5/5 Stars - 10/10 Experience I want to take a moment to recognize someone who truly represents what brick-and-mortar retail is supposed to be about. Back in January 2026, I walked into the GameStop in Escondido with a broken Xbox One. I had already visited local repair shops and was quoted a few hundred dollars to fix it. At that point, I started thinking it might make more sense to explore refurbished options instead of sinking that kind of money into an older console. That's when I met Jeff. From the moment I walked in, Jeff was professional, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable. I had been out of the gaming world for about six years, so I wasn't even sure what questions I should be asking. Jeff walked me through everything. He explained the differences between my standard Xbox One and the Xbox One X Scorpio Edition in a way that was clear, detailed, and easy to understand. Because of his guidance, I confidently chose the Scorpio Edition--and after playing it, the performance difference was night and day. Right before we finalized the purchase, I asked him one more question: "Will Grand Theft Auto 6 work on this system?" He was honest. He said no--and explained I would need the newer Xbox Series X for that level of compatibility. He checked inventory and told me he had two in stock, including one brand new unit. For about $100 more, I could experience opening a brand-new, top-tier console. We completed the transaction, and we actually opened the sealed Xbox Series X together. That moment meant more than I expected. It was a genuine, memorable retail experience. Jeff didn't just sell me a product--he made the experience special. We talked gaming, technology, and the direction of the industry. I walked out sharper and more informed than when I walked in. Shortly after, I learned the Escondido location was closing. I assumed I'd never see Jeff again. Fast forward one month--I walked into the Carmel Mountain GameStop to pick up some Nintendo Switch games and a classic Atari 300-game console. And there he was. Jeff. My face lit up immediately. Knowing that someone with that level of expertise and integrity was there made me feel confident about every purchase I was making. I've owned multiple businesses myself, and I can confidently say Jeff is the exact type of employee every company should fight to keep. He goes above and beyond. He's bright, honest, passionate, and truly cares about helping customers make the right decisions--not just making a sale. Yes, technically you can research gaming information online. But Jeff saved me hours of digging through forums and conflicting opinions. More importantly, he helped me ask the right questions--something you can't always get from Google. Over the last couple of months, I've spent a few thousand dollars in GameStop stores. The reason I continue to walk into physical locations instead of buying online is because of employees like Jeff. GameStop corporate leadership--if you're reading this--you have something rare here. In a world that's going increasingly digital, people like Jeff are what make physical stores valuable. Protect and retain talent like this. Jeff, thank you for the time, the knowledge, and the experience. Customer service nightmare. Went to stand in line for a Switch II (graduation gift for my son) after calling to verify that they'd give out numbers for extra (non-preordered units). Got a number, was told confidently that I could cone back later to pay. After 3 trips there, standing in line, despite being told that there would be no problem, when I finally went to pay, I was told there were no more units. No apology for my wasted time (about 2 hrs in total, not including gas for 2 extra trips there). Do not give these indifferent clowns your business. read more

I have had very good success at this location. They are very helpful. I have not had the same luck at the Mira Mesa store, They don't wanna help me ever out, but Carmel Mountain does. They go above and beyond to help me out, which is very appreciated. I'm a happy customer there. Whenever I need to go buy video games I go to the Carmel Mountain store. Go check it out. In particular, Juan was amazing today. He will take good care of you. I wish the Mira Mesa manager would take a look at this comment because they never do anything to go out of their way to help me out. Very frustrated with that location. read more

Poor customer service. New tcg came into the store and was in inventory. But clerk said that they hold back inventory for employees only.

BEWARE!!! DO NOT RECOMMEND !!! GameStop is trying to get into grading cards and this location is not helping. I turned 5 cards in to be graded DECEMBER 2nd and still haven't received them back. I turned in 8 cards through another service on December 8th and got them back within 4 weeks! How is that possible ? Now the manager Juan has no answers , he give me the GameStop customer care line , which I called a week ago and still haven't gotten a call back. Juan says he's not responsible since he's just a middle man for sending and receiving and that I need to get in contact with their customer care line that doesn't return calls.. is this how game stop is doing card grading ???!?!? Horrible.. Meanwhile one of Juan's employees took the time to email their district manager with my issue and others she said with the same issue. Still no response. Kudos to that employee. Shout out MARKET 2 MINT for your grading expertise, ease of your tracking system and you actually return cards to the customer. read more

