its way to competing with offerings from some of the more mature vineyards in, say, the Finger Lakes, with a beautifully aromatic nose that promises a little more than is delivered on the palate. Still, an excellent sipper. I wished I had tried the semi-dry riesling - I liked the dry versions but wanted for a little sweetness (user error, alas). The cabernet franc has a nice, berry-based nose, medium body, and shows evidence of minimal futzing from the winemakers, a welcome relief among producers in the area, who often make lavish visits to oakchipville. The real whizbang offering, though, is the Grüner. There's tons of Viennese savoir-faire with a signature grassy, slightly grapefruity opening that seems to promise Marlborough sauvignon blanc, until it zags back to Grinzig, in the hills above Vienna, with a flinty minerality and a zesty splash of white peach. This wine is extremely food friendly, neither overpowering delicate dishes nor yielding to fuller-flavored fare. There are a few microclimates on the GG property, including a steeply-raked north-facing hillside, vines planted on an intermediary west-facing gentle slope, and also younger vines on another gentle slope, facing south. This variation accounts for the subtle differences between wines made from the same grapes and is an overriding factor for some of the most terroir-evident wines produced around here. The folks at the winery are very hospitable, kind, and love to share their knowledge with visitors. Galen Glen offers Food Truck Friday on the last Friday of the summer months, and a glass of grüner with something tasty from a fine truck, taking in the magnificent scenery and a summer sunset is particularly transporting. read more

My wife, friend and I did a wine tour of Lehigh Valley wineries and this one was the best! I knew this place was special when we walked up to bar for a tasting and I saw the big, meaty wine glasses. I was impressed by their size and the bartender told me they were made by a German glass maker to compliment their German and Austrian wines. No small wine goblets, like you'd find at other wine tastings, here! She told us they were known for their dry whites and boy, were they off the charts!!! By far, the BEST whites I've ever had at a winery and hey, their reds aren't bad either. This place doesn't have any food except for crackers and jam but I can't knock them for it since their wines were so sensational! The views are great and you get $5 off a bottle of wine for each tasting you pay for (also $5). What a great thing to offer! It's pretty much a free wine tasting and I had to buy a few bottles so I got a few bucks off there. Great experience and great wines!!! Winner! read more

Not a great price but if you buy a bottle per person they apply the $5 towards your purchase. Wines are OK, not great. The raspberry dessert wine was excellent. Had a disappointing visit to the winery. The wine was delicious and we had a few glasses on the patio. A server came out at about 4:30 to remind us that UBER usually takes about half an hour to arrive so we should make arrangements for our trip home since the winery was closing at 5. At about 4:45, we decided to get a last glass of wine before heading home. The staff told us that last call was 4:30. No one made an announcement and the staff was eager to get us off the property. Never encountered such rude service. The staff told me they didn't care much about negative reviews, and I was free to write one if I wanted to. What a change in attitude from a few years ago when the staff was so accommodating and made me and my girlfriends feel welcomed. Surprisingly good dry wines, with a few sweet here and there, along with a gorgeous view makes Galen Glen Vineyard and Winery worth a visit. Let's start with that view - I didn't think I'd get views like that after moving away from the mountains of central Virginia, but Galen Glen is worth the visit just to take a picture. Nestled in between farm fields and mountains, Galen Glen offers better whites by far than its reds, with a focus on Central Europe varietals Reislings, Grüner Veltliner, and Gewürztraminer. Considering the climate of east central PA this makes a lot of sense, and the resulting wine is pretty good. For a very small tasting fee you can try anywhere from 6-8 of the wines from the long list (you can pick your own wine adventure here, and have flexibility in the amount of tastings). The variety here is a selling point, as fans of dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines will have plenty to choose from. I prefer dry, so I started with the dry whites, and as mentioned above this is where Galen Glen excels with three Reislings, three Grüner Veltliners, and a lone Gewürztraminer. This allows you to taste the same grapes from different years made different ways. I liked the 2015 Riesling Fossil Vineyard, with earthy stone fruits and a crisp finish, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Dry White, floral with grapefruit, and my favorite that lone Gewürztraminer, with a slight honeydew sweetness. Many of the whites do have a strong earthy smell, but don't let that deter you. The reds here are only average, with a shout out to the 2014 Chambourcin, with blackberry/raspberry and a texture approaching smooth but not quite there yet. I was pleasantly surprised by Galen Glen. You can definitely feel the passion in these wines, and there's a lot to like here. The whites are the star, especially the dry ones, so white drinkers rejoice. read more
