This wasn't some gem I stumbled upon. Nope. I was passing by, saw this spot, and decided to grab lunch. The place looks like it could use some updates. Moving right along, I love a good hot dog from time to time. I just knew this hot dog was going to be on point. Wrong. The dog was completely lost in the sub roll. The fries? Nothing to review. Let's just say I didn't enjoy my lunch on this day.

For 35+ years, I've found Galloping Hill to be a reliable place for all styles of Texas Weiner-style griddle dogs, fries, and the usual burgers and so forth. It's not a fancy place or some trendy place, just a somewhat quaint 60s/70s style place to get a reliable/average dog/burger/fries and a drink with the usual fixings. It compares favorably with some of the more celebrated doggie "breatherin" such as Rutts Hut or Jimmy Buffs, which is just down the street. It is an easy diversion (both north and south) off the GSP with plenty of parking, but since it's marooned on an awkward corner, the traffic pattern can be challenging. This is a great place and is family-friendly any time of the year.

I've been to this place many times over the years. Deceptively large venue with outdoor eating area, small luncheon style interior area, & a door with leads to a larger dining area. Known for their Hot Dogs, which don't disappoint. A local staple of the area worth a stop.

not a fancy place. hits the spot for hot dogs, birch beer and if your fancy a Coors light with your hot dog. been around for many many years. not as famous as hirims or rutts hot but still good. there's a inside spot with wait service I usually order at the counter and eat outside.

I ordered a teriyaki chicken sandwich with fries to go and Galloping Hill met my expectations! The order was ready in under five minutes, which had me wondering if it was even cooked! It was and the fries were good and crispy. The sandwich had just the right amount of teriyaki sauce. I paid $13 which was about what I thought I'd pay.

Brought my Dad to GHI for lunch last week. He's been going here since the 1960s but moved from the area in 1985. A trip back to Union County isn't complete without a trip to "Five Points". Our server was lovely & quick! We ordered hot dogs, fries & onion rings (which I know has been his order for decades). The snap on these dogs is second to none, and not just the 1st bite. The chili they use for chili dogs is more like a sauce but it's delicious. The buns have always been top quality. The footprint & vibe hasn't changed since they opened but that's part of the charm. Thank you GHI for keeping things old school & making a classic dude very happy.

Horrible first time experience. Had a craving for hot dogs on my way home from work. I've heard good things about Galloping Hill so I decided to get off the GSP and give it a try. I walk up to order takeout.....I say "two hot dogs, one with sauerkraut and mustard, the second with onions". The woman looks at me puzzled and says "onions? You want BBQ"?. I'm like, huh? No, hot dog onions. You know hot onions. Isn't it understood that when you order a hot dog with onions it's the "hot dog style" onions? If you want raw or otherwise then you specify that. I get home and the second dog, the first with kraut and mustard was correct, has sauerkraut and FRIED onions on it. Like you would put on a hamburger. WTF? First of all I never said sauerkraut and not sure where she got fried onions from. And on top of it all the hot dogs themselves were not that good. Not sure what they use, but definitely not Sabrett, Nathan's, Best's or Hebrew National for sure. Won't be back again for sure!!

Seemed like frozen fast food onion rings. Not good.

This is such a painful review to write. The Galloping Hill Inn is a beloved part of my childhood. Every weekend my father would take me here and we'd always order the same thing; two hot dogs with brown mustard, sauerkraut, sweet and hot relish, along with an order of onion rings to share, and two birch beers. I'm older now and haven't been to the Galloping Hill Inn in years, but recently, my father, who is now in his 80's, expressed a desire to return. Sadly, it seems when Thomas Wolfe wrote "You Can't Go Home Again" he must have been referring to this place. With the exception of the service, which was friendly and polite, everything about our recent visit was disappointing. At first glance the restaurant appears to remain virtually unchanged since my childhood, although there is now an outdoor pavilion with tables, which must be nice in the summer but was empty on the cold winter day we were there. Both the walk-up counter and the sit-down restaurant look the same. We sat down inside, but immediately got a strange vibe. Like the restaurant had lost its soul but was still trying to stay alive. There was no bustle of activity, or large trays of steaming hot dogs being served to hungry workers on their lunch break. It seemed like we'd stepped into the dining room at a retirement home. There weren't many customers, but almost without exception the ones who were there all seemed to be in their 70's, and in no rush to leave despite having finished eating. It just wasn't the fun "hot dog stand" feeling I remembered. All of this could be forgiven if the food was great (or even good), but it wasn't. The hot dogs, which used to be served almost immediately (because they made so many) took a good ten minutes to come out. What we got not only looked unappealing, but were nothing like excellent hot dogs I remembered. That hot dogs were cold and seemed undercooked. The sauerkraut was also cold. The hot dog rolls which used to be one of the things that made a Galloping Hill Inn hot dog special, and where made by a local bakery (supposedly exclusively for the Galloping Hill Inn) were stale, hard and crumbly. Adding insult to injury, the relish was bizarrely served on the hot dog side by side lengthwise, as if they thought we wanted to eat half of the hot dog with sweet relish and half of the hot dog with hot relish. Also, there was so little of it. You'd think there was some national relish shortage. The onion rings, which we used to love, now seem to be the frozen commercial variety you might find at a mediocre diner or fast-food restaurant. Even the birch beer was flat. We complained to the waitress, who we got the feeling had been working there in better days. She acknowledged apologetically that the food wasn't the same and offered to replace it with a fresh order, but we declined and left. In retrospect, maybe it was a mistake to hope the Galloping Hill Inn would be as good as I remembered it to be. Nothing ever is.

