I've been to Gandolfi Fish which resides next door, but this was my first time to check out the to go portion of the restaurant. Word was that they sell a fish finger sandwich, and sure enough, they do- £5! Aside from the fish finger sandwich, they sell fish suppers, soups, sides, and so much more. Quite a nice offering for a to go place! Gandolfi Fish To Go shares a kitchen with Gandolfi Fish, so you know that all the ingredients are fresh and delicious. Sophie K and I both ordered the fish finger sandwich and weren't really sure what we were going to get for the money. We were asked if we wanted battered or breaded fish and we both decided upon breaded. I'm much more a fan of breaded fish (hello, fish fingers!) so I was super happy that there was actually an option. I've had fish finger sandwiches from other restaurants that were battered and the fish was greasy and gross. This fish was perfectly cooked and no grease in sight. The fish was lovingly placed in a baguette with some lettuce and tartar sauce and was the most perfect sandwich I've ever eaten. If you're into fish and more so fish finger sandwiches, please do yourself a favour and stop in here for this delicious treat! £5 for 5 fish fingers in a fresh baguette, what more could you hope for? read more

Boy oh boy, do I love a fish finger sandwich. Not to toot my own horn, but I make a pretty mean fish finger sandwich. I've always been on the look out for them in restaurants, and then Carolyn E. mentioned this place. I was very excited to try it. Eventually we managed to squeeze it in. The entrance is right next to the entrance to the restaurant and I almost missed it. All it is, is a small room with a counter that looks into Gandolfi's kitchen, a small fridge thing to keep drinks cold and a small bench. That's it, oh there's a menu. I swallowed pretty hard when I saw £5 for a fish finger sandwich, but I wasn't going to let that get to me. So we ordered and the staff was really friendly and asked whether we wanted out fish breaded or battered. We went for breaded (great choice, but I will try the battered), and both had tartar sauce and lettuce. We didn't have to wait for very long until we were given a HUGE package in brown paper. What a revelation. Although semi difficult to eat because you get 5 (!!!) big bits of fish in a huge crunchy baguette bread, it was delicious. The tartare sauce was perfection, the lettuce was crisp and the fish was undeniably delicious. I could have only had the fish and would have been happy. It wasn't fishy, but perfectly cut and perfectly breaded, golden on the outside with just the right amount of crunch and taste. Wonderful. Next time I am going to spread the sauce slight better and place the fish differently but I loved it. I loved every bite and I was gutted when it was over. The portion is huge, the price is fair. Even though you get a lot of food, you know it's quality. And I mean, excellent quality. It's also big enough to fill you up but not too much or too greasy (no grease here!!) to make you regret your life decisions. Boom. First to review! I'd heard about this place a while back, bookmarked the hell out of it and stuck in into the old brain under the 'this sounds awesome' file. Today was the day it came to the top of the list and I just happened to be in the area. Oh well, fish & chips for dinner then! First up, this plaice (ahem) just looks awesome but in a very reserved manner. It's all white tiles, chalk board menu and open views into the kitchen. Nae leaning up against the back of the the fryers trying to guess how long that sausage has been sitting there. Ok, so that leads me to the first thing to point out about this place. It's fresh. Nothing seems to be pre made, meaning that a supper takes a real 5-7 mins to arrive in yer mits. Price wise, it's what you'd expect for freshly made grub, with suppers ranging from 6 (Stornaway black pudding supper) to 10 quids. Pricey aye, but the quality? Ooft, the quality. I knew this place, from the reviews of G - Fish and G Cafe, would only be serving the best o gear. I was not disappointed. A cod and haddock supper, both coming in at around 7 of your earth pounds a pop, were just sublime, and certainly vying for the best I've had in Glasgow. Succulent, beer battered and served with proper chippy chips, this was a fish supper served with a silver spoon rather than a wee wooden fork! In summary. This is an awesome addition to the MC. Aye it's pricey, but hey, you'd easily pay that for a cardboard pizza offering from Hizza Putt, or some other generic takeaway joint. Plus, if you really think about it, what does a fish supper retail at? 5 notes? Something like that? Well, add another couple of quid to that and you have restaurant quality fish fired at you with chippy chips to boot. Win for the fish! read more