Horrible customer service is the reason Gamestop is failing. I've had issues with GS's "new game" definition previously (an opened but unplayed cartridge or disc is NOT NEW so don't try to sell it to anyone at full price!). Now, I have to get hassled with a legitimate return (a new, unopened switch game with receipt within 30 days) where the guy tried to tell me I might not be able to return this still-sealed new game because "well I think the return policy may have changed" and then proceeded to look for this so-called "new" store policy for several minutes. ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Even the manager was there beside him and she didn't even correct him or inform him (yes that short blonde with glasses girl who had a bad review here in Yelp). Hassle-free returns are NON-EXISTENT here, as are brains and courtesy. This store in particular has been the worst offender of all the Gamestops in town and I will absolutely not be shopping at this or any GameStop from now on. read more

Lack of customer service. Someone waiting at the register while the two employees carry on a conversation about their hours and things they need to do in the store. Improve customer service was not mentioned but should be their top priority. When we asked about a product we just received a finger point in the general direction no offer to help with any questions or anything more. During these pandemic times I greatly value retailers who provide me options when it comes to ordering and receiving merchandise. Most of the time I will opt for home delivery, but I will pickup in store to avoid delivery fees. During the Thanksgiving weekend, I placed an order for a video game and opted to pick it up at my local GameStop. A few days later I received an email letting me know it was ready for pickup. I checked the store hours off Yelp and visited the store about 30mins after it opened on a Sunday. I walked up to the plexiglass-shielded counter and gave my name for pickup. I also quickly flashed my drivers' license for identity verification and received my order within about 2mins. So I got a good deal on a video game gift and managed to have minimal contact in the process. Very convenient. Zero complaints! read more

After selling back an old Xbox to GameStop I decided to become a Pro member here because of the signup bonus and monthly $5 off gift certificate that basically pays for the membership within a few months. Since doing so, I have been coming to GameStop about once a month to make use of it or just pickup a $5 item for free! The employees here are always friendly and help you find what you need. I've been to other GameStop stores in the area and some of the people working there are not as interested in helping you out. These guys are nice and helpful. It's easy to use your membership and preorder items. The prices are competitive and preowned game selection is fair. ----TL;DR---- Pros: friendly service, reasonable prices, buyback of old consoles, good hours Cons: limited selection of preowned games but this varies by location Bottom line: come here for any video game needs, they will help you out read more

just bought a t-150 ps4 racing sim teering wheel, box looked open but had a sticker on it that said it was "brand new" and never opened before, and i questioned the worker multiple times and he re assured me that it was new, when i opened the box and the wrapper i saw i was given a cracked and broken sim wheel that i just spent almost $200 on that i had saved up my money for but its broken. and i know its not connection issues because the buttons work and the pedals work but the steering does not. The gear for the steering wheel must be broken from being used and dropped. And a lot of the body looks warped like it's coming apart from not being able to sit together correctly.they better give me my money back. This deserves no stars. read more

An employee on 03/19/22 was very passive aggressive and even attempted to gaslight me. I called on the phone and asked if a black ps4 controller was in stock. He said no only red, blue, and purple. I tell him I will come in and we hang up. I come in and say hey I am the one who called and he said okay then came back with a blue controller. I asked if I could get the red. Here's the gaslight, he said I asked for a blue one on the phone and I see a purple one in his hand. I was considering getting the purple then he tries to make me look like an idiot and said first you said blue (I did not), then red, then purple, which one is it?? all the sudden he looks at the controllers and says there's actually a black on preowned and a red preowned. I tell him I want the black preowned. So he gets the controller. I get to the counter and he tries to get me a powerup membership I say no midspeech, which I realize was a little harsh and I feel bad, but I already knew what he was going to say and I knew I didn't want the membership. He says that I could have saved 15% if I hadn't interrupted him, which was very passive aggressive. read more

