Saddle up! and drive on Cascabel Road to visit one of Arizona's unique movie and western sets. Jay Gammons, the founder and your friendly tour guide, is very knowledgeable and loves to show guests around his historic "town" that he built himself. This place has been the site of numerous movies and is an active location for westerns even now....with 5 westerns on tap to come and film in the near future. If you love antiques you will absolutely adore The Gulch. And Jay can tell you the history of each and every piece. He's got several antique cars, old mining equipment and lots of movie memorabilia. And you can take all the time you want to take photographs and just relax in the beautiful high desert. There are no horses to ride here....no food or drinks for sale....just good old fashion visiting and hanging out on a real movie set. (There IS some root beer to drink if you get real thirsty.) Jay's father was John Wayne's security guard and even Jay himself has been featured in a few movies...including one with John Wayne. Part of his tour is telling you about these famous stars he has met and worked with. That's a real treat. Gammons Gulch is open September through May from 9 to 4. From June to August, you need to call and let him know you're coming. He might be in Benson at the Walmart. And it does get pretty hot here in the summer. That's why Jay suggests calling no matter what day you plan on coming. If you love movies and western towns, put Gammons Gulch on your "to visit" list. Oh, and while you're here, drop in and visit the donkey rescue sanctuary right next door. They need a phone call, too, but it is well worth the visit! read more

If you find yourself in Benson, near Benson, or in Arizona for that matter-YOU NEED TO VISIT THIS PLACE! Truly a one of a kind experience. There are no words to explain how amazing Jay is as a tour guide and western experience facilitator. From the second we drove up, we knew it was going to be a wonderful evening. Jay was on the porch just south of the gate waving us in with a smile. The tour took a little over an hour and we loved every second of it. The stories, jokes and witty banter from Jay were just what the doctor ordered! Popcorn the voluptuous orange tabby cat even tagged along on the tour with us. The buildings, antiques and classic cars were awesome to see. The history behind everything was explained very well with accompanying stories from Jay. Near the end of the tour, Jay serenaded us with his old time piano and banjo. For being self taught and only playing for 2 years, Jay is a wonderful musician! Jay's wife even made an intro as we made our departure. Such a wonderful couple! We will definitely be going back any chance we get! Thank you Jay! read more

MAKE RESERVATIONS! They are not that busy, but it is run by a retired couple and they need notice. This is not about the dozen ramshackle western-style buildings, the tiny "museum", or the hoards of antiques cramming every available space. If you took the easy 12 mile drive from Benson to get here just for that, you would have wasted your time. So you might think that the five stars I rated Gammon's Gulch was a slip of the wrist. But it wasn't - my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There are two reasons why. The first is your guide, Jay, who was previously in the movie industry, met everyone, and even acted in some westerns. He liked some people, didn't care for others, and doesn't mind telling you which is which (can you guess whom he liked -- Barbra Striesand or Sam Elliott?). Ask him. Jay is perfect and it is his running commentary for the 45 minute tour that makes it great fun. That and the four very well-fed cats. And the honky tonk piano and old-time banjo that Jay plays. The second reason is that my wife is a photography buff, and this is really heaven if you want to take pictures of the recreated old West. It is far better than the polished facades of Tombstone, or the crumbling remains of a ghost town. Gammon's Gulch is kept up just to the right extent to look real, and is full of interesting junk and valuable antiques, at least half of which make great photos. Entrance costs $8 and includes the tour, but you pay at the end, and if you don't think it is worth it, you don't have to pay. Shame on you if you don't - how do you suppose they pay their electric bill. read more

My husband and I visit 5 or more years ago at this time it was just opening if you show up not by reservation. We spent a couple of hours with Jay and loved hearing his history and his history with Old Tucson where a lot of what he has built his town around came from there. There is a lot of historical tales in his collection.He played his piano and sang for us ,while we drank sasparrilla.It was a real treat to visit. read more

Is it a museum for the Southwestern Movie Buff, a movie set or a little slice of history you get to enjoy in peace and quiet? It's all 3 and then some. My sister and I wanted to get together and take photos someplace interesting before her summer was over. Since my wife and I were going to visit a friend in nearby Benson, we met my sister and niece in Tucson and drove down. After a nice lunch we headed out to Gammons for a tour and some photo fun. Jay the owner greeted us at the gate with a happy smile. We parked and were immediately drawn into the past with wonderful old west buildings all around us. It's not a huge movie set but you don't really need one to see the past here. Jay walked us to each building and opened them for a unique experience. We snapped away for our own enjoyment. You can't take photos if you intend to sell them. We don't, but I may use a couple for stippling drawings later. There are old cars, a black smith shop, Sheriffs Jail, Mercantile and Saloon plus more. The experience is wonderful. You get to see some many things that you only see in photos these days. Gammon's if worth the 12 mile drive from Benson if you want a better experience than fake western towns. This one is real. Not store fronts but the entire buildings. The black smith shop is a workable shop with so my items it boggles the mind. I'd call it heaven if I could play in there. Warning: Drive the 35 mile speed limit going through the little town right before it. I guess allot of movie crews have gotten plenty of tickets their first day driving to it. read more

You can tell he loves to show his stuff and tell his stories and jokes ..He is very passionate about his belongings. WAY over priced for the experience they provide. It's their price per PERSON. Save your money if you have a family or young ones. The gas to get there already hikes up the price. They are not willing to support local groups in the area. No food available. No regular hours. Hard to get to or find. Save your time, money and energy and go to a real attraction. read more