I love Cafe Gandolfi at any time of day, so it's a heinous omission on my part that we hadn't previously tried Gandolfi Fish. Luckily my sister is a fairly regular patron and took us along to rectify that situation. It was mid-afternoon on a Friday so they weren't exactly busy, which was to our advantage as we got very friendly and attentive service. Both of us opted for the smoked salmon starter, which was absolutely perfect, almost melting on the fork. I wasn't expecting that the bread that had arrived beforehand was meant for the salmon and had already eaten a slice of it before the salmon arrived; but fortunately there was enough bread left. The choice of mains was a bit of a no-brainer and without much deliberation we opted for the pan-fried sea bass - always a favourite. Again, the fish was just perfectly done, accompanied by some crispy potato slices and greens. Plain and simple, allowing the fish flavour to take precedence. The pre-theatre menu is fairly select but not too outrageously priced; if your taste is more adventurous the a la carte and daily specials menus offer a wider (and pricier) choice. It's possibly a bit expensive for what it is, but this is a prime Merchant City location and the quality of the food makes it worthwhile for a special occasion. read more

Delicious and sophisticated Glasgow dining. Encapsulating all that is wonderful about the Merchant City- Scottish style, elegant and clean design with a friendly and professional vibe. You could visit here for business or with friends and both would be grand. The service was pitch perfect- friendly and attentive and a really consistent tone from all staff, like all the best places have. The decor inside is lovely, really in keeping with the Scottish sea theme, atmospheric mood lighting and great details like high quality cutlery and glasses make for a high end feel to the dining experience. The pre-theatre is £15.95 for 2 courses or £17.95 for 3 and has a great selection of signature dishes. The portions are very generous, especially for a pre-theatre, so you need a big appetite to do it justice! The soup of the day- spiced lentil- was gorgeous and a truly epic bowl which left me pretty much full after just a starter. The fish pie was absolutely outstanding - as a frequenter of fish pies I would say this is up there with the best I've had. The food is really great quality, quite high in salt and butter and the naughty things so probably not the best option for the more healthy eater unless it's a special treat. On a busy Saturday night, my dad was hunting for somewhere to go for dinner. He doesn't generally like booking a place when he's indecisive about where to eat so we turned up to Merchant City and wandered around. He went into Gandolfi Fish on the off chance they had a table soon. Luckily for us, they did BUT they needed it back within an hour and 15 mins. Eeeeek. We decided to stay and ordered starters, I got scallops with black pudding. VERY good. The scallops were cooked to my liking (I'm fussy with scallops after my scallop incident of 2010 where I got vile food poisoning at another Merchant City restaurant). The black pudding and it's crispiness complemented my scallops. For main course, I ordered langoustines that were served with fries. Once again, I couldn't fault how they were cooked. Thankfully they weren't overcooked rubber! They are a little tricky to eat but that's all part of the fun. Before I knew it, the people that were to dine at our table turned up 15 mins early and the staff were trying to now rush us out and said, sorry no dessert. We couldn't switch to another table either so instead we went to Tinderbox around the corner for coffee and cake. I would have loved to have spent more time in the restaurant, but it was our own fault for just walking in off the street instead of booking. Morale of the story? BOOK A TABLE. read more

Loved this place ! We were going to just go to the take away fish and chips side of the restaurant but decided to sit down instead. Such a great choice. We had a pre theatre two course meal for 15.95 and it was worth it. I started with the black pudding and venison and then finished it with the fish and chips we came for ( some of the best in Glasgow). My friends also had fish and chips but one had the soup of the day to start, carrot and ginger soup, and the other had the smoked salmon. My first time here it was a battered Haddock supper and it was a happy choice. Flaky fish in the inside with a crunchy fried batter made this fishy dinner a winner. But being a Wednesday evening, things were quite dead and the disgruntled owner let us know it. The second time around was a busy Saturday night with friendly service. The Sea Bream had the same good batter as the previous, but even better because it stuck. It wasn't the supper, just the fish but the two pieces were big enough to require a mini food break in between. Fish was fresh as can be and delicious. It comes with a homemade tartar sauce with some herbs which is..different. Its worthy of a mention but personally a fan of the original tartar with just a spritz of lemon. Coleslaw was good when you actually got pieces of coleslaw but the problem for me was that it was more mayo than cabbage. I'd prefer a side that was less glop and more zestfully crunchy. Recently, I once again had the battered Haddock. I think I meant to get the Sea Bream bc atm I couldn't recall which I liked better. It was good, but Sea Bream was definitely the better for me! To account for its goodness, I can easily get past the less than stellar side and sauce. If i want fish & chips, its my first and close to only. read more