My buddy and I went in, a worker said my buddy needs a mask so my friend is not confrontational so he asked, "Hey, do you have a mask?" And we both could sense he didn't want to give my friend a mask, even though we both are vaccinated. I asked a simple question, and the worker said, "I don't have time to answer but it is a good game..." we were the ONLY two in the store and the worker was on his phone so do your job! I had some issues with my Switch right before a 3 week long trip to Europe and I came in like 2 days before we were leaving. I could not for the life of me figure out what was wrong with my Switch, but Mark C came in so clutch for me. He was absolutely amazing and made it so easy for me to pick up a new Switch and some games before my trip so that I wasn't bored out of my mind on the 10+ hour flight. Thank you so much Mark you were absolutely amazing. Whoever is the head manager at the Carmel Mountain location, please give him a raise or some sort of bonus. I've been going to this GameStop for awhile, and I've never had any issues. They recently remodeled the inside of their store, and it looks a lot nicer and feels less congested. A few days ago I pre-ordered Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the Switch and went in last night to pick it up. They had one employee on the clock taking care of two decently sized lines--one for Fire Emblem and the other for everything else. Noah did a great job handling both lines, staying courteous, and keeping a smile on his face. All the other employees I've interacted with at this store have been awesome. read more

Great selection of games, but one of the worst Gamestop stores I have ever been to. Customer service is a foreign concept. While waiting in line, the clerk spent close to 20 minutes discussing a new game coming out, but was not helpful when I asked questions about games for younger girls. I get the impression they aren't fond of female gamers either. I no longer go here, I drive to the Gamestop at the mall. The knowledgeable staff makes up for the smaller selection of games. Probably the only decent thing here is their used games and clearance items. Lady behind the counter was rude and really not paying attention. Just spouts off some speech about joining a club and no refunds. Then at the last second says oops this is our last game but it was never touched or played even though it didn't come in original box. I never do bad reviews, cause let's face it the worlds already filled with enough negativity. But this particular GameStop is always Ill prepared at a new games launch. Example horizon one of the biggest releases of the year and you sell out first day? Seriously? That's fine I'll just go to Best Buy up the street but jeeese. Always pushing pre orders and warranty's. The only amazing thing about this place is how it makes being a customer a totally abysmal experience. The average retail customer experience goes like this: 1. Enter store 2. Find desired product 3. Take product register 4. Wait for an open register 5. Pay for product 6. Leave. There. Done. If that is all, then the experience has been a success. So how come this place is incapable of making even one shopping trip just be totally normal? I have had employees argue with me over buying something new instead of used. When I need any games or accessories I go to this store and buy. I usually run into Don and he's always full of energy and knowledge. I have never experienced any problems with Don and have been very satisfied with the service. However, the reason why I ranked this store a 1 star has more to do with two employees that didn't just drop the ball from a customer service perspective they also lied when they could have just admitted that they don't know how to help and to come back next day and speak to Don. - On 08/21/15, I drove about 25 minutes from where I live to get to this store. As you can tell, this is my favorite store and I purchase here. A few months back I pre ordered Black Ops III and overtime I lost the receipt. I didn't get a chance to submit the beta. So I stop by the store to speak to one of the employees regarding the situation. 1st employee that I ran into told me that when you lose your beta game stop cannot help. She stated that I have to call activision to get a new beta code. I almost believed her until I asked her how long have you been working here and she mentioned that she's been working at the store on and off. So I decided to google some stuff and found out that activision said we need to go back to the retailer from where we purchased. I showed the employee the facts and she responded with that's weird I wouldn't know how to do it. She indicated there is another employee that's in the back but didn't bother to ask. She stood there staring at me saying I don't know how to help you. And that she doesn't know if she is allowed to do anything to give me beta. I told her maybe you should cancel my order and reorder it so that I could get the beta code. She said she's not sure if she can do that. The phone rang and a customer asked her a question to which she said let me check. She put the phone on hold and walked to the back of the store and entered the room... And pulled out another girl that works there named Chelsea. I was appalled at the fact that she couldn't even answer my question and did not even think once to ask this other employee for help and yet a phone call convinced her that since she doesn't know the answer she should get help from Chelsea. Anyways, I told Chelsea my issue and how GameStop should be able to help. Chelsea said "oh the beta is no longer any good for Xbox 1 because activision stated that they will not issue any beta for xbox1". I asked her are you sure about that? She said she's positive and the other girl was in agreement. I told her I drove from Escondido and I would be very disappointed if I find out that wasn't true. She said she heard many of her clients confirm that activision won't do any beta for Xbox1. Since she made that comment. I took it as is and left. When I got home I contacted activision through Twitter and community form. I got an answer the next morning in which they wrote that it wasn't true. Now I'm livid and upset at the fact that I had to deal with this situation and left a bad impression of GameStop. The next morning I went back to gamestop and notice Don was there. I was going In to cancel my preorder and cancel my membership. I told Don what happened and he said that he never heard of such a thing and that all he needs to do is cancel my order and do it again. It was very easy, fast, and simple. However, I am just so angry about being lied to I am still thinking about the terrible service at this store. As for Don, he is a great guy but he needs to learn to empathize with clients especially when they've been misled and misinformed. I didn't mind but I know if Don was someone else and they didn't empathize with my situation and apologized for the lack of information I would have left. Gamestop Please teach your employees to not lie or misinform clients when you don't know the answer. Just state that you don't know and let your clients know that if they come back tomorrow there is a well experienced employee who could service their needs. Chelsea, don't believe everything people tell you. That's how rumors spread and that's how you lose credibility. You are a great person but if you don't do your own research people will never trust you nor believe anything you say. New employee - it's okay to not know everything but please ask others around you for help. Don't just stand there and smile. If your colleagues can't help than leave it to management. I don't love Gamestop, nor do I completely hate it. The place is fairly organized and easy to navigate. The employees are a hit or miss, thankfully the majority of the people I've talked to are really nice and knowledgable about the upcoming video games. There's only been one time I came into contact with a rude employee here, I try to avoid her when she's working. Every now and then you'll find a hidden gem. For example, my boyfriend and I found the scariest game I have ever played, Fatal Frame! And it was pretty cheap, too. I beyond surprised that they had it here, and they only made several copies when the game was first released. read more