    Pork Roll and Swiss Burger

Had this place recommended to us by a lot of people on the internet after they saw our videos on Hirams, Rutts Hutt, Hot Grill, etc. so we decided to swing by after dropping a friend at the Newark Airport. I will say that the prices very solid and the staff was very friendly. The food however unfortunately was just very alright. The dogs were...different. Not sure how else to say it. They had a nice snap to them but the casing seemed not like many i've had before. The flavor was not really the same either. Not bad per se, just different. The chili was good and the onions had the right flavor. Just a little surprised by the dog. The burgers were small (what seemed to be) frozen patties. They were cooked a little hard also, a little bit of a heavy crust on them, I don't love that. The pork roll and swiss combo was tasty. I didn't photo the fries but they were just typical crinkle cuts, tasted unsalted. Don't want to tear the place down, but it wasn't in the same league as the others in Northern Jersey i've tried.

I hear this is a New Jersey landmark. It is located on what the people who know Union call "Five Points". This inn was formally called Petersens back in the day. I heard this is one of the better hot dog venues in the state. They certainly have diversity in their menu, Salads, subs, pizza, wraps, sandwiches, gyros, and a small selection of dinners. Their prices are very reasonable. Nothing on the menu is over $11. Samantha was a very capable server. I ordered a dog w/fried onions and fries. You must try their Birch Beer. The place is quite spotless. Mind you, if you're looking for gourmet, this be not the place. With their pricing, portions are on the small side, except the dogs. They also do catering. Ample parking.

Atmosphere: 4 There's a small diner charm when you walk in. No line at around 5:00 so we were able to place our order quick. Since we came during the pandemic, we did not dine in but got it as take out instead. The food came quick. Portion: 5 Tons of food! I got an Italian hot dog and it was much more than I expected! The shoe string fries were plenty to share with my husband. I also got a bowl of homemade soup. Flavors: 3 I was really excited to have the food when we got home. It smelled so good during the drive home. I think the ingredients would combine nicely so I was surprised when I felt like the meal was just ok. The minestrone was ok as well. Overall, I thought the meal was just ok. Maybe it would have been different if I could have eaten it right away and eaten it at the restaurant. There's plenty to try on their menu too!

A man in a Mets hat asks us to place our order. My friends and I ordered at the counter and waited in a quick moving line of people who looked excited to be there. I ordered a burger, fries, the guy encouraged me to get the waffle fries. The guy behind the counter was all about encouraging you to make the best order choices. I later ordered a shake, and the man yelled "vanilla or chocolate?" in his wonderfully stern New Jersey accent. I went with chocolate, greatest decision. Initial Reactions & Ratings: Bacon Burger: "Incredible" Rating: MM Chocolate Shake: "mmmmm" Rating: MMMMM Waffle Fries: "WOW perfect" Rating: MM Customer Service: Absolutely perfect. Felt like home. Atmosphere: The perfect Jersey grit. Photography worthy. Aesthetic and colors brought me joy. Old time Americana. ---------------------------------------- My Initial Reaction Rating Scale M: (strong love reaction) MM: (It's good, but It's not forcing me to verbally react to it) MMM: (Dancing and nodding my head in agreement to how great this food is) MMMM: ("mmmmmm" undeniably unbelievable and sensationally hitting all the spots) MMMMM: (I'm so emotionally attached to this meal, I will think about it forever and I may shed tears while I eat it.)

TOP TIP: Street parking in this part of town is a hassle and the local cops keep a sharp eye for illegally parked cars and inebriated drivers. So park further away from the center of town where you are more likely to snag a legal spot on a busy night.