I've swithered over how to rate Gandolfi Fish, because *most* of the food was fine, good even. But there were some major problems that really let it down. My seafood loving sister was celebrating her birthday, so off to Gandolfi Fish we went. Things started badly when I was given a cream sherry rather than dry like I'd ordered, but I didn't bother to flag this up and drank it anyway... Our starters were good - I had the salt and chilli squid which was very tasty, which a good amount of kick in it (although perhaps a little batter light). The other starters all looked good and we ate them happily. It was when the mains came in that things really went downhill. The baked cod I believe was good, the steak was delicious, the fish pie was so so - the liquour was watery and it really could have done with a few minutes under the grill to crisp up the top and give it some colour. And that's not mentioning the fact that it was verging on undercooked - chewy prawn? No thanks. And talking of undercooked. The birthday girl ordered a half lobster. She couldn't cut it. Eventually, after trying most of the knives on the table she managed to saw a bit off and put it in her mouth, and spat it back out again. Dad tried it too, it came right back out of his mouth too. The verdict? Raw. Raw lobster?! This should never have been served. It was sent back and to the waiter's credit he apologised profusely, and while we were waiting for a replacement (and us all eating our mains with my sister sat hungry) he brought her a small plate of langoustines - these, I'm pleased to report, were good. But the second serving of lobster... well you'd hope that one would be fine. It was at least cooked. It was, however, off. Lobster shouldn't be able to twist round your fork like spaghetti. Nor should it taste disgusting. So this too was sent back. The waiter then informed us that the chef, having had a look at the rest of their stock, had decided just to take lobster off the menu full stop. Another waiter, bizarrely, told us that the chef hadn't actually been happy with the second serving but sent it out anyway?! Why would a. any self-respecting chef send out something they weren't happy with, and b. the waiter tell us this?! Seafood isn't something you can send out undercooked, it could really make you ill. This time, rather than more langoustines, sister got a glass of champagne and decided she was going to give up on a main course. By the way, the deserts were pretty good. I had the dark chocolate torte with chantilly cream and 'dark chocolate sauce' (three tiny dots). The torte was very nice, the casing particularly so. I'm not sure what it was as the menu didn't say, but I'd hazard a guess at pistachio. It was £7 though, for a tiny sliver. The food on the whole was good, the service was fine and they mostly coped well with our complaints. But the lobster incident really let them down - especially as it happened twice. Which for any restaurant, especially a fish one, just shouldn't happen. read more

I was here on Saturday for the wedding dinner of two close friends. First of all, I like the name. It makes me think of Lord Of The Rings (yes, I know that's Gandalf). However the name also tentatively suggests that this might just be a fish restaurant, which is not generally in agreement with my food tastes. However, as this was a wedding reception, the bride and groom had chosen a varied menu across the hors d'oeuvres, starter and main course. I can confidently tell you that the restaurant can hold 57 people, as we had the whole restaurant to ourselves and that was the size of the party! Several small tables and a couple of booths but everyone had a view of the bridal table. Hors d'oeurvres included haggis balls and tapenade bruschetta (both delicious) and the champagne was fairly free flowing! When it came to the wine on the table, we had white and red but the staff were perfectly happy to swap white out for rose on request. With the temperature such as it was on Saturday, it was fairly warm inside (unless you had been seated underneath an air conditioning vent!) - top marks to the kitchen staff who must have been sweltering! I had tomato and basil soup for starter, very nice, and followed this up with a steak, which I really enjoyed. I dessert was a chocolate torte, also delicious. We just had the best lunch we have ever had in the UK. The fish was so fresh and cooked to perfection. They had a great 3 course lunch that we both throughly enjoyed. The freshness and quality of food was exquisite, exceeded only by the service, especially that of Josephine who made our visit to Glasgow complete and wonderful. read more