I don't know him personally, I just felt compelled to mention him after looking at some of the reviews complaining about customer service. Our recent visit to this store has prompted me to post this review. Our son wanted some new games and they had a used game special going on. We had some concerns on the game content for our 13 year old and the staff was very helpful point out what to expect in each game. Some we thought might be ok we quickly put back based on there comments. One of the games my son picked out the guy found they had one of the used games was in a collectors edition box and gave that to him instead for the same price. He did not need to do that but he did. These guys have always been nice but this time they went out of their way a little more and during a busy time as well. Thanks guys. read more

I'm just so let down by this location. I wish I hadn't gone when I did. A situation occurred at this location where the clerk (Andrew, Brown Curly hair, bigger side) was working alone and was extremely rude and non-understanding to a younger then18 year old boy. The boy left and five minutes later his father comes with him and starts screaming/cursing at the clerk. The clerk cursed/threatened to fight him back and I was just there looking at games while all this was going on. The son pushed his enraged father out the store to deescalate tension and then came in after by himself this time. The clerk said this in response, "REALLY YOU BROUGHT YOUR DAD INSIDE, GET THE F*** OUT GET THE F*** OUT." This kid was probably 16... Two minutes later the clerk comes over to me and says, "Sorry about that, you didn't hear me curse or threaten him right?" At this point I'm just extremely uncomfortable by him putting me in this position to cover for him. I reluctantly said yes then tried to check out my games. When I'm checking out his manager comes in, and after awhile he says this to his manager. "We had a situation occur where I had to tell an angry dad to politely get out the store. This customer was super understanding and polite about the situation and saw me do the right thing, isn't that right?" I reluctantly just covered for him then got out the store. THIS WAS EXTREMELY UNCOMFTORABLE. I called GameStop support about this issue though I haven't gotten an email back with a form they promised I can fill out. Then I wanted to come in today, I called and asked a lady if Andrew was working today/Still employed at this location. She said "not at this moment" and couldn't provide me the employment details which I totally understand then I briefly described the situation and hung up. FIVE MINUTES LATER. GameStop rings me and it's Andrew's voice on the phone. I AM NOW FEARFUL FOR MY WELL-BEING NOW THAT HE HAS MY NUMBER. And with this review he'll unfortunately have my first and last name which I'm even more scared of. This individual has anger issues from what I witnessed and manipulated me into covering for his employment. Personally, I do not feel comfortable shopping at this location anymore. It's the closest near me, but I'd gladly drive farther to feel safe and away from Andrew. Super let down by Gamestop, if you have children or any small individuals I recommend shopping at a different location for safety and as well just proceeding with caution if you see a larger male with brown curly hair named Andrew working. read more