Do I expect too much from this place? For the prices being asked, I don't think so. 2nd attempt here saw a slight improvement, but overall, it's just not delivering the wow factor. Take the salt and chili squid for example, not particularly salty, certainly not enough chili and the squid had turned to rubber, classic mistake. I wouldn't say I'm a fussy eater and I know it's not possible to please all of the people all of the time, but at £7.50 for 3 langoustines and chips I'd want the langous to be minus the rest of the body. Now, like I say, that might look pretty to some, but to me it looks vile and also a cheap trick to make the food look big. The staff working here are pleasant, chef asked how I wanted the scampi cooked, of course I had no idea, so he recommended split tail grilled to get the best flavour. Okay, have an extra star for that you friendly chef you. At least the chips were good, in fact, very good. As with my last review, this won't put me off the other Gandolfis, I may even try a sit in Gandolfi Fish meal some day, but I'm afraid it'll be a long time before I can justify here again. Unfortunately my experience at Gandolfi Fish was less than I'd expected. Maybe I expected too much? A few days before our day oot in Glasgow, I looked up the menu for Gandolfi Fish (having heard such great stuff about Cafe Gandolfi) and had what I wanted all picked out. I was pretty excited to get some oysters, scallops with black pudding, and was torn between the amazing sounding mains of baked fillet of cod with pea risotto, and fritto misto. The day of, I specifically arrived hungry so I would be able to eat the oyster + two courses I had my eye on. I love seafood, and I was excited. The service was attentive and friendly, but professional as well. The service was really the highlight of the evening, especially considering the fact that the FIL is more demanding than his tipping warrants... But the food... oh hum. The food was fine. The food was at times nice, but was mostly fine. But, for roughly £30 per person for three courses (and I would have been too hungry after just two courses), I wasn't impressed. Here's what was weird, though - The starters and desserts were well presented and were arguably worth their price tag. But the mains? The mains were well it really fell flat - they were poorly presented and were smaller than I would have expected. They were in fact small enough that I ordered a dessert as I wasn't in the least bit full. My fritto misto (which was about a dozen mouthfulls of food) was accompanied by "roast garnic aioli" which had not only been sitting in the little pot long enough to have a thick skin on it, it was bright yellow (no idea) and did not have (in my opinion) nearly enough garlic flavour. My MIL ordered the baked cod with risotto and was served a pitifully small piece of cod in a large bowl of risotto. For dessert, the panna cotta was gorgeous but I unfortunately ordered the chocolate tart which was hard chocolate in a too-thick, hard shell, served with a too-tart berry compote. Meh. Even The Man commented to me later that he felt Gandolfi Fish was really just a hyped up chippy and not worth the steep price tag. The Man likes all food, so when he makes that kind of comment, it's definitely worth noting. All in all I felt let down, and within hours I was starving. I definitely wouldn't be returning to give Gandolfi Fish another go. read more

Linda and I dropped by here after a long absence. It was like returning to an old friend's house. Welcoming staff and wonderful surroundings. As always, the food was amazing. I want to know how they make the soups here taste so good. It really could be the whole meal. I am going to be quite harsh here, not simply because of the experience but because of the complete lack of contact we had after the event, having taken to Twitter with photographic evidence of our problem and subsequently been ignored then really on their heads be it. We have had two experiences with Gandolfi's Fish to Go place and the first was pleasant enough as our friends took us there and you never complain when someone else is paying! As the other half was minding their place and looking after their mad but loveable cat we decided to pay a repeat visit. We headed up and both of us ordered the Pollock. The joy of buying a sustainable and different fish from an up-market chippie offset the idea of paying £7.50 odd for a Fish Supper. Pollock is a great tasting fish and the efforts of Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall et al to bring new kinds of fish to our minds and plates is a very good thing. As the Fish Suppers were being constructed I took a glance over at the thing being wrapped and dismissed what I had seen as a trick of the light. However when we got home we discovered the awful truth. The Fish Suppers were adorned with what I can only describe as the smallest piece of Fish I have ever seen on a Fish Supper! The Fish itself was no bigger than the average cheap burger, I kid you not! This was on one of them, and high hopes of being able to split another portion and make a suitable pair of portions were dashed when we looked at the second of them. If anything it was smaller! Between the pair of us we barely had what I would have described as an adult portion of Fish. It looked as though a twin fillet had been cut in half and those halves cut in half again. For the price we paid, it was a complete joke. The Chips were nothing to write home about, being simply chips. As I said earlier, we both then took our spleen to Twitter and posted pics of the offending Suppers and asked for some form of response. Both of us were ignored. The fish was very tasty though, but two mouthfuls in and it was gone. Wouldn't go back, there are less pretentious places serving better chips and offering decent portions for a couple of quid less. read more

I have had a few takeaways from here and I can honestly say that it has been great every time. The chips are cooked well and the batter is light, crispy and not at all greasy. The veggie haggis supper is a nice twist on the usual chip shop choices. The portions are pretty generous and at £6.50 for a fish supper although not cheap I do think it is good value for money. read more

I've been a fan of Cafe Gandolfi for many years, and upon returning to the city on business i was excited to eat once again at this Glasgow institution. I hadn't appreciated that it had been revamped with a new found focus on fish, but it still lived up to expectation. The service was great, and I had a little of fun with the barman as I tasted various wines in search of a perfect sauvignon blanc. The menu is extensive and includes Scottish twists, e.g., black pudding with scallops. I opted for the mussels as a starter, which I enjoyed although I would have preferred a small piece of toasted bread rather than the baguette to accompany it. Following that I had their special which was a halibut and crab crushed potato. Overall, a great meal with great service. Would definitely recommend it. read more

reading previous comments I think they've up'd their game. working close by in a freezing office I thought I'd treat myself for my lunch (late afternoon) and popped over for a wee fish supper which was only £4. Everything was cooked fresh by the same chefs in the same kitchen as the restaurant next door - Gandolfi Fish. The chips were perfect & I loved that they sprinkled sea salt over them. the fish was a good size, not too much batter and melted in the mouth. they even added a slice of lemon for me to squeeze over it. Yes I could have gone for the lobster thermidor (?) to go or something else more exotic but the wee fish supper did me just fine for a treat. read more

I really like all the Gandolfi units. I especially like there fish restaurant, the fish is always as local as possible and always extremely fresh. The food is really good value for money. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars, is the waiting staff can sometimes be a little off, I don't need to know if you got a hangover. I would suggest booking a table as it get sometimes be hard to get one if you just walk in. read more

Food is beautiful. Nice fresh produce and very reasonable.

It's not cheap, and prices certainly add up once you add on a bottle of wine and some side dishes (accompaniments do not come with your main, you have to select and pay for side dishes individually), but it is quality, pure and simple. Fish is served up simply and delicately, and tastes as fresh as if it had just been plucked out of the water that very afternoon. Which is entirely possible. A couple of items were off the menu, which only goes to reinforce the fact that only the freshest ingredients are used, and in each case, a replacement was provided, as delicious sounding as the original. Staff were friendly and professional, topping up wine and offering assistance without being intrusive. Atmosphere was classy, but accessible. read more

Recently opened sister restaurant to the long established Gandolfi's. Serving a small but well thought menu of fish dishes which arent cheap but for the quality of the food served are great value. The surroundings are very comfortable and the staff very efficient but not overly formal. read more

Went on a Saturday lunchtime, had just ordered and there was a powercut. We were brought a cold fish platter 'to keep us going' and were updated with the power situation regularly. We were told the power wouldn't be on for a couple of hours so it was up to us if we wanted to leave, or come back later. We opted to come back later and left our mobile number. We were not allowed to pay for anything and there was no guarantee that we would come back, depending on the power coming back on. After about 30 mins we got a call, the power was back on, we went back and had the most delicious meal, the high point of which was the Lemon dessert with Limocello sorbet. Service was excellent, thanks Matthew, and we still weren't allowed to pay for what we had earlier. We will definitely be back as what started off as a potential disaster was a wonderful lunch, fabulous food, can't praise it enough read more
